Apple to release iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura on October 24th

iPadOS 16 will be available to iPad users on October 24th.

The software has several new features in various areas, including Messages and Mail.

For Messages, users will be able to edit or unsend texts, as well as recover deleted messages. In Mail, emails can be scheduled ahead of time or be cancelled before it gets to the recipient’s inbox.

Many will also be relieved to hear the Weather app is finally making its way onto the iPad.

Users will need an iPad or iPad mini (5th generation or later), an iPad Air (3rd generation or later) or an iPad Pro to access the update.

Apple revealed the details alongside two models of the 2022 iPad Pro, featuring the same M2 chip seen in the MacBook Air (2022) and 13-inch MacBook Pro (2022).

The tech giant also revealed a redesigned entry-level iPad. The 10.9-inch device with 2360 x 1640 pixel resolution features squared-off edges, a Touch ID button and USB-C.

Apple also lists October 24th as the release date for macOS Ventura and its notable Continuity Camera feature, which allows users to use their iPhone as a webcam.

Instagram working on Myspace-like ability to add a song to profiles

Instagram is bringing back one of the best aspects of the 2003 social network, Myspace.

The once-beloved site offered several cool features, like allowing users to customize their profile through HTML script and adding music to their page that automatically plays.

According to well-known leaker Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is working on a feature that will allow users to select a song for their profile. Unlike Myspace, the track probably won’t automatically start playing when viewing your account. Instead, it will likely consist of a quick look or link to your favourite song.

It’s worth mentioning that rumours indicate Meta-owned Instagram is only testing out this feature and that it may never make it to the public version of the app.

Hearthstone-inspired Marvel Snap now available on mobile and PC

Marvel Snap, a new collectible card game based on the mega popular Marvel Universe, is now officially available on mobile and in early access on PC.

Notably, Marvel Snap was developed by Second Dinner, a new studio made up of many ex-Blizzard developers, including former Hearthstone director Ben Brode.

In Marvel Snap, you’ll assemble a deck of cards featuring hundreds of Marvel heroes and villains, including big names like Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Doctor Doom, Star-Lord, Daredevil and Deadpool, to lesser-known characters like Squirrel Girl, The Hood, Medusa and Sunspot.

Matches, meanwhile, have been designed to be mobile-friendly and bite-sized at about three minutes each. They play out in a grid containing 50-plus Marvel locations, including Wakanda, Asgard, the Baxter Building, Stark Tower and the Triskelion.

In the grid, you’ll place your character cards, each of which has an associated ‘Power,’ and the player with the highest Power level wins. Most cards and locations also have special effects that either give you a boost or set your opponent back. You can play against the computer or other players online.

As with any free-to-play game, there are microtransactions in Marvel Snap, although they work a little differently than you’d expect. Thankfully, you can’t actually buy cards to pay-to-win, which levels the playing field a bit. Instead, you can spend real money on variants of cards you already own that feature different artwork but are functionally the same.

That said, you can also fork over cash on credits to upgrade the rarity of cards, which increases your collection level and, in turn, lets you unlock more cards. Therefore, there is certainly a gameplay advantage from using real money, although it’s not as direct as buying cards outright.

Otherwise, the response to Marvel Snap has been quite positive during the early access period. You can download the game for yourself on iOS, Android and Steam.

It’s also worth noting that a fun ad for the launch was also released, featuring none other than Samuel L. Jackson reprising his long-running Marvel role of Nick Fury:

Second Dinner also has released a content update roadmap, promising regular new cards, locations, cosmetics, challenges and more. You can read more on that here.

TikTok to roll out new policy features for LIVE

TikTok is implementing a number of new tools for its live streaming feature, ‘LIVE.’

Starting November 23rd, the social media will increase the age people must be before going LIVE from 16 to 18.

A second new feature will allow creators to choose if they only want to reach adult audiences while hosting a live stream.

“We want our community to make the most of the opportunities LIVE can bring without compromising on safety,” TikTok said in a blog post.

“We believe these industry-leading updates can further protect the younger members of our community as they start and build their online presence.”

TikTok didn’t list an exact date to implement the change, just saying it would happen “in the coming weeks.”

A similar date is listed for an update of its keyword filtering tool that allows users to limit comments while LIVE. The update will send keyword suggestions to creators based on content creators commonly remove from a live stream.

“We have a vibrant and inspiring community on TikTok, and it’s important that our platform remains a safe, supportive, and joyful place for our community,” the company says.

