Upcoming Sonos Era speakers revealed in new leak

Sonos has two new speakers on the way, one set to replace the existing Sonos One and the other slated to showcase spatial audio capabilities.

The Verge detailed the new Era 100 and Era 300 Sonos speakers and shared marketing images it obtained of both speakers. According to the publication, Sonos plans for a March release of both speakers.

The Era 100 will reportedly cost about $250 USD (roughly $337.42 CAD), which The Verge notes is a slight increase over the $219 cost of the Sonos One speaker in the U.S. In Canada, the Sonos One costs $269 CAD — if Sonos follows a similar pricing scheme in Canada, the Era 100 could be $30 to $40 more, putting it in the low $300 range.

On the other hand, the Era 300 speaker will likely cost $450 USD (about $607.37 CAD), coming in under the cost of the Sonos Five speaker. The Verge suggests Sonos will keep the Five in the lineup rather than replace it with the Era 300.

Both speakers will offer Bluetooth audio playback and USB-C line-in, offering more choice and flexibility for using the speakers. The USB-C line-in will be particularly helpful, allowing people to plug in external sources like a turntable, something that’s not possible with the Sonos One. (One of the marketing images published by The Verge shows a Sonos Era 100 speaker with an extra cable going into it, likely the USB-C line-in.)

Additionally, both speakers will offer Wi-Fi 6 support, Bluetooth 5.0 and AirPlay 2. Sonos also plans to sell a “combo adapter” for plugging in the speakers over ethernet.

Interestingly, the Era speakers may be the first to support Trueplay on Android… sort of. Trueplay is Sonos’ tech for tuning speakers for the room they’re in. Currently, users need an iPhone or iPad to tune their speakers, but the Era 100 and 300 will support “quick tuning,” which uses the built-in microphones on the speakers to optimize for the room. The old tuning style, which involves walking around the room holding an iPhone or iPad, will still be available as well, and it will continue to not support Android.

All about spatial audio, but not with Apple

The Verge notes that the Era 100 speaker isn’t geared for spatial audio. It reportedly doesn’t include upward-firing drivers. Instead, it has two tweeters for true stereo sound and an enlarged mid-woofer for more powerful bass. The Verge stresses that the speaker is an evolved Sonos One with better performance.

The Era 300, on the other hand, is all about spatial audio. The size falls between the Sonos One and Five speakers, and the 300 offers six total drivers that push sound forward, left, right and up. When paired with either a Sonos Arc or Beam (Gen 2) as rear surrounds, a stereo pair of Era 300s will deliver immersive Atmos surround sound.

However, it sounds like customers might have some trouble getting access to spatial audio. The Verge reports that spatial audio tracks will be available from Amazon Music Unlimited, but Sonos hasn’t reached an agreement with Apple to use its Apple Music Dolby Atmos library (for now, that functionality remains exclusive to the HomePod, though you can play spatial audio through an Apple TV 4K connected to an Atmos speaker system, such as the Arc or Beam). Of course, this could change before the March release.

Apple isn’t the only tech company giving Sonos trouble, though. Thanks to an ongoing legal battle between Sonos and GoogleThe Verge reports that Google Assistant might not be on the new Era speakers. The company’s internal marketing specifically mentions Amazon Alexa, but not Assistant.

There will also be sustainability improvements built off previous announcements from Sonos.

Those interested can read the full report here.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 rumoured to ditch S Pen slot

Samsung’s upcoming Z Fold 5 might ditch the S Pen slot after all.

According to a report from Korean outlet ET NewsSamsung was initially working on including a slot for the S Pen but decided to scrap the idea on the final model. Reportedly, the slot would have increased the thickness of the device.

Samsung toyed with a thinner S pen to solve the issue but reportedly scrapped that idea as a thinner S Pen would mean a worse writing experience. The South Korean company is working on a thinner S Pen that doesn’t compromise the writing experience, but it won’t be ready in time for release.

