Niantic and Qualcomm show off reference design AR glasses

At the 2022 Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm and Niantic have announced their partnership with one another for an immersive glasses experience.

While the companies haven’t mentioned anything regarding a release date for a consumer product, Niantic has showed off reference designs for AR glasses.

The most recent design looks sleek, and lightweight, which is due to the recently announced Snapdragon AR2 platform. The new platform, which Qualcomm says it built from the ground up, will reportedly allow hardware makers to release thinner AR glasses.

And Niantic announced that in 2023 the LightShip visual positioning system will work with the Snapdragon Spaces XR developer platform with the hope to help developers create future experiences. This means that developers using the Snapdragon Spaces XR developer platform can easily add the Lightship system to their games or experiences.

Following this explanation, Niantic gave us a glimpse of what this experience could look like.

Phone link to soon allow AirPlay-like audio streaming with select Android smartphones

Similar to how iPhone users can use AirPlay to stream audio from their iPhone to a Mac device, Android users will soon be able to stream audio from their smartphone to a Windows 11 PC via Phone Link.

The new feature, which hasn’t been referenced yet by Microsoft, was showcased by blogger @ALumia_Italia, and is called ‘Stream audio to your PC,’ according to XDADevelopers.

“You spoke and we listened! Now you can hear and see things shared from your Phone on your PC. Change the device you’d like to stream audio from in Phone Link settings,” reads the app.

According to @ALumia_Italia’s Twitter thread, the feature requires a Samsung phone on Android 13 to function, and is currently only available on Windows’ Insider Beta Channel. The screenshot also shows an ‘Apps’ section, which only pops up when select Samsung and Surface devices are connected to Phone Link, further implying that the feature is likely not available on all Android devices.

In addition to audio streaming, @ALumia_Italia also mentioned that a new ‘Continuity Browser History’ feature is coming for the Phone Hub that will allow users to share browsing history between their Android and Windows devices. ‘Continuity Browser History’ is also a Samsung-exclusive feature and requires you to be using the Samsung Browser.

Device repair technicians snoop on your personal data, remove their tracks: report

Researchers from the University of Guelph have found electric repair technicians often snoop through customers’ data.

Computer scientists Jason Ceci, Jonah Stegman, and Hassan Khan tested the privacy policies of 18 repair shops in North America in their research paper “No Privacy in the Electronics Repair Industry.”

The researchers didn’t identify the locations, which include service providers and device manufacturers, under the university’s ethical requirements.

The research took place in four parts.

Part one focused on the 18 providers, many of which the researchers found lacked privacy policies that protect personal data from being viewed by technicians.

In part two, the researchers dropped devices for repair at 16 providers and examined what technicians did. They found technicians viewed personal data, including private photos and financial information, copied data off the device, and removed their tracks.

Parts three and four focused on collecting customer experience data and determining possible solutions to reduce privacy violations.

To protect data, the authors argue the solution requires work from three parties: device manufacturers, service providers, and regulatory parties.
Device manufacturers can provide the ability to create guest accounts, which will limit the device’s access when being repaired. For example, Samsungs introduced “repair mode,” which protects data on the devices.

Service providers need to develop policies that protect customers’ data from technicians. Regulatory bodies also need to play a role in keeping such information safe.

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon AR2, S5 and S3 Gen 2 platforms

At Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, the company unveiled not only Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, but also Snapdragon AR2, a new mobile computing platform and updated S5 and S3 Gen 2 sound platforms.

Augmented Reality

Starting with AR2 Gen 1 Platform, the company designed the chip for upcoming XR (mixed reality) glasses. The new platform, which Qualcomm says it built from the ground up, will reportedly allow hardware makers to release thinner AR glasses.

The smart glasses’ main processor occupies a 40 percent smaller PCB area on-glass and delivers 2.5x better AI performance. It also consumes 50 percent less power, allowing the AR glasses to use less than 1W of power. Qualcomm says that this will enable rich AR experiences on glasses that can be worn comfortably for hours.

To help create smaller glasses arms, Snapdragon AR2 uses a multi-chip architecture that includes an AR processor and a co-processor, which distribute the processing of latency-sensitive perception data directly on the glasses and then offload more complex data processing requirements to a Snapdragon-powered phone or PC.

The AR processor uses a dedicated hardware acceleration engine to improve user motion tracking and localization and an AI accelerator to reduce latency for sensitive input interactions, including hand tracking or 6DoF. Further, the connectivity platform uses Qualcomm Fast Connect 7800 connectivity system to unlock WiFi 7 technology and reach less than 2ms latency between the AR glasses and the phone.

Companies like LG, Lenovo, Nreal, TCL, Sharp, Oppo and more are working with Qualcomm to create smart glasses.