You don’t need to dive in the ocean to get value from the Apple Watch Ultra

When Apple released the Apple Watch Ultra alongside the iPhone 14, the entire focus was on it being a fitness tracker for the adventurous and extreme. That’s not surprising with its incredible battery life and impressive durability.

The Apple Watch Ultra’s biggest problem is that it’s solely viewed as an extreme fitness tracker, and its marketing shows that. While it’s a solid niche for the device, a few surprising features can benefit anyone. The Apple Watch Ultra can represent your focus on fitness and improvement even if you aren’t an extreme adventurer.

Battery Life

The Apple Watch Ultra features up to 36 hours of battery life, which will soon be extended to 60 hours with a future watchOS update that will add low power mode. Compared to previous Apple Watches that sometimes cap out at 18 hours, the Apple Watch Ultra is an impressive improvement. While 18 hours is fine day-to-day, it still has limitations, particularly for users who want to use cellular connectivity.

I enjoy using my Apple Watch’s cellular connectivity when I go for a run or a walk. Like most people, my phone is attached to me 24/7. Except, when I work out, I enjoy not having my bulky phone with me. With previously Apple Watches, I felt severe battery anxiety, often making sure my Series 7 was charged to 100 percent before going on a two to three-hour walk. Cellular connectivity really ate at Apple Watch’s battery life.

The Apple Watch Ultra removes those concerns entirely. It’s fantastic to leave your phone at home or in your car and rely on cellular connectivity for hours without being concerned with battery life. Additionally, suppose you’re a person who forgets to charge their device or wants to explore sleep tracking with your Apple Watch. In that case, the Ultra’s battery life makes it a no-brainer wearable.

Durability

The Apple Watch comes in three materials: aluminum, stainless steel and titanium, and previously also offered gold and ceramic case materials. Each material has its pros and cons. For example, Aluminum is light and cheap but soft and easily damaged. on the other hand, stainless Steel is shiny and durable, making it a fantastic fashion piece, but it’s also heavy and expensive. Titanium, while also expensive, features incredible durability combined with impressive lightness.

The Apple Watch Ultra is built out of corrosive-resistant titanium with water resistance up to 100 metres, double the previous Apple Watch since the Series 2. Although previous Apple Watches are swim-proof, the Apple Watch Ultra is the first watch I feel entirely comfortable swimming with.

The titanium build of the Apple Watch Ultra makes it durable yet light, especially compared to an aluminum Series 8. When buying an Apple Watch Ultra, you can be sure it will not break easily. Whether you find aluminum watches chip and scratched or want a watch just as durable as the stainless steel models, the Apple Watch Ultra makes for a great choice.

49MM Display

The Apple Watch Ultra introduces a new 49MM 2000-nit display. Besides the Apple Watch Ultra, the largest and brightest display is the 45MM 1000-nit display on the Series 8. One nit is equivalent to a single lit candle. It’s surprisingly convenient to have a super bright flashlight attached to your wrist. Also, the large flat display makes for a surprisingly pleasant experience with large easy tap targets.

Action Button

The Action button is a first on the Apple Watch premiering with the Apple Watch Ultra. The Action button is an orange button on the right side of the Ultra. What’s neat about the Action button is it’s customizable. Personally, I enjoy being able to press the Action button to start an outdoor walk. Pressing the Action button during a walk or run can mark segments, and tapping the Action button along with the side button pauses the workout.

Apple Watch Ultra

When using non-segment-focused workouts like with Apple Fitness+, pressing only the Action button will pause the workout. Other possible apps that can be tied to the Action button are running Shortcuts, launching the workout or dive app, starting the stopwatch, and turning on the flashlight.

The Worst Part

Whether it’s the improved battery life or being able to start a workout immediately, the Apple Watch Ultra is a really nice wearable for anyone that finds regular Apple Watches miss the bar on one level or another.

Perhaps the most disappointing part of the Apple Watch Ultra is its aesthetics. I think it’s bulky and ugly compared to the Apple Watch Series 8. It’s also unfortunate that the Apple Watch Ultra only comes in a silver finish.

Apple Watch Ultra

I  previously owned Space Black Stainless Steel Apple Watches and the Graphite Stainless Steel Series 7. Stainless Steel watches, while durable, are also stylish. They look traditional and go great with a suit while still having the amazing features of watchOS. The Apple Watch Ultra misses the mark on aesthetics. It’s functional but far from fashionable.

I hope in a future Apple Watch, we get the improved battery life in a classic design or an Apple Watch Ultra in a darker finish.

