Lawsuit against Kanye West dismissed

Rapper Kanye West is finished with court after an Illinois judge dismissed a copyright case filed against his 2007 song Stronger, reports MTV.

The case began in June 2010, when a Virginia man named Vincent Peters filed a federal copyright infringement suit against West, claiming that the rapper had stolen some of his lyrics.

Peters, who goes by the rap alias Vince P., claims that he had submitted his own track, also named Stronger, to West’s manager, John Monopoly, in 2006. Although Peters’ deal fell through, he claims that West’s track "copies significant and important parts of Peters’ lyrics identically or almost identically."

Seeking an undisclosed amount of money and to halt the distribution of West’s song, Peters cited examples of the infringement, including a hook used in the chorus.

"The hook portions of both songs constitute the most memorable portion of the song and make the songs appealing to the ear of the listener," states the suit.

Judge Virginia Kendall, however, did not agree with the claim and dismissed the case, saying that the two songs were not substantially similar.

Jason Derülo postpones new album due to illness

Singer-songwriter Jason Derülo has been forced to postpone the release of his new album under doctor’s orders to rest and protect his voice.

Due to concern about his vocal chords, the doctor has ordered the Miami native to rest his voice and take a break from the recording studio.

The Whatcha Say hitmaker informed fans on his Facebook page:  "So my throat doctor has put me on vocal rest for five days. Could you imagine not talking for five days? (It) sucks!

"Apparently if I don’t let my chords heal,” he added, “I may develop a serious problem. Such terrible timing, as I’m trying to complete my album!"

Jason Derülo, whose real name is Jason Joel Desrouleaux, was completing his second album at Maximedia Studios in Dallas, Texas when he heard the news.

In 2009, Derülo, 21, who has opened for Lady Gaga on tour, released his debut single Whatcha Say, which travelled up the charts to number one.

Adele goes country

Adele, Grammy for best new artist in 2008, doesn’t like to rest on her laurels. Rather than build on the success of her hit R&B disc 19, the British singer will try something new for her new record.

The 21-year-old Londoner, who was awarded best pop singer in 2008 for the song Chasing Pavements, was inspired by her visits to the Southern United States–so much so that she’s decided to do a 190-degree turn into Country music.

She says Rolling Stone magazine: "I got addicted to this Wanda Jackson hits album," the singer told Rolling Stone. "She’s so cheeky and so raunchy. She’s kind of like the female Elvis: really sexual, not afraid to embarrass herself."

Her prolonged stay in the American South has etter appreciation for country music: "I "I never was a fan of it growing up, because we don’t really have it in England," she says.

Back home last fall, the singer began to include a country-music flavour in her music.

Adele then recorded his second album in Malibu, California. She’s set to launch her country-accented record in September.

Def Leppard takes a break

Joe Elliott, lead singer of Def Leppard, confirmed to Metro UK that his band is going to chill for at least a year.

"I’m doing this because I have the time," said Elliott. "After you have a hit like Hysteria and you’re signed to the corporate machine it becomes an albatross around your neck. As much as our music is anthemic rock’n’roll it’s a business at the end of the day. It’s stressful and gets harder each time you make a record. No one’s comparing this to Hysteria, it’s got nothing to do with it. It’s a refreshing change. It’s like being a teenager in a 50-year-old body."

When the band suddenly canceled 23 concerts of their North American tour this year, citing "personal reasons", there were rumours about health issues and burnout.

Elliott has since refuted these by saying that he jsut wants to spend more time with his girlfriend who recently gave birth to her first child.

The group’s guitarist, Phil Collen, wasted no time starting his vacation. Last Friday (July 16), the 52-year-old musician married his girlfriend, the designer Helen L. Simmons, in Florida. The couple have been dating since 2008.

U2 reworking old songs

The Irish band U2 are currently working with Dave Hollister to revamp at least two of their songs.

Hollister, an R&B producer and member of the band Blackstreet, is working with the quartet to rework Thanks and All I Want Is You.

It’s still a mystery what U2 and Hollister’s intentions are for these adaptations: Will they be on a new record? Are they for a remix or a soundtrack?

U2 had to stop their world tour, 360°, after Bono, the band’s frontman has undergone emergency surgery back in May.

The singer seems to be fully recovered from this intervention as the group hit the road again starting Aug. 6 in Italy.

Last year, U2’s 360° tour made $311 million in ticket sales. By resuming the tour and rescheduling concerts canceled due to Bono’s operation, the tour should garner income totaling more than $600 million, becoming the most profitable tour in the history of music, eclipsing the Rolling Stones’ Bigger Bang Tour that ran from 2005-2007.

Joss Stone to be Bond girl

The 23-year-old star was chosen to participate in the new 007 Activision game.

Stone will appear in the game alongside the characters played in the Bond movies by Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Judi Dench (M).

Stone will sing an original track, I’ll Take it All, that she co-wrote with the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart (Eurythmics)

Die-hard 007 fans may have to content themselves with the new game for the forseeable future, as shooting plans for the 23rd Bond film have been postponed indefinitely due to lack of funds.

Stone, the red-maned singer with a proclivity for performing barefoot, can also be seen on stage in the coming weeks as she tours European music festivals in August.
