Testing Apple’s new iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via Satellite

iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models can connect to satellites allowing you to contact emergency services or share your location without being connected to a cellular network. Now that Apple’s new Emergency SOS satellite infrastructure is available in Canada, we got the opportunity to try a hands-on demo.

We didn’t contact emergency services during our time with the feature, but if you try it out at home, you will. To avoid this there’s a dedicated demo mode in the ‘Emergency SOS’ section of the iOS settings app.

We tried out both features that come with Emergency SOS via Satellite services. The first and most important is what happens in an emergency. We used a demo iPhone 14 Pro with access to a real Globalstar satellite, which relayed directly to the ground station. However, the ground station didn’t actually contact the emergency services. This process worked well and faster than expected.

To use it, call 911 with no service. Your phone will first try to use regular cellular roaming to attach to any network in the area, but if it can’t, the option to trigger SOS via Satellite kicks in. When this happens, it says, “No connection. Try Emergency Text via Satellite,” and the green call button will transfer you to the Satellite SOS interface.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A demo of the emergency services questionnaire if you select ‘Fire.’

From there, you answer a quick questionnaire regarding your predicament,  injuries, fire, or whatever else. Following the questions, you’re asked if you want to share your location and a transcript of the questionnaire with your ‘Emergency contact.’ If you don’t have one yet, you can set your Emergency contact in the Apple Health app or via the ‘Emergency SOS’ section in Settings.

Hold the phone steady for a few seconds, or minutes, depending on your view of the sky, and you’ll make contact with the relay station. The folks at the station will text back via satellite and try to collect more information to provide detailed information to an actual emergency dispatch station. Since satellite connections can be fickle, these messages should be brief, but you can still offer a sentence or two of information.

The small Satellite icon moves to tell you where to point your phone for the best connection.

When we tried this out, we noticed that you’re sometimes forced to spin around a bit to get a solid satellite connection, and your handset needs to stay connected to the satellite. There’s a very easy-to-use guide within the persistent notification and haptic feedback whenever the phone disconnects. Sometimes there will be satellite blackouts as they pass overhead, but the phone should be smart enough to know roughly how long before the next one passes. During the demo, we lost connection and the phone predicted re-connection in two minutes. It was right.

The secondary feature enabled by satellite integration is in Apple’s ‘Find My’ app. If you’re hiking and want your loved ones to know where you are, you can send your location via satellite. This is a barebones implementation, but for people who are often exploring solo, this is very helpful for updating people at home to let them know you’re safe. There’s a small cottage industry of devices like this so it will be interesting to see what happens as phones step into that market.

The emergency contact transcript (left) looks like a text message, but there’s nowhere to respond.

Other tips

  • The feature should be live as of November 15th. You’ll need to have the latest iOS update to take advantage of it.
  • The demo mode is worth trying as it familiarizes you with the system in case you need to use it in an emergency. It’s located in the Settings app at the bottom of the ‘Emergency SOS’ page.
  • You can also text 911 or SOS and gain access to Emergency Services via Satellite that way.
  • International travellers visiting Canada can use Emergency SOS via satellite, except if they bought their phone in mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao.
  • Emergency SOS via satellite might not work in places above 62° latitude, such as northern parts of Canada and Alaska.
  • Trees with light foliage might slow down the connection, and dense foliage might block it. Hills or mountains, canyons, and tall structures can also block the connection. Rain and snow should be ok.
  • Since a failed 911 call triggers, this feature also works with fall detection and car crash detection outside of service areas.

DoorDash launches new safety features focusing on Dasher safety

DoorDash has launched a new list of safety features for their drivers, or ‘Dashers,’ in Canada.

Real-Time Safety Alerts sees the company partner with samdesk, a platform that keeps track of global crises. In the event of an emergency, the company will alert Dashers, merchants, and customers of situations in an impacted area. The company piloted the feature in the U.S, responding to active shootings, bomb threats, and building fires.

SafeChat focuses on the platform’s chat function in hopes of creating a safe environment. If inappropriate language is detected in a chat, the person on the receiving end will have the option to report the incident, and the sender will receive a warning. A Dasher can bow out of a delivery without consequence.

