Google Stadia fans find workarounds to use controller wirelessly on other platforms

On September 29th, Google made the completely unsurprising announcement that it will be shuttering its Stadia game streaming service in January 2023.

Following that news, the platform’s small-but-dedicated fanbase has been pleading for Google to make Stadia’s controller available wirelessly on other platforms. Currently, Bluetooth connectivity is limited to Stadia itself, and the controller can otherwise only be used elsewhere via a wired connection.

While Google says it’s looking into enabling this through a potential firmware update, Stadia fans have taken matters into their own hands in the meantime. One solution, created by engineer Parth Shah, requires users to install Python 3 onto their PC and download version 1.2.0 of his software from GitHub. From there, follow Shah’s guide to download a ZIP file, which contains a URL that will need to be typed into a browser on the Android device connected to the Stadia controller. However, this method is limited as the controller still requires a wired connection to the Android device.

Alternatively, YouTube creator LateStageTech has an app called Wiredless Pro that lets you connect wired controllers to an Android device, which can then be sent wirelessly to a PC. While this does work with the Stadia controller, the trigger buttons aren’t actually recognized, meaning games that require those inputs are effectively out of the question.

Evidently, neither method is ideal. It remains to be seen if and when Google may come up with an official solution within the next three months.

While there were many shortcomings with Stadia, the controller was generally regarded to be one of its strengths. With a solid Nintendo Switch Pro-esque design, it looked and felt quite good to use. What’s more, it was made in collaboration with Google’s Kitchener-Waterloo team, which is a neat factoid for Canadians.

WearOS Phone app for Pixel Watch already available as a downloadable APK

Google is ready to officially unveil the Pixel Watch to the world tomorrow, Thursday, October 6th. While we already know almost everything about the Watch already through a range of leaks and rumours, it will be interesting to see what Google touts its first wearable as.

Now, as shared by Android Police, Google has developed a phone application for Wear OS, and the app is already available to download from APKMirror.

The app is titled ‘Phone by Google (Wear OS)’ will likely make it easier for Google to send updates related to the calling screen on the Watch without having to push out a WearOS update. Not much is known about how the app will function since its support seems to be limited to the Pixel Watch.

Elsewhere, as noted by 9to5Google, the Fitbit mobile application already has an option to let you pair your Pixel Watch with the app. Clicking on the Pixel Watch on the pairing screen redirects you to the ‘Google Pixel Watch app’ in the Play Store. The application isn’t live on the Play Store yet, so you’ll be greeted with a ‘Something went wrong’ screen. It’s interesting to note that the pairing option is only visible on the Fitbit Android app, and not on the iOS app. Previous leaks have indicated that the Pixel Watch will not work with iOS devices, and will only be compatible with Android phones running Android 8 or higher, so that might be the reason for Pixel Watch pairing being omitted from the iOS Fitbit app.

Learn more about the leaks and rumours about the Pixel Watch and the Pixel 7 series and what we expect to see at the event tomorrow via the video below:

Big Three split on adding credit card processing fees

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus found itself on the receiving end of ire from Canadians over its plan to add credit card processing fees to customer bills starting in October.

However, Telus isn’t the only Canadian carrier, and so far, the Big Three seem split on adding these fees. Rogers, for example, doesn’t have plans to add a fee.

“With regards to a credit card processing fee, we have no plans to move ahead with a fee like this at this time,” a Rogers spokesperson told MobileSyrup.

Bell, however, did not respond to MobileSyrup’s questions in time for publication.

Anecdotally, I’m a Bell Mobility customer and haven’t received any notice of incoming credit card fees. Of course, that doesn’t mean the company has no plans to add these fees.

Telus already sent notifications of the change to customers as well as filed a request with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to add the fee for select customers using specific, CRTC-regulated services — the majority of Telus customers will be subject to the fee regardless how the CRTC responds to the request.

Which, on that note, a CRTC response was expected in 45 business days but has not yet arrived.

Telus’ application received thousands of interventions from frustrated customers, and it filed a reply with the CRTC defending the plan, calling the credit card fee “just and reasonable.”

The credit card processing fee stems from a lawsuit against credit card companies over processing fees charged to merchants. Credit card companies previously barred merchants from passing the fees to customers, but starting October 6th, businesses will be able to charge customers who pay with credit cards a fee to recoup those costs.

It’s worth noting that none of this applies in Quebec due to the province’s consumer protection laws, although lobbying groups are already trying to get Quebec to change that.

CRTC staff get scam emails from fraudster posing as Ian Scott

Ian Scott, chairperson of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), revealed earlier this week that a scammer was able to fake his e-mail address, and attempted to defraud and extort money from CRTC staff.

In classic scamming fashion, the fraudster sent e-mails to Scott’s staff, asking them “to go out and buy thousands of dollars of gift cards,” as reported by The Globe and Mail.

