Kim Basinger Wants to Save the Tigers

The animal activist is against a decision the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made to send two tigers from a zoo in Mebane, North Carolina to a zoo in Baghdad.

The actress, who has been a member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for the last few years, issued a statement:  "It has already been shown that the animals at the Baghdad Zoo cannot be properly protected from the country’s military conflict. When the war began, hundreds of animals in the zoo were killed, stolen, eaten, or let loose by looters. The last two tigers escaped and were shot dead."

Basinger added, "The future is uncertain. Most of the people in Iraq still do not have access to basic necessities or a safe environment and Iraq remains a war zone: sending tigers there would place the animals squarely in harm’s way."

Tom Cruise and Church of Scientology Get Sued

Peter Letterese, who is an ex-member of the Church of Scientology, has filed a lawsuit in the sum of $250 million.

In documents submitted to the Southern district court in Florida on July 15, the former member  also accused actor Tom Cruise, who ranks second in line as a leader in the organisation behind David Miscavige. Cruise is regarded as the primary spokesperson in America and abroad by the Church.

Letterese, who claims that he was defrauded and harassed by the Church of Scientology, describes the religious sect as functioning like the Mafia and other criminal drug rings. He is asking authorities to investigate the group for corruption.

The director of public relations for the Church of Scientology, Karin Pouw, told the New York Daily News, "This is a frivolous suit based on falsehoods."

Tom Cruise’s attorneys have not made any comments on the accusations.

Sharon Stone Gets Slapped with a Colossal Lawsuit

New York attorney Ming Hai was outraged by a statement actress Sharon Stone made during the Cannes Film Festival, and is suing the Basic Instinct star for over a billion dollars.

Last May, the 50-year-old actress attempted to explain the stroke of bad luck the victims of the earthquake in China underwent by saying that they had "bad karma."  Subsequently, she provoked anger in several Chinese people involved in the disaster, by linking the earthquake’s 67 000 affected victims to the country’s treatment of Tibetans.

The star apologised for her statements, however the New York lawyer was dissatisfied and rallied 1 000 survivors from the quake to sue the actress.

Attorney Ming Hai stated, "For the families who have lost their loved ones or lost limbs or suffered severe injuries, your… statement and act has caused extreme emotional distress."

As a result of what the actress said, China has banned all of her films in the country.  Also, Christian Dior has dropped all of the ad campaigns featuring the star.

Rob Lowe vs. the Ex-Nanny

California Superior Court Judge Denise de Bellefeuille threw out charges from both sides yesterday (July 31) in Santa Barbara.

For several months, the two sides have been clashing with charges of sexual misconduct.  Gibson claims to have been a victim of sexual abuse and inappropriate actions by Lowe.

The actor claims that the former nanny wanted to extort $1.5 million in exchange for her silence.  He is charging Gibson with defamation and is asking for compensation for more than one million dollars.

Yesterday, the judge ruled that the 44-year-old actor cannot pursue his case of defamation, stating that the 24-year-old woman is protected by the laws of working conditions.

"This is a huge victory for us today," said Gibson’s lawyer, Gloria Allred. "We look forward to continuing with our sexual harassment suit against the Lowes."

The actor’s lawyer also saw the ruling as a victory. "We didn’t lose anything today," Lowe’s attorney Larry Stein told People. "I’m delighted with the dismissal we won, and in essence, our lawsuit against Gibson remains totally intact."

Gibson was accompanied by her father in court, while Lowe did not attend.

Since the accusations were filed last April, another former nanny, Laura Boyce, has claimed that she was also sexually harassed by the Brothers & Sisters star.

Paris and Britney Shown in Political Ads

The Democratic and Republican campaigns are pushing the envelope of originality to promote their candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain.

The latest ad, put together by John McCain’s camp, stars Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.  In the televised message, the two celebrities are shown beside Senator Obama, while a voice says, "He’s the biggest celebrity in the world, but is he ready to lead?"

According to People magazine, who spoke with Paris Hilton’s staff, the heiress was just as surprised as the rest of the world when she saw herself in the ad.  A rep said, "Miss Hilton was neither asked, nor did she give permission for the use of her likeness in the ad, and has no further comment."

Britney Spears has not commented on the ad.
