8 PlayStation games deserving of a remake

We are living in a world of remakes — everything that is old is new again. Except here’s the thing, not every remake is warranted. While some remaster/remakes are retellings of vital classics that have not been revisited in decades, the gaming industry has seen a recent trend of games that are still relatively new getting the remake treatment.

Amongst some of the worst offenders of this digital offence is console giant PlayStation. In recent months, PlayStation has seemingly made a renewed effort centred on its remake strategy. FirstThe Last of Part I hit PS5s across the world, allowing gamers to dive back into the 2013 Naughty Dog classic. This latest retreading of Joel and Ellie’s story marks the second time the game has received a new console release in less than ten years, prompting some to question why exactly we needed this.

Then rumours began to spring up that yet another PlayStation Studios hit was getting the TLOU Part I treatment. Recent whispers pointed to Horizon Zero Dawn receiving a PlayStation 5 remaster. The 2017 Guerilla Games RPG is only five years old at this point, yet Sony seemingly wants gamers to buy another full-price version of the title on their new next-gen consoles.

So with Sony seemingly tackling all the wrong titles for PS5 re-releases, here are eight PlayStation games that are actually deserving of a full-fledged remake.

Twisted Metal

First up on this dream remake list is Twisted Metal. Back on the PlayStation 1, this car-combat game took over living rooms as gamers battled it out alongside the game’s colourful cast of characters. Twisted Metal TV show wraps filming and moves into post-production | Eurogamer.net

While a revival of the franchise came and went on the PS3, now is the perfect time to bring back the original for the modern day. Twisted Metal is as ready-made for online multiplayer as it comes. So if a remake were to happen, the ability to take on opponents across the world would be a must. It might be a deeper cut than some other names on this list, but one that would be welcomed by longtime PlayStation fans.

God of War (PS2)

Next up, and one of the more likely games to reappear, is God of War. No, we are not talking about Kratos’ latest jaunt through the world of Norse mythology. This would have to be the 2005 PlayStation 2 original. With God of War (2018), Sony Santa Monica captured a contingent of fans who would have never thought to give the series a try.

So, with a remake of the original, Sony could give gamers the chance to take in Kratos’ first adventure going up against the Greek gods. Of course, it would make sense to translate the title to something more akin to the series’ more recent entries. It could do away with the fixed camera Devil May Cry-style action, going to the more modern over-the-shoulder third-person model. And with the future of the franchise a little murky after God of War: Ragnarök, now feels like the perfect time to go back to the beginning.

Sly Cooper

Of Sony’s classic mascot platformers, Sly Cooper is the one that has mostly been left in the dust. While the likes of Crash, Spyro, and Ratchet have come back into the spotlight, the Thievius Racconus has remained in the dark. Aside from a sequel in PS3 and Vita, as well as a collection of the original trilogy, this platformer has not been revisited in quite some time.

The Sly Collection – Sucker Punch Productions

Maybe a full-fledged Sly Cooper 5 isn’t in the card, but why not remake the original and let Sly fans celebrate something? The 3D platformer has found a new niche in recent years, so bring back our boy Sly!

ModNation Racers

This next one will be a little pie-in-the-sky, but you gotta shoot your shoot when you get the chance. The next PlayStation game that needs to be in the remake conversation is ModNation Racers. This oft-forgotten PS3 Mario Kart rip-off took the LittleBigPlanet formula of “Play, Create, Share” and applied it to the world of kart racers. It was surprisingly solid.

ModNation Racers | Eurogamer.net

Aside from abysmal load times, this was a standout multiplayer game for those who gave it a chance. Now with online infrastructure being what it is, and the incredibly fast loads on the PS5, it feels like it might finally be time for ModNation Racers to shine. And we don’t even need a full new game — a remake of the original will totally do.

Uncharted

Before Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us got the PS5 remake treatment, rumors were swirling about a potential modern rebuild of the original Uncharted. The idea was to take Drake’s Fortune (released in 2007) and completely rebuild it from the ground up. And honestly, it doesn’t sound like too bad of an idea.

Uncharted Drake's Fortune PS4 Visual Analysis: Comparison With PS3 Version Reveals Graphical Updates

Uncharted and Naughty Dog have come so far since that first outing on PS3. Remaking Nathan Drake’s first adventure could offer up the chance to implement all the gameplay and graphical improvements found in Uncharted 4Drake’s Fortune is starting to show its age, so an effort like this could help modernize a game that could eventually get lost in time.

Infamous

Another PS3 title that should sit atop PlayStation’s remake hit list is Infamous. This original superhero story was a stellar comic book video game before stellar comic book video games existed. Developer Sucker Punch Productions has moved on to Ghost of Tsushima now, but there is no reason it couldn’t revisit the world of Cole MacGrath.

With the bells and whistles present in the PS5, an Infamous remake could really take advantage of the hardware. Ray-traced reflections would pop with Cole’s electricity-based abilities, and think of the sort of haptic feedback that could be possible in the DualSense when using the Infamous powerset.

