Here’s where HBO’s The Last of Us was filmed in Alberta

HBO’s The Last of Us has been getting rave reviews for being not only one of the few quality live-action video game adaptations, but a genuinely good series in its own right. It’s even won over some cynics. By all accounts, the PlayStation game adaptation is looking to be the next tentpole HBO series alongside the likes of House of the DragonThe White Lotus and Succession.

Best of all? It was filmed entirely in Canada. From July 2021 to June 2022, the show was shot across none other than Alberta, a nice change of pace from the many Toronto and Vancouver productions. What’s more, it has a Game of Thrones-level budget of at least $100 million USD (about $133.8 million CAD), which is believed to be the biggest TV production in Canadian history.

In many ways, then, the series serves as a showcase for the province as a whole — not just its vistas, but its talented crew members and actors. On top of that, the game has a sprawling story about a smuggler named Joel (Pedro Pascal) who must escort scrappy teen Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a zombie-infested U.S., so we get to see a variety of locations and climates.

With that in mind, here are some of the Alberta filming sites to keep an eye out for in The Last of Us:

Calgary

A post shared by Gabriel Luna (@iamgabrielluna)

Without getting into spoilers, the first episode of the series partially takes place years before the collapse of humanity, so we get to see a lot of normal residential areas. These scenes, which include Pascal, Nico Parker (Joel’s daughter, Sarah) and Gabriel Luna (Joel’s brother, Tommy), were filmed in Calgary.

Many of the post-pandemic scenes in the show, particularly those involving highways overrun by foliage, were also shot around Calgary. Northland Village Mall, in particular, was given the post-apocalyptic treatment for the show, presumably to adapt flashback scenes from The Last of Us: Left Behind (a 2014 expansion to the original game) featuring Ellie.

Additionally, the city’s Mount Royal University and SAIT — expected to stand in for key scenes set at a Colorado school — make appearances.

Canmore

The little Albertan town played host to The Last of Us in a big way. As co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin told us in an interview, Canmore was chosen for being a “dead ringer” for Jackson, Wyoming, a key setting involving Joel, Ellie and Tommy.

Separately, Pascal and Ramsey also both told us how Canmore was their favourite location out of the whole shoot, with the former saying “every inch of Canmore was just this magical little town… with really great fudge.” (Alas, we didn’t have time for a follow-up question, so it’s currently unclear where, exactly, Pascal was getting his fudge.)

It remains to be seen which episode(s) will feature Canmore, but expect to see the “magical little town” pop up a bit later in the series.

Edmonton

Of course, the provincial capital also features in the show for a number of Boston locations, including the Alberta Legislature Building standing in for the city’s Capitol. You’ll first see Edmonton pretty quickly in the show — the first two episodes, specifically, in scenes with Pascal, Ramsey and Anna Torv (Joel’s friend Tess).

Fort Macleod

With a population of around 3,000, Fort Macleod is perfect for “small-town” scenes. In the case of The Last of Us, one of the key moments from the Texas-set prologue was shot here.

High River

Ramsey name-dropped High River to us, which was used to adapt a pivotal scene from the original game’s prologue. (If you know, you know.)

Waterton Lakes National Park

In our interview, Ramsey shouted out this snowy location, which was home to the production for a few days as a stand-in for Colorado.

Of course, this only touches on some of the many Alberta locations featured in The Last of Us, given that it was a major year-long production. Looking at even a few of these, though, makes it clear how much of a role the province played in bringing a beloved video game to life. In fact, Pascal even told us that he felt it was “essential” there, praising the crew and other locals.

“I feel like being there was essential to the experience — that we couldn’t have done it anywhere else,” said Pascal. “Physically, for one, but also for our crew and the warmth and the dedication and everybody really in it together and caring as much. There wasn’t a fraction of apathy in the entire experience, and honestly, it felt Canadian to me.”

The Last of Us will begin streaming exclusively on Crave in Canada on January 15th.

For more on The Last of Us, check out our review of the series and interview with several of the cast and crew, including Pascal, Ramsey, Mazin and co-creator Neil Druckman. We also have a review of The Last of Us Part I, last year’s remake of the original The Last of Us game.

