Twitter begins labelling tweets that have restricted visibility

Twitter has announced that notification labels for restricted Tweets is now live on the site. News of this latest update comes courtesy of the Twitter Safety account.

Tweets that are deemed to violate the company’s hateful conduct policy will now include a label to denote that this has occurred. Impacted tweets will now display a pop-up that reads “visibility limited: this Tweet may violate Twitter’s rules against Harmful Conduct.”

Twitter has infamously taken a more hands-off approach to its content moderation since being taken over by Elon Musk in April of last year.

General Motors to stop manufacturing Chevy Bolt EV and EUV

General Motors will end the production of its Chevy Bolt EV and EUV vehicles by the end of this year, according to chair and CEO Mary Barra. In a recent call with shareholders reported on by CNBC, Barra shared GM’s plans to phase out the two models.

The Bolt EV and EUV are both based on an older generation of battery cell technology. GM has since pivoted to using its new and improved Ultium batteries in all its electric vehicles.

It makes sense for the company to want to consolidate its production efforts using single-battery technology. This is doubly the case when you consider the safety issues GM has been dealing with in the outgoing tech.

GM first doubled down on its all-electric future with a rebranding in 2021.

Beyond the shareholder call, a Q1 2023 letter to shareholders is available to read online.

Apple planning to develop its own AI powered health coaching service

Apple is working towards its own artificial intelligence-powered health coaching service and mood tracker in the company’s latest attempt to bring health and wellness features to its users.

The news comes from a report from Bloomberg. The new service is codenamed ‘Quartz’ and is designed to help users maintain motivation to exercise and help improve sleep and eating habits. Apple plans to use AI and data from Apple Watches to create coaching programs tailored to each user, according to people with knowledge of the project.

The move follows the company’s recent push towards health and wellness, which may include an expansion of the health app to the iPad, complete with features to help improve users’ vision. It’s rumoured that the project Quartz will have its own app with an attached monthly fee.

The service is allegedly being pushed for a debut in 2024, barring postponement or cancellation. The project is being backed by several teams at Apple, such as its health, Siri and services divisions.

Apple also plans to launch an iPad version of the iPhone health app. The change will allow users to see electrocardiograms and health results in a larger format. The update is planned to be included as part of iPadOS 17 in the coming months.

Tools that allow emotion tracking are expected to be added to the health app later this year, allowing users to log their mood, answer questions about their day and compare results over time. Apple plans on unveiling the iPad health app as well as the tools for managing vision and emotions at its WWDC in June 2023.

These new health-based plans are a separate entity from Apple’s rumoured journaling app, which will not be designed to include health features.

iOS 17 might arrive with updates to lock screen, Apple Music, App Library

The iOS 17 rumour mill keeps churning.

A new leak from Weibo suggests we might be in for several small-yet-appreciated software adjustments when the new iPhone software is finally launched.

  • We can expect these new additions according to the post on the Chinese site:
  • Lock screen font size adjustment and sharable layouts
  • Apple Music interface tweaks and access to lyrics on the lock screen
  • The ability to rename App Library folders
  • Freely adjustable LED flashlight brightness slider
  • Control Centre design updates

The source doesn’t have a particularly reliable track record when it comes to leaks, but it did correctly anticipate the ‘Yellow’ iPhone 14 in advance of its official announcement.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 17 at WWDC on June 5th.

ChatGPT users can now turn off chat history to protect their privacy

OpenAI is taking its user privacy seriously. The company announced today that ChatGPT users can now turn off their chat history, allowing users to choose whether or not their conversations can be used to train OpenAI’s language models.

According to the company, conversations that are started when chat history has been disabled won’t be used to train the company’s models, and they won’t even appear in the history sidebar.

The control is rolling out now, and can be toggled on/off in ChatGPT’s settings.

OpenAI says even with chat history disabled, it will retain user chat data for 30 days to review them in cases where needed. After the thirty-day period, OpenAI will permanently delete the data.

In addition to the chat history feature, OpenAI is also working on a new ChatGPT Business subscription that offers users more control over their data, alongside aiding enterprises “seeking to manage their end users.” The new subscription will be available “in the coming months.”