Syphon Filter

Younger PlayStation fans may have no idea what Syphon Filter is, but believe me when I say the PlayStation 1 classic is more than deserving of a remake. There is an utter lack of stealth-action games right now. The Hitman series is really the only one carrying that stealth torch at the moment. So why not bring back this Metal Gear Solid-esque PS1 shooter?

The Syphon Filter series has received an age rating | gagadget.com

As of late, PlayStation has prided itself on telling engaging stories with characters gamers buy into. Syphon Filter did that before it was cool, so bringing back Gabe Logan and co. feels like a no-brainer. A fully modern retelling of the original game could be something special, letting us play out our Mission Impossible fantasies on our PlayStation 5.

Metal Gear Solid

And, lastly, is the dream PlayStation remake to end all dream PlayStation remakes, Metal Gear Solid. Yes, this gets a little messy as Konami still owns the Metal Gear franchise, but that first game (and the series as a whole) is so closely tied to Sony’s family of consoles that I am including it here.

PlayStation Memories: Metal Gear Solid - YouTube

Rumors of an MGS remake have been swirling for years at this point with the likes of Bluepoint Games supposedly attached to develop the project. Now, a remake of this first game has already happened in Twin Snakes for the GameCube, but with the title so inaccessible at this point, now is the time to bring it back. Metal Gear Solid is a classic for a reason, and there is a whole generation of gamers who are just waiting to experience it for the first time.

The list is long

This is only the beginning of what could be a near-endless list of games PlayStation should look at for the remake treatment. Fans have made it clear that Sony needs to rethink its remake/remaster strategy. They have a bevy of titles that deserve to be revisited, yet it seems they want to focus on remakes that aren’t necessarily benefitting anyone.

There would be no problem with the console maker going back to the Last of Us or Horizon well if it also meant we were getting things like God of War and Metal Gear Solid. But right now it is only the former with none of the latter.

Netflix tackles password sharing with new ‘Profile Transfer’ feature

Netflix has launched a new feature called ‘Profile Transfer’ to make it easier for people who share accounts to set up those of their own.

With Profile Transfer, you’ll be able to keep settings like personalized recommendations, viewing history, My List and saved games when signing up for your own Netflix membership.

The feature has begun rolling out to all users worldwide, and you’ll receive an email once it becomes available on your account. From there, hover over your profile icon, select ‘Transfer Profile’ and follow the instructions. Profile Transfer can be turned off in account settings at any time.

While Netflix’s official blog post frames this “much requested” feature as being useful for “life changes” like moving or ending relationships, it’s clear the streamer has an ulterior motive with it: to further crack down on password sharing.

Earlier this year, Netflix reported two consecutive quarters of subscriber losses, a significant blow to the streaming giant that was seemingly always growing. Soon after, the company began testing a paywall on password sharing in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. Netflix told MobileSyrup it currently has no plans to expand the test to Canada.

In any case, the company estimates that more than 100 million additional households are sharing passwords. Therefore, it’s clear that Netflix is offering Profile Transfer in an effort to turn some of these people into paying subscribers.

In addition to tackling password sharing, Netflix is looking to curb losses through a new low-cost ad-supported tier, which it’s launching on November 1st in Canada.

Fossil Gen 6 smartwatches getting Wear OS 3 update, no Assistant

Fossil’s Gen 6 smartwatches can start the update to Wear OS 3 starting October 17th. The update has been a long time coming, and even still may prove disappointing for some since it lacks a few things, most notably, Google Assistant.

Fossil detailed the upgrade process and some of the caveats users should consider before updating in a lengthy Reddit post (via Android Police). First, the upgrade process will be a little more involved than a typical watch update. Fossil notes the update won’t be automatic, and instead, users will need to head into the watch settings to update (Settings > System > About > System updates).

More importantly, the Wear OS 3 update will reset the watch, erasing all data. Plus, the update can’t be undone after, which could prove problematic if users encounter any issues. Fossil says the process will require setting up the watch again, except this time with the Fossil Smartwatches app and not the old Google Wear OS app.

Fossil says the ” whole process does take some time and patience” and recommends doing it while watching TV or some other activity, as well as leaving the watch on the charger since there’s a battery hit and “some sluggishness” after updating while apps get updates from Google Play.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the update is technically to Wear OS 3.2, which Fossil notes is the most recent version available to watches using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100 or 4100+ chips. However, Fossil indicates that users shouldn’t notice any major differences compared to watches running another version of Wear OS 3 (such as the Pixel Watch with Wear OS 3.5). There are some minor differences, and some watches sport features and capabilities added by the manufacturer, but for the most part, there doesn’t appear to be a major difference between 3.2 and 3.5.

What’s missing, and what’s new

If that hasn’t scared you off, this might. Fossil also warns that some items will be missing after the Wear OS 3 update. First and foremost, Google Assistant isn’t available on “any Qualcomm 4100-based watches,” which includes Fossil’s Gen 6 line. Fossil said it heard Google is “actively working” to bring Google Assistant to a number of devices, but the company doesn’t have a timeline from Google yet. In the meantime, Fossil does offer Amazon Alexa on the Gen 6, so users won’t be without a digital assistant.