The information came to light when Scott informed the Commons Industry and Technology (INDU) committee about the fraud attempt. INDU is currently investigating a separate incident involving fraudulent calls.

“They are very quick. Some of them are very sophisticated,” said Scott. “I have had employees with emails from me apparently. I don’t usually ask people to go out and buy thousands of dollars of iTunes cards.”

Further, according to Patricia Valladao, a CRTC spokesperson, “CRTC staff have been targeted by phishing campaigns in the past,” though none of the attempts have been successful at defrauding any of the staff. Since then, the CRTC has put some safeguards in place, like identifying if emails originate from outside the CRTC, awareness campaigns for staff and upgraded IT security tools.

Scott said he is working with the RCMP, the telecom industry, cyber spies at the Communications Security Establishment, and the Canada Revenue Agency to warn Canadians about such frauds.

In the recent past, similar scams have taken advantage of timely events. For example, in July, after Rogers’ widespread outage, scammers were quick to send customers fake refund links to ‘compensate’ for the outage. The same goes for scams relating to fraudsters posing as the CRA.

It is important for Canadians to be vigilant and not click on links or websites that guarantee money. The CRA or other Canadian organizations would never ask you to go out and buy gift cards for payments.

Tesla to phase out ultrasonic sensors in favour of camera-only Autopilot

On October 4th, Tesla announced that it plans to phase out ultrasonic sensors (USS) in favour of a camera-only ‘Tesla Vision’ driver assist system (via Electrek).

This comes roughly a year and a half after the Austin, Texas-based company announced that it will ditch radar sensors in the Model 3 and Model Y in favour of camera-focused pure vision technology. Now, Tesla is removing USS from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, with Model S and Model X to follow in 2023.

The original suite of Autopilot sensors for Tesla vehicles included front-facing radars, eight cameras, and ultrasonic sensors around the vehicle. With last year’s change, Tesla ditched the front-facing radars and is now phasing out ultrasonic sensors in favour of cameras exclusively.

“The ultrasonic sensors were primarily used for short-range object detections in applications like auto-park and collision warnings,” says Electrek, and according to Tesla, its new ‘vision-based occupancy network’ (currently available in Full Self-Driving Beta) will replace the inputs generated by USS.

While Tesla transitions towards a ‘camera-only’ autopilot approach, vehicles without USS sensors (those delivered during or after October 2022) will temporarily not have access to specific features, including Park Assist, Autopark, Summon, and Smart Summon.

Over the coming months, Tesla intends to release over-the-air updates to transition the above-mentioned features to its ‘camera-only’ approach.

“Given the incremental improvements already achieved with Tesla Vision, and our roadmap of future Autopilot improvements and abilities, we are confident that this is the best strategy for the future of Autopilot and the safety of our customers,” says Tesla.

DDoS attack on Overwatch 2 results in never-ending match queues

Despite releasing yesterday, Overwatch 2 players haven’t been able to get into matches due to an ongoing DDoS attack on the title’s servers.

According to dozens of social media posts, eager Overwatch 2 players are stuck behind a queue with hundreds and sometimes thousands of players in front of them. In a recent tweet, Blizzard president Mike Ybarra tweeted that the title is experiencing server issues and said the developer is currently working to fix the problem.

However, Ybarra followed up with another tweet explaining that the game is suffering from a “mass DDoS attack” on its servers. Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller says that the studio will “work throughout the night” to get Overwatch 2 back up and running.

While Overwatch 2 is very similar to its predecessor, it reduces the team size from six to fix (removing one tank character), features new maps, heroes and other additions like a ping system. Beyond the ongoing DDoS attack, the title also suffers from glitches tied to items and in-game currency disappearing.

Free-to-play shooter Overwatch 2 is available on PlayStation, Xbox and desktop. For more on Overwatch 2, check out Dean Daley’s hands-on with the title.

It should be noted that Activision Blizzard is facing ongoing legal action related to reported work culture issues. Specifically, the gaming giant was accused in a July 2021 lawsuit of fostering a toxic “frat boy” culture at its U.S. studios in which many employees, particularly women, dealt with harassment, gender discrimination, unequal pay and other forms of mistreatment. Bobby Kotick, the company’s CEO, has specifically come under fire for allegedly working to cover up these reports and has faced calls to resign, yet he still leads the company. Recently, Axios reported that Activision Blizzard has also been hit with two setbacks related to its legal battle with California over these workplace misconduct allegations.

PlayStation Stars loyalty program is live in Canada, but it’s pretty lacklustre

PlayStation’s brand-new loyalty program, PlayStation Stars, has launched in Canada.