Lastly, OpenAI is also introducing a new ‘Export’ option that would allow users to export their ChatGPT data and “understand what information ChatGPT stores.” When you export your data, you’ll receive a file with your conversations and all other relevant data in an email.

The Office is coming to Crave in Canada in May 2023

All nine seasons of the U.S. version of The Office are coming to Crave on May 1st.

Bell announced the news as part of its larger breakdown of new May content. The beloved NBC sitcom has been a staple on Netflix for years, with the streamer paying millions to retain the rights. However, NBC paid half a billion dollars to pull the series from Netflix to stream on its own Peacock platform in 2021. In Canada, where Peacock isn’t available, The Office has continued to stream on Netflix.

It’s unclear how this new Crave deal might affect The Office‘s availability on Netflix. It’s worth noting that there is no “last day to watch on Netflix” message for The Office, while Crave also isn’t claiming it’s the “new Canadian home” of the series as it has with the likes of Friends. MobileSyrup has reached out to Netflix to confirm that The Office will remain on its service beyond May 1st and will update this story once a response has been received.

This wouldn’t be the first time a series has streamed on multiple platforms. Last year, the fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale was released on Crave as usual in addition to Amazon’s Prime Video. It’s possible NBC has a similarly loose licensing agreement with The Office.

Samsung’s next Z Flip might come with a new always on display

Samsung might be updating its always-on display technology, according to reputable Twitter leaker @Revegnus. According to this latest rumour, the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature iPhone 14 Pro-inspired always-on display.

Samsung phones have featured always-on screens dating as far back as 2015’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. While Apple only introduced its own always-on display last year, the company did so in a less conventional way.

By default, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max always-on display dims the entire lock screen. On the other hand, Android solutions typically feature a black screen with minimal text, while Apple embraces the dimmed wallpaper look.

Apple’s implementation proved controversial, with the company eventually giving users the option to revert to a more Android-like experience.  Now, it looks like Samsung is looking to give its users a splash of iPhone flavour in return.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is shaping up to be a welcome upgrade over the previous generation. The product is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Watch 6 this summer.

Peloton launches its rental program in Canada

Peloton is bringing its rental program, which includes the Peloton Bike or Bike+, to Canada after a spell of success in the US market in 2022.

The move is an effort to provide Canadians with a more affordable and flexible option for indoor workouts, allowing users to test out Peloton bikes without the need for a long-term commitment.

Canadians in select provinces will now be able to rent month-to-month with the original Peloton Bike starting at $129/month and the Peloton Bike+ for $169/month. Both rental prices also include a $250 one-time set-up fee. The Peloton Bike+ differs from the original by featuring a larger, rotating screen and optional automatic resistance control for live classes, along with additional features.

Both monthly fees include the cost of a Peloton membership, giving users access to the company’s entire collection of live and on-demand classes. The classes span 14 different fitness styles, such as strength, cycling, yoga and meditation.

The Peloton Rental program is available now in all regions that the company currently delivers in Canada. The program also allows participants to choose whether or not they wish to continue renting or buy out their Bike/Bike+ during the rental period.

Bell’s 100GB Canada-U.S. plan now costs $5 more per month

Bell has joined Telus in charging more for its 100GB Canada-U.S. plan.

Earlier this month, Telus changed up its plans, replacing the $105/mo Canada-U.S. with 100GB of data with a 100/mo 100GB Canada-only plan and a $110/mo Canada-U.S. plan, effectively raising the cost of its Canada-U.S. plan.

Now Bell has followed suit, dropping the $105/mo plan for a pricier $110/mo plan. However, at the time of writing, Bell hadn’t adjusted its other plans or added a $100/100GB Canada-only plan to match Telus.

The move comes after both carriers hiked the cost of their daily roaming rates.

At the time of writing, Rogers still offered a $105/mo 100GB Canada-U.S. plan, though Rogers says the plan is on sale and normally costs $125/mo.

You can check out Bell’s plans here.
