Ryan Reynolds, Remington Group looking to bid billions for Ottawa Senators

First, it was Aviation Gin. Then, it was Wrexham Football Club. Now, famous actor and notable businessman Ryan Reynolds, along with Remington Group, are set to place a massive bid to take over the NHL’s Ottawa Senators and the Canadian Tire Centre.

League sources recently reported to the Ottawa Sun that the Markham-based group headed by Reynolds and real estate mogul Christopher Bratty is planning to bid over $1 billion (approximately over $1.35 billion CAD) for the team and its home arena.

It’s been reported that banker Galatioto Sports Partners have been hired by current owners, the Melnyk family, to sell the team. Both Reynolds and Bratty have stated that they are open to the idea of the Melnyk family keeping a legacy piece of the team. Final binding bids have a deadline set for May 15th. Reynolds and Bratty are looking to secure the deal as soon as possible and have been very open and aggressive about their interest in the hockey team.

Part of the proposal alleges the duo is planning to build a new rink close to downtown Ottawa, complete with a surrounding entertainment district. The two have already met with officials from the National Capital Commission in March 2023 to discuss potential location changes.

The general belief is that the Remington Group is ready to redevelop the space where the Canadian Tire Centre currently resides. The exact plan is unknown at this time, but Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe recently said that he wanted to make sure the current area wasn’t deserted.

If the deal is completed, it’s expected that the Remington Group will meet with FarmBoy CEO Jeff York as well as other Ottawa business heads and be brought aboard as investors. If the group is able to obtain the franchise, Reynolds already understands the importance of the organization playing a big role in the community.

Senators fans will no doubt be hoping the deal will go through. The team last won a conference championship in the 06-07 season, and the coveted Stanely Cup Trophy still alludes to them. However, in just two seasons as co-owner of Wrexham A.F.C., Reynolds was able to help lead the squad to its first league title in 45 years.

Several other groups have met with Senator executives, including:

  • Michael Andlauer, the owner of the OHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs and a minority owner of the Montreal Canadiens.
  • Jeffrey and Michael Kimel, owners of Harlo Capital Group and who recently sold their share in the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • Toronto billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos, who made a $6 billion USD (about $8.1 billion CAD) bid to purchase the NFL’s Washington Commanders.
  • Los Angeles-based producer Neko Sparks was reportedly the highest bidder in the first round at more than $900 million USD (about 1.2 billion CAD).
  • Vivek Ranadivé, the owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings
  • The owner of a hockey publication has also made a bid

It is unclear how many groups will continue into the second round of bidding, perhaps motivating Remington’s recent rush to secure a takeover.

Ryan Reynolds reportedly wants to do a streaming show for the Senators in the vein of his popular Wrexham documentary. Reynolds’ U.S.-based budget wireless provider Mint Mobile was also recently bought by T-Mobile for a reported price of as much as $1.35 billion USD (about $1.86 billion CAD).

Sony’s PlayStation 5 reaches over 38 million unit sales

Sony has released its latest earnings report for its fiscal year ending on March 31st, and in it, the company has confirmed 38.4 million lifetime unit sales of the PlayStation 5.

The earnings report mentions that Sony shipped 6.3 million units of the PS5 in the past quarter, 1.1 million more units than anticipated in the 2022 fiscal year.

The console was released in November 2020 and was difficult to buy in its early months on the market. Thankfully, it’s now much easier to find on store shelves.

Momentum for the PS5 remains strong overall. Highly anticipated exclusive titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are still on track to launch later this year. The console is also tipped to receive a redesign soon if recent rumours are accurate.

Sony’s overall earnings for the fiscal period are equally impressive. The company’s operating profit clocked in at 1.21 trillion yen (roughly $12 billion CAN), compared to a forecasted 1.18 trillion yen ($11.7 billion CAD).

“Toxic” work environment plagues Severance season 2 production

Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed drama series, Severance, is facing significant delays in the production of its second season due to a falling out between two of the show’s writers.

As revealed by Puck News, Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman “ended up hating each other” before the completion of the first season, resulting in a “toxic” work environment.