Industry and technology committee will conduct a second review on Rogers-Shaw merger: report

The industry and technology committee in the House of Commons is reportedly getting set to hold a second public hearing into Rogers’ merger with Shaw.

The committee had already examined the matter and published a report in March 2022 recommending the merger not be approved.

Sources told The Globe and Mail that the second public hearing would involve Vidéotron’s takeover of Freedom Mobile, an aspect that didn’t exist when the committee made its initial recommendations. The parties signed a definitive agreement in August for $2.85 billion.

As the publication notes, the parties don’t need the committee’s approval for the merger to move forward. However, it could influence Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne, whose approval is required. Champagne has reserved his response while legal proceedings between the Competition Bureau and Rogers and Shaw continue. The Minister has previously said he’ll support Vidéotron’s acquisition of Freedom if the company keeps its wireless licenses for 10 years and lowers wireless bills.

The Globe further reports the committee hearing will examine how Vidéotron was selected to acquire Freedom Mobile. The companies reportedly received several other offers for the carrier, including a $3.75-billion offer from Globalive Capital Inc.

Looks like there’s a new Chromecast with Google TV on the way

It looks like a new Chromecast with Google TV might be on its way.

In the latest preview update to the Google Home app, spotted by 9to5GoogleGoogle is preparing a new Google TV device that it internally refers to as ‘YTC.’ The code goes on further to specify that this is a Chromecast with Google TV, which makes sense considering the last one had the internal coding ‘YTV.’

It’s unclear exactly what this Chromecast with Google is all about, though it’s possible it will be a higher-end device since the last dongle had lower specs. 9to5 says that there should also be an upgrade to the processor as well as since Android TV has changed its hardware requirements recently.

It’s unclear when Google could introduce a new Chromecast with Google TV, but I’d be looking out for a release in and around Google I/O.

Tesla cuts prices, Model 3 RWD now eligible for $5,000 federal iZEV rebate

Tesla has made a bold move by announcing a global price cut of up to 20 percent on some of its electric vehicles after the automotive company missed Wall Street delivery estimates for 2022 and follows warnings from CEO Elon Musk that the prospect of recession and higher interest rates could eat into company profits, as reported by Reuters.

The latest price cuts apply in Canada, alongside the U.S., Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Due to the price cuts, the Tesla Model 3 RWD now qualifies for the $5,000 CAD federal iZEV rebate, considering that the vehicle’s price has dropped below the $55,000 CAD limit. Check out the updated Canadian pricing for Tesla vehicles, as shared by TeslaNorth, below:

Model 3

  • RWD: $54,990 (was $61,980; $6,990 drop, -11.3 percent)
  • Performance: $72,990 (was $83,990; $11,000 drop, -13.1 percent)

Model Y

  • Long Range: $69,990 (was $86,990; $17,000 drop, -19.5 percent)
  • Performance: $72,990 (was $83,990; $11,000 drop, -13.1 percent)

Model S

  • Long Range: $122,990 (was $136,990; $14,000 drop, -10.2 percent)
  • Plaid: $149,990 (was $178,590; $28,600 drop, -16 percent)

Model X

  • Long Range: $142,990 (was $157,990; $15,000 drop, -9.5 percent)
  • Plaid: $156,990 (was $185,590; $28,600 drop, -15.4 percent)

Further, the Model 3 and Model Y Midnight Silver Metallic colourway is no longer free. It will now cost you $1,300 CAD extra to secure a vehicle in said colour. Additionally, the cost of the 7-seat option for Model Y has risen by $1,300 and is now priced at $5,300, up from its previous price of $4,000.

It’s worth noting that this comes less than a year after Tesla raised the cost of its vehicles in Canada twice in two months. Read more about it here.

According to a statement given to Reuters by a Tesla Germany spokesperson, “At the end of a turbulent year with interruptions to the supply chain, we have achieved a partial normalization of cost inflation, which gives us the confidence to pass this relief onto our customers.”