“The hinge structure of the new foldable product has changed, and the internal space structure has also changed, making it difficult to mount the S Pen,” a source close to the matter told ET News.

However, the Z Fold 5 will support the S Pen, similar to its predecessors, the Z Fold 4 and Z Fold 3 — there just won’t be a built-in slot for it.

The Z Fold 5 will likely launch in August or September this year alongside the Z Flip 4.

Crave acknowledges tech issues with app following Episode 6 of The Last of Us

On Sunday, February 19th, Crave subscribers experienced technical issues when attempting to watch Episode 6 of the highly acclaimed series The Last of Us. Crave quickly issued a response, acknowledging the situation.

Upon the arrival of The Last of Us’ sixth episode dubbed Kin, many eager Canadian viewers jump to Crave to start watching. However, throughout the duration of the episode, many were left frustrated. For one reason or another, Crave’s app began signing people out. Thus, many viewers were left frustrated, unable to see the conclusion of the episode.

During the tail end of the last night’s episode of The Last of Us, Crave acknowledged the issues subscribers faced. “Our team is aware that some customers are experiencing technical difficulties with the Crave app, the @CraveHelp account said.

HBO’s The Last of Us has become appointment viewing for many fans of the video game series and newcomers alike. Naturally, these tech issues stirred some frustration. “We understand the urgency of the matter and are working as fast as possible to resolve it,” the account went on to say.

To make matters worse, the exact same tweet was published on Sunday, February 5th. The timing of the previous tweet was nearly the same down to the minute. Anecdotally, it doesn’t appear as though there is a consistent platform that is giving audiences trouble. As of the time of writing, it’s hard to say whether the issue predominantly stems from the mobile, smart TV, or console app.

It’s also not clear what issue Crave is facing exactly. Given the popularity of The Last of Us series, it stands to reason that perhaps there is too much demand. Given the case, it will be interesting to see whether or not Crave is able to rebound from this as the series continues over the next three weeks.

New EV Test Track re-energizes the Canadian International Auto Show

After a two-year hiatus, The Canadian International Auto Show is back in Toronto with an extensive catalog of cars you can actually buy and supercars most can only dream of affording.

However, with the growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs), this year’s Auto Show offers a new attraction, an indoor test track that’s available to all attendees that hold a full license.

I’ll admit that I’m not the biggest fan of electric vehicles for purely superficial reasons. I find EVs sterile looking and quite boring to look at.

An EV should be more futuristic, with looks like a DeLorean, a fully digital touch-screen dashboard across the entire car and offer design features like a wacky blue interior to help it stand out.

Instead, the electric vehicle market is saturated with SUVs and infotainment systems that consist of a tablet slapped in the middle of a dashboard without much thought.

Because the average EV often looks so uninspiring, I assumed the driving experience would evoke the same feelings. In that sense, The Canadian International Auto Show’s new EV indoor test track is the perfect opportunity to target an audience that feels apprehensive about these cars.

Besides, who wouldn’t want to drive around an indoor test track?

Attendees have a choice of 13 cars from multiple car manufacturers including the following:

Cadillac Lyriq
Chevrolet Bolt/Bolt EUV
Hyundai Ioniq 5/Kona
Kia Niro/EV6
Nissan Ariya
Subaru Solterra
Lexus NX450h+
Toyota RAV4 Prime/bZ4X
VinFast VF 8

For my test track session, I drove the Hyundai Kona, the Ioniq 5’s slightly less popular, smaller sibling. It took about half an hour to finally take the car for a drive, though the wait time changes based on the model you want to drive.

As expected, there are rules while on the test track, the main one being that you can’t exceed more than 30km/h. This means you’re not tapping into your inner Lewis Hamilton but rather channeling how you’d drive with your granddad in the passenger seat. It also means you don’t get the chance to fully experience what it would be like to drive the EV on a real road.