You can sign up for PlayStation Stars for free in the PS App on Android and iOS. The option will appear on the home page right between your PSN name and the notifications icon — it’s a little star wrapping around the PS logo.

PS Stars logo

On paper, the program seems like a sound concept, as it lets you earn points that can be redeemed towards games, PSN wallet funds and digital collectibles. Various sets of limited-time objectives called “campaigns” will be run periodically, and completing these will earn you specified rewards, like extra points or a digital collectible. You can also get points by making various game purchases.

There are a few catches, however, starting with the fact that the entire PS Stars experience is currently exclusive to the PS App. In other words, there’s no way to access it from your actual PlayStation 4 or 5 console. But there’s more.

Points

First, you need to be a PlayStation Plus member to collect points on eligible game purchases, which automatically limits its audience. What’s more, the points distribution is… odd. For example, one of the current campaigns, ‘PlayStation Store Picks,’ gives you just 50 points for purchasing one of six games: NBA 2K23Saints RowTMNT CollectionThe Last of Us Part 1Inscryption and Madden NFL 23. The point redemption breakdown, meanwhile, is 1,250 points = $5.00 CAD and 6,250 points = $25.00. In this way, 50 points aren’t worth much.

However, while it’s not immediately clear in the app, you can earn points in other ways, like by making select pre-orders. For example, a U.S. user apparently earned 758 points by pre-ordering The Callisto Protocol, the new horror game from the creators of Dead Space. All in all, it appears to be about four percent back on purchases, which is certainly better than it initially seems.

PS Stars pointsThat said, it takes a lot of points to get games. Take The Quarry, Supermassive’s spiritual successor to Until Dawn. On PS5, it normally costs $89.99, but with PS Stars, you can snag it for 17,500 points. PS4/PS5 indie gems Hades and Cult of the Lamb, meanwhile, each cost $33.49 or 6,250 points.

By comparison, Microsoft Rewards, which includes perks for Xbox gamers, is free for everyone and has a far wider variety of ways to earn points than PS Stars. Nintendo’s Gold Points system, meanwhile, automatically gives everyone five percent back on most eShop purchases — no additional program membership is required.

Collectibles

PS Stars Collectibles

Overall, PS Stars certainly seems to place a heavy emphasis on digital collectibles. When the program was first announced, people wondered if these were NFTs, the controversial and ostensibly worthless digital-only items, but Sony was quick to shut this down, noting that they can’t be traded or sold. Instead, these collectibles all have different rarities attached to them, not unlike a PlayStation Trophy. Further, PlayStation Stars’ leveling system is centred almost entirely around digital collectibles:

  • Tier 1 Milestones — Joined the program and started completing campaigns
  • Tier 1 Benefits — Digital collectibles through completing campaigns, one celebration collectible
  • Tier 2 Milestones — Bought one full game from the PlayStation Store and earned one Uncommon trophy
  • Tier 2 Benefits — Level 2 celebration collectible and access to all level 1 collectibles.
  • Tier 3 Milestones — Bought two full games from the PlayStation store and earned 32 Uncommon trophies
  • Tier 3 Benefits — Level 3 celebration collectible and a birthday collectible
  • Tier 4 Milestones — Bought four full games from the PlayStation Store and earned 128 Uncommon trophies
  • Tier 4 Benefits — Celebration collectible, all Level 1-3 collectibles and “chat priority routing”

As you can see, nearly every single perk is tied to these digital collectibles. The only one that isn’t, “chat priority routing,” has proven to be (justifiably) controversial. Essentially, this means that PlayStation’s best customer service is locked behind a paywall — an incredibly anti-consumer business move. It’s also worth noting that a datamine of the PS App pointed to a mysterious fifth, invite-only Tier, although that hasn’t been confirmed.

Looking past that, the digital collectibles themselves are rather strange. Once you earn one, you can view it as a little 3D model under the ‘Collectibles’ tab. For signing up, you’re given a PlayStation-branded ‘Star Gazer Telescope,’ which Sony says is ‘Common.’ You can then place these on a virtual display case, which has a few different background options. (I picked one that’s clearly inspired by God of War: Ragnarök, although the app strangely doesn’t even mention that.)

And that’s pretty much it. You have a display case with these weird collectibles that just… sit there. PlayStation says you have the option of showing your collection to other adult PlayStation Network users, but otherwise, your ability to flaunt your collection is limited.

Elsewhere, the only other digital collectibles currently up for grabs via points redemption are two Ape Escape-themed dioramas. You can also complete a few campaigns to unlock a ‘PlayStation Tech Demo Tyrannosaurus Rex’ (play any PS4/PS5 game), a ‘Novelty Toy Fight Trophy’ (play a match in Street Fighter V, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 11 or Tekken 7) and a ‘Sony Chord Machine’ (the objectives of which are unclear as part of an apparent puzzle to solve).