It’s also worth noting that despite not beating Wall Street estimates of 431,117 deliveries in Q4 2022, the company did set a record with over 405,000 vehicle deliveries. It is likely that the new price cuts have been put in place to increase demand for the company’s EVs and start 2023 strong.

Several third-party Twitter clients not working amid API issues

Several third-party Twitter clients are experiencing issues after Twitter’s third-party API went dark. It remains unclear what’s going on as so far, neither Twitter nor new owner and CEO Elon Musk have said anything about the issues.

The issues started around 10:30pm ET on January 12th and continued into the morning of January 13th.

Moreover, the problems appear to affect different apps in different ways. Some apps, like Tweetbot, report that all API requests from the app fail. Other developers report their apps show up as ‘suspended’ in Twitter’s developer portal. And still, other apps appear to be unaffected — Android Police notes relatively new client Harpy seems to be working, and in my testing, desktop client Tweeten seems to be working just fine (although it’s based on TweetDeck, which could explain why it still works).

For those unfamiliar with Twitter’s third-party API, it enables third-party clients (apps not made by Twitter itself) to access the platform. These clients were quite popular in the early days of Twitter since they often had more (or better) features than Twitter’s own mobile app. However, over the years, Twitter has changed and restricted aspects of the API, and there has been something of a fall-off in terms of using third-party clients.

While there are still plenty of people using third-party clients, for many, the additional hassle of third-party clients often wasn’t worth it. From my experience, third-party Twitter clients were some of my favourite apps, but it eventually became too difficult to use them effectively. Aside from Tweeten, which I mentioned above, I basically use the first-party Twitter app now.

Hopefully, the issues currently impacting third-party Twitter clients result from a change or update to the API and not because, as some have speculated, Twitter wants to kill third-party clients entirely. However, it remains to be seen how this all plays out.

Alleged Galaxy S23 series marketing pics show off all three phones

Recently, we saw leaks of the Samsung Galaxy S23 base version, but now we’re seeing alleged marketing images of the S23+ and S23 Ultra, shared by Evan Blass.

All three devices look similar to the previous models, except now the S23 and S23+ lack their camera bumps.

The S23 Ultra still has its Note-like rectangular shape with an S Pen and slot, although we can’t see the slot in the device.

Similar to the other models, the S23 Ultra comes in ‘Phantom Black,’ ‘Botanic Green,’ ‘Mystic Lilac,’ and ‘Cotton Flower (white).’ However, it’s strange that they are all coming out in the same colour variant.

According to the previous leaks, the phone will sport a QHD+ display with a 3088 x 1440-pixel resolution, 8GB/12GB of RAM, 256GB/512GB/1TB of storage, four rear cameras with 200-megapixel primary, 12-megapixel ultrawide, 10-megapixel 3x telephoto and a 10-megapixel telephoto with 10x optical zoom.

This leak also says that Samsung’s flagship will feature Bluetooth, USB-C, a gyrosensor, a proximity sensor, a light sensor, an under-display fingerprint reader, face recognition and a 4,855mAh battery, which will be marketed as a 5,000mAh battery.

While the headline says these images are “alleged,” given the source is Evan Blass, it’s likely correct. However, only time will tell; Samsung will officially unveil the S23 Ultra, S23+ and S23 on February 1st.

Cogeco reports revenue increase in Q1 2023 financial report

Cogeco increased its revenue by six percent in the first quarter of 2023, Q1 financial results show.

The company, which operates both in Canada and the United States, made $762 million this quarter. Revenue on the Canadian telecom side increased by 4.8 percent, mainly due to its high-speed internet service.

“Cogeco Connexion, our Canadian telecommunications business unit, performed as expected,” Philippe Jetté, Cogeco Communication’s president and CEO, said.

“We continued to connect new homes to our network as part of the fibre-to-the-home network expansions in Québec, and we are starting to see the positive effects.”

However, the company says it expects revenue growth to reduce this year. A smaller customer base in the U.S., increasing competition and, to a lesser extent, economic conditions are expected to play a role.