These limitations make sense because otherwise, the EV test track experience would shut down after a few hours due to crashes and angry drivers barking at each other. Once I got into the Kona, my driving session lasted roughly 5 minutes (which is equivalent to two laps around the test track).

After my session was over, I couldn’t help but feel that the experience felt a bit short. This would have been solved by having at least one more lap so you can get a feel for your selected car. Despite my complaints, I enjoyed my time at the EV test track, and compared to my experience at previous Auto Shows, it’s a great interactive attraction.

On the more positive side, I like that despite the limiting rules of engagement, you still have complete control over the car. It’s not a simulated experience or a glorified joy ride. It also accomplished its goal, not necessarily selling you on a specific EV but rather opening your mind up to visiting a dealership for a proper test drive.

While I’m not totally sold on an electric vehicle yet, I am a lot more willing to test drive one in the future. The Canadian International Auto Show is open until February 26 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The EV test track can be accessed on the 800 floor.

How to stream The Weeknd’s Live at SoFi Stadium concert in Canada

Earlier this month, Canadian artist The Weeknd revealed the first look at his upcoming concert event, The Weeknd: Live at SoFi Stadium, is set to launch on February 25th. Available as part of an HBO broadcast, here’s how you can stream the concert event in Canada.

Following the premiere of his new live video for Die For You, The Weeknd announced his Live at SoFi Stadium concert event. Filmed in November 2022, The Weeknd filmed his performance as part of an HBO live special and is now ready to release it to the world.

“Experience the sold-out show like never before,” the description reads on the official trailer.

The Weeknd: Live at SoFi Stadium was filmed in L.A. at the SoFi Stadium as part of the concluding stops on the Scarborough-born artist’s After Hours Til Dawn Tour. The special appears to be in some way a means to make it up to his fans. In September, The Weeknd was forced to cancel his second show in L.A. after losing his voice. Weeks later, the artist continued his tour but returned to SoFi Stadium on November 26th and 27th.

While the special is being broadcasted on HBO Max in the U.S. and other eligible regions, it’s available via Crave in Canada. The concert special is said to be roughly 95 minutes in length. The Weeknd serves as one of the many executive producers on the project.

Crave is available in Canada, starting at $9.99 per month.

OnePlus 11 Concept phones teased, featuring LED light design

Shenzhen-based company OnePlus is teasing its new smartphone with a design element that makes it stand apart from its competition. The One Plus 11 Concept has been revealed by the company, with an imminent full-scale announcement.

While the OnePlus 11 has already been in the hands of consumers, many consider it a safe entry into the company’s portfolio. It’s said to provide many innovations that keep it competitive in the market. However, some believe it doesn’t elevate itself above the OnePlus 10T or 10 Pro. However, OnePlus appears to be changing that. The new Concept phone comes with a “flowing back” design comprised of LED lighting.

This unique design seems to indicate OnePlus is leaning heavily into the PC gaming pool for design aesthetics. Based on early images revealed by the company, the One Plus 11 Concept has a winding blue LED light covering its rear. The light then circles around the camera module. This is all encased in a unibody glass design. The company has gone on to state the lights “show the engineering breakthroughs of the OnePlus 11 Concept by highlighting the icy blue pipelines which run through the entire back of the phone, almost like OnePlus 11 Concept has its own series of blood vessels.”

Folding in design aspects that mirror a gaming PC could attract the eyes of those beyond One Plus 11 users. An LED lighting array could pair well with the device’s 6.7-inch LTPO3 Fluid AMOLED display. Additionally, the device offers 120Hz and is powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

If you’re eager to learn more, OnePlus will debut more details on the device during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona on February 27th.

How HBO’s The Last of Us created its Jackson, Wyo. setting in Alberta

The past weekend, the sixth episode of HBO’s The Last of Us premiered. Following the heartbreaking events from last week’s episode, the sixth episode, named Kin, introduces us to a thriving community in Jackson, Wyoming.