Erickson, who is a first-time series creator and wrote the pilot episode, and Friedman, a seasoned writer-producer with credits including AMC’s Dispatches From Elsewhere and Fox’s Wayward Pines, had a rocky working relationship from the start. Although Friedman reportedly intended to leave before Season 2, he was convinced by fellow director Ben Stiller to stay after failing to find someone to replace him.

According to Puck News, unfortunately, the toxicity and issues that plagued the production of Season one continue to persist, with script issues and a ballooning per-episode budget cited as the primary concerns.

Apple is already considering two additional seasons for the show, which shows a mysterious company — Lumon Industries, whose employees undergo a procedure that separates their memories between their work and personal lives.

Beau Willimon, the creator of House of Cards, has been quietly brought in to assist with Season two and beyond. Season one of Severance, which debuted in February 2022, ended in April of that year. It’s currently uncertain when the second season would drop.

OnePlus Pad Review: Dressed up with nowhere to go

Reviewing tablets is always challenging.

People use them in various ways, and it’s difficult to gauge what’s worth it, what’s a fair price and if you should even buy one. Everyone needs a laptop, but for many, tablets are non-essential accessories. So figuring out where the OnePlus Pad fits in all this has been a struggle.

OnePlus isn’t one to be left behind, and with the threat of a Pixel tablet looming, the Shenzhen-based company decided to cross the tablet line first. However, as we saw with the launch of the OnePlus Watch a few years ago, it’s not always best to be first.

Undoubtedly, OnePlus fans will be excited to see a tablet of this calibre from the company. But for everyone else, it might be a tough sell without a compelling ecosystem and mature tablet software.

The design is all that

The best part about the OnePlus Pad is its hardware. The speakers are room-filling and clear. They surprised me when I started using the tablet and easily compete with similarly priced iPads. When you push them up above 60 percent, they blast music, and the Atmos tuning provides immersive sound when it’s in front of you. The best compliment I can give is that typically, I connect music in my office to a Sonos, but with the tablet, I just let it play from the device and was more than satisfied.

The screen compliments the speakers and makes watching movies a treat. It’s a variable 144Hz panel, so it modulates from 144Hz – 30Hz depending on what you’re doing. Gaming uses higher refresh rates, while just typing a document uses a lower refresh rate. The colours are nice too, but I found the default ‘Vivid’ option to be a bit too punchy, and all the other options have very subdued whites. I ended up selecting the ‘Real’ option. It’s not a perfect mix, but after a day, I got used to it and felt better using the OnePlus Pad, knowing that it’s recreating colours more faithfully, especially for creative work like photo editing.

The tablet’s rear is a soft brushed metal that feels smooth and comfortable. The pleasing brushed pattern radiates from the camera nicely, even if its finish picks up fingerprints. Overall, it feels quite high-end and stands up nicely against the new iPad.

The awkwardly large camera is centred when you hold it in landscape mode, but if you flip it into portrait orientation, there’s a strong chance you’ll touch it. I appreciated the 5:7 display when typing this review on the OnePlus Pad. It makes it feel more like an iPad when it’s in your hand compared to a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and I appreciate the ample room for getting work done.

Along the tablet’s edge are clicky volume controls and space to magnetically attach the OnePlus Stylo, the company’s stylus. It’s not included in the box and is similar to the 2nd-Gen Apple Pencil. There are several magnets along the top, so you can incorrectly attach the pen easily. However, once you get it on there, the magnets are strong, and the tablet charges the Stylo.

In true OnePlus fashion, the tablet has excellent battery life and can even fast charge using 67-watt chargers in an hour and twenty minutes. To build on this, the company also promised a month of standby time, and while I couldn’t leave it sitting for a month, I was often pleasantly surprised to pick it up after a day or two to see that there was still plenty of juice left.

The OnePlus tablet difference

Since this is OnePlus’ first tablet, a lot of new tech is packed into it to make Android run better on a large screen and compete with other established tablets.

For example, there needed to be a stylus, and the Stylo fills that gap nicely. It functions well with minimal lag, but the glassy surface of the OnePlus pad combined with the plastic tip of the Stylo; the glide is too much for my liking. You can work precisely with it, but for the price of the tablet, I would be shocked if artists decided to grab this over an iPad, which has more apps and accessories, such as paper-like screen protectors.