Netflix says it’s ‘seriously’ looking into a cloud gaming service

Netflix is “seriously” considering launching a cloud gaming platform, the company has confirmed.

Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt, Mike Verdu, Netflix’s VP of game development, said the company is “very seriously exploring a cloud gaming offering” as an extension to its existing Netflix Games platform on mobile.

He added that the company would “approach this the same way we did with mobile, which is start small, be humble, be thoughtful, and then build out.” Currently, Netflix Games offers a few dozen mobile titles at no additional cost to Netflix subscribers.

According to Verdu, embracing the cloud will “meet members where they are on the devices where they consume Netflix.” Indeed, part of Netflix’s success boils down to its ubiquity, with all sorts of mobile devices, smart TVs and gaming platforms supporting the service.

However, Verdu declined to mention whether Netflix would produce its own controller for the platform, like Google did for its soon-to-be-shuttered Stadia cloud gaming service. Instead, he simply said TV remotes wouldn’t be the sole method of play. Given the widespread usage of controllers from the likes of PlayStation and Xbox, including with Apple TV, it’s possible that Netflix could simply opt to partner with existing companies.

Of course, it’s important to stress that this is all hypothetical, with Netflix not actually confirming concrete plans. On top of that, it’s not clear when the company would even release such a platform. As Verdu noted, Netflix’s approach to gaming has been measured, only offering a handful of mobile-exclusive titles since the platform launched nearly a year ago.

Along the way, it’s been gradually investing more into first-party studios, such as by acquiring Oxenfree developer Night School or opening up a brand-new office in Finland. That said, Netflix acknowledged that “it’s still early days” and “creating a game can take years,” setting expectations for when we might see more from these teams.

It’s also unclear how many people have actually been using Netflix Games. According to an August report from app analytics firm Apptopia, fewer than one percent of overall Netflix subscribers are using the gaming platform. Netflix — a company already notorious for obfuscating data on how well its content performs — hasn’t provided any official data on Netflix Games’ performance. In an October 18th letter to investors, the company simply said “We’re seeing some encouraging signs of gameplay leading to higher retention” while confirming that at least 55 games are coming to Netflix in the future.

And although Stadia never took off, cloud gaming as a whole is certainly on the rise. Newzoo, a reputable analytics firm, published a report earlier this month detailing how the games industry is set to generate approximately $2.4 billion USD (about $3.3 billion CAD) in cloud revenue this year. That works out to a 74 percent increase year-over-year, and roughly 31.7 million consumers paying for cloud gaming.

Other companies have already dipped their feet into the game streaming market. Following beta testing in 2019, Microsoft has been expanding its Xbox Cloud Gaming service (included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) to devices like mobile and smart TVs, while PlayStation offers the ability to stream a variety of games on console. Amazon also has its own streaming platform, Luna, although it’s only available in the U.S.

In related news, Netflix recently pulled back the curtain on its lower cost, ad-supported tier, which is launching in Canada on November 1st.

ArriveCan cost $80,000 to make, but the government spent millions more

Following reports about federal government spending on the controversial ArriveCan app growing to $54 million, a new cost breakdown revealed it cost $80,000 to develop the app.

Per the Globe and Mail, the majority of the expenses can be traced to other related aspects of ArriveCan, just as updating the app, data management, cloud-hosting services and Service Canada call-centre time. The total breakdown is listed below:

  • New releases of ArriveCan (over 70 updates since launch): $8.8 million
  • Service Canada call-centre time: $7.5 million
  • Data management: $5.2 million
  • Indirect costs (like employee benefits and accommodations): $4.9 million
  • Identification of vaccinations: $4.6 million
  • Cloud hosting services: $4.6 million
  • IT systems: $4.5 million
  • Technical support: $4.5 million
  • Contingency: $3.8 million
  • Cyber security: $2.3 million
  • Website accessibility: $1.7 million
  • Internal project management: $1.6 million

The Globe got the figures after a parliamentary committee ordered federal departments to hand over key contracting documents related to ArriveCan by the end of the month. Moreover, the committee will hold at least two meetings about the app and hear from witnesses, including public servants and individuals from GCstrategies, the company that received the majority of federal spending related to work on the app.

This comes after a report earlier this month detailed $42 million in government spending on the app, with another $12.5 million approved to be spent throughout the rest of the year.

The high cost of the app is one of many concerns about ArriveCan, with privacy, the app’s mandatory nature, and ease of use also being top critiques.
