Nova Scotia’s Premier says carriers offered ‘poor participation’ during Hurricane Fiona

Nova Scotia’s Premier is calling out Canada’s telecommunications companies on their “poor participation and support” before, during, and after Hurricane Fiona.

Premier Tim Houston shared details in a letter sent to François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.

The letter states the Province’s Emergency Management Office (EMO) began preparing for Fiona’s landfall one week before it arrived and requested representatives from its infrastructure partners be sent to the Provincial Coordination Centre.

“Given the expected impacts on power and telecommunications, having a representative attend in person was imperative for optimal collaboration.”

Initial requests were left unanswered. Complaints from EMO led Bell to send one representative who was present in person for two days before working virtually. Eastlink, Rogers, and Telus participated virtually but failed to send a representative in person following the initial response. It was only after three days of public and media pressure did representatives attend in person.

Houston says cellular and landline services have improved, but some cell towers are running on generators, and reliable service isn’t available in Cape Breton.

While other key companies, including Nova Scotia Power and the Canadian Red Cross, were willing to participate in press briefings to share updates with residents, telecom companies were not. When a rep is made available, they’re unable to answer questions, he said.

“I’m asking you, as the Minister who oversees these companies, to consider all potential legislative and regulatory means to hold telecommunications companies accountable for participating in emergency planning, preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery to the fullest extent possible,” Houston concludes in his letter.

Bell released the following statement in response to Houston’s statement.

Toronto Freedom Mobile location engulfed in flames

A Freedom Mobile location was engulfed in flames, and it was all captured on TikTok.

Set to the tune of Super Freaky Girl by Nicki Minaj, the 14-second video posted on September 27th by @bitchonarrival shows the storefront of a Freedom Mobile location on Church Street going up in flames.

It’s not clear if anyone was injured in the blaze, and Freedom has stayed quiet on its social media accounts. Google lists the store location as temporarily closed.

But after looking through the comments, I can confirm the telecom drama lived on.

“Rogers, Bell, and 4 others liked this,” wrote one user under the video. “Freedom mobile is what keeps the big guys on their toes,” read another comment.

All jokes aside, really hoping no one was injured in the fire.

You can check out the video for yourself here.

Amazon’s new QLED Fire TV Omni series can detect when you walk in

After entering the TV market last year with the Fire TV Omni and 4-Series sets, Amazon is looking to expand its presence in the big-screen industry. At its recent hardware event, the retailer announced a new Fire TV Omni QLED Series, its first TV series to feature what the company is calling a ‘Fire TV Ambient Experience.’

The new series comes in two sizes — 65-inch and 75-inch — with both TV sizes featuring a 4K QLED display and up to 96 dimming zones to heighten contrast, provide subtle tones and unlock details in dark areas of a scene, alongside support for Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ Adaptive.

Other new features include adaptive brightness, which optimizes the screen brightness through a built-in sensor that detects the lighting in your room, and most importantly, the ‘Fire TV Ambient Experience,’ which uses built-in presence sensors to detect when a person enters the room and converts the screen to look like an Echo smart display (as seen in the screenshot below) that shows you helpful information like weather and music suggestions, photo galleries, news, notes, smart home controls and several familiar Echo widgets.

The TV features an Ethernet port, alongside three HDMI 2.0 and one HDMI 2.1 ports, which means you can have all your streaming devices and consoles connected to the TV at once.

Amazon’s new Fire TV Omni QLED Series is available to pre-order now in 65-inch and 75-inch sizes for $1,069.99 CAD and $1,499.99 CAD, respectively. Shipping begins on October 27th. Learn more about the TV here.

Amazon’s hardware event was full of surprises. Follow the links to read about other new releases, including the 3rd-gen Fire TV Cube, the second-gen Echo Auto, the Halo Rise and the 5th-gen Echo Dot.

2nd-gen Echo Auto can call for help if you get stranded on the road

Amazon announced the 2nd-gen version of its Echo Auto for vehicles during its hardware event on Wednesday, September 28th.

Echo Auto first surfaced in 2018 and was released in Canada in 2020. The new Echo Auto is slimmer and smaller than its predecessor and ships alongside an adhesive mount to attach it anywhere in your vehicle.

