Thankfully, Xbox confirmed with The Verge that any of these games that are playable on Xbox One and Series X/S via backwards compatibility will remain available. Further, 360 players who purchase any of these games before February 7th can continue playing and even re-download them past this date.

It should be noted that the games that are being removed vary depending on the country, but here’s the Canada-specific list:

Google is reportedly testing its own ChatGPT-like chatbot

Google is reportedly testing its own ChatGPT-like chatbot called “Apprentice Bard.”

According to a CNBC report, Google is looking to use ‘Apprentice Bard,’ which offers human-like responses, similar to ChatGPT. The chatbot uses Google’s conversational technology LaMDA.

“As a result of ChatGPT, the LaMDA team has been asked to prioritize working on a response to ChatGPT,” reads one internal Alphabet memo viewed by CNBC. “In the short term, it takes precedence over other projects,” reads the memo.

As reported by CNBC, ‘Apprentice Bard’ looks similar to ChatGPT. Currently, Google employees can enter questions in the tool and get an answer framed in human-like conversational text. The employees can then give feedback on the response. “Based on several responses viewed by CNBC, Apprentice Bard’s answers can include recent events, a feature ChatGPT doesn’t have yet.” ChatGPT’s data is limited to the year 2021.

For example, an employee asked Apprentice Bard whether there would be another round of layoffs at Google. Google laying off employees is a recent news event, and the chatbot knew about it. “According to my database access, it is unlikely for Google to conduct another round of layoffs in 2023,” read the chatbot’s response. “Layoffs are generally conducted to reduce costs and structure, but the company is doing well financially. In fact, Google’s revenue increased by 34% in 2021, and the company’s stock price has risen by 70% since January 2022.”

Further, according to CNBC, Google is also reportedly testing alternate versions of its homepage. One of the versions reportedly gets rid of the “I’m feeling lucky’ button, and replaces it with prompts for potential questions users might wanna ask. “It also showed a small chat logo inside the far right end of the search bar,” wrote CNBC.

Tim Hortons sold your data, so you can now claim a free coffee and donut

Tim Hortons customers can now claim a free hot beverage and baked good as part of a class-action lawsuit settlement.

In a February 1st email, the coffeehouse giant reached out to customers who had used the Tim Hortons app between April 1st, 2019 and September 30th, 2020.

Starting February 1st, eligible customers can sign into their Tim Hortons account and claim the free items in the ‘Offers’ section. You’ll have one year to claim them and up until January 31st, 2025 to use it. Those who did not receive the email but feel they should have can contact Tim Hortons’ digital support team.

This all comes after a 2020 joint investigation between then-federal privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien and his provincial counterparts which found that Tim Hortons had sold the geolocation data of its app users. Ultimately, the privacy watchdogs ruled that Tim Hortons had collected “highly personal” information about customers without their consent.

Multiple class-action lawsuits were then filed against Tim Hortons parent company Restaurant Brands International (RBI), which resulted in the Supreme Court of Quebec approving a settlement last July. While RBI agreed to the settlement without any admission of liability, the company says it has taken measures to delete any geolocation data collected from app users. It adds that it has instructed its third-party vendor, Radar Labs, to do the same.

Tim Hortons is directing customers who want more information into the settlement to this website.

Nothing’s Ear (2) wireless earbuds could look a lot like the Nothing Ear (1)s

Carl Pei’s Nothing Ear (1) earbuds were an overall critical success thanks to their great transparent design, decent battery life and a solid accompanying app.

Now, the London, England-based company is reportedly working on the successor to the Ear (1), and leaked press renders of the buds show a rather similar design.

First shared by reliable industry leaker @OnLeaks (via SmartPrix), the Ear (2)s seemingly only feature slight visual changes when compared to the Ear (1).

As reported by SmartPrix, the only external visual difference between the Ear (1) and the Ear (2) is the change in position of the noise-canceling microphone.

The microphone was located at the top of the earbud in the Ear (1), but has seemingly been moved to the side of the earbud, as seen in the image below. Minor internal changes also result in a slightly different look on the stem of the earbud.

SmartPrix also revealed that the new earbuds would feature personalized ANC, allowing the user to set the intensity of noise cancellation according to their preference. There will also be a transparency mode, which was also present on the Ear (1), alongside support for dual connectivity, allowing the device to be paired two two devices at once for ease of switching.