Sound Platforms

Qualcomm’s S5 Gen 2 and S3 Gen 2 Sound platforms are feature-rich, ultra-lower power platforms and add new features to Snapdragon Sound, which include spatial audio with dynamic head-tracking, improved lossless music streaming and 48ms latency between phone and earbud for lag-free gaming. Additionally, the platforms offer third-generation Qualcomm Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation that improves the listener experience by adapting to both in-ear fit and the external environment.

The platforms also feature adaptive active noise cancellation that includes Adaptive Transparency mode with automatic speech detection and support smooth transitions between immersive noise-cancelling. Expect Qualcomm S5 and S3 Gen 2 sound platforms in devices in the second half of 2023.

Mobile Computing

Finally, Qualcomm and Microsoft are collaborating with new AI-accelerated experiences for Windows 11 with Windows Studio Effects Voice Focus, Background Blur, Automatic Framing and Eye Contact. The Surface 9 Pro 5G also features the Microsoft SQ3 powered by Snapdragon.

Google Wallet comes to Fitbit Sense 2, Versa 4

Fitbit’s latest smartwatches, the Sense 2 and Versa 4, were both slated to get several Google features in post-launch updates. Now, the first Google feature has arrived: Google Wallet.

In a blog post shared on November 15th, Fitbit said it started rolling out Google Wallet to the Sense 2 and Versa 4. If you’ve got one of those Fitbit smartwatches, you should be able to head into the Fitbit app, tap your profile picture in the top-left corner, tap your device, then tap the ‘Wallet’ option. From there, you can add your Google Wallet cards for contactless payment.

The addition means Fitbit users can now pick between Fitbit Pay or Google Wallet, a nice benefit for anyone already using Google Wallet that doesn’t want to run multiple payment apps.

Fitbit also snuck mention of turn-by-turn Google Maps navigation into the blog post, but don’t get excited. The blog post notes that Google Maps is “coming soon” to the Sense 2 and Versa 4, which we’ve known for a while now. It’d be nice to have an official date for those features, but where’s the fun in telling customers exactly when they can expect something.

Oh, and there’s still no Google Assistant support on the Sense 2 and Versa 4, a feature available on previous versions of the smartwatches. That’s a major bummer, although Fitbit couldn’t “confirm or deny” if Assistant would come to the Sense 2 in the future. I won’t hold my breath.

Samsung expands game streaming to millions more devices

Samsung is expanding its game streaming offerings with support for millions of additional devices and thousands of new games.

To start, Samsung is bringing Gaming Hub, its all-in-one spot for platforms like Xbox Cloud Gaming, to select 2021 TVs. Beginning next week and continuing throughout the year, this rollout includes the 98QN90A, 32Q60A and all sizes of the Q70A and AU8000 series. The company added support for Xbox Cloud Gaming to its 2022 displays in June.

Over the next few weeks, 4K support (at up to 60fps) for Nvidia GeForce Now will also be introduced on Samsung TVs. This will come to 2022 and select 2021 Samsung smart TVs.

Additionally, the Antstream Arcade and Blacknut streaming services will be joining Samsung Gaming Hub sometime in 2023. The former service offers more than 1,500 retro games, while the latter features more than 500 console and PC titles from across the years.

Samsung is also running a holiday promotion on 2022 TVs that includes an Xbox controller and three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for free, although the company confirmed to MobileSyrup that this won’t be offered in Canada.

Finally, Samsung says it’s partnered with comedian Conan O’Brien on a new Samsung Gaming Hub-focused entry in his popular “Clueless Gamer” series, although a release date for the video was not confirmed.

Apple and Major League Soccer ‘MLS Season Pass’ launched in February 2023

Apple and Major League Soccer (MLS) have announced that the ‘MLS Season Pass’ will launch on February 1st, 2023 in more than 100 countries, including Canada and the United States.

The season pass is available directly through the Apple TV app on Apple TV set-top boxes, smart TVs, video game consoles and more. The package includes every live MLS regular-season game, the playoffs and the Leagues Cup, with no regional blackouts. Further, all matches featuring Canadian teams will stream in French.

The season pass is part of a 10-year content agreement between MLS and Apple. This is part of a broader strategy by Apple to offer more live sports through its Apple TV streaming app. For example, Apple’s Friday Night Baseball offers free Major League Baseball (MLB) games through Apple TV+.

Strangely, Apple’s press release regarding the season pass launch doesn’t include any information regarding Canadian pricing. However, several U.S. publications are reporting the cost is $99 USD (about $131.84 CAD) per season or $15 USD (roughly $19.98 CAD) per month. If you’re an Apple TV+ subscriber ($8.99 CAD/month), that cost goes down to $79 (approximately $105.21 CAD) per season and $13 (about $17.31 CAD) per month.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Apple Canadian pricing and will update this story when more information is available.