The device features five built-in microphones to allow Echo Auto to hear you over regular on-the-road noises, alongside new in-vehicle features like voice roadside assistance that connects you with an agent if your vehicle breaks down or runs out of gas. “Ambient technology is at its best in environments where people are focused on other tasks, and nowhere is that more important than in the car,” said Heather Zorn, Amazon’s vice president for Alexa. “Voice can minimize distractions and help you keep your eyes on the road so you can focus on the fun of driving.”

A Quick Charge 3.0 adapter allows users to charge their phone from the device, and Alexa connectivity means you can control your smart home devices like your home lights and thermostats while on the road.

Learn more about the second-gen Echo Auto here.

The new Echo Auto device costs $54.99 in the U.S. and is available to pre-order today and starts shipping next month. As of right now, the device isn’t coming to Canada. The first-gen Echo Auto came to Canada two years after its initial release, so Amazon might follow a similar release schedule for the second-gen device.

Amazon debuts third-generation Fire TV Cube

Amazon has upgraded its Fire TV family.

The company’s third-generation Fire TV Cube is 20 percent more powerful than its predecessor, thanks to an octa-core 2.0 GHz processor. It supports cinematic 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, HDR and immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

The Cube includes support for Wi-Fi 6E and an HDMI input port, allowing users to control live TV, cable boxes, and on-demand streaming. An additional USB port also allows users to connect to video calls through Alexa Communications.

While the new Fire TV Cube can be controlled hands-free, customers can also opt for the Alexa Voice Remote Pro. It has two new customizable buttons to create shortcuts, as well as motion-activated backlighting.

The ‘remote finder’ feature can be particularly handy for homes that frequently misplace the remote. When the voice command “Alexa, find my remote,” is used, a ring plays out.

Canadians can pre-order the Fire TV Cube for $189.99 and the Alexa Voice Remote Pro for $44.99.

Amazon’s Halo Rise tracks sleep patterns by observing you breathe

At its fall hardware event, Amazon announced a new sleep tracking gadget that doesn’t even need to be in direct contact with you overnight.

The new Halo Rise is designed to sit on the side table adjacent to your bed and track your sleep cycles with its low-energy sensors and machine learning to detect micro-movements that you make while breathing. The data is analyzed and converted into sleep stages, and will reflect in the Halo application. The company says it “trained and validated the device’s sleep algorithm against the clinical gold standard for sleep analysis,” called overnight polysomnography, which is essentially a test doctors perform to track and observe sleep patterns.

It’s worth noting that Halo Rise doesn’t feature a built-in camera or microphone.

In addition to sleep, the Halo Rise also tracks environmental conditions in your room, like the temperature and humidity, that could be influencing your sleep. The data Halo Rise collects goes straight to the cloud, in an enrypted manner, and stays encrypted, until it is deleted in 10 days. The company also said that it won’t be selling any of the data for marketing or ads.

Further, the device also acts as an alarm clock and a SAD light to simulate sunlight, and can be paired with your Echo device to gather verbal information about your sleep.

The Halo Rise costs $139.99 USD (roughy $190 CAD) and starts shipping later this year in the United States. MobileSyrup has reached out to Amazon regarding Canadian pricing and availability.

Amazon announces fifth-gen Echo Dots that can double as Eero mesh Wi-Fi range extenders

At its recent hardware event, Amazon announced a range of new Echo devices, alongside upgrades to older models.

In a briefing, the online retailer made it clear its vision for its Echo line is to create an ambient experience for users that works behind the scenes and continues to become more intuitive over the years.

One of the ways Amazon is improving its older technology and making it more intuitive is by adding new features. The company announced that its Echo Show 15 and Echo Studio are gaining a new custom-built Spatial Audio processing technology and frequency range extension to enhance stereo sound with digital audio processing that aims to make audio feel more immersive, with improved mid-range clarity and deeper bass.

The feature is currently limited to the Echo Show 15 and Echo Studio and will roll out automatically. Amazon also said it will roll out the fuctionality to other compatible Echo devices in the future.

The Echo Studio and the Echo Show 15 are available to order from Amazon for $259.99 and $329.99, respectively.

New fifth-gen Echo Dot and Echo Dot Clock

The main attraction of the New fifth-gen Echo Dot is that has a redesigned audio architecture with a full range driver that outputs double the bass of its predecessor, while maintaining the same compact, spherical form factor.

