Some 2023 Model 3 Teslas are hitting the road with Model Y’s turn signals

Tesla might reportedly be producing the Model 3 Performance variant with its higher-end Model Y‘s tail lights, as spotted by a buyer this week, and reported by TeslaNorth.

The buyer (u/InformalSky8443), who picked up their vehicle in Forth Worth, Texas, wrote on Reddit that their vehicle has both the C-style brake lights and the Amber turn signals.  “I think I lucked out because they gave me one with Model Y tail lights,” wrote u/InformalSky8443. “Or was there a design change?”

Other users commented on u/InformalSky8443 post, saying their 2023 Model 3 comes with Red turn lights, while a different user said, “I ordered mine on Sept 9 and picked up on Oct 29 and have the amber turn signals.”

Similarly, a different user pointed out a study done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that determined that “amber signals show a 5.3 percent effectiveness in reducing two-vehicle crashes where a lead vehicle is rear struck in the act of turning left, turning right, merging into traffic, changing lanes, or entering/leaving a parking space.”

This doesn’t seem to be a mixup. Amber signals are reportedly a standard for cars in Europe and Australia. Tesla Model Y was updated to feature Amber turn signals soon after its launch in 2020, and now it seems that the upgrade is making its way to the Model 3.

Google Pixel Watch bug displays incorrect calorie burn info, provides inconsistent numbers

Google’s Pixel Watch is widely considered to be an all-around solid fitness tracker with a suite of solid smartwatch features. However, one bug discovered since its release is the inaccurate calorie burn data the wearable provides.

Google has been really utilizing the Fitbit umbrella, especially when it comes to the Pixel Watch. In a sense, the device bridges the gap between the Pixel line and the fitness tracker and offers the best of both worlds. However, users are starting to discover that the wearable’s Fitbit integration software is inflating calorie burn results.

The Pixel Watch is experiencing an issue where it displays inaccurate data on a user’s basal metabolic rate (BMR). This leads to inflated results and unreliable stats for those invested in keeping track. BMR is a stat that considers age, weight, height and sex. This metric utilizes these factors to calculate passive calories burned throughout the day. Therefore, if a device is inaccurately reading a BMR count, the data churned out for the user is relatively meaningless.

The Google Pixel Watch team is aware of the issue. Google states that rebooting the Pixel Watch may temporarily solve the problem. While it’s unknown what a proper fix looks like, it raises a much deeper conversation regarding fitness trackers. Different wearable manufacturers use various algorithms to power their trackers. Therefore, there are often inconsistencies across the board.

Fitness trackers from Google, Samsung and countless others use data taken from steps taken, heart rates, distance, etc. and combine them with the metrics listed above. Pairing with age, height, gender and weight, these trackers estimate what they believe is an accurate read on calories burned.

As of now, fitness trackers and wearables aren’t able to give 100 percent accurate data. It’s important to keep that in mind when looking at calories burned. However, they can provide a good baseline. Using the Pixel Watch as an example, it shows that a minor bug can even impact the algorithms powering these statistics.

Mocking Twitter, Tumblr starts selling verification badges for $7.99

Tumblr doesn’t have a verification identification system like Twitter and Instagram, making it almost impossible to tell whether an account belongs to the person the account claims to be or if it’s a fake. Now, following in Twitter’s footsteps, Tumblr is rolling out its own “Important Blue Internet Checkmark” for your blogs.

Tumblr’s Blue Checkmark looks almost identical to Twitter’s verification badge, though it doesn’t do anything. Yep, you read that right. Tumblr’s verification badge does absolutely nothing, and is only adds element of ‘aesthetic’ to a blog of your choice.

The “Important Blue Internet Checkmark” costs $7.99 on Tumblr, and unlike Twitter, you get two checkmarks for the same price on Twitter. But they don’t do anything, nor do they offer the buyer any perks or additional features. It’s simply Tumblr taking a jab at Twitter and Elon Musk for the new CEO’s not-so-well-thought-out idea of letting people be verified on the platform for a monthly fee.

“This is not a verification status; it’s an Important Blue Internet Checkmark, which in 2022 is just as legit. Also, the Important Blue Internet Checkmark may turn into a bunch of crabs at any time 🦀,” wrote Tumblr.

Twitter rolled out its ‘Twitter Blue with Verification’ in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. yesterday. Although the new subscription is only available on iOS and iPadOS at the moment, it allows the buyer almost instant access to a Blue verification badge, alongside perks like priority in replies, mentions and search, the ability to post longer videos and see fewer ads. Read more about Twitter Blue with Verification here.

As for Tumblr, please don’t go to the platform and pay for the ‘Important Blue Internet Checkmarks.’ Or, go ahead and pay for it. You do you; just know that it’s nothing more than a joke, and you won’t get access to any perks at Tumblr by paying the $7.99 fee.

OxygenOS 13 begins rolling out to OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro

The OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro are finally receiving the advancements of OxygenOS 13. A couple of months after the software hit the flagship OnePlus 10 series, a stable version of OxygenOS 13 is rolling out to more users.

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro users should expect to see Android 13 and its improvements rolling out to their devices. Released earlier this year in August, OxygenOS 13 has been incrementally adopted by many companies. Alongside Google and Samsung, OnePlus has been integrating the software since it left its beta stage.

For OnePlus 9 series users, OxygenOS 13 works to improve the somewhat underwhelming Android 12 software. This iteration of the software brings a slew of stability solutions, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. Additionally, it introduces a new notification centre that is largely inspired by Google’s ‘Material You’. Multitasking is also made easier thanks to its new ‘Smart Sidebar.’