Google Fit also won’t be on the Gen 6 after updating to Wear OS 3, although the app is still available. Fossil says this is because Fit hasn’t been updated to work with the latest Wear Health Services, so the company opted not to preload Fit on the Wear OS.

Finally, for iOS users, some Google apps will be missing too. That includes Google Wallet, although support might come for it in the future. Google Maps also isn’t officially supported for iOS users, but Fossil notes the app appears to work fine once downloaded.

Beyond that, Fossil says the latest third-party apps designed for Wear OS 3 work on its watches. Interestingly, Fossil also notes that “Fitbit seems to be only available on Pixel at this time for other reasons,” suggesting the Fitbit app could come to other Wear OS devices.

Speaking of third-party apps, Fossil lists improved apps as one of the main features of the Wear OS 3 update. Other benefits include better health and wellness tracking thanks to the above-mentioned Wear Health Services, which is more battery efficient than before. There’s a new interface which sounds very similar to the experience you get on Pixel Watch, although Fossil notes it has more access to make changes than before. As mentioned before, there’s a new companion app for phones and plenty of other tweaks and changes too.

Ultimately, if you’ve got a Fossil Gen 6 watch and are considering the Wear OS 3 update, it’s well worth reading through the informative Reddit post. If you have any questions about the update, the post likely answers them.

Peak Design’s ‘Sage’ Everyday is my new favourite iPhone 14 Pro case

When it comes to smartphone cases, you often get what you pay for.

Cheaper cases from accessory makers like Spigen can be awesome, but if you really want a premium case to match your device that likely costs well over $1,000, you’ll need to shell out a bit of extra cash.

This is where Peak Design’s new ‘Sage’ Everyday iPhone 14 Pro case comes in.

Peak Design, which is best known for its camera bags, entered into the smartphone accessory space a few years ago with its Everyday case line. Along with smartphone cases, the company also sells various accessories like a Car Mount, its Out Front Bike Mount, a Wireless Charging Stand, a Mobile Tripod and more that all snap directly into a built-in connector system that’s surprisingly secure.

While the broader accessory ecosystem tied to the Everday Case doesn’t really appeal to me, I’m a huge fan of the company’s smartphone cases. I used its Charcoal case with the iPhone 13 Pro for several months and recently switched over to the Sage version of the same case design with the iPhone 14 Pro.

The case fits snugly on my device and prevents debris from getting inside it, features a sizable rim around the iPhone 14 Pro’s rear camera array for added protection and offers precision cut button covers. More importantly for me, it feels extremely premium, especially its green patterned fabric rear (even more so than the ‘Charcoal’-coloured version).

I often find myself absentmindedly running my fingers along its soft backing. As an added bonus, it doesn’t attract smudges, scratches or grease like other smartphone cases thanks to its fabric backing. That said, you can scuff it if you happen to drop your device on a hard surface (this happened to me with my iPhone 13 Pro Everyday Case), but it’s difficult and far more durable than any case I’ve ever used.

Peak Design sells cases for iPhones ranging all the way back to the iPhone 11 series, though only in Charcoal instead of the new Sage colour and fabric pattern. There’s even a version of the case that includes a built-in loop under its mounting system. The camera accessory maker also sells cases for Samsung’s Galaxy S series devices and Google’s Pixel line.

Peak Design’s Everyday iPhone 14 Pro case costs $55.96 and is available on its website.

YouTube 4K resolution paywall experiment has been ‘fully turned off’

In the first week of October, YouTube scared us by locking 4K resolutions behind the YouTube Premium paywall for some users.

At the time, the limitation didn’t seem to be affecting all users, and might have just been a region-based test.

Now, in a reply to a Twitter user, YouTube says that the 4K paywall was an experiment that has been “fully turned off.” “Viewers should now be able to access 4K resolutions without Premium membership,” writes YouTube.

The platform does not explain why the test was conducted or why it isn’t going through with the change. It’s likely that a ton of negative feedback regarding the paywall caused YouTube to walk back the test

YouTube Premium is priced at $11.99/month or $111.99/annually in Canada and allows users to play videos completely ad-free, in the background, download videos for offline viewing and provides access to YouTube Music Premium.

Pixel 7 series requires fingerprint for Google Wallet

Google’s latest Pixel 7 series has brought back face unlock, but thanks to face unlock sporting a lower security class than fingerprint, some Pixel 7 and 7 Pro users are experiencing unexpectedly declined payments.

Typically when paying with Google Wallet, all your phone requires is that it’s unlocked. That’s not the case with the Pixel 7 series if you use face unlock, however.

Google says that the Pixel 7’s face unlock is rated as a class 1 biometric system. To use payment apps like Google Wallet, a class 3 biometric system like your fingerprint is required, so it appears that unlocking the phone with your face causes transactions to decline.

I mentioned this in my Pixel 7 Pro review, but I didn’t check to see what happens if I tried paying without my fingerprint.

When you’re about to pay, the app should prompt the user to use the fingerprint scanner, or explain why there’s an error, but that’s not the case.

Hopefully, Google pushes out an update for this issue, and either prompts people to use their fingerprint or at least explains why the payment didn’t go through.
