Today is the last day to get the $45/50GB promo plan

Looks like November 29th will be the last day to get the $45/mo 50GB deal on offer at Fido, Koodo, and Virgin Plus.

The Big Three flanker brands added notices to their websites that list November 29th as the end date for the $45/mo plan, but the plans are still available online.

As a quick reminder, the plan on offer typically costs $65/mo but has a $20/mo bill credit for 24 months. Along with the 50GB of data, the plans come with unlimited Canada-wide minutes and messaging, as well as some other perks and features depending on the carrier. Moreover, Fido and Virgin both cap data speed at 150Mbps while Koodo caps it at 100Mbps, but Koodo customers can pick a ‘Speed Boost’ perk that bumps it up to 200Mbps.

Fido also followed Virgin in adding a one-day-only $50 bill credit offer. Customers who sign up with Fido on November 29th get a $50 bill credit and Fido will waive the $50 connection fee.

Apple reveals 2022 App Store Award winners, including Inscryption and MacFamilyTree

Apple has doled out the awards for this year’s App Store Awards.

Across a slew of categories, the tech giant is recognizing global developers and partners for recently launched apps and games. Those featuring ongoing support for their software are also in the spotlight.

This year, a multitude of productivity apps are receiving awards, and Apple is recognizing an assortment of games as well. Across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, the Cupertino, California-based company is awarding the development efforts of studios on the App Store.

“It’s an honour to be able to recognize the achievements of this year’s App Store Award winners, who reimagined our experiences with apps throughout 2022 with fresh, thoughtful, and genuine perspectives,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement. “From self-taught solo creators to international teams spanning the globe, these developers are making a meaningful impact that represents the ways in which apps and games continue to drive culture, leaving a seismic influence on our communities and lives.”

Of the included awards, there were a few noteworthy standouts.

The first is MacFamilyTree 10. Introduced in 1998, MacFamilyTree has been spearheading genealogy for macOS for over 20 years. Developed by Synium Software GmbH, MacFamilyTree 10 is being recognized as ‘Mac App of the Year.’ This year, Synium Software GmbH launched version 10.1, which adds a variety of quality-of-life changes. Additionally, several user interface improvements and redesigns are available.

MacFamilyTree 10 offers users the ability to discover family history through 3D visuals and diagrams. Users can trace their backgrounds and histories by generation. Synium Software GmbH continues to support macOS as the main platform with an intuitive, yet deep navigation system.

The new version of the software introduces customizable features making it easier to enter data, navigate, and view. Additionally, Synium Software GmbH redesigned the Virtual Tree to enable a cleaner view when looking at all their connections. Plus, MacFamilyTree 10 is now available in 16 global languages.

MacFamilyTree 10 continues to lead genealogy which is no longer a niche service. Due to its accessibility across macOS and now iOS, more users can learn interesting tidbits about their families and history.

From a gaming perspective, there is Inscryption. Developed by Vancouver’s Daniel Mullins Games and published by Devolver Digital, Inscryption won ‘Mac Game of the Year.’ The game was first released on PC on October 19th, 2021. However, Inscryption was later ported to Mac on June 22nd, 2022. Landing within a new ecosystem, Inscryption found a new audience.

For the uninitiated, Inscryption is a rogue-like card battler. Inspired by Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh!, players must battle opponents on a 3×4 grid. Winning further unlocks a deeper story set in a dark and eerie cabin. As the player ventures further into the game, it begins incorporating found-footage elements drawn from The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield.

Upon its initial launch, Inscryption gained a ton of acclaim. Daniel Mullins Games was awarded the ‘Game of the Year’ accolade at the Game Developers Choice Awards. Additionally, Inscryption won awards at the Seumas McNally Grand Prize and the Independent Games Festival. Its gameplay and controls are ripe for the macOS ecosystem, making it a great addition to the Mac catalogue.

Cultural Impact

On top of recognizing apps and games available on the App Store, Apple is also highlighting a selection of projects that have made a cultural impact. The App Store editorial team has awarded five winners that have influenced the lives of users.