For writers, OnePlus is selling a new keyboard case, and I like it a lot. For a tablet keyboard, it has sufficient key travel, decent space and a nice tactile typing sound. There’s even a tiny trackpad. The cursor adapts to suit text documents or emulate a finger press. It would be nice to have dedicated function keys, but I’m walking away from this review impressed with this little keyboard. That said, there is an annoying button next to the Alt key that looks like it will open the multitasking menu, but instead, it opens Google Assistant. Overall, I found the tablet adopts some Windows shortcuts, with Alt-Tab being the shortcut for multi-tasking.

The software has a few new multitasking options for split screen and floating windows. If you squeeze on an open window with four fingers, it will shrink to roughly the size of a phone app, but unfortunately, it doesn’t swap into the phone app’s layout. For example, when you shrink down Spotify, the skip forwards and back controls disappear. Apps that are just blown-up versions of their phone counterparts, like Twitter, shrink nicely, but it’s a game of hit-and-miss.

You can also trigger two apps to work side-by-side in the typical Android multitasking menu, which I used much more often than pinning smaller resizable windows. You can also begin a side-by-side session by swiping down from the top of the tablet with two fingers. To push it a bit further, there is a mode that allows you to run two instances of the same app beside each other, but in my testing, the only app I could find to support it is Adobe Acrobat.

There’s also a new feature called Pad Connect that I couldn’t test since my OnePlus 11 and OnePlus 10 Pro can’t update to OxygenOS 13.1 to take advantage of it. In the reviewer’s guide, it looks like a piece of software that forwards notifications from your phone to your tablet, similar to the app Pushbullet. It can also cloud copy/paste and cloud passwords from your phone, as long as the devices are nearby. It’s a useful feature and one I use across Macs and iPhones, so I’m excited to see it come here. Like the Apple version, this appears to be locked to OnePlus devices.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Similar to many other tablets, OnePlus opted to show some recent apps in the taskbar, but unlike Apple and Samsung, you can only access it from the home screen. There are a lot of half-baked features like this. They’re relatively inconsequential, but combined, it shows the immaturity of OxygenOS on tablets. For instance, there’s no system search, and when you’re using the tablet keyboard/trackpad, you can’t go back to the home screen without touching the screen. You can click on the gesture bar on iPad to go home. Adding to this, there’s still the brutal OnePlus shelf from its phones, but it’s not resized and is super laggy whenever you accidentally open it. Weirdly, it also becomes visible on the multitasking screen too.

On top of that, widgets are all mismatched sizes, and if you get them to fit in one orientation, the next time you flip your tablet 90-degrees messes them up. My Screen Time widget even inexplicitly resized itself when I had the keyboard attached.

Asus ROG Ally rumoured to cost $699.99, feature AMD Z1 Extreme chip

It’s been rumoured that the upcoming Asus ROG Ally will cost $699.99 USD (approximately $952 CAD) and feature an AMD Z1 Extreme chip, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

That would put the model at around $51 more than the 512GB Steam Deck, making the handheld gaming PC a serious contender when it releases in May.

The news comes from reliable gadget leaker Roland Quandt, courtesy of SnoopyTech, as well as an early Best Buy screenshot from Wickedkhumz. That’s a lot of sources for a potential leak. Even the product number associated with the ROG Ally connects to the Z1 Extreme model with 512GB of storage.

So, if the Z1 Extreme could cost $699.99, what about an Ally with a vanilla AMD Z1? We don’t know for sure, but to really pen itself a Steam Deck killer, it would have to rival its $399 starting price point.

Specs-wise, the ROG Ally is 11.02 inches wide, 4.37 inches tall and only weighs 1.34 pounds. Features may include a Gorilla Glass DXC-protected screen and could complete half of a full charge in just half an hour.

Although the Steam Deck is currently a popular choice in the gaming community, especially in the world of handhelds, Valve must be keeping an eye on these rumours.

The Asus ROG Ally is set to release on May 11th, when its official price will be revealed.