Ultimately, it doesn’t hurt to sign up for PS Stars, given that it’s free. If you’re someone who regularly purchases games on PSN, it might be worth just having to get some cash back. But otherwise, there’s not much to the program, and the fact that it paywalls top-tier customer service just makes it feel unsavoury.

Samsung launches more eco-friendly screen repair option Canada

Samsung has launched a new, more environmentally friendly screen repair option in Canada.

Starting October 4th, 2022, the South Korean tech giant’s new ‘LCD Glass Panel Replacement Program‘ will offer a more sustainable, cost-effective option to repair broken screens by replacing damaged LCD glass instead of the complete LCD module.

A Samsung spokesperson told MobileSyrup that the LCD component consists of the LCD module, glass panel, and frame. The new repair solution will allow Samsung to repair the glass panel if it cracks but reuses the LCD module and frame. Samsung says in most cases, only the glass panel is cracked and the module and frame aren’t damaged.

Samsung says the new program will only be for select Galaxy S and Note series devices “for now,” with plans to make it available to more devices in the future. Supported devices and LCD glass replacement costs are as follows:

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra – $309 ($140 savings compared to out-of-warranty screen repair)
  • Galaxy S22+ – $356 ($121 savings)
  • Galaxy S22 – $345 ($121 savings)
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra – $492 ($170 savings)
  • Galaxy S21+ – $358 ($127 savings)
  • Galaxy S21 – $340 ($117 savings)
  • Galaxy S20 Ultra – $431 ($141 savings)
  • Galaxy S20+ – $449 ($189 savings)
  • Galaxy S20 – $449 ($187 savings)
  • Galaxy S10+ – $396 ($149 savings)
  • Galaxy S10 – $399 ($154 savings)
  • Galaxy S10e – $299 ($114 savings)
  • Galaxy Note20 Ultra – $496 ($178 savings)
  • Galaxy Note20 – $354 ($123 savings)
  • Galaxy Note10+ – $489 ($125 savings)
  • Galaxy Note10 – $415 ($116 savings)

You can view more details about Samsung screen repair costs here. That site also includes some caveats around qualification for LCD Glass Replacement repairs, such as that devices can have a damaged frame or other hardware failures. Samsung devices with swelling batteries also won’t qualify for LCD Glass Replacement repairs, which may be particularly troubling for some people with older models.

Samsung says focusing on replacing damaged LCD glass and not replacing the entire LCD module will “help minimize the environmental impact of completing repairs” by reducing carbon emissions through minimizing parts production.

Finally, Samsung says it offers repair pick-up service at customers’ homes or businesses at no extra cost. Alternatively, customers can get the service at Samsung Experience Stores or ‘Exclusive Service Centres.’

Rogers’ new credit card gives you five days of Roam Like Home

Rogers has a new credit card offering cash back rewards and bonus earnings when redeeming cash back for select Rogers purchases, like paying a phone bill.

Rogers Bank’s new ‘Rogers Connections Mastercard’ offers cash back on “everyday purchases,” with two percent unlimited cash back on “eligible U.S. dollar purchases” and one percent unlimited cash back on other eligible purchases. Plus, customers who apply now for a Connections Mastercard will get a welcome bonus of 10 percent cash back for the first three months (up to a value of $100, according to a Rogers press release about the card).

Moreover, the Rogers Connections Mastercard offers a 30 percent bonus when customers redeem earned cashback for Rogers phone upgrades, and accessories, or when paying a monthly Rogers bill.

Along with the cashback bonus, the Rogers Connections Mastercard offers five free ‘Roam Like Home‘ days at no cost each year. Currently, Rogers charges $12/day for Roam Like Home when travelling to the U.S., and $15/day for international locations, up to a maximum of 20 days per billing cycle (Rogers actually increased the Roam Like Home price in March — remember the wild days of 2014 when Roam Like Home cost $5/day for up to 10 days per billing cycle?).

The Rogers Connections Mastercard has no annual fee for the first year but does cost $29 annually after the first year. Rogers does offer an “ongoing annual fee rebate” for customers who pay their monthly Rogers bill online with the Rogers Connections Mastercard.

Rogers’ new credit card comes ahead of the October 6th change to credit card fees, which will see Canadian businesses able to apply surcharges when customers pay with credit cards to cover the cost of credit card processing.

MobileSyrup asked Rogers if the company planned to add credit card surcharges to customer bills as Telus did, and whether it would exempt the Connections Mastercard from those fees. A Rogers spokesperson said that “with regards to a credit card processing fee, we have no plans to move ahead with a fee like this at this time.”

You can learn more about the Rogers Connections Mastercard on the Rogers Bank website. It joins the Rogers World Elite Mastercard and the Fido Mastercard.
