Bell asks CRTC to review $7.5 million fine stemming from telephone pole dispute with Vidéotron

Bell is appealing a decision that saw the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) penalize the carrier $7.5 million for denying Vidéotron access to telephone pole infrastructure.

The Commission found Bell deployed fibre facilities on poles that Vidéotron was waiting to deploy its network on, ultimately denying its application. Bell and Vidéotron are competitors, and the CRTC said the denial slowed Vidéotron’s network deployment and created an advantage for Bell.

But Bell says the commission made a number of errors when delivering its judgment.

“The Commission incorrectly refused to consider highly relevant evidence that would have led to a different outcome,” Bell states as one of the reasons for its applications. Others include the CRTC applied the wrong test to determine if Bell should face a penalty, known as Administrative Monetary Penalty (AMP), and that the figure is “inexplicably and egregiously large.”

  1. “We request that the Commission correct the errors identified within this application…apply the correct test with respect to the applicability of an AMP, and reach a conclusion that no AMP is warranted in light of Bell’s significant due diligence processes with respect to compliance with construction standards,” Bell states in its application.

This isn’t the only dispute involving Bell, Vidéotron, and the CRTC. The two telecom companies are also dueling over roaming services.

White Xbox Series X spotted in a Logitech advert

Logitech released a new commercial for its ASTRO A30 wireless headset on Wednesday, September 21st, and surprisingly, the headset isn’t the main attraction of the ad.

First spotted by VGC, there is a white Xbox Series X console displayed in the ad, which is rare because the console has only ever been available in ‘Black’ colourway, barring special edition consoles.

From 0:14 to 0:15 in the video embedded above, you can see the White Xbox Series X placed adjacent to a PlayStation 5. Other gadgets in the scene include peripherals, streaming mics, a VR headset, controllers, and an old joystick console-looking thing.

It is currently unclear whether the White Xbox Series X is a limited edition console designed especially for the advert, or whether Microsoft plans to launch the new colourway sometime in the future. One clue, which might suggest that a white Xbox Series X might be on the way is the fact that Microsoft recently launched a two-tone, predominantly white, and black Xbox Elite Series 2 controller.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Microsoft about the colourways, and will update this story to reflect the company’s comments about the white console.

An Apple Original Christmas film starring Canada’s Ryan Reynolds is hitting the big screen on November 11th and Apple TV+ on November 18th.

The film is a modern musical rendition of Charles Dickens’ classic holiday novel, A Christmas Carol.

Minister Champagne requests Canadian Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee address network reliability

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry says his direction to have telecom companies implement an agreement to provide services during outages was just the first step to improving network reliability.

François-Philippe Champagne took to Twitter to announce he recently met with the Canadian Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee and directed them to develop measures for reliable network connectivity across the country.

“I will continue to hold Canada’s telecom companies accountable, and keep Canadians updated on this important work,” Champagne tweeted.

“We will do everything to strengthen the reliability of our networks and address affordability and competition.”

Earlier this month, 13 telecom providers signed an MOU to guarantee various assistance, including emergency calls, in the event of major outages. Champagne directed the companies to take this action after Roger’s July 8th outage that saw its network go down nationwide.

Despite Champagne’s announcement, it’s unclear what the specifics of his meeting with the advisory committee were and what he plans on doing next to ensure network reliability, in fact, improves.

OpenMedia backs bill to make ISPs provide internet speed reports

OpenMedia is asking the government to do more to address internet speed reporting from Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

The non-profit specifically points to Bil C-288, a bill that seeks to revise the Telecommunications Act to require ISPs to publicly share broadband network performance.

OpenMedia argues the private member’s bill will help Canadians make educated decisions when picking internet services. It will also see service providers compete on the network performance they’re providing customers.

OpenMedia’s campaigns director, Matt Hatfield, says the matter addresses truth and transparency.

“If an internet provider is advertising certain speeds, consumers have the right to know before they buy if those speeds accurately reflect average network performance.”

Hatfield said the bill hosts particular importance for Canadians residing in rural areas and those who rely on low-cost services. “High-speed internet underperformance is irritating; but when lower-speed internet underperforms, it effectively denies people an essential service.”