OxygenOS 13 does have some hiccups and a few minor bugs. However, MobileSyrup’s Brad Bennet spent hands-on time with the beta and full release. Overall, it seems as though the full version offers more positives than drawbacks. For OnePlus 9 series users, this should be a welcome arrival.

Earlier this year, OnePlus made the decision to develop OxygenOS and its ColorOS independently. This news came after the two pieces of software were being tied together. The company chose to separate the two in order to allow faster updates moving forward.

The OxygenOS 13 update itself comes in as a sizeable 5.02GB install. Keep that in mind if you are looking to update your OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro. The update is incrementally rolling out to various regions around the world. Users in Canada and the U.S. should have the update available now.

Elon Musk says ‘bankruptcy is not out of the question’ for Twitter

The saga continues.

If you thought Elon Musk adding a grey checkmark and then killing it just as quickly, before creating an even more confusing verification system, was the most outlandish Twitter news you’d read this week, think again.

Roughly two weeks after taking over Twitter, Musk has finally addressed staff with a rather bleak message. During a recent all-hands meeting, Musk said that Twitter is currently losing so much money that “bankruptcy is not out of the question,” according to The Information and Platformer.

Twitter hasn’t turned a profit since 2009, and advertisers are rapidly pulling out of the platform following Musk’s takeover. During the meeting, Musk emphasized that Twitter Blue subscriptions are integral to the platform’s future.

“The reason we’re going hardcore on subscribers is to keep Twitter alive,” said Musk during the meeting. In other Twitter-related news, Musk recently reversed the company’s “work from anywhere” policy and said that “if you can physically make it to an office and you don’t show up, resignation accepted.”

Amid the ongoing chaos, several top executives have left Twitter, including the company’s chief information security officer, the chief compliance officer and the chief privacy officer.

November security patch fixes Pixel lock screen bypass bug

Google’s November 2022 security patch dropped for Pixel phones a few days ago, and, if you haven’t already updated your Pixel phone, you should. The update includes a fix for a security flaw that could allow someone to bypass the phone’s lock screen using a SIM card.

David Schütz discovered the issue and detailed it in a blog post and video. While the post is well worth a read if you’re interested in this kind of thing, the short version is that someone with physical access to a Pixel device could bypass lock screen protections, including the fingerprint and PIN, and gain access to the phone.

To do so, all an attacker would need to do is swap the SIM card in the phone. In the video, Schütz shows himself swapping a SIM card into a locked Pixel 6, which then asks for the SIM PIN. After entering that wrong three times, the Pixel asks for a personal unblocking key (PUK), which is used to reset a SIM PIN if a user forgets it. However, in the case of Pixel phones, after entering the PUK and typing in a new SIM PIN, the phone unlocks.

Put another way, an attacker would only need a SIM card with a SIM PIN a PUK code that they know to gain access to any Pixel smartphone. The November 2022 security patch, which is now available for the Pixel 4a and newer, fixes the problem.

Frustratingly, Schütz reported the security flaw to Android’s Vulnerability Rewards Program in the middle of 2022, but Google didn’t do anything until September after some in-person prodding. Still, Schütz got a $70,000 USD reward (about $93,703 CAD), which is a good chunk of change for spotting the flaw.

Apple’s Emergency SOS satellite infrastructure launches in Canada later this month

Apple is launching its Emergency SOS service in Canada and the U.S. later this month. The company is investing a significant amount of money to support its upcoming Emergency SOS service for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. Apple says its Advancement Manufacturing Fund is providing the ability for customers to connect to a satellite for emergency services when network services are unavailable.

The Cupertino, California-based company’s investment of roughly $450 million USD (roughly $602 million CAD) is primarily going to Globalstar. The Covington, Louisiana-based company has stations based around the U.S. and operates a global satellite service. Apple’s investment is going toward’s Globalstar’s network and ground stations. These ground stations operate in Nevada, Hawaii, Texas, Alaska, Florida and Puerto Rico. The investment will help ensure iPhone 14 users are able to connect when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable.

Earlier this year, Apple unveiled its iPhone 14 and announced Emergency SOS will be supported by Globalstar and its spectrum in L and S bands. These are designed by ITU Radio Regulators and made for mobile satellite services.

In the event that an iPhone 14 user finds themselves without a signal and is in need of assistance, they can send an Emergency SOS request. One of Globalstar’s 24 satellites is able to pick up the request and send it to a ground station. These satellites travel roughly 16,000mp/h (roughly 24,600km/h). Once the ground station receives the request, emergency services are then contacted to dispatch assistance. Alternatively, the message is sent to an Apple-trained emergency specialist. This is in the event that the closest emergency service location is unable to receive text messages at the time.

“The launch of Emergency SOS via satellite direct to iPhone is a generational advancement in satellite communications, and we are proud that Globalstar’s satellites and spectrum assets will play a central role in saving lives,” said Jay Monroe, Globalstar’s executive chairman says in a statement. “With Apple’s infrastructure investment, we’ve grown our teams in California and elsewhere to construct, expand, and upgrade our ground stations, and we look forward to the next chapter in Globalstar’s lifesaving technology.”

Apple states Emergency SOS will be available via an iOS 16 update coming later this month. The service is confirmed to be free for at least two years with the purchase of an iPhone 14. Following this window, Apple may begin charging users for access.

There’s currently no word on when or if Apple plans to expand support of Emergency SOS to other regions around the globe.
