New pope is a fan of this team (and was even on TV for a game)

Who says Cardinals have no other field of interest than religion?

It’s now common knowledge that Pope Francis has his replacement as head of the Catholic Church and head of the Vatican’s monarchical state, namely Robert Francis Prevost, aka Leo XIV. The latter was recently elected as the 267th Pope by the Conclave.

Leo XIV is known for a peculiarity that has been the talk of the town: he is an American. More precisely, he was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 14, 1955 (age 69).

With this in mind, another interesting fact was revealed about one of Leon XIV’s areas of interest: he is a fan of the Chicago White Sox. This city is renowned for its sportsmanship, and clearly, the new Pope has immersed himself in the dynamics of his hometown. That said, he has made it clear that he is in no way a fan of the Cubs, Chicago’s other baseball club, as rumors had it.

Incidentally, a clip involving the Pope has been circulating on the Web since his enthronement, showing him at Game 1 of the 2005 World Series, involving “his” White Sox against the Houston Aeros.

Chicago won the World Series in four games that year.

Decidedly, some people will see the new pope as a little more “normal” than one might think.

He is a human being, after all!

Troubling story for Matvei Michkov in Dubai

The longer this goes on, the more we begin to realize just how polarizing a hockey player Matvei Michkov really is.

A member of the Philadelphia Flyers since 2023, the Russian never ceases to be the talk of the town, be it for his talent on the ice or for the negative rumors we used to hear about him. In fact, the Canadiens preferred David Reinbacher to him in the 2023 draft.

In short, even though he possesses sharp skills, it’s clear that he scared a lot of people off back then.

The youngster has been the talk of the town since Tuesday, when he was involved in a road accident while on vacation in Dubai.

According to information circulated by journalist Alexey Shevchenko, the car was rented in his name, but he was not behind the wheel at the time of the accident.

The Flyers organization is aware of what happened in Dubai.

The same journalist also mentioned the possibility of the involvement of alcohol and prostitutes in the story, as well as an administrative problem on Michkov’s side, when he apparently left the country without certain important documents…

It’s worth noting that his lawyer preached that his client was a “victim”. Who’s right?

In short, it seems inevitable that this story will tarnish the name of the European forward.

Ivan Demidov and his girlfriend took a trip to this popular destination

The 2024-2025 season wasn’t all plain sailing for the Montreal Canadiens’ new crown jewel, Ivan Demidov.

The youngster spent most of the year at home in Russia, working off the last of his contract with the KHL’s SKA St. Petersburg. He then played in the playoffs with his team, having been eliminated early in the first round.

The fifth overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft flew to Montreal after the playoffs on the other continent, crossing the globe to make the jump to North America last April. And that’s not forgetting Demidov’s baptism on the Bettman circuit, both in the regular season and in the playoffs. So, let’s face it, he’s had quite an eventful few weeks.

Many thought he’d be heading home to Russia to rest up, but he doesn’t seem to have any plans to return for the time being.

With this in mind, he has decided to take a break in the warm southern sun, under the terms of the 2024-2025 calendar, by treating himself to a little trip with his girlfriend Katya.

In fact, the dashing lovebirds recently shared a photo on social networks, to share their current travel dynamic, as they flew to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

A great way to celebrate his brand-new contract (and life) with the Habs.

People are betting online on the next pope

Last April, the Vatican lost its leader, as Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88, following medical complications.

Following this terrible news for the Catholic Church, a new pope is to be named and Conclave have already begun.

133 cardinals are now isolated from the outside world, in the Sistine Chapel, until a new Pope is elected by the Conclave. It’s worth noting that the future Pope must obtain two-thirds of the votes to secure the post, so the struggle is sure to be interesting to follow.

While we await the results of this vote, a number of betting sites have joined in the suspense, as predictions have just been made as to the outcome of the election and yes… people are betting on the next pope.

According to estimates, Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Italy) is the favorite to become the new Pope with 27%, followed by Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines) in second place with 22.3%. Matteo Zuppi (Italy) completes the top-3 with 10.9%. It’s clear, then, that there are only two serious candidates, according to the results of these predictions.