It includes a new temperature sensor that can be utilized to automatically turn on a fan or the air conditioner when the temperature exceeds a pre-set threshold, or, similarly, turn on the heating when it gets too cold inside. A built-in accelerometer brings new tap gesture controls to pause/play music, kill alarms or timers, or end a call.

It’s powered by Amazon’s custom four-core AZ2 Neural Edge processor (the same as the Echo Show 15) for near-instant on-device speech processing, quick register taps, and ultrasound motion detection.

The new fifth-gen Echo Dot Clock includes all of the audio, sensor and processor upgrades as the new Echo Dot, and sets itself apart with its dot technology that can display time, timers and temperature. With the New Echo Dot Clock, Amazon has upgraded its LED to high-density dot technology that offers support for more information visibility. This allows the Echo Dot Clock to display the name of a song that’s playing or its artist, the weather, a specific calculation, calendar event times and more when you ask Alexa for specific information.

Both the new Echo Dots now feature Eero mesh technology, which means the smart speakers can double as mesh Wi-Fi extenders, and add up to 1,000 square feet of coverage to your existing eero mesh Wi-Fi network.

The fourth-gen Echo will also receive a software update on October 20th to roll out Eero mesh Wi-Fi extender capabilities, while the fourth-gen Echo Dot and Echo Dot with clock would receive the same over-the-air update in the coming months.

The fifth-gen Echo Dot is available to pre-order today in ‘Deep-sea Blue,’ Charcoal’ and ‘Glacier White’ colourways for $69.99. Shipping begins next month.

The fifth-gen Echo Dot with Clock is available to pre-order today in ‘Cloud Blue’ and ‘Glacier White’ colourways for $79.99. Shipping begins next month.

Echo Dot Kids makes its way to Canada

Amazon released the first Echo Dot Kids smart speaker back in 2018. Subsequent upgraded versions of the same came out in 2019 and 2020, but none of them made it to Canada. Considering that the company’s childrens’ Fire tablets have been available in the nation for a while now, it didn’t make sense to hold off the kid-friendly smart speakers.

This time around, Amazon is ready to let the Canadian youth join in on the fun. The online retailer announced that it is releasing the Echo Dot Kids in Canada in cool-looking Owl and Dragon designs, with Alexa’s voice transformed to talk like an Owl or a Dragon.

The audio transformation feature will be limited to Amazon Kids+. “Kids can hear greetings, jokes, facts, songs, and more from the perspective of an Owl or Dragon, transforming Alexa into a fun, immersive experience,” said Amazon, while parents have access to intuitive parental controls to set language and explicit term filters, filter for explicit songs, daily usage limits and check usage activity from the Amazon Parent Dashboard.

It’s worth noting that the device comes with a two-year warranty and a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ at no additional cost.

The Echo Dot Kids is available to pre-order today in Dragon and Owl designs for $79.99. Shipping begins next month.

New Google Search features help you ask the right questions

At its annual Google Search On event, Google showcased its efforts to make Search more natural and intuitive for users, with the company’s theme being to ‘search outside the box,’ and ‘Organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.’

The tech giant outlined about upcoming developments for Google Search, Google Maps and Google Shopping.

Google Search

Multi-Search Near Me: Announced at Google I/O 2022, the multi-search near me feature allows users to take photos of objects like food, supplies, clothes and more, and add the phrase “near me” in the Google app to get search results showcasing local businesses, restaurants or retailers that carry that specific item. Google runs the image through its database and cross-references it with several photos, reviews and web pages to deliver accurate nearby results. The feature is rolling out in English in the U.S. this fall.

Translate with lens: According to Google, translations with Google Lens are used roughly one billion times per month in more than 100 languages. Originally, the way the feature worked was that it would translate the text on an image and add it on top of the photo as extra text. This would block or distort the image behind the text. Now, with a new machine learning tool called ‘Generative Adversarial Networks’ (the same tool used in Pixel phones for Magic Eraser), Google Lens can translate the text, and blend it back into the background image without distorting it, making the image retain its natural look.  See the screenshot below for reference. ‘Lens AR translate’ is rolling out globally later this year.

Shortcuts: Launching today, September 28th, you’ll see some of Google’s most helpful tools and shortcuts, including translate, ‘shop your screenshots,’ ‘hum to search,’ and more, displayed right on top of the Google app (under the Search bar). The shortcut feature is rolling out for the iOS application in English in the United States.

