In a follow-up video, Callaghan addresses those who claim she’s lying. “No, I am not lying, and doing what I do for a living to lie about something like this would be pretty silly.”

Nvidia looking into reports of RTX 4090 cables burning or melting

Nvidia is investigating reports that the power cable for its RTX 4090 graphics cards is burning or melting in some situations.

Some users experiencing the issue have taken to Reddit, posting photos of the damage. The Verge cited user ‘reggie_gakil’ as the first to post about it, detailing burn damage on their Gigabyte RTX 4090. A photo also shows damage on the ’12VHPWR’ adapter that Nvidia includes with the 4090 card. Another Redditor replied in the same thread showing similar damage to their Asus RTX 4090 card and power adapter.

Nvidia told The Verge that it’s investigating the reports and is in contact with the first Redditor and plans to reach out to the second as well.

However, several people have already raised concerns about the 12VHPWR power adapter, specifically noting that the adapter could cause issues if bent a certain way. CableMod, a company that makes custom cables for use in PCs, includes details in its 12VHPWR guide about how to bend the cable to avoid these issues:

“The 12VHPWR connector and the terminals used in it are much smaller than the previous generation. Through our extensive testing, it appears that bending the wires too close to the connector could result in some of the terminals coming loose or misaligning within the connector itself. This may lead to an uneven load across the other wires, increasing the risk of overheating damage.”

CableMod recommends bending the cable a minimum distance of 35mm away from the connector to avoid the problem. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work in practice, as there’s often not enough space between the graphics card and the side of the PC case for a safe bend. PCI-SIG, the consortium responsible for developing standards around peripheral component I/O data transfers, also warned of issues with the 12VHPWR adapter back in September. Moreover, the PCI-SIG included several examples of how the adapter could melt or burn, which looks very similar to the Reddit reports.

The Verge also highlighted a video from PC-building YouTuber JayzTwoCents, who called the 12VHPWR adapter “dangerous.” But when he brought his concerns to Nvidia, the company said in an email that he was “worrying about issues that don’t exist.”

While it remains to be seen what comes of Nvidia’s investigation, it’s worth noting that some power supply vendors have started to ship 12VHPWR cables to replace the bulky connector for a single cable that should avoid the bending issues. The Verge says new ATX 3.0 power supplies should also help, but there aren’t that many available yet, and it can be a tough sell to PC builders who are upgrading components and already have a working power supply.

Samsung’s Camera Assistant gives you more control of S22 camera

Samsung’s One UI Good Lock app offers a variety of modules that can help users customize their handsets, one of which is the new Camera Assistant.

The Camera Assistant showcases some of the image processing-related options in the Galaxy S22. For instance, you can turn off Samsung’s HDR processing with the app. This option was previously available within the camera app, but was removed.

Additionally, the Camera Assistant offers a new Soften pictures feature that can soften sharp edges. You can also disable Auto Lens to prevent the phone from switching to different lenses depending on light conditions or zooming. With that, users would need to toggle if they want to use the 10x zoom lens, 5x or the standard lens. There’s also a new faster shutter option, which can help when you’re trying to take action shots.

The Camera Assistant is currently in beta, with the feature officially launching in 2023, according to the Samsung Community thread. You can download the module from the Galaxy Store, but it’s locked to certain regions.

This feature seems to give you a lot more control of the camera — hopefully, it’s pre-downloaded and easy to use on the Galaxy S23 series and comes to Canada.

Google Chrome will no longer support Windows 7 and 8.1 next year

Google Chrome will no longer support Windows 7 and 8.1 sometime next year. According to  GoogleChrome 110, which is posed to launch on February 7th, 2023, will be the last version supporting the older Microsoft operating systems.

You’ll need Windows 10 or later to receive future Chrome releases.

It makes sense that Google will be ending support for Windows 7 and 8.1 as Microsoft also plans to end support for the extended versions of these operating systems on January 10th, 2023.

However, according to The Verge, many are still using the older operating systems, with data suggesting at least 100 million PCs are estimated to offer the older OSes. It’s worth mentioning, Chrome will still work after version 110, but it won’t get any future updates.

It’s suggested that you update to a later operating system to get security updates on Chrome still.

PS5 Discord voice integration spotted online

Discord is testing a voice chat feature for PlayStation 5 users, but it’s not yet available to the public. @advaithj1 on Twitter spotted the voice integration and posted the images online on the social media platform.

It’s still unclear when this feature will officially go live, but it’s rumoured to release in March. However, it appears to be in the beta version of the Discord mobile app in a closed test. However, it’s unclear if this is just an internal test at Discord.

It’s currently unclear how exactly this feature will work on the PlayStation consoles. Based on the images, you’ll need to sign in with your PlayStation ID, which then brings users to the PlayStation Mobile app. It’s suspected that it will allow the call to transfer to the PS5.

However, it’s weird this feature will only be available on PS5 and PS4, as the screenshot shows the join chat on PS5 but doesn’t say it on the PS4 section.

PlayStation already has a pretty good chat feature, so it’s unclear if PS4 players will continue on this chat service or if everyone will be forced to switch over to Discord, but only PS5 players will be able to use the app.

Annapurna Interactive’s A Memoir Blue coming to iOS on November 3

Another indie game from Annapurna Interactive is heading to iOS.

The boutique publisher has announced that A Memoir Blue, an interactive poem from New York-based Cloisters Interactive, will hit iOS on November 3rd. The game debuted on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox consoles (including Game Pass), Nintendo Switch and PC in February.

In A Memoir Blue, a superstar athlete reconnects with her inner child to deepen her love for her late mother. Notably, the game incorporates hand-drawn and 3D art to bring her memories to life in a unique magical-realist way.

The most recent Annapurna game to come to iOS was Hindsight in August — interestingly, another narrative-driven experience about a woman and her late mother. The publisher also made waves earlier this year with the cat game Stray.
