Ian Scott says Canada needs more wireless competition

In what’s likely his last address as Chair of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), Ian Scott told the Canadian Telecom Summit (CTS) there isn’t enough competition in Canada’s wireless market to benefit Canadians.

Scott points to the CRTC’s stance on mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) as evidence of steps the CRTC has taken to address the issue.

On October 19th, the CRTC released the terms and conditions that will govern the relationship between regional providers and incumbents.

“With those parameters set, we’re looking to the industry to take the next step — for large providers to negotiate in good faith with the smaller regional counterparts,” Scott said.

Scott hopes parties can work together to bring Canadians more options. However, as past examples have shown, problems often arise when it comes to telecom companies working together.

Scott also addressed the price and quality of internet services available to Canadians. He said the commission needs to fix its high-speed access (HSA) framework, which provides wholesale service rates.

“We know our framework is not producing the expected results and that we need to fix it. Our objective is therefore clear,” Scott said at CTS.

He did not mention the CRTC’s reversal of a 2019 decision that found internet rates were too high and needed to be lowered. The CRTC reversed the decision in May 2021, citing an error.

Scott’s time as chair of the CRTC started four years ago when he was first elected. His original term was supposed to end in September but was extended by four months as the government continued to look for his replacement. It’s unclear if the role has been filled and if Scotts’ speech at CTS was, in fact, his last as chair of the CRTC.

OnePlus could be working on a giant tablet

OnePlus has steered clear of the tablet market for the past ten years or so, but it looks like the company may finally fall for the forbidden fruit.

According to a forum post on OnePlus’s website, the rumours started when OnePlus trademarked OnePlus Pad in Europe and India in 2021. Since then, it’s been silent, but a new leak from Max Jambor has shed light on the potential project.

The tweet suggests that OnePlus might release the tablet in 2023, which would be interesting since Google also has strong tablet ambitions for next year.

Other leaks suggest the tablet will run Android 12L and that it will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 and 6GB of RAM. Beyond that, the large 12.4-inch screen will be an OLED panel. It’s expected to offer 45-watt fast charging and feature a battery size of around 10,000mAh.

Looking at these rumours from a Canadian perspective, I’m not expecting the tablet to launch here. OnePlus usually keeps its more interesting devices, like the OnePlus TV to markets where it’s more popular. I’d expect this tablet to be released in the same way.

That said, the OnePlus Watch did make its way to North America, so the tablet could follow suit, especially as the software/hardware ecosystem game heats up leading into the 2020s.

Nintendo’s Switch eShop Black Friday game deals don’t totally suck

In a surprise move, several notable Switch games are heavily discounted as part of Nintendo’s eShop store sale.

If you follow the world of gaming discounts, you’ll know that the Japanese gaming giant rarely slashes the cost of its titles because, well, it doesn’t have to. People will still pay full price for ancient titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe close to eight years after its release (remember, Deluxe is a remake of Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U).

Nintendo’s latest deal offering includes Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Fire Emblem Three Houses and more. Of course, Nintendo’s own titles are only discounted by $24, as usual. Several big-name third-party games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection and Cult of the Lamb are also on sale.

Below are the best deals that caught my eye:

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury: was $79.99, now $55.99

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD: was $79.99, now $55.99

Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe: was $79.99, now $55.99

Fire Emblem: Three Houses: was $79.99, now $55.99

Mario Tennis Aces: was $79.99, now $55.99

Luigi’s Mansion 3: was $79.99, now $55.99

No No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom: was $79.99, now $26.39

Bravely Default II: was $79.99, now $55.99

Cult of the Lamb: was $27.99, now $22.39

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition: was $79.99, now $39.99

Wireless Wave Black Friday deals include up to $350 in store credit with select phones

Wireless Wave dropped its Black Friday deals for smartphones and plans. Like other retailers, Wireless Wave is offering a discounted plan at $45/mo for 20GB of data. It’s a little better than online offers from Fido, Virgin and Koodo, but not quite as good as the rumoured in-store offers like $40/20GB and even $30/20GB at some locations.

As for smartphone deals, the biggest benefit of Wireless Wave is the ample in-store credit you get when buying a phone through them. Wireless Wave only offers Bell, Rogers and their subsidiaries — the prices below generally reflect what those carriers offer.

  • iPhone 13 — $0 down, $30.84/mo financing and get up to $300 to spend in-store
  • iPhone 12 — $0 down, $25/mo financing and get up to $300 to spend in-store
  • iPhone 11 — $0 down, $15/mo financing and get up to $200 to spend in-store
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 — $0 down, $25.84/mo and get up to $350 to spend in-store
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 FE — $0 down, $14.58/mo and get up to $300 to spend in-store
  • Google Pixel 6a — $0 down, $1/mo financing and get up to $250 to spend in-store

Pixel 7 available for $9/mo at several Canadian carriers

Google’s Pixel 7 might be one of the big winners of Black Friday 2022. The phone is on sale at Google but is also deeply discounted at several carriers, making it a steal.

Koodo, Virgin Plus, and Fido all have the Pixel 7 on sale for $9/mo (well, Fido is $9.50/mo) on a two-year term. That works out to $216 total for the phone (or $228 with Fido) over 24 months. Moreover, the phone costs $0 upfront, which means, in total, you’re paying just $216 for a phone that retails for $799. Even Google’s sale isn’t this good, with the phone currently available for $649.

Koodo previously charged a $33/mo Tab fee for the Pixel 7, while Virgin and Fido charged $39/mo device financing for the phone.

The Big Three carriers also have discounts on the Pixel 7, but arguably the flanker brands are better offers since they have cheaper plans to boot. The exception is if you want to borrow a Pixel 7 for two years at virtually no cost, which the Big Three all currently let you do:

  • Telus Pixel 7 – $0 down, $9.50/mo financing (or $0/mo with Bring-It-Back)
  • Bell Pixel 7 – $0 down, $9.50/mo financing (or $1/mo with Device Return Option)
  • Rogers Pixel 7 – $0 down, $9.50/mo financing (or $0/mo with Upfront Edge)

Overall, these are some pretty solid deals on Pixel 7 pricing. Coupled with the decent plans (like $55/20GB) available from Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus, it seems like now is a great time to get a Pixel 7.

You can learn more about the Pixel 7 here, or check out other carrier deals here.

Tesla museum exhibit showcases Apple Music app

A museum exhibit in Los Angeles is currently showcasing several prototype Tesla vehicles like the Roadster and Cybertruck. However, one small feature that originally went noticed is that these cars are running pre-production software that has an Apple Music app.

Tesla has been insistent on integrating apps into its system instead of relying on Android Auto or CarPlay like most other major brands. This is both good and bad, but for music fans, it results in a rather limited selection of high-quality streaming apps.

However, in 2019 Spotify was finally added, and Tidal hit the platform in 2021. Now, it appears that Apple Music might be the next music streaming service to land on Tesla.

There’s no concrete release date for this feature, but the company generally releases a larger holiday feature update, and it may be part of that, according to a tweet from Teslascope.

This update has been a long time coming since Apple Music is already available to users with certain models of Mercedes and Porsche cars. One notable exception is that Apple has split podcasts out of the Apple Music app, so it’s unlikely that this app will play podcasts.

You can read more about the Tesla exhibit on the Peterson Museum’s website.