Easier to ask questions: Google is making it easier for users to ask the questions they intend to ask. When you start typing a query, Google will now suggest keywords or topics that might help you better craft your questions. “Say you’re looking for a destination in Mexico. We’ll help you specify your question — for example, ‘best cities in Mexico for families’ — so you can navigate to more relevant results for you,” says Google. The highlighted keywords, and the subsequent results will be relevant to your query, and will include content from creators available online. “For topics like cities, you may see visual stories and short videos from people who have visited, tips on how to explore the city, things to do, how to get there and other important aspects you might want to know about as you plan your travels,” says Google.

Additionally, the search results you’ll see will come in various formats. Depending on the relevancy of your query, the results can be shown as text, images, videos or a combination of those formats. This new format of asking questions on Google Search will roll out in the U.S. in the coming months.

Google Maps

Google intends to make Maps more visual and immersive, and it is starting off with new features that aim to make you feel like you’re physically in the location that you are searching.

Neighbourhood Vibe: Neighbourhood vibes allow you to quickly check popular locations in a given area, like famous restaurants, cafes, museums and other landmarks that people search for. Results appear alongside helpful photos and information right on the map. The feature is launching globally on Android and iOS in the coming months.

Landmark Aerial View and Immersive view: The upcoming feature allows users to see photorealistic aerial views of up to 250 key global landmarks like the CN Tower, Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Tower and more. Being able to check out the aerial view allows you to also soak in the landmark’s surroundings, making it easy for you to decide whether you want to visit said location or not.

Immersive View, on the other hand, works in tandem with Aerial View, and allows users to plan their trip ahead of time by checking what the weather, traffic and crowd will be like at a given place on a given day and time.

For example, you may search for the CN Tower in Toronto and see that finding parking around the landmark is a pain, so you decide not to go or take public transport.

Landmark Aerial View is rolling out globally on Maps today, September 28th, whereas Immersive View is launching in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo in the coming months.

Live View: First released three years ago, Google’s Live View is an Augmented Reality tool that overlays walking directions over your live camera feed. All you need to do is simply lift and point your phone to find directions, and essential places like shops, ATMs and restaurants. The feature has long been available in Canada, and will start rolling out in London, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo in the coming months.

Eco-Friendly Routing expanding to developers: Google launched its Eco-Friendly Routing feature for Google Maps in Canada earlier this year. The feature allows users to analyze the estimated carbon emissions of their planned route and suggests alternative directions that would consume less fuel, while taking traffic, road steepness and other variables into account.

Developers from companies will now have the option to add the feature to their company apps, allowing companies like SkipTheDishes, Uber Eats, and Amazon delivery drivers to select their engine type and find best routes and directions for fuel and energy efficiency. The feature will be available in Preview later this year for developers in the U.S., Canada and select countries in Europe where Eco-Friendly Routing is available.

Google Shopping

Google is introducing new tools for Shopping that aim to help users discover things they’ll like by providing visual cues, insights about products and services, and filters to trim down options.

3D shopping for shoes: Some websites allow users to take a 3D look at shoes from different angles. According to Google, people engage with 3D images almost 50 percent more than static ones.

Websites need to have this feature built-in, and some of the smaller businesses don’t have the resources to do that. This is where Google comes in. The company says it can now automate 360-degree spins of shoes using just a handful of photos, essentially the ones already available on the merchant’s website, allowing users to check out shoes in 3D view, regardless of the page offering the feature. This feature will be available in Google Shopping in the U.S. in early 2023.

Shopping Insights: The new feature will provide noteworthy insights about the product category you’re browsing for.  Google says insights will be gathered from a “wide range of trusted sources,” and compiled in one place. For example, if you’re searching for mountain bikes, Google will provide insights about the size of the bike you should be riding, information about brakes and suspension, popular trails around you and more.

The feature is rolling out for Google Shopping today, September 28th.

Dynamic shopping filters: Normally, filters allow you to sort results by price and relevancy. With new shopping filters on Google, users would be able to shop categorically. For example, if you’re looking for jeans, you’ll be able to sort them by ‘skinny,’ wide leg,’ ‘boot cut,’ and more. Similarly, for T-shirts, filters such as round neck, crew neck, baggy, and more would allow you to tailor the Google Shopping experience according to your needs.

Dynamic Filters for Google Shopping will be “available soon” in select countries in Europe.