Safety Reporting allows Dashers to report safety incidents. Porch Light Reminders will see customers receive notifications to turn on their lights when Dashers are approaching to help them feel safe.

“We look forward to continuing to develop and launch innovative new safety features so Dashers earn with more confidence knowing they can get help when they need it,” the company said in a press release.

Where to stream Kevin Conroy Batman shows and movies in Canada

On Thursday, November 10th, Kevin Conroy, the long-running voice of Batman in countless DC Comics projects, sadly passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 66.

For many, Conroy was the definitive take on the Dark Knight ever since he first voiced the character in the beloved ’90s show, Batman: The Animated Series. Conroy would extend his gravelly, commanding tones to a DC shows (Justice League, Batman Beyond); movies (Batman: Mask of the PhantasmBatman Beyond: Return of the Joker), video games (the Arkham trilogy) and, even, live-action (the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event).

Over the weekend, many people took to sharing tributes to Conroy, including, most notably, his Batman: The Animated Series co-stars Mark Hamill (The Joker) and Canada’s Tara Strong (Barbara Gordon/Batgirl).

Naturally, part of those tributes includes revisiting some of Conroy’s impressive body of work. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of where you can stream some of his Batman movies and TV shows in Canada. Of course, this doesn’t account for his entire 30-year career as the Caped Crusader, or his other work, such as early stints on Broadway or his heartwarming 9/11 volunteer efforts. Hopefully, though, this will make it a bit easier to celebrate a man who touched so many.

Note: the prices listed below are for HD versions of content; SD versions will, of course, be a bit cheaper.

TV shows

Batman: The Animated Series

All three seasons of the classic series that kicked off Conroy’s iconic tenure as Batman are streaming on:

  • Teletoon+ — $5.99/month (with 30-day free trial)
  • StackTV — $12.99/month (with 30-day free trial)

Both services are available as paid channels on Amazon Prime Video.

Superman: The Animated Series

Fittingly, Conroy and Batman: The Animated Series served as the foundation for a larger DC Animated Universe (DCAU), and, from there, we got Superman: The Animated Series. Multiple Batman and Superman crossovers were featured in STAS and The New Batman Adventures (see below), including, most prominently, the three-part “World’s Finest” team-up between the two icons.

Best of all, STAS is included with Teletoon+ (5.99/month with a 30-day free trial), like several of the other shows, so you get more Conroy Batman as part of the same Amazon Prime Video channel.

The New Batman Adventures

Unfortunately, this one-season continuation of BTAS isn’t actually included with any streaming service. Instead, you can purchase it individually on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms like iTunes ($24.99) and Google Play ($21.49).

Batman Beyond

This excellent cyberpunk successor to BTAS features sees Conroy play an older, wearier version of Bruce Wayne as he serves as mentor to a new Dark Knight, Terry McGinnis.

Sadly, Batman Beyond isn’t actually on a Canadian streaming service, so you’ll have to go with PVOD platforms. For the complete series, it’ll cost $50 on iTunes and Google Play.

Justice League

BTAS and STAS helped pave the way for an excellent team-up series, Justice League, in which Conroy’s Batman features prominently as one of the seven core members of the team.

As with Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League is available on:

  • Teletoon+ — $5.99/month (with 30-day free trial)
  • StackTV — $12.99/month (with 30-day free trial)

Both services are available as paid channels on Amazon Prime Video.

Justice League Unlimited

This successor to Justice League expanded the team’s roster significantly, but Conroy’s Batman still played a major recurring role.

Like its predecessor, Justice League Unlimited is available on:

  • Teletoon+ — $5.99/month (with 30-day free trial)
  • StackTV — $12.99/month (with 30-day free trial)

Both services are available as paid channels on Amazon Prime Video.

Crisis on Infinite Earths

Conroy made his long-awaited live-action debut as an alternate universe Bruce Wayne in the CW’s five-part Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, which spanned ArrowThe FlashSupergirlLegends of Tomorrow and Batwoman. Specifically, Conroy appeared in the Batwoman episode (“Part Two”).

Oddly, Batwoman is only streaming on Vidéotron’s Club Illico service, which starts at $10/month. Otherwise, you can buy Conroy’s episode individually for $3.49 on iTunes and $1.99 on Google Play.