The group says Canada is behind in adopting such legislation. Australia and the U.K. recently adopted reporting requirements, and the FCC in the U.S. has required companies to provide labels that inform customers on a range of factors, OpenMedia says.

Google’s upcoming Pixel Tablet will reportedly feature an 11-inch display

Details about the Pixel Tablet display have been leaked. The leak comes from Kuba Wojciechowski through 91mobiles.

Wojciechowski received the information from shipping EVT (engineering validation test) units to India, which indicates that there will be two storage versions Reportedly, there will be a 128GB model and a 256GB model, and both will feature Wi-Fi 6.

The EVT also indicates that the tablet might launch before the Pixel 8 next year. This makes me think that it may come in the spring alongside Google I/O and the A-series Pixel, or during the summer around when the Pixel Buds Pro released this year.

Further, the Pixel Tablet features a 10.95-inch display, which will likely be around 11 inches when officially marketed. The display will support USI stylus standard —  with confirmation of a USI 2.0 stylus from Google.

9to5Google also says that Google is also working on a second ‘Pro’ tablet. It’s not clear what specs the Pro tablet would use, with the only evidence so far suggesting it would have a different rear camera sensor than the Pixel Tablet. Given how Google has typically approached devices with the ‘Pro’ monicker, the Pro tablet could ship with improvements like extra RAM, a better display, or a better camera system (if not all of those).

The Pixel Tablet is expected to come out sometime next year.

Hacker behind GTA VI hack reportedly 17-year-old from London

Last weekend, over 90 videos and images of GTA VI leaked online. The anticipated game has been in development for years, but nothing official regarding the title had been shown off yet.

Now, a 17-year-old hacker from London, U.K., known by the online handle ‘White’ and affiliated with the hacking group Lupsus$, has been arrested. London police say they arrested the hacker on September 23rd following an investigation supported by the National Crime Agency.

While the London police have yet to confirm the link to the GTA VI hack, journalist Matthew Keys recently tweeted that the arrest is “related to intrusion on Rockstar Games and possibly Uber Technologies.”

Keys says that police are expected to provide more details regarding the arrest shortly. This story will be updated when London police confirm the link to the GTA VI hack.

Though many of the leaked GTA VI clips have been pulled down, they’re still widely available on the internet and feature what seems to be an alpha build of the game. The leaks confirmed that the game will feature male and female playable characters, a Miami-like Vice City setting, and more intricate robbing mechanics.

It’s worth noting that the same hacker is also reportedly responsible for a recent cyber attack on Uber. Though an obviously serious situation, in an amusing twist, the 17-year-old hacker wouldn’t even be able to legally purchase Grand Theft Auto VI given its U.K.-based PEGI 18 rating title that requires the buyer to be 18 or older.

Lupsus$ is also responsible for hacks tied to Cisco, Samsung, Microsoft and more.

$38/25GB, $43/30GB plans available to some Fido customers

Some existing Fido customers might be able to get a $38/mo 25GB plan, at least according to a recent post on Red Flag Deals (RFD).

According to RFD user ‘saadhs’ (spotted by iPhone in Canada), Fido has a $38/mo plan with 25GB of data and talk and text available in the ‘Change Plan’ section of the provider’s online account manager. Moreover, saadhs said in an update that the plan offers 4G LTE data after confirming the detail with a Fido agent (previously, saadhs posted that the plan was limited to 3G speeds).

Along with the $38 plan, saadhs also noted there was a $43/mo 30GB plan.

Fido’s $38/25GB and $43/30GB plans | Source: RFD

Both options are quite a bit better than what Fido offers to new customers on its website. Currently, the Rogers flanker brand offers $60/20GB and $55/10GB plans, both of which can get a $5/mo discount for 12 months with a promo code. That offer has been ongoing for weeks now.

Other Fido plans include $45/6GB, $41.25/4GB, and $37.50/2GB, all of which are considerably worse than the offers spotted by RFD, although it’s worth noting pricing may differ based on region.

Regardless, if you’re a Fido customer, you may want to check your account for any of these offers and make a switch if you can.