The series of The Last of Us remixes the location of Jackson in a few very important ways. As seen in the episode, the community of Jackson closely resembles the western-inspired settlement seen in The Last of Us Part II. However, there is still a notable mention of the hydroelectric dam, which serves as the basis for the original game’s locale.

The Last of Us underwent production in Alberta, Canada. As such, the community of Jackson was built in Canmore, a small town in the province. For fans of the games, HBO’s rendition of Jackson closely resembles its video game counterpart. So much so, that many scenes feature mirror sceneries. The Last of Us’ production team set out to make Jackson a fresh change of scenery for audiences while also staying true to the game.

“The buildings there have a real rustic feel, and this beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains at the end of its main street,” production designer John Paino told Los Angeles Times in an interview.

In the games, Jackson stands as a reminder of what civilization used to be like prior to the Cordyceps virus that plagued the world. Episode 6 gives us a similar look at the town. Thanks to the nearby dam, Jackson has electricity, running water, etc. Established seven years prior to Joel and Ellie’s arrival, Jackson is bustling with 300 survivors, sharing responsibilities. The town includes an operational theatre, bar, and grand hall, where community members come to eat meals together. “The barbecue place where Joel and Ellie have their first meal, it’s decorated with banners that might have been made by the children of the community,” Paino says.

What did this all mean for Canmore? Well, production had the difficult task of transforming the sleepy town into a thriving community of post-apocalyptic survivors. The production team went on to build stables and makeshift greenhouses on top of empty parking lots. Screen-ready sidewalks and railroad ties were also installed. Paino’s team also built fake exteriors for a number of the existing buildings. Plus, the rather large wooden barricade shown to surround Jackson was smaller in scale. It actually only covered 60 feet on both sides of a major street. This was all done while not disturbing the day-to-day life of residing members of Canmore.

After production concluded, Paino’s team disassembled its TV version of Jackson. Admitting that some of the barricade walls were used for a set in Episode 7, most of it did end up being thrown in a wood chipper.

In a recent interview, lead actor Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, revealed his thoughts on Canmore. “Every inch of Canmore was just this magical little town… with really great fudge,” Pascal said. Bella Ramsey, who is cast as Ellie, has remarked, “My favourite place that we went to was Canmore, for sure’.”

Paino concludes by wondering if Canmore will become a hotspot for fans of The Last of Us. Perhaps Canmore will see similar foot traffic to Water White’s house from Breaking Bad. “It’s a really beautiful area, and there’s great skiing and hot springs up there, so I’m for it.”

The Last of Us airs on Crave in Canada each Sunday at 9 pm ET/6 pm PT.

Exient’s Ultimate Sackboy now available on iOS and Android

Following last month’s reveal, PlayStation’s Ultimate Sackboy is now available on iOS and Android. Developed and published in partnership with U.K.-based studio Exient, Ultimate Sackboy is an endless runner game.

Ultimate Sackboy stars PlayStation’s mascot, originating from the LittleBigPlanet franchise. Players take on the role of Sackboy as he runs through a variety of levels, avoiding obstacles. Players must swipe their screen to move tracks, jump across hazards, and swing to safety. As players progress through the game, new Tiers unlock, allowing Sackboy to explore new tracks. The game also incorporates a Leaderboard system that players can strive to reach the top of.

As with other endless runner titles, players can collect Bubbles within each level to unlock cosmetic items such as costumes. Much like LittleBigPlanet, Ultimate Sackboy offers hundred of clothing options to unlock, upgrade, and collect.

Ultimate Sackboy is launching with its own battle pass feature. Exient refers to it as Marathon. Throughout the game’s first season, players can unlock rewards by completing daily missions. The Season 1 Pass includes the Astronaut costume, which many players many recognize as being available in previous LittleBigPlanet games. Each season runs for 28 days, with Season 2 kicking off on March 22nd.

This isn’t Sackboy’s first stint on mobile devices. Previously, studio Firesprite took a crack at an endless runner with the character. This previous installment was 2014’s Run Sackboy! Run!