Movies

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

One of the greatest Batman movies of all time is an animated one. Based on BTAS, this classic follows Conroy’s Batman earlier in his career as he falls in love while facing off against a new villain, the Phantasm, and the Joker.

Unlike much of the other DCAU projects, Mask of the Phantasm is actually streaming on Crave, which costs $19.99/month.

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

Another outstanding animated Batman film, Return of the Joker sees Terry and Bruce as they try to stop the Joker, who was believed to be dead.

While Return of the Joker isn’t included with any Canadian streaming service, it can be rented on iTunes and Google Play for $4.99.

Batman: Gotham Knight

Interestingly, this anime anthology was intended to be set between Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but it features Conroy instead of Christian Bale.

You can rent Gotham Knight for $4.99 on iTunes and Google Play.

Justice League Doom

This animated movie has added significance as it served as a spiritual successor of sorts to Justice League thanks to many of the return of many voice talent, including Conroy, as well as it being the last written work from late series writer Dwayne McDuffie. Conroy’s Batman plays a pivotal role here, too, as we find out that contingency plans he made to take down the Justice League have been stolen by the villainous Vandal Savage.

You can rent Justice League Doom for $4.99 on iTunes and Google Play.

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse

If you want more DCAU reunions, these next two movies are for you.

Public Enemies finds Batman (Conroy) and Superman (STAS‘ Tim Daly) forced to face off against old allies when Lex Luthor becomes U.S. president. You can rent Superman/Batman: Public Enemies for $4.99 on iTunes and Google Play.

Apocalypse, meanwhile, is a standalone sequel that sees Batman, Superman and Supergirl teaming up to face Darkseid. You can rent Superman/Batman: Apocalypse on iTunes ($4.99) and Google Play ($3.99).

Games

As mentioned, Conroy also played Batman in a variety of games. The biggest of these, of course, is Rocksteady’s critically-acclaimed Arkham trilogy:

  • Batman: Arkham Asylum (available on PC, while a remastered version is included in the Batman: Return to Arkham collection on PS4 and Xbox One)
  • Batman: Arkham City (available on PC, while a remastered version is included in the Batman: Return to Arkham collection on PS4 and Xbox One)
  • Batman: Arkham Knight (available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One)

Conroy also starred in the two Injustice games, which are available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Additionally, Conroy’s last time playing Batman was in this year’s Warner Bros. crossover fighting game, Multiversus. The free-to-play title is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

DC Pride 2022

Earlier this year, DC Comics published DC Pride 2022, an anthology featuring stories from a number of LGBTQ+ creators. In this book, Conroy wrote a heartfelt story about his early career struggles as a gay man and how they ultimately helped him in his portrayal of Batman.

Following Conroy’s passing, DC has made the entire DC Pride 2022 collection available for free through its DC Universe comic reading site and app.

Evidently, Kevin Conroy and Batman are inseparable. The influence that he had on the character was profound, and his loss is deeply felt among fans, especially the many that grew up with him in Batman: The Animated Series. For so many, he was Batman, and he will be forever missed.

Which are your favourite Conroy Batman projects? What did his Batman mean to you? Let us know in the comments.

Google is introducing ads in the Play Store Search bar

After a recent change in ad placements in the App Store, Google is looking to rejig ad placements in the Google Play Store as well.

As reported by 9to5Google, Google is looking to place ads directly in the Play Store Search bar.

Regularly, when you tap on the Play Store Search bar, you’ll be presented with your four most recent searches, alongside your keyboard to type in a new search. Now, on a device running version 33.0.17-21 of the Play Store, folks over at 9to5Google were able to spot apps that they’ve never searched for or interacted with show up in the Play Store Search bar. “They are all games, complete with their icons: Summoners War: Chronicles, Call of Duty Mobile Season 10, and Fishdom Solitaire,” the publication wrote.

Once you start typing in the Search bar, the ads go away, and the auto-complete suggestions take up the screen.

It is currently unknown if the apps/games that show up in the Search bar are boosted by their publishers (paid ads), or if they pop up depending on your search/download history as suggestions.

