Acanac launches limited time offer – 6 months free internet for Start.ca and Altima Customers

Acanac is providing a new deal specifically for Start.ca and Altima customers.

For over 19 years, Acanac, an internet provider based in Ontario and Quebec, has provided internet service to its customers. Now, Acanac has announced a new limited-time offer for customers looking to save big on their monthly internet bill.

Start.ca or Altima customers who switch to any of Acanac’s internet services – including plans that offer speeds up to 1Gbps – will receive their first six months completely free of charge.

With the increase in competition in the telecom marketplace lately, this is a very competitive offer and good news for potential customers. It’s also important to note that this deal is only available for a limited time.

While most internet providers offer discounts at only specific speeds, this deal is available on any plan in the Acanac line-up, including speed tiers of up to 1Gbps in Ontario and up to 400Mbps in Quebec. The company is also waiving modem, installation, and activation fees. A one-year contract is required to obtain the 6-month offer.

If you’re a Start.ca or an Altima customer, this is an offer worth considering – especially compared to other deals currently in the market. You can check out the deal at acanac.com/altima or acanac.com/start.

Apple CEO says layoffs are ‘a last resort’

Thousands of people have lost their jobs due to recent layoffs at leading tech companies worldwide, but Apple employees aren’t part of that group, at least for now.

This is because Apple CEO Tim Cook belives layoffs aren’t the only answer to reduce costs.

“I view layoffs as a last resort kind of thing,” Cook told the Wall Street Journal. “You can never say never.”

While layoffs can’t be completely ignored, Cook told the publication there are other ways to reduce costs. Apple is “managing costs very tightly and is curtailing hiring in certain areas while continuing to hire in others,” he said.

But other factors also play a role in Apple retaining employees.

As 9to5Mac points out, the company didn’t rush to grow its employee count over the last couple of years like other tech companies did. Citing a January 21st report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple only grew its employee base by 20 percent between September 2019 and September 2022. In comparison, its competitors increased hiring between 57 percent and 100 percent.

However, it remains unclear if this will stay true for long. Apple’s most recent quarterly report shows the company’s most significant revenue decline since 2019.

Google and Spotify are among the many companies to recently layoff employees.

Google to hold Search, Maps event with AI focus on February 8

Google plans to host an online event dubbed ‘Live from Paris’ on February 8th, where the company will talk about AI, Search, Maps and more.

In the event description on the YouTube page for the event, Google notes that it’s “reimagining how people search for, explore and interact with information, making it more natural and intuitive than ever before to find what you need.” The company goes on to note that it’s “opening up greater access to information for people everywhere, through Search, Maps and beyond.”

Moreover, Android Police reports that Google told the publication it plans to talk about how it will use AI to reshape search.

While that all sounds interesting, it’s worth noting the timing of all this. For one, Google typically doesn’t do announcements like this early in the year — we’d see these at the company’s annual I/O developer conference instead. But that conference is still happening in May as usual.

This suggests Google is trying to react quickly to OpenAI and ChatGPT. Reports have swirled for the last few weeks that Google has gone “code red” over ChatGPT and is rushing to respond, such as by sharing a recent research project called ‘MusicLM‘ that makes music with AI and reportedly testing a ChatGPT-like chatbot called ‘Apprentice Bard’ based on Google’s LaMDA language model. (Yes, the same one that an ex-Google employee claimed was sentient.)

Adding to that, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said on a recent earnings call that Google was preparing to let people “interact directly” with its newest language models “as a companion to search.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft has also been in the news for its massive investments in OpenAI and reported plans to integrate ChatGPT into various products, like Bing search. More recently, Microsoft revealed its Teams Premium service with AI capabilities powered by the GPT-3.5 language model — the same one used by ChatGPT.

It’ll be interesting to see how Google responds to all this, though it seems we may learn that sooner rather than later. Moreover, Android Police suggested Google was pushing its internal teams tasked with overseeing fairness and ethics in AI to approve projects faster, which could have significant drawbacks if AI projects aren’t properly vetted before the public gets access to them.

TikTok to begin testing feature to reset ‘For You’ page

TikTok’s ‘For You’ page never ceases to present eerily-appropriate videos all thanks to its algorithm. However, there may soon be a way for users to reset the machine and start fresh.

