Public Mobile offering $40 bill credit when you buy a $100+ phone

Telus flanker brand Public Mobile is offering a $40 credit to new customers who buy a phone from Public — as long as it costs $100 or more.

The offer runs until May 5th and has a few stipulations. First, it’s only for new customers and customers “must purchase a device and SIM from Public Mobile before May 5th and activate by May 19th.” Public says it will distribute the $40 as a bill credit within 90 days of activation.

The other thing of note is that all of Public’s phones are certified pre-owned. Depending on how you feel about pre-owned devices, that might be a turn-off, but if you’re trying to get a cheap phone, it’s not a bad way to do it. At the time of writing, Public had the following options:

  • Motorola G Pure – $145
  • Samsung Galaxy A03S – $159
  • Apple iPhone 8 – $189
  • Motorola G Power – $189
  • Apple iPhone 8 Plus – $239
  • Samsung Galaxy A13 – $259
    Samsung Galaxy S10 – $349
  • iPhone SE 2 – $349
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 FE – $349
  • TCL 20 Pro – $349
  • iPhone XR – $359
  • Galaxy S10+ – $429

A location timeline might be coming directly to Android settings app

Google Maps has a nifty option that lets you track your location history data. An opt-in feature, it lets you see a timeline of where you have been while on your commutes.

A potential update from Google might allow users to view a similar location timeline directly from the settings app on Android.

The possible change was discovered by Twitter user Nail Sadykov, who is also the editor of the Google News Telegram Channel. Sadykov was able to turn on hidden flags within Google Play Services to view the new setting.

Currently, the timeline feature can only be found within the Google Maps app. It’s fairly easy to navigate to, but having the information made available in settings would help with discoverability.

It remains unclear whether a location timeline in settings would be separated from the existing one in Google Maps.

Elon Musk burner Twitter account possibly leaked

A new post by Elon Musk is making the rounds on Twitter – but not for the reason he probably expected. In a screenshot sent out by the owner and CEO of the company, it appears he is logged into a secondary account in addition to his public one.

The post was intended to showcase the in-app monetization settings for content creators. However, it didn’t take users long to point out the display photo of Musk’s three-year-old son up at the top.

After some investigating, users were able to identify the profile as @ErmnMusk. The join date reads “November 2022,” and the account name is “Elon Test.”

Most of the tweets appear to be pretty mundane, simply asking users to follow the account. It’s the “replies” section that is raising some eyebrows, with references to night clubs among other more colourful things.

It is unconfirmed whether or not this account is actually Musk’s burner account. Nevertheless, the account has already amassed 32 thousand followers since yesterday.

You can check out the possible burner account here.

First look at official Pixel 7a case renders

We already know a lot about the upcoming Pixel 7a.

The phone will reportedly look very similar to its predecessor, and will borrow the metal camera visor design that differentiated the Pixel 7 series from the Pixel 6.

The device is also reported to sport a 6.1-inch OLED display and a 90Hz refresh rate. The device will be powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chipset and be available in Black, White and Blue colourways marketed as ‘Cotton,’ ‘Carbon’ and ‘Arctic Blue.’

Now, as shared by WinFuture (via 9to5Google), we’ve got our first look at the official Pixel 7a cases. WinFuture shared images of the upcoming cases alongside high-resolution press renders of the Pixel 7a.

According to WinFuture, in addition to the above-shown colours, Google may also offer an online-exclusive colourway, though it is currently uncertain what the colour could be.

Pricing for the cases wasn’t disclosed, though if the past is any indication, the case could be priced at $39, similar to the Pixel 6a case.

Bell announces 5G+ availability in select parts of Manitoba

Bell Canada has announced that its 5G+ service is now available in Manitoba. The expansion gives customers in select parts of the province access to 5G+ connectivity via Bell.

5G+ is a faster and more responsive version of traditional 5G mobile networks, with 5G+ speeds in Toronto running over 50 percent faster than before.

Bell’s 5G+ is specifically available in Headingley, Winnipeg, East St. Paul and St. Andrews and is expected to be faster and more responsive.

In the summer of 2022, Bell Canada began deploying 3500 MHz wireless spectrum, which powers 5G+ service across Atlantic and Western Canada, as well as in Ontario. Following the company’s recent expansion to Manitoba, Bell now offers 5G+ coverage to over 40 percent of Canadians.

Manitobans inside 5G+ coverage areas with a compatible 5G+ device and rate plan are now available to take advantage of Bell’s 5G+ speed. Residents outside of compatible areas can still access Bell’s 5G, 4G and LTE connections.

Focused on expanding multiple services, Bell is also bringing fibre internet service to Leamington, Ontario, in a project expected to finish by 2024.

Where to stream Scream VI in Canada

Ghostface is back.

Scream VI, the latest entry in the popular, long-running Scream slasher franchise, is now available to watch at home, six weeks after hitting theatres.

Helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (2022’s Scream), Scream VI follows Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) as they leave Woodsboro for New York City, only to encounter a new Ghostface (once again voiced by Roger L. Jackson).

Courteney Cox once again appears as Gale, while Hayden Panettiere reprises her Scream 4 of Kirby. Joining the cast, meanwhile, are Toronto’s Henry Czerny and Brantford, Ontario’s Devyn Nekoda. It’s also worth noting that the film was shot in Montreal.

If you missed Scream VI in theatres or simply want to rewatch the acclaimed gorefest, you’re in luck. The film is now available to stream exclusively on Paramount+ in Canada and elsewhere. Paramount+ costs $9.99/month. It’s worth noting that Wes Craven’s original four Scream movies are also on Paramount+, although the fifth film is only on Netflix.

Apple TV and Apple Music Windows app previews receive updates

Last year during Microsoft’s Surface event, the software giant announced that Windows users would soon be able to download native Apple TV and Apple Music applications on their machines.

Subsequently, in January, previews of Apple Music and Apple TV apps made their way to the Microsoft Store. Since the apps were in a ‘preview’ version, Apple had warned that some features may not function as intended.

While Apple hasn’t provided any updates about the apps since, Reddit users with keen eyes noticed some changes with the Apple Music app, as shared by MacRumors.

According to a Reddit post, the Apple Music preview application now includes support for Windows 11 media controls and keyboard shortcuts. It also seems to offer support for song lyrics and smoother continuous playback of consecutive lossless tracks.

The Apple TV app preview, on the other hand, appears to have received an update, but changes are currently unknown.

Back in January, when the Apple Music and Apple TV app previews made their way to the Microsoft Store, an ‘Apple Devices’ app preview was also spotted. The app allowed users to manage and sync their Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads and iPods, directly from their Windows machines. At the time, the app contained references to Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset and the software it might run on. References to “xrOS” and “RealityOS” have now reportedly been removed.

Apple warns that installing these apps will prevent iTunes for Windows from opening, making other forms of content, such as audiobooks and podcasts, inaccessible until a compatible version of iTunes is released or the preview apps are uninstalled.