It’s worth noting that the same apps do not show in the ‘Suggested for you’ section for 9to5Google, which might indicate that the apps showing up is not due to organic suggestions, and rather, paid ads.

The updated Play Store Search bar is not available to all users yet, so it might just be an A/B test that might or might not make its way to the stable build.

Distributel proposed to buy Freedom Mobile, but its offers were ignored

Distributel was looking to acquire Shaw’s wireless assets in April, a publicly shared document at the Competition Tribunal’s hearing into the Rogers-Shaw merger show.

Distributel made two proposals, but Rogers never acknowledged the offers. Distributel made the offers before Bell announced it was acquiring the Ottawa-based telecommunications company.

The affidavit of Christopher Hickey, director of regulatory affairs at Distributel, says Bell’s acquisition wasn’t related to efforts to acquire Freedom Mobile from Shaw.

Another document shared with the public acknowledges the acquisitions of Ebox, which Bell announced it would take over, and VMedia, which Québecor acquired. The document calls the latter acquisition a “strategic” move, citing the Rogers-Shaw merger.

Rogers started meeting with prospective Freedom Mobile buyers earlier this year. As previously reported, the company was talking with multiple parties to secure a deal to satisfy competition concerns brought by Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne. The company agreed to sell Freedom to Québecor subsidiary Vidéotron for $2.85 billion. It’s not clear how much Distributel offered.

Distributel’s plans were revealed on day five of the hearing, which is in its second week. The day started with cross-examining representatives from Telus, which showed the company attempted to “kill, shape, and slow” the merger.

The details, marked initially to be confidential, were shared with the public after Chief Justice Paul Crampton said the parties needed to make efforts to be transparent. The first week of the merger saw the parties going behind closed doors on several occasions. Justice Crampton’s move to make things public suggests not everything discussed in-camera in week one needed to be that way.

Despite the transparency efforts, not all witnesses appeared before the public. Namely, Comcast, the American telecom company, had their session behind closed doors. The company argued they were only made aware of the need to be in a public session 20 minutes before they had to speak, and their prepared statement was made with complete confidentially in mind.

Meta kills of smartwatch project and Portal video displays

Following the decision to cut 11,000 employees, Meta has reportedly killed its smartwatch project and Portal smart displays.

Reuters reports that Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, revealed to employees that the tech giant will wind down its development of Portal and its smartwatch project.

“It was just going to take so long, and take so much investment to get into the enterprise segment, it felt like the wrong way to invest your time and money,” said Bosworth in a statement to Meta employees, according to Reuters.

Meta’s smartwatch development team will shift its focus to augmented reality glasses. On the other hand, Portal has not been a significant revenue generator for the company formerly known as Facebook.

Last week, Meta reduced its workforce by 13 percent or 11,000 Meta employees worldwide. Following the announcement, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, confirmed that it will continue its hiring freeze through the first quarter of 2023. Meta has lost $9.4 billion on its metaverse technology in 2022 so far.

Dbrand is selling Blue verified checkmark stickers for $8

Following in Tumblr’s footsteps, Toronto-based Dbrand is also giving into Twitter’s Blue checkmark relevancy hype.

The smartphone skin and accessory brand has just released a Blue verified checkmark sticker pack for the same price as Twitter Blue — $8 USD (roughly $10.6 CAD).

The $8 USD sticker pack contains eight stickers. Five in small size, two medium, and a large sized sticker. “One lawsuit and $44 billion dollars later, the world’s biggest crypto scammer has the solution nobody asked for: an $8 monthly fee to rent a digital checkmark,” wrote Dbrand in the sticker description, referring to Elon Musk as the world’s biggest crypto scammer. “We just have one question: why stop at Twitter accounts? Instead of footing the bill for the worst bluff of all time, pay us once to verify whatever the fuck you want. Checkmate, Elon.”

Twitter rolled out its ‘Twitter Blue with Verification’ in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. on November 9th, only for it to be suspended the next day indefinitely due to a myriad of fake imposter accounts on the platform. The new subscription was only available on iOS and iPadOS, and allowed the buyer almost instant access to a Blue verification badge, alongside perks like priority in replies, mentions and search, the ability to post longer videos and see fewer ads.

Check out Dbrand’s Blue verification stickers here.