Apparently, a new feature is in the works dubbed ‘Refresh.’ A TikTok spokesperson confirmed the feature is being tested. Once enabled, it may offer a way for users to clean the slate. Currently, TikTok attempts to cater videos to you all based on how you use the app. Whether it’s search terms, videos watched, or pages you’ve visited, it’s all used to curate your For You page.

TikTok hopes to provide a way for users to reset the videos that are served. Perhaps the assortment of videos simply isn’t entertaining anymore. Or maybe your For You page has crossed over into content that isn’t relevant. Either way, an answer may be on the horizon.

It’s said that the testing phase will begin in the next few days. However, once it has begun, only a small selection of users will have access to the Refresh feature.

TikTok’s algorithm has always been under the microscope of regulators and government officials. In Canada, and to a much larger extent in the U.S., concerns over how the Chinese-owned app secures user data are constantly a topic of conversation.

Last month, TikTok employees admitted that the algorithm is built to decide what does viral. This is on top of TikTok staff and parent company ByteDance also playing a part in an internal practice known as “heating.” Naturally, this has led to quite a conversation on the validity of TikTok’s For You feed and whether videos are organically fed to users.

Late last year, TikTok did roll out a feature to enable users to soon see why videos end up on their For You page. When clicking the ‘Share’ button, users can now see a ‘Why this video’ option, which reveals why the video came across their page. The company claims this option is due to the company’s desire to be more transparent.

Netflix’s Squid Game competitors say it’s as nightmarish as the original show

Following the enormous success of Squid Game, Netflix greenlit its own reality game show inspired by the South Korean series. Much like the show, 456 contestants are expected to compete in reflections of the deadly contest in hopes of winning $4.56 million USD (around $6.07 million CAD). However, the production of this series has been said to be nothing short of disastrous.

According to contestants (who chose to remain anonymous when speaking to Rolling Stone), the Squid Game reality game show is rigged and working conditions are intense. In an extensive report, contestants recount their experience being recruited and what it was like on set.

Squid Game: The Challenge is the official name of the game show and filming began last Monday. The show is being co-produced by Studio Lambert and The Garden, who recruited contestants through a variety of means. Some applied after seeing targeted ads on social media. It’s alleged that others, including TikTok influencers, were pre-selected. A former participant speaking to Vice said that they underwent a background check, had a physician sign off on a medical assessment and were told by a psychologist that the experience would be intense.

Production of the show is being held in England. All 456 participants were reportedly expected to be available between two to four weeks, depending on how long they lasted in the mock version of the deadly games. Participants were settled into a London-based hotel and fitted with a green bracelet. Studio Lambert is said to have issued detailed onboarding procedures, COVID-19 tests, and orientation videos. However, participants were strictly forbidden to speak to one another while in the hotel and travel to the set via bus. Production staff monitored the actions and reprimanded anyone breaking this rule.

Adding to this, the accommodations on site of productions sound akin to the Fyre Festival. Participants were taken to a freezing airplane hangar at Cardington Airfield. Here, they were enacting a version of ‘Red Light, Green Light.’ It’s alleged that the hangar felt as cold as -10 degrees Celsius and this segment lasted as long as nine hours. However, producers allege filming only took two hours. Participants were also apparently served cold breakfast sandwiches and “weak coffee.”

However, it wasn’t until many participants began breaking the ‘no communications’ rule that a bigger picture was painted. In a holding room, contestants began noticing that certain people were given microphone packs that worked. Others were given a pack that wasn’t even functional. It’s alleged that some contestants were pre-selected to advance despite what happened in the actual game. One specific contestant claims an eliminated player was actually put back into the game.“It really wasn’t a game show. It was a TV show, and we were basically extras in a TV show,” one source explains to Rolling Stone.

Thus, Squid Game: The Challenge earned an internal moniker of “Rigged Game.”

Once it became time to shoot the Red Light, Green Light game, participants were given hand and foot warmers and a fake blood pack. The latter of which was used to mimic the deaths eliminated participants experienced in the series. When filming began, foot warmers were taken away from the contestants. As the game progressed, many participants were stuck in place for upwards of 30 minutes, unable to move due to the game’s rules.