“Nothing is also adding support for Advanced EQ with the custom settings and the Find Earbuds Feature,” concluded SmartPrix.

It is currently unknown when the Ear (2) could release, but considering how detailed the press renders look, it could be a matter of weeks until we see the buds announced.

OpenAI releases its own AI-written text detector

After a 22-year-old from Toronto made a third-party ChatGPT detector tool to determine whether a piece of text was written by a human or an AI, OpenAI is itself now introducing a new “AI Classifier” for “indicating AI-written text.”

“We’re launching a classifier trained to distinguish between AI-written and human-written text,” reads the tool’s page on OpenAI’s website. The company says that while it is impossible to “reliably” detect AI-written text, it believes that good clarifiers can inform mitigations for false claims regarding a piece of text that was written by AI but claimed to be human-written.

The company makes it very clear that its classifier is not fully reliable. In its tests, the classifier correctly identified 26 percent of AI-written text, while it incorrectly labeled human-written text as AI-written nine percent of the time. “Our classifier’s reliability typically improves as the length of the input text increases,” said OpenAI. Texts with less than 1,000 words are prone to be labelled incorrectly.

OpenAI also says that the tool should not be used as a “primary decision making tool,” and instead, should complement other ways of determining whether the piece of text is human-written or not. Further, OpenAI recommends using the classifier only for English text. “It performs significantly worse in other languages and it is unreliable on code.”

The company is making the classifier publicly available to collect feedback from users, while it continues to improve the tool. Try out the classifier here.

Here’s how Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series compares to the S22 line

At its recent Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung announced its latest S-series flagship devices, including the S23, S23+ and the S23 Ultra. The new devices are available now to pre-order in Canada.

If you’re looking to pre-order one of Samsung’s new smartphones, you might want to read on and see how the latest flagships compare to their 2022-released predecessors.

Display and Design

S22 vs S23

Last year’s Samsung S22 featured a 6.1-inch Flat Dynamic AMOLED display with a 1,080 x 2,400 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. This year, the base S23 flagship device is almost identical to its predecessor, with a 6.1-inch 1,080 x 2,340 pixel resolution display and a variable 120Hz refresh rate (48Hz to 120Hz).

The S23 comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 screen, while its predecessor features a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus display. The new glass, according to Samsung, offers more durability for long-term use, and contains an average of 22 percent pre-consumer recycled materials.

Both devices feature always-on displays and HDR10+ support. The S23 takes the brightness of the flagship to the next level. The screen can reach max 1,750 nits, while the S22 was limited to 1,300 nits.

Both devices are also IP68 dust and water-resistant too, which means they can be submerged up to 1.5m underwater for about 30 minutes.

When it comes to the dimensions, the smartphones are almost identical. The S22 is 70.6 x 146 x 7.6mm and weighs in at 167g, while the S23 is 70.9 x 146.3 x 7.6mm and weighs in at 168g.

S22 Ultra vs S23 Ultra

The S22 Ultra features a 120Hz (variable) Quad HD+ 6.8-inch display with a peak brightness of 1,750 nits, alongside an always-on display and HDR10+ support. The S23 Ultra sports a 6.8-inch, 1,440 x 3,080-pixel resolution display with a 120Hz refresh rate (1Hz to 120Hz).

The S23 Ultra also features an S-Pen slot, while the S22 Ultra doesn’t. It’s worth noting that the S22 Ultra is still compatible with the S-Pen, it just didn’t feature a slot to store/charge the stylus.

Further, the S23 Ultra comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 screen, while its predecessor featured a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus display. The S23 Ultra also features flatter edges, which results in a slightly larger display surface area than the S22 Ultra. Both devices feature 1,750 nits of peak brightness, with 1,200 nits for HDR and 1,200 nits for HBM.

Similar to the S23+, the S23 Ultra also measures slightly bigger than its predecessor. The S22 Ultra measured in at 77.9 x 163.3 x 8.9mm and weighed 228g. The S23 Ultra, on the other hand, measures 78.1 x 163.4 x 8.9mm, and weighs 234g.

Cameras

Samsung says that photography and videography with the Galaxy S23 series is all about offering the user complete creative control in various situations, no matter what the subject is, the location or the time of day.