Ultimate Sackboy has been available in closed beta across several regions, including Canada. Following its beta period, Exient is releasing its new title worldwide. Players can download the game from the App Store or the Play Store.

Buick unveils new forward-thinking Wildcat EV concept in Canada

GM is showcasing the Buick Wildcat EV concept across the Canadian Auto Show circuit to establish that an all-electric future will include a brand that’s seen brighter days in the past.

If pushing the envelope on design is part of the story, then Buick hasn’t been synonymous with that sort of thing — at least not lately. Once a brand leaning toward luxury, Buick escaped the proverbial scrap heap in the 2009 bailout and subsequent restructuring that flatlined the likes of Pontiac, Saturn, Saab and Hummer. But like Hummer, EVs are an opportunity to revisit a brand’s purpose and reintroduce it to new drivers.

The Wildcat is still a concept, yet it looks like a radical departure for Buick, including the new tri-shield logo adorned at the front. The pickings have been slim for a while now. Up to February 2023, there are only three models available in Canada: Encore, Enclave and Envision — all of them crossovers or SUVs. There are other models, but only in overseas markets, like China. The Wildcat is a sedan, perhaps marking a change in strategy.

Design

It’s funny because “Buick” and “sedan” went together for a long time. The market shift to crossovers and SUVs has been a boon to keeping Buick alive in North America, but the Wildcat is supposed to be a nod to the brand’s legacy with a focus on its all-electric future. Beauty is subjective, but I think this vehicle looks pretty slick, and it apparently influenced the design for the new 2024 Encore GX, and will do so for others too.

This EV concept is itself inspired by the Wildcat of old, when Buick first unveiled a concept under the name in 1953. Its history in muscle performance also plays a role here, given the power this concept is supposed to have, though those details are still unclear because it’s not meant to sell to consumers. The 2 x 2 coupe design features a lower centre of gravity thanks to a sloped roofline that appears to merge with the windshield and windows.

From the headlights to the tail lights, even down to charging indicators in the hatchback glass and the turbine-looking wheels, everything just looks flashy.

I didn’t get to sit inside, but Buick chose to try a few things in the cabin as well. The translucent steering wheel is one of them, as is the aluminum trim that seems to be everywhere. The centre console “floats” from the front to the rear seats, while a 30.4-inch touchscreen cuts across the driver’s side over to the infotainment screen in the middle of the dash.

Buick says the interior was “built to be a platform for futuristic features such as artificial intelligence, biometrics and aromatherapy.” That means it would theoretically be able to monitor a driver’s heart rate and adjust vehicle settings to calm any nerves, like dimming cabin lights, activating the massage feature in the seat or releasing an aromatic fragrance. No surprise, it’s calling this “Zen Mode.”

All in on electric

GM’s stated goal is to be fully electric by 2035, while Cadillac will lead the charge (no pun intended) by pulling that off five years earlier. It’s also been confirmed technologies in the Wildcat EV concept will make their way to upcoming Buicks. We just don’t know what and when.

Since Buick is keeping the electrification specs and features closer to the chest, company reps didn’t reveal anything about range, charging or performance. It’s a fully drivable vehicle, that much is clear, except there’s nothing official about the powertrain or even how driver autonomy might figure into the whole thing.

Going forward, Buick EVs will fall under a common name, Electra, fitting right in with the existing models that all start with the letter ‘E’. The company was also mum on whether it is testing specific electric driving features or even swapping out parts. It was built with GM’s Ultium battery platform, the underside housing the cells and forming the basis for the chassis.

Getting younger

Buick knows it needs to cater to a younger crowd to compete long-term, and isn’t really hiding that. The design all but confirms it, as it bears so little resemblance to anything in the current lineup. The words “dynamic,” “fresh” and “bold” came up often in conversations I had with reps at the show.

Over the next 18 months, Buick plans to release about five new vehicles “that will have a lot of cues” taken from the Wildcat EV. We’ll have to see when they roll out.
