Some Pixel 7 Pro users report encountering scrolling issues with display

As has been the case for the last few years, Google’s latest Pixel flagship seems to be experiencing issues now that it’s in the hands of users. We recently learned that the phone’s display draws more power than it should, and now some users are encountering a display scrolling issue.

According to several Reddit posts, scrolling seems inconsistent with the Pixel 7 Pro, causing the device’s display to randomly shift unexpectedly and, in some cases, not scroll at all.

Android Police’s editors have also run into this issue. They believe that the Pixel 7 Pro’s display is susceptible to quick and minor movements.

There’s a possibility that the Pixel 7 Pro’s 120Hz refresh rate display might be to blame. It’s worth noting that the issue primarily affects the Pixel 7 Pro, with only some Pixel 7 users complaining about the problem. This could be tied to the Pixel 7 only featuring a 90Hz display. Some users have reported that the issue improves after installing and downloading the Pixel 7 Pro’s initial system update.

For what it’s worth, I haven’t run into this problem with the Pixel 7 Pro, and Jon Lamont hasn’t encountered it with the Pixel 7.

Have you encountered this issue with the Pixel 7 Pro? Let us know in the comment section below. For more on Google’s Pixel 7 Pro, check out my review of the handset.

Google updates mobile search results, adds new ‘Sponsored’ tag

Google is rolling out yet another design refresh for mobile search results. However, this time around, the company is putting a larger ‘Sponsored’ tag on paid results, ditching the ‘Ad’ tag that’s been on results for a long time.

The new ‘Sponsored’ tag is larger and displayed more prominently, which should help people tell apart paid and unpaid search results. The tag appears above the paid result in bold font.

As pointed out by other publications, including The Verge and TechCrunch, the change appears to be something of a course correction for Google. The search giant was widely criticized for changes to how it displays paid search results that some said made it difficult to spot paid results.

Those interested in seeing how Google’s paid results have changed over the years should check out the tweet below from the company’s Ads liaison, Ginny Marvin:

Along with the changes to paid search results, Google is updating how results look on mobile. First, each result now lists the website’s name first, and the favicon is larger and easier to see. These changes aren’t huge, but hopefully should make search results easier to read.

Finally, Google says it plans to test a similar experience for desktop search results “soon.”

Firefox Relay gives you a burner phone number to give out online

Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox browser, rolled out a new update to another privacy-focused service called ‘Firefox Relay’ that enables users to hide their real phone number with a burner number provided by Relay.

Firefox Relay, if you haven’t heard of it, is a web app (and browser extension) that lets you generate email “masks” — virtual email addresses that you can hand out to websites instead of your real email. The email masks then forward emails to your real email address, allowing you to maintain a degree of separation between your real email and the services you give an email to (of course, you can also block emails coming from a mask, giving you a great option for anything you suspect will bombard you with spam).

Now, Mozilla has expanded that idea to phone numbers. Through Firefox Relay, people can create a phone number mask to give out online so they can keep their real phone numbers private.

Given that many people use their phone numbers for two-factor authentication (2FA), keeping a private phone number is a good idea. SIM swap fraud, which involves fraudsters stealing your phone number to gain access to 2FA codes, is all too common — minimizing exposure is a great way to help combat it. Of course, the phone number mask is also helpful if you need to give your number to a company you suspect will use it to send you spam (or sell it to someone who will).

How Firefox Relay phone numbers work

Currently, Firefox Relay phone numbers are only available in the U.S. and Canada. To get one, head to ‘relay.firefox.com‘ and then sign up for a free account, or sign in if you already have one. It’s worth noting that you can use Relay for free, but with a limit of five email masks, among other restrictions.

Click the purple ‘Upgrade’ button to view the three Relay tiers. To get a phone number, you’ll need to get the ‘Email & phone protection’ tier, which costs $4.99/mo (or $3.99/mo if you go with annual billing). That gives you access to one phone number mask and generates a number for you to use.

Each month, Relay subscribers get up to 50 minutes of incoming calls and 75 text messages for the phone number mask. Mozilla said in a blog post that it’s exploring ways to expand the feature with outbound calls and texts in the future and bring it to other regions.

Moreover, you will need to verify your actual phone number with Firefox Relay so that it can forward the calls and texts to you. Once set up, you’ll receive calls and texts from the phone number mask on your phone, with no additional apps required. Plus, you can use Relay to manage who can call and text your number to cut down on unwanted spam.

You can learn more about Firefox Relay phone numbers from this blog post, or check out Relay for yourself here.

Ericsson partners with three Montreal universities on AI research project

Ericsson Canada announced a research program led by three Montreal-based universities, École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), Concordia University, Polytechnique Montréal, as well as with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

The research program will explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can help minimize the energy consumption of 5G networks. Moreover, the research aims to help communication service providers reduce their carbon footprint and operational costs.

Ericsson says that data scientists from its Global Artificial Intelligence Accelerator (GAIA) in Montreal will support the three-year research project alongside seven professors and 27 researchers from the three universities. Moreover, Ericsson says it will bring its global expertise in the area to steer the group and push towards industrialized solutions the company can use in its products.

“5G networks are the technological backbone of our society and they represent an opportunity to
digitalize industries and significantly reduce global CO2 emissions,” said Erik Ekudden, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Ericsson, in a press release.

Moreover, the outcomes of the research are expected to help strengthen ECCC’s greenhouse gas modelling solutions for the telecom sector.

Contributions from the Quebec government (through Innovation en Énergie Électrique (InnovÉÉ)) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) will help support the project.

Google Meet auto transcription now available to Education users

After adding Auto-transcription for Google Meet calls for Workspace users, Google is now expanding the feature to its Education users, as reported by Android Police.

The feature, which automatically transcribes a conference or a lecture, can be especially useful for students who need to take down notes to revisit later. Similarly, teachers can also obtain these transcripts and share them with students who might have been absent during the day.

The transcript would be available to the recording user in the form 0f a Google Doc, and will be saved in the “Meet Recordings” folder in Google Drive, similar to meeting recordings. Upon joining, all members of the call will be notified that the meeting is being transcribed, as seen in the screenshot below:

Google announced the feature expansion at Google Cloud Next ‘22 event.

It’s worth noting that the feature is only available for Google Meet users on desktop and laptop in English. The feature will be on by default and can be configured at the group, domain, or organization level.

Original sealed 2007 iPhone expected to sell for over $30,000

When you buy something, you should never open it. Or, at the very least, you should buy two of that product.

Of course, this isn’t a reasonable strategy, but if you did take this approach with Apple’s original 2007 iPhone, you might be able to sell it for $30,000 USD (roughly $41,196 CAD). A new listing from LCG Auctions running until October 16th is attempting to do just that.

As of right now, the current bidding is at $9,496 USD (roughly $13,060 CAD), but Apple Insider estimates that the device will likely sell in the aforementioned higher price range by the time the auction closes.

The OG iPhone is still sealed in its original plastic wrap and is in perfect condition. The smartphone is the 8GB variant, which is essential information to be aware of in case you plan to open it up, ruin its value and actually use the iPhone.

If that’s your plan, it’s worth mentioning that the original iPhone utilized Edge connectivity and never made its way to Canada. It wasn’t until 2008 that Apple’s smartphone arrived north of the U.S. border with the iPhone 3G, and wide adoption didn’t occur until the release of the iPhone 3GS the following year.

You can find the complete listing for the pricey iPhone on LCG Auctions’ website.

For a trip down memory lane, check out this interview MobileSyrup founder Ian Hardy conducted with Jordon Brown, the first person in Canada to buy the iPhone 3G in 2008.