The selfie cameras for all three models now offer a 12-megapixel sensor, which is an upgrade from the S22 and S22+’s 10-megapixel front camera but a downgrade from the 40-megapixel S22 Ultra selfie cam. Further, SuperHDR is now applied on the selfie camera with 60fps to capture a more dynamic range of colour, according to Samsung.

The company also revealed the new “Contour Cut” camera housing around the lenses for all S23 series models that replaces the camera bump for a cleaner, more linear design.

Last year’s S22 and S22+ featured a 50-megapixel (f/1.8, wide) + 10-megapixel (f/2.4, 3x zoom) + 12-megapixel (f/2.2, 120-degree FOV, ultrawide) on the back, while a 10-megapixel (f/2.2) graced the front. The rear cameras on the new base S23 flagship and S23+ are identical to their predecessor. Both new devices feature a 50-megapixel (f/1.8, wide) + 10-megapixel (f/2.4, 3x zoom) + 12-megapixel (f/2.2, 120-degree FOV, ultrawide) camera.

As mentioned above, the selfie camera on the S22 and S22+ has received an upgrade. The S22 and S22+ featured a 10-megapixel front camera, while the new S23 and S23+ sport a 12-megapixel front shooter with AI Object-aware engine, Dual Pixel Auto Focus, AI stereo depth map and more for solid nighttime photography.

S22 Ultra vs. S23 Ultra

The new S23 Ultra can reportedly take the best nighttime photos of any Galaxy phone yet. The device features what Samsung calls a new “Adaptive Pixel Sensor.” Through Pixel Binning, it combines data from 16 pixels into one large pixel, allowing for brighter and more detailed shots in low-light situations.

Similarly, night portraits on the S23 Ultra’s selfie camera also shoot stand-out photos with visible depth and enhanced bokeh.

For nighttime videos, the camera features an advanced AI solution to reduce noise and enhance sharpness, while a new ‘Astro Hyperlapse mode lets users take clips of the night sky and capture the movement of stars without sophisticated equipment.

The main sensor on the S23 Ultra is a 200-megapixel one, a significant upgrade from the S22 Ultra’s 108-megapixel sensor. It features enhanced autofocus to ensure your subjects are always the highlight of the photo. According to Samsung, “by using four adjacent pixels to detect differences from left to right and top to bottom, it allows the camera to focus faster and more accurately because it has more points of reference.”

The other shooters on the rear include a 12-megapixel (f/2.2) ultrawide sensor, a 10-megapixel (f/4.9) telephoto 10x lens and a 10-megapixel (f/2.4) dual pixel telephoto 3x lens.

The S22 Ultra, on the other hand, featured a 108-megapixel (f/1.8) main sensor, a 12-megapixel (f/2.2, 120-degree) ultrawide lens, a 10-megapixel (f/4.9, 10x zoom) lens, and a 10-megapixel (f/2.4, 3x zoom) sensor.

Further, while the S22 Ultra could record 8K videos, it was capped at 24fps (frames per second), while the S23 Ultra can now record 8K videos at 30fps with a wider 80-degree angle and a bigger pixel size for a more cinematic video feel.

OS, Internals and Memory

All three S22 series devices launched with last year’s Android 12 with One UI 4.1 pre-installed. The new S23 series, inevitably, come with Android 13 with One UI 5.1 pre-installed. The S23 series support 5G, LTE and Wi-Fi 6E, similar to their predecessors, and features fingerprint (in-display), accelerometer, gyro, proximity and compass sensors.

Last year’s S22 and S22+ were both only available in 8GB RAM variants, and the same is true for the new S23 and S23+. Similarly, the S23 Ultra is available in 8GB and 12GB RAM variants, just like its predecessor.

The S23 is available in 128GB and 256GB storage variants, like last year’s base flagship S22. The S23+ is available in 256 and 512GB storage models, while its predecessor was limited to 128GB and 256GB models. Similarly, the S23 Ultra’s base storage now starts at 256GB, while its predecessor was available with 128GB base storage.