The freezing conditions are said to have led to at least 10 people collapsing during the game. In a horrifying mirror image of the Squid Game series, other contestants couldn’t offer their help due to the risk of being eliminated. It’s alleged that as people fell, some began to convulse on the ground. Medics were then sent to the site. Rather than forego filming, masked production members in jumpsuits made their way onto the field with black coffins and blocked the medics.

“People were beating themselves up, including myself, around the fact that you’ve got a girl convulsing and we’re all stood there like statues. On what planet is that even humane?” one contestant said in the report.

More evidence supporting the pre-selected contestants and their “storyline” was noticed during filming. It’s alleged that some contestants who had an operational microphone clearly moved and were not eliminated. Others claim that they were told they had been eliminated despite not moving.

At the time of writing, Studio Lambert and The Garden have not commented on the allegations. Before production even began, many questioned whether Netflix even saw the irony in greenlighting a game show like this given the themes of the series. Currently, there is no release date set for the 10-episode reality series.

Ryan Reynolds surprises media class at Toronto’s Seneca College

A Seneca College journalism class got a big surprise on Wednesday when none other than Ryan Reynolds dropped in on them.

The Vancouver-born actor was given a tour of the campus’ faculty of communication, art and design. As part of that visit, he humourously took over their broadcast, stepping in front of a green screen to read from a prompter.

“It was an honour. It was a pleasure. I hope I didn’t ruin your entire project,” said Reynolds.

Speaking to The Toronto Star, Seneca journalist professor Bill Hutchison said Reynolds was checking out Seneca’s media facilities for his production company, Maximum Effort.

After his visit, Reynolds took to Twitter to thank Seneca and said he “wish[ed] something like this existed” when he was starting out. As the Star notes, Reynolds took a criminology course at then-named Kwantlen College (now Kwantlen Polytechnic University) but dropped out and moved to LA to pursue acting.

It’s unclear why the Vancouver native was checking out Seneca, specifically, but it’s worth noting that he already has ties to Toronto through his charity work with SickKids.

It’s unclear whether Reynolds got anything out of the visit in terms of his production company, but regardless, everyone seems to have enjoyed the visit.

Nintendo Switch is Canada’s best-selling console for the fifth year in a row

It’s no surprise that the Nintendo Switch is a global darling. However, according to Nintendo of Canada, the Switch was the best-selling console in the country in 2022. This marks a five-year run for the Switch and its overwhelming success in the country.

During an extensive interview with Financial Post’s Chad Sapieha, Nintendo of Canada’s Susan Pennefather said that last year was “another blockbuster year for Nintendo” in Canada.

The past year marked the arrival of many premier titles for the company. The Nintendo Switch’s momentum was further propelled by the likes of Splatoon 3 (7.90 units sold), Kirby and the Forgotten Land (5.27 million), and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The latter of which became the fastest-selling Pokémon game, selling over 10 million copies within its first three days. The Pokémon series alone has seen lifetime sales of more than 440 million units worldwide, according to Pennefather.

As of January, it’s estimated that the Nintendo Switch has sold 118.69 million units across its five years on the market. This puts the Switch as the third best-selling platform alongside the PlayStation 2’s 155 million units and the Nintendo DS’ 154 million.

Pennefather attributes much of the Switch’s success in Canada to its strong IP catalogue. One of which is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a re-release of a seven-year-old title. The base game alone has been a cult hit, reaching upwards of 48.41 million units sold. However, its Booster Course Pass DLC has helped secure the title’s spot in the top 10 games sold each month.

Further on in the interview, Pennefather cites a recent survey from the Entertainment Software Association of Canada. In it, it’s said that 53 percent of Canadians play video games on a regular basis. Half of this figure is comprised of females. Nintendo of Canada believes that the company “has very accessible, family-friendly games.” Due to this and the name recognition many Nintendo franchises have, Pennefather believes Nintendo has the right combination of hardware and software to be the best-selling system in the country.

Nintendo is already bracing for another big year ahead of it. As the Switch enters its sixth year on the market, the company has already launched Fire Emblem Engage to much critical acclaim. However, it’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which is set for May, that has many Canadians waiting with bated breath. The release of this game alone is enough to believe that Nintendo can maintain its driving force.

On top of appealing software, Nintendo is also returning to the big screen with Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film hits theatres on April 7th in Canada. It will surely attract eyes to Nintendo’s hardware and software featuring gaming’s favourite plumber.