Although the whole thing is unpredictable, it’s worth pointing out that the betting sites in question correctly predicted the outcome of the American election last November, namely a Donald Trump victory over Kamala Harris.

That said, in 2013, when Francis was named Pope, he was not the favorite in the running for the post, while Cardinal Angelo Scola was once tipped to have the throne.

Conor McGregor, has once again found a way to get people talking about him in public, with a recent visit to the White House.

Invited to meet American President Donald Trump as part of Saint Patrick’s Day, McGregor, an Irishman, was brought to answer several questions from the media on site. The left-hander showed no restraint during the question-and-answer session, addressing a sensitive topic in Ireland, namely illegal immigration.

Clearly a supporter of the Republican leader, the former mixed martial arts champion has had his share of run-ins with the law in recent years, and he doesn’t have the best reputation around the world. On top of that, he’s also made some statements to fight against immigration…

Former Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, did not rally behind his fellow countryman, however. In fact, he personally attacked him in public, mentioning that good Irish fathers teach their children to avoid individuals like Conor McGregor.

Let’s recall that McGregor had revealed his interest in running for the presidency in Ireland in 2023…

He had received support from a certain Elon Musk.

Canada is angry at Wayne Gretzky

When the question arises as to whom is the greatest hockey player of all time, the name Wayne Gretzky comes up very often.

However, many believe that Mario Lemieux should inherit this title, saying that if he hadn’t been injured, he would have been superior to number 99 in terms of points produced. Certainly, we will never know.

Nonetheless, Gretzky was considered a monument in Canada, to this day, but it seems that his popularity is in a constant free fall in his homeland.

On several occasions, we have seen Wayne Gretzky bring his support to the polarizing and controversial President of the United States, Donald Trump, as they have a good relationship, according to all appearances, as Le Journal de Montréal also pointed out.

The former superstar of the Oilers and Kings was also seen wearing a helmet that said “Make America Great Again” when Trump won his elections last November. Additionally, he has been spotted several times staying at Trump’s private residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

We know that Trump often attacks Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lately, and Wayne Gretzky’s silence in this regard particularly disturbs Canadian citizens. Some even speak of a betrayal towards his own people, nothing less.

“The Great One” also created discomfort at the Four Nations Confrontation earlier in February by not wearing the Canadian jersey, despite his honorary captain title for his nation, settling for a suit and tie.

This is not to mention the thumbs-up gesture directed at the USA bench before leaving the ice, at the end of the pre-game ceremony of the final.

Considering all these events that have accumulated over time, Canada seems angry with its beloved child.

A petition is even circulating to strip him of his title as a member of the Order of Canada, which has been active since 1984 (Officer)!

Moreover, it is noteworthy that a petition with over 8,000 signatures is circulating in Edmonton to rename Wayne Gretzky Drive to another name…

Let’s just say the 64-year-old legend hasn’t made any friends recently, and it will only get worse, especially with the recent developments…

LaVar Ball had to have his leg amputated

The controversial figure of the media and the NBA basketball world, LaVar Ball, is currently facing serious health issues.

According to several sources, including TMZ, the father of Lonzo (Chicago Bulls), LaMelo (Charlotte Hornets), and LiAngelo Ball has had his right foot amputated due to medical complications earlier this week. The medical problem that led to this amputation has not been disclosed.

A photo of LaVar Ball is currently circulating online, showing him sitting in a wheelchair and evidence that his foot was removed. Notably, he appears to be in good spirits given the circumstances, sporting a smile on his face.

At 57 years old, LaVar Ball has never played in the NBA, unlike his sons, having instead found success at the school level and as a coach. He is not unknown in professional circles, having made a name for himself a few years back with his viral statements, particularly regarding his offspring and… Michael Jordan.

When KFC leaves… Kentucky!

The famous Kentucky Fried Chicken has just undergone a huge geographical change!