Included is a very Canadian-centric game, developed by ARTE Experience in collaboration with The Pixel Hunt and Iko. Inua – A Story in Ice and Time centres on Inuit culture and northern Canada. It’s adapted from an original story created by Natalie Frassoni and Frédéric Bouvier 20 years ago. However, the story was originally intended to be made into a movie. It was then pitched as a game to the team in 2015. For six years, Inua was in pre-production before core development began.

It centres on the disappearance of two English ships that went missing in the mid-1800s. Spanning three eras, Inua tackles the results of these lost ships as well as Inuit culture. The core development team is based out of France. However, while working entirely remotely, Inua was developed while consulting Inuit collaborators in Canada. This helped the teams ensure accuracy in the depiction of Inuit traditions and folklore. Additionally, the team brought on Canadian Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq.

The entire game plays out as a point-and-click adventure. Due to its streamlined gameplay, it’s ripe to exist as a “premium” game on the App Store. Since its launch, Inua has amassed a small, yet very positive audience.

Apple is reportedly interested in acquiring broadcast rights to Dutch soccer league Eredivisie

Apple seems to be going all-in with Soccer.

The Cupertino-based company announced a formal partnership with the MLS that gives Apple streaming rights to MLS games until 2032 in more than 100 countries, including Canada and the United States.

Then, last week, a report surfaced online that claimed Apple is an interested buyer of the prestigious U.K. football club Manchester United, which is on market for reportedly £5.8 billion (roughly $9.38 billion CAD).

Now Apple is considering acquiring the rights to the Dutch soccer league Eredivisie. The information was first reported on by iCreate, quoting “the usually well-informed sports marketer Chris Woerts,” as the source.

The report states that “other American giants,” including Netflix and Amazon, are also interested in acquiring rights to the league, which currently is in the hands of ESPN.

The ESPN deal lasts until 2024, so if Apple was to purchase the rights to stream the Eredivisie league, it wouldn’t be before 2025. It will also reportedly cost Apple, or whoever ultimately gets their hands on the streaming rights, “at least 150 to 200 million euros per year” (roughly $200 million CAD to $280 million CAD).

Whether or not Apple ends up acquiring rights to broadcast the Eredivisie league, the pattern is clear as day, and Apple is making it evident that it wants sports streaming to be its next big thing.

While the Eredivisie league is a topic for the future, Apple’s MLS Season Pass is set to launch on February 1st, 2023. Read more about it here.

MagSafe charging is more efficient on the iPhone 14 Pro Max

Apple’s MagSafe made a comeback in 2020 with the iPhone 12. MagSafe’s functionality, which allows a wide range of accessories to magnetically quick-attach to the back of iPhone 12 and later released devices, is primarily used for charging.

While Apple didn’t mention if it had made any improvements to MagSafe compatibility when it released the iPhone 13 series and the iPhone 14 series, YouTube channel ChargerLAB has released a comparison video showcasing MagSafe charging on an iPhone 13 Pro Max and an iPhone 14 Pro Max.

While not much has changed in the base technology, the experiment found that the newer iPhones can use the MagSafe charger more efficiently than older MagSafe-compatible iPhones. Folks at ChargerLAB used the MagSafe chargers from Apple running ‘firmware 247.0.0.0,’ while both iPhones were running iOS 16.

The difference between the charging performance of both devices was relatively small. The iPhone 14 Pro Max took two hours and 18 minutes to reach 100 percent battery, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max took two hours and 26 minutes.

Since there is no difference in battery capacity between the two devices, ChargerLAB deciphered that the new thermal cooling system in the iPhone 14 Pro Max “has played a critical role in improving the overall stability and speed of MagSafe charging.”

Watch the ChargerLAB video below:

The MagSafe charger costs $55 at the Apple Store, while MagSafe Battery Pack and MagSafe Duo Charger cost $119 and $169, respectively.