The most significant upgrade the new devices have received is the inclusion of the ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy’ chipset. The new processor gives the S23 Ultra ray-tracing capabilities while gaming, and according to Samsung, it provides 40 percent faster performance for GPU and NPU, when compared to predecessors, and results in more efficient battery life. Further, the new chip reportedly doesn’t throttle as much as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset.

Samsung says the new chipset is the “fastest” and “most efficient” chip in a smartphone yet.

Battery

The S23 Ultra features an identical battery to its predecessor. Both Ultra devices feature a 5,000mAh battery. On the other hand, both the S23 and the S23+ feature bigger batteries than their predecessors. The S23 is powered by a 3,900mAh cell (3,700mAh on the S22), and the S23+ runs on a 4,700mAh cell (4,500mAh) on the S22+.

All three new devices offer Wireless PowerShare, and support Fast Charging 2.0. The S23 Ultra exclusively also supports Super Fast Charging 2.0

Colours and pricing

All three new models come in four colours, namely ‘Phantom Black,’ ‘Cream,’ ‘Green,’ and ‘Lavender.’ Galaxy S23 and S23+ also come in ‘Lime’ and ‘Graphite,’ which are exclusive colours available only on Samsung.com. Similarly, ‘Graphite,’ ‘Sky Blue,’ ‘Lime,’ and ‘Red’ are Samsung.com exclusive colours for the S23 Ultra.

Upon release, these were the prices for the S22 series:

  • Samsung Galaxy S22: 8GB + 256GB — $1,169.99

Here are the free games hitting PlayStation Plus Essential in February 2023

Every month, PlayStation offers a handful of games at no additional cost to its PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Normally, there are three games offered each month through PlayStation Plus Essential, but in February, PlayStation is actually giving out four. Read on to find out which ones. (PlayStation will announce January’s PS Plus Extra and Premium games in the coming days.)

To start, two games that released last year are joining the catalogue: the skater Olli Olli World and survival horror title Evil Dead: The Game, both for PS4/PS5. Also free on both consoles is the Destiny 2 expansion, Beyond Light, which is this month’s bonus title. Finally, action-adventure remaster Mafia: Definitive Edition is up for grabs on PS4.

All four titles will be available to download through PS Plus from Tuesday, February 7th until Monday, March 6th. Meanwhile, January’s free PS Plus Essential titles will remain available until February 6th.

PlayStation Plus Essential starts at $11.99 CAD/month, Extra begins at $17.99/month and Premium is priced at $21.99/month. PS Plus Essential perks, including the monthly free games, are included in Extra and Premium plans.

Additionally, PlayStation has confirmed that the PS Plus Collection — more than a dozen PS4 games that are free on PS5 to PS Plus subscribers — will no longer be offered starting May 9th. However, anyone who claims these titles before then will be able to continue playing them beyond May 9th as long as they remain subscribed to PS Plus.

Samsung, Qualcomm and Google team up to make ‘extended reality’ products

What is this? A crossover episode?

At its Unpacked flagship event earlier today, Samsung announced its new S23 series flagship devices, alongside the new Galaxy Book 3 series. What came as a surprise, though, was the fact that it’s partnering with Qualcomm and Google to develop new ‘extended reality’ products and experiences.

Samsung abbreviated extended reality as XR, and though it didn’t reveal much about the partnership and upcoming XR products, we did learn that Google is working on a new and special version of Android, specifically for AR/VR devices, with Qualcomm assisting in making chips for said products.

In an interview given to The Washington Post, TM Roh, the president and head of Samsung’s mobile experience business, said, “Many different companies … have been making these announcements about different realities…So we have also been making similar preparations, no less than any others.” Roh’s statement is clearly aimed at Meta, which is at the forefront of the AR/VR movement, and Apple, which is reported to release its AR/VR headset sometime in 2023.

Roh did not share any information about a specific AR/VR product, and we don’t know if one is already in production. “We’re getting there, but we’re not too far away,” he said. “For the chipset, it is going to be a strategic collaboration with Qualcomm. The hardware will be us,” Roh said.

Samsung last dabbled with AR/VR technology back in 2017, with the Gear VR headset, which it developed in partnership with Oculus. Since then, Samsung has shied away from developing AR/VR technology. The partnership with Qualcomm and Google makes sense, and now, since there is more demand for virtual and augmented reality gadgets, it’ll be interesting to see what the trio of companies can whip up.
