The Nothing phone will likely be revealed March 26th

In an email to ‘Nothing’ fans, the company has revealed when it will launch its next product — we just really don’t know what that device is yet.

The event is scheduled for March 23rd at 8am ET/5am PT. You can sign up to get notifications about the event on Nothing’s website.

It’s widely assumed that this new device will be a smartphone, and the Snapdragon logo on Nothing’s site all but confirms this. There are also rumours that Nothing founder Carl Pei showed off this device at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. Other leaks indicate that the phone will feature transparent elements similar to the Ear (1) earbuds.

Nothing has a habit of milking its product launches, so instead of re-writing the same info over and over again, here’s my recap from last week regarding what we expect. The only other twist is that more than one potential device could be announced at the event.

The Verge reports that Nothing will reveal a “product roadmap,” suggesting that we could see a new pair of Nothing earbuds or perhaps an entry into a new product category. For instance, just purely based off Nothing’s Vibes, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it drop a Bluetooth speaker.

We’ve previously reported that the Nothing smartphone would hit store shelves in April, so the company revealing the device in late March lines up well with this timeline. This also means that the Nothing phone will likely compete directly with the OnePlus 10 Pro in Canada.

A13 Bionic allows Apple’s Studio Display to track you during videocalls

Apple revealed its new Studio Display at its ‘Peek Performance’ event yesterday, marking the Cupertino, California-based company’s first standalone monitor offering in several years.

The Studio Display, which looks solid on paper, will be even more satisfying to use thanks to the inclusion of an iPhone chip serving as the brains of the monitor.

The A13 Bionic, the same chip that was introduced in the iPhone 11 lineup and later used in the second-gen iPhone SE and the ninth-gen iPad, allows the Studio Display to fulfill a lot of features that were previously only available on iOS and iPadOS devices in Apple’s ecosystem.

The chip helps power the monitor’s 12-megapixel ultrawide webcam and powers ‘Center Stage’ while on a video call. Center Stage uses machine learning to keep the subject centred, even if you move out of the frame. If others join the feed, it zooms out to fit them in the frame, too.

Although the A13 Bionic is two generations old at this point, it’s still capable of performing over a trillion operations per second, allowing the new monitor to offer staple iOS features like “Hey Siri” to the Mac Pro, Mac Mini and the newly-unveiled Mac Studio desktop. It’s worth noting that Center Stage and “Hey Siri” support only work when the Studio Display is connected to an Apple computer.

Another feature that relies on the A13 chipset, which isn’t supported if you pair the monitor with a Windows PC, is spatial audio. Apple added six speakers and three microphones to the monitor in an attempt to create a cinema-like experience whenever you’re listening to supported tracks or watching videos with virtual spatial audio.

And while the experience might not be as dominant as it is on a pair of Airpods Max, it’s still expected to recreate an immersive experience that would be better than your average monitor speakers.

The Studio Display starts at $1,999 and will be available on March 18th.

Samsung FAQ page addresses concerns about app throttling with GOS

Samsung published a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page on its South Korean website addressing some of the concerns around its Game Optimizing Service (GOS), which was at the heart of recent controversy around the company.

For those who haven’t followed the GOS debacle, the short version is that Samsung’s optimization software throttled performance across thousands of apps (one list put the total at 10,000). Following the outcry, Samsung said it would issue an update that allowed customers to disable GOS on their Galaxy smartphones.

The GOS issue impacted Galaxy S series smartphones dating back to the S10 line and led to Geekbench delisting performance scores for those devices for “benchmark manipulation.” The debacle has even sparked a preliminary investigation from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission into Samsung’s Galaxy S22 advertising.

Fast forward to now, and the new FAQ posted by Samsung seeks to explain away some of the (admittedly well-earned) ire against the company.

Spotted by Android Authority and machine translated from Korean, the FAQ reiterates the incoming software update and clarifies it will add a performance priority toggle. Samsung says that enabling the toggle will bring a performance boost of “approximately 10 frames” based on one game.

Interestingly, Samsung also claims in the FAQ that the list of 10,000 apps supposedly throttled by GOS was actually for determining whether an installed app was a game or not. Specifically, Samsung claims GOS “does not work with regular apps other than games.”

The FAQ page also addressed the issue of GOS not impacting performance for benchmarking apps. In short, Samsung says that benchmark tools aren’t games, and therefore GOS doesn’t apply — not a great line of reasoning overall.

Finally, and perhaps one of the few positive revelations in the FAQ, is Samsung’s commitment to offering free repairs to phones even if users turn off GOS (assuming the phone is still under warranty, of course). That should alleviate any concerns about turning off GOS.

Those interested can check out the full FAQ here.

Samsung Galaxy A73 leaked renders showcase very thin bezels

Samsung’s Galaxy A73 is expected to appear at some point in the next few months, so it’s not a surprise that we’re starting to see renders of the rumoured handset. According to 91Mobiles, which first published these images, they’re official press renders of the device.