Indeed, as announced by the brand’s owner, “Yum! Brands,” KFC will officially leave the state of Kentucky to move to Plano, Texas! Pizza Hut will do the same. And for the other chains under “Yum! Brands,” such as Taco Bell and Habit Burger & Grill, no changes will be made, as they will remain based in Irvine, California.

We are talking about at least 100 KFC employees who will have to pack their bags to relocate to Texas, while another 90 additional employees will face the same fate within a year and a half.

The CEO of “Yum! Brands,” David Gibbs, explained this important decision through a press release, considering the impact it will have on the daily lives of their representatives.

Although the news is not at all popular in Louisville, the city where KFC was born, the leaders of “Yum! Brands” have decided to keep the KFC Foundation and their administrative offices in Kentucky, to retain part of its roots. The organization also stated that it intends to make a $1 million (US) donation to the University of Louisville’s business school, reports USA Today.

One can read between the lines that “Yum! Brands” somewhat wanted to buy peace by making this donation, but it is clear that KFC’s departure to Texas will create a void in the state of Kentucky, considering everything that this restaurant brand means in this region.

After all, the temple of Colonel Sanders has become one of the most recognized fast-food chains worldwide, so it is understandable that a mourning will be necessary for those affected.

7 suspects arrested in the case of the serial burglaries targeting several professional athletes

Last October, on the 5th and 7th of that month, the two stars of the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, were victims of a burglary at their respective homes.

In fact, a series of thefts occurred in this area of Kansas, and the beloved NFL duo was not spared. Moreover, no fewer than seven individuals have just been criminally charged regarding all this theft. We’re talking about seven Chileans, who face up to 10 years in federal prison. They are identified by the names of Jordan Quiroga Sanchez, Bastian Orellano Morales, Sergio Ortega Cabello, Pablo Zuniga Cartes, Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, Alexander Huiaguil Chavez, and Bastian Jimenez Freraut.

A conspiracy complaint to transport the said goods, coming from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, was filed on January 30, 2025, but it was announced just last Tuesday, February 18. It is reported that the total value of the stolen goods is even around 2 million dollars (US). It is still unclear whether the accused have managed to obtain legal counsel, but further details will certainly be disclosed soon.

It should be noted that Cabello, Chavez, Morales, and Sanchez have all pleaded not guilty to the initial charges against them in the state of Ohio, NBC News also reports.

This group is also linked to a theft valued at 1.5 million dollars (US) that occurred on November 2, 2024, in Wisconsin, involving a player from the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA. Additionally, burglaries in Cincinnati (Joe Burrow), Memphis (NBA player), and Tampa Bay (Buccaneers player) could potentially be connected to them, as these homes were also stripped while the owners were away, suffering thousands of dollars (US) in theft costs.

A snowboarder makes history (despite a fracture)

On January 24th, during the X Games in Aspen, Colorado, a highly recognized extreme sports competition, the young Japanese snowboarder, Hiroto Ogiwara, made history.

In fact, the 20-year-old athlete achieved the very first recorded 2340 in the history of an official competition!

A 2340 is a trick that consists of performing six and a half rotations in the air. As soon as he took off from the jump, Ogiwara immediately began his spin, giving himself the necessary time to complete the entire maneuver before finishing his run by landing in front of the spectators while celebrating his feat. This is a milestone, so we can understand his excitement.

The judges gave him a score of 97.33, securing the gold medal with nearly 3 points ahead of Taiga Hasegawa in second place. Notably, Rocco Jamieson completed the podium trio.

This achievement was made despite the fact that Ogiwara had sustained a minor fracture in his arm during a prior training session. He had received the green light to participate in the tournament, but one might still think he wasn’t at 100%, nonetheless. This information makes this accomplishment even more impressive, and hats off to the young man for his remarkable resilience!

The young athlete continues to make waves in his field, having been on a steady rise since his official debut in 2017, starting competitions of this kind at the age of 12.

He is particularly known for his triumphs at the Japanese junior ski championships, in addition to having won major honors at the senior level afterward (2021 and 2022).
