Elden Ring is $30 off in stores for Black Friday

One of the best games of the year, Elden Ring, is now available for $30 off.

FromSoftware’s epic role-playing game has a 96 on Metacritic and has received praise from the gaming community as a whole. It’s also up for Game of the Year at The Game Awards.

Elden Ring came out in January, and this top-rated game is now on sale.  Unfortunately, if you’re like me with a digital-only console, you won’t be able to take advantage of this sale. The game isn’t on sale in either the PlayStation or Xbox stores, and it’s not discounted on Steam either.

You can grab it for $49.99 instead of its regular price of $79.99. Below are all of the retailers where Elden Ring is on sale:

Telus adds $75/100GB Black Friday plan

Telus followed Rogers in offering a $75/mo 100GB plan, although it’s not immediately obvious that the Vancouver-based national telecom did so.

Telus updated its $85/mo 50GB plan to have 100GB of data. However, the plan also has access to a $10/mo bill credit that would lower the monthly price to $75 for 24 months. Additionally, Telus is offering to waive the $50 connection fee and add a $50 bill credit, totalling $340 in savings over two years.

Like Rogers, Telus offers 100GB of data at up to 250Mbps speeds and is capped at 512Kbps beyond the 100GB limit. The plan also includes unlimited nationwide talk and text.

You can check out the Telus plan here or other Telus Black Friday deals here. Moreover, the best carrier deals so far can be found here.

Canadian carriers lock their doors, does it change the experience?

Over my last few weeks of deal hunting, I’ve been popping into a ton of carrier stores and getting a feel for what it’s like to shop now that most carriers have locked their doors to help prevent fraud.

Since September 2022, Rogers and Bell have locked down their stores in Toronto to help prevent fraud, but I’ve found that it’s not really a great shopping experience. Most of the stores I visited were around the Toronto Eaton Centre and the Queen West areas, but I also had to travel much further out of the downtown core to test a Telus store since most of its street-front stores were closed.

While having a locked door doesn’t seem like much of a hassle, it makes the shopping experience a bit more involved and doesn’t really leave much room for browsing. In the flagship Rogers store at Yonge-Dundas Square, the policy seems to be that only Rogers employees can open the door. So no matter how much eye contact you make with the security guard standing by the door, they won’t let you in. Once you’re in, a sales rep will immediately help you if one is free, which is nice, but if they’re all busy you’ll be asked to sit and wait. This does give you time to get up and browse, but it also means that you might lose your spot in line to talk to a sales team member.

I was also the only one browsing, likely since everyone else is told to take a seat. I’ll also mention that when I was in this store during peak hours, it had three security guards.

Most of the other stores had the same experience, but less security. Since they weren’t very busy I also started working with a sales associate right away. The only outlier was the Koodo/Telus store in Liberty Village. The doors weren’t locked there, so I was able to just waltz right in. However, it’s worth noting that the Rogers/Fido around the corner was locked.

Some stores do have small signs on the doors to at least alert customers that the store is locked and why, but others, like the Bell Store on Yonge Street, didn’t. You just pulled on the door, peered in and hoped the salesperson noticed you or then you’d have to start knocking.

Locked or not, shopping in a carrier store isn’t usually a great experience. They’re mostly dull and often outdated. Some are better than others, but even then, you have to deal with a salesperson who may or may not actually know what they’re talking about.

Governments of Canada and B.C funding high-speed internet projects for 1,100 households

The federal government is partnering with the Province of British Columbia to bring high-speed internet access to more than 5,000 rural households.

CityWest is working on seven projects worth $5.2 million. The projects will bring high-speed internet access to more than 1,100 homes on and around Vancouver Island.

$19.5 million in funding will benefit 4,000 households in Mount Waddington, North Coast, Bulkley-Nechako, qathet, Columbia-Shuswap, and Cowichan Valley. Specific project details will be shared at a later date.

The funding for these projects is part of an announcement the two governments made in March 2022 to invest $380 million to connect rural residents with high-speed internet access.

“We all know that internet is no longer a luxury in this day and age — it’s a necessity,” Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development, said.

“Access to fast, reliable internet helps communities by levelling the playing field so they can access essential services like health care and education, participate in the digital economy, or simply connect with loved ones.”

The federal government has similar partnerships with other provinces, including Ontario, under Canada’s Connectivity Strategy. The strategy’s goal is to connect 98 percent of the population with high-speed internet access by 2026.

Musk aims to relaunch Blue on December 2 with manual verification

Twitter owner Elon Musk plans to “tentatively” relaunch Twitter Blue on December 2nd with new, colour-coded checkmarks. Previously, Musk planned to relaunch Blue on November 29th but later said Twitter would hold off until it could deal with the impersonation issue.

In a tweet, Musk said that companies would get gold checkmarks, governments would get grey checkmarks, and individuals would get blue checkmarks, “celebrity or not.” Moreover, Musk said that “all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before [the] check activates,” a move he described as “painful, but necessary.”

In another tweet, Musk said, “All verified individual humans will have [the] same blue check, as [the] boundary of what constitutes “notable” is otherwise too subjective.” Moreover, he said individuals can get a secondary logo showing they belong to an organization if verified by that institution. Musk promised a longer explanation would come next week.

These changes come after Musk rolled out a new version of the Twitter Blue subscription that gave subscribers a blue checkmark that matched the verified badge previously given to notable accounts. The new subscription costs $9.99/mo in Canada. However, Musk suspended the new Blue within days after Twitter was flooded with paid ‘verified’ accounts that impersonated brands, celebrities, and politicians. Blue caused chaos and even led to significant stock drops for some companies.

Moreover, Twitter employees warned Musk and leadership of the potential problems — including impersonation risks — ahead of the Blue launch. Musk ignored them.

While the changes to Blue and Musk’s promise to actually verify Twitter users seem promising, it remains to be seen how it plays out on December 2nd (or whenever the changes go live). Moreover, questions remain about how Musk plans to manually verify all the users who sign up, given he decimated Twitter’s staff and contract workers and continued firing people even after saying he would start hiring new staff.

Moreover, once customers go over the 100GB cap, they can keep using data at a throttled speed of up to 512Kbps.

The plan is only available for new activations and hardware upgrades.
