Shakira Talks to Elle

Born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, she was the daughter of a jewellery store owner and his wife.  Shakira said that although she was an only child, she had the benefits of older step-siblings from her father’s previous marriage.  At the age of eight, her father’s business collapsed, and the family’s comfortable life changed drastically.  Because the star knows poverty first-hand, as well as riches, Shakira has become committed to helping other Columbian families in need.

Shakira has created a foundation called Pies Descalzos, which offers aid to more than 3,000 children each year.  The program also provides schools across the country.

Needless to say, this has been a really challenging time for me and as I have always said, I have the greatest, most generous fans in the world."

As for her health, she said, "I am doing really well. Strangely, I feel clear and optimistic…perhaps more than ever.  I am on day 4 of my 33 radiation treatments and am feeling really good. As you know, my breast cancer was detected very early and I am completely blessed that it was removed and all I have to undergo in the way of treatment is radiation, strictly for preventative measures."
