Benefits of working from home depends on family demands

Does working from home help reduce work exhaustion caused by juggling work and family commitments? The answer may depend on the level of conflict you have between work and home and your ability to recharge your batteries adequately, according to Professor Timothy Golden, from New York’s Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

In a study of 316 adults working for a large computer company, participants were asked about the levels of work-to-family conflict they experienced, including whether work kept them from family activities more than they would have liked, and whether they were too stressed to do the things they enjoy at home due to pressures at work.

Golden also looked at levels of family-to-work conflict e.g. time spent on family responsibilities interfering with work responsibilities, and difficulties concentrating on work because of stress from family responsibilities. Levels of work exhaustion and the extent and timing of telework were also assessed.

The study concluded that the more work and family demands conflicted, the more people suffered from exhaustion. Those with already high levels of work-family conflicts suffered higher exhaustion when they spent extensive time working from home, irrespective of whether they worked during traditional or non-traditional work hours.

However those who had lower levels of work-family conflicts suffered less exhaustion, which was further reduced by teleworking during either traditional or non-traditional work hours.

Saint Lucia a honeymoon paradise

The tropical island nation of Saint Lucia has been named the Caribbean’s leading honeymoon destination during the Caribbean & The Americas Gala Ceremony of the 2011 World Travel Awards.

The Caribbean nation is no stranger to the award either: Saint Lucia received the same honor for 2002-2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The island has no residency requirement for marriage, which means visitors can choose to get married during their trip within 24 hours of arrival, provided they obtain a Special Marriage License. Several of the nation’s hotels have staff specifically dedicated to helping guests orchestrate their special day – and can even provide members of the wedding party if necessary.

Some of the most popular wedding backdrops include the Piton Mountains or one of the island’s several botanical gardens. A variety of wedding and honeymoon packages are available, which can include everything from welcome fruit baskets to sunset cruises.

How pancreatic cancer affected Steve Jobs

Although there has yet to be an official announcement as to the cause of his death, it is public knowledge that Apple founder Steve Jobs had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2004, reports Time.

While new advancements are being made in treatments every day, currently patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer do not have a very good prognosis. Because it is one of the fastest-spreading forms of cancer, only about four percent of patients are expected to survive beyond five years; Jobs survived much longer than many cancer experts would have expected him to.

In 2004, he had surgery to remove the tumor from his pancreas, but the cancer spread. In 2009, he underwent a liver transplant in an effort to maintain as much organ function as possible.

Surgery is a standard treatment for the form of cancer, as is chemotherapy, radiation and now even new targeted anticancer drugs, such an erlotinib, which targets the growth factor of cancer cells. Jobs is known to have also undergone some alternative treatments, including a special diet and a hormone treatment that was only available in Switzerland.

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," Jobs’ successor Tim Cook wrote in an employee-wide email.

"No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much."

Young children’s food choices easily swayed by ads and parents

The relationship between fast food ads, parental influence, and food choices made by children is explored in a new study about to be published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

Researchers studied 75 children ranging in age from 3 to 5 years. The children were divided into two groups, and each group watched a series of two cartoons, with commercials shown between each cartoon. Half the children saw a commercial for French fries, and the other half saw a commercial for apple slices with dipping sauce.

Afterwards, the kids could choose a coupon for either advertised food with input from their parents – half of whom encouraged their child to choose the healthy option, while the other half remained neutral.

For the French fries commercial, 71 percent of kids chose the coupon for French fries if their parents remained neutral. However, the number dropped to 55 percent when parents encouraged their kids to select the healthier option.

Of the children who viewed the apple slices commercial, only 46 percent picked French fries when their parents remained neutral, and the number dropped to 33 percent with parental encouragement.

"Children were clearly influenced by the commercials they saw; however, parents are not powerless," said lead author Dr. Christopher Ferguson. He noted that although advertising effects can be considerable, "Parents have an advantage if they are consistent with their long-term messages about healthy eating."

Rather than focusing on banning advertisements to children, the authors suggest that politicians, advocates, and food producers should concentrate on ways to promote the advertisement of healthy food options.

New biopic about Princess Diana

British producer Stephen Evans, the man behind such films The Madness of King George and The Wings of the Dove, is preparing a big-budget biopic about Princess Diana, reports the Guardian.

Since her tragic death in 1997, numerous biographical films about ‘the people’s princess’ have been made, however this will be the first big-budget project (more than $ 50 million).

To help ensure authenticity, the producer has hired Ken Wharfe, the former head of Diana’s security, and her personal secretary, Patrick Jephson. Evans has hired crime novelist Philip Kerr to write the screenplay, however the lead actress and director have not yet been chosen.

Evans is confident the movie will be a hit. “What is quite clear is that her life was an amazing life. She was a wagonload of monkeys [mischievous] but she was also an amazing, fascinating, ballsy woman. You don’t often get a movie like this where you know, that if you can make it work, it is bomb proof."

In development for two years, the project will reportedly focus on the difficult period of her life during her marriage to Prince Charles and their subsequent divorce in 1996 – but will not tackle her relationship with Dodi al-Fayed.

Drinking green tea could help slow weight gain

A compound found in green tea could help keep the body from absorbing excess fat, slowing down weight gain even in those who are already obese, according to a new study published in the journal Obesity.

Researchers found that Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) – found in green tea – helped to slow weight gain in overweight mice when taken as a supplement to a high-fat diet.

While all of the mice were eating the same amount of the same food, the mice that were receiving EGCG gained 45 percent less weight than the control group. They also had higher levels of lipids in their waste, suggesting their bodies were not absorbing as much of the fat.

"There seems to be two prongs to this," study author Joshua Lambert explained to the Daily Mail, "First, EGCG reduces the ability to absorb fat and, second, it enhances the ability to use fat."

While a person would need to drink ten cups of green tea a day to match the levels of EGCG being fed to the mice, recent studies have shown that even a few cups a day can help control weight, noted Lambert.