The A73 will reportedly sport a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a Full HD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and an in-display fingerprint reader. The handset is also rumoured to feature a quad-camera setup on the rear, with the primary camera hosting a 64-megapixel sensor.

SamMobile previously leaked that the handset will host a 108-megapixel shooter. Alongside the primary shooter, the Galaxy A73 is expected to feature a 12-megapixel ultrawide, a 5-megapixel macro and a 5-megapixel depth shooter. Other leaks point to the handset also hosting a telephoto camera.

The Galaxy A73 reportedly features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G processor, 6GB/8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, an IP67 rating, stereo speakers, NFC and a USB Type-C port. The handset is also poised to feature a 5,000mAh battery and 25W fast charging.

It looks like the A73 will feature thin bezels, too. Of course, Samsung’s S series features even slimmer bezels, but the A series is part of the company’s mid-range lineup, and these bezels are thinner than the handset’s predecessor. The rumoured A53 looks very similar to the A73, according to 91Mobiles.

It’s not clear when Samsung will unveil the Galaxy A73 and A53 or if the devices will release in Canada. It’s worth mentioning that South Korean phone maker didn’t launch the A72 in Canada last year, and only the A52 and A32 released here. With this in mind, it’s possible we won’t see the A73 this year and only the A53 will release in Canada.

Buying Guide: How to choose the right iPad for you

Apple has pulled back the curtain on a refreshed iPad Air that packs phenomenal specs, but it’s not the perfect iPad for everybody.

If you’re looking to get a new iPad this spring there are four main models to choose from: the new iPad Air, the regular iPad, the iPad mini and the iPad Pro, which comes in two sizes.

This guide pushes users towards certain Apple tablets, but it’s important to think about what you want the iPad to do and try to buy the one that fits your needs (and wallet) the best. Even as someone who loves iPads, I often struggle to find good use cases for mine since I already spend so much time on my smartphone and laptop.

For those reasons, the iPad mini has fit my needs lately since it allows me to watch YouTube and edit photos when I’m on the go. However, when I was in high school, I used a basic iPad as my main computer since my work was mostly writing and research. If I wanted to go full iPad now, I’d lean more towards an iPad Air or an iPad Pro.

Keep reading to see where the other iPads fit into Apple’s current product lineup and what one is best for you.

The iPad

For most people, the base-level $429 iPad is perfect. It’s a large tablet with a 10.2-inch display and while it looks a little retro, it packs pretty modern Apple components and features.

It’s the only iPad with the traditional chin/forehead design and a home button. It’s also the only iPad that still uses a lighting connector. That said, this device looks more outdated than it is. The latest model features an A13 Bionic chipset, and in my experience, it’s more than fast enough to use as a media consumption device, web browser and mobile gaming station.

It even works great as a word processor, but the lack of a USB-C connector may limit its computer potential for some. This means that you also need to use it with the awkward Apple Pencil 1. It’s actually a decent pressure-sensitive stylus, but it’s annoying to charge.

The larger screen and low cost make this the ideal entry-level iPad for most people. if you’re on the fence about whether or not an iPad will fit into your lifestyle, I’d suggest starting with one of these. This is a starting option if you need it to be your main PC. However, if you’re going to be using the tablet full-time or on the go a lot, keep reading.

This iPad, and all following iPads, have a 12-megapixel front-facing selfie camera that features ‘Centre Stage’ tech that can track the user as they move around during video calls.

iPad mini

Conceptually this is my favourite iPad. Its 8.3-inch screen is portable but still large enough to get work done with. It also doesn’t feel large enough to carry in a bag. This might seem minor, but since larger iPads more often need to be tossed in a backpack it makes me ask myself, will my laptop be better to carry around instead? Since the mini is so much smaller, it fits in a jacket pocket and really helps me slim down my mobile content creation toolkit.

It’s also more powerful than the previously mentioned iPad. I never had any issues with its performance and it constantly surprises me how much I can get out of this tiny machine.

It’s not really for editing intricate videos because it’s so small. However, it excels at drawing, photo editing, gaming and reading. It slyly excels at mobile gaming and reading by being a larger screen than a phone, but still more comfortable to hold in your hand over time than a full-sized iPad. If you even spend an hour reading on your iPad every night I’d recommend maybe saving up the extra few hundred to get this over a base model. Over the years, your wrists will thank you.

This iPad mini also features a USB-C port, allowing it to be used with more professional accessories, but not older Apple Lighting connector-based dongles. This iPad also has a magnetic dock on the side so it can be used with the Apple Pencil 2. This magnetic connection makes it a lot easier to always have the Apple Pencil with your iPad and is a massive improvement over the first Apple Pencil.

If you live life on the go and your tablet tasks don’t revolve around needing to type on the screen, this iPad is for you. That said, if you want a larger screen, keep reading.

iPad Air

Stepping up in price and size, the iPad Air is a larger and more cable iPad mini. Stretching out to encompass a 10.9-inch footprint, it offers a more traditional iPad form factor, but with several modern bells and whistles.

This includes a USB-C port (2x faster than the mini’s), Apple Pencil 2 support and the coveted Apple M1 desktop-class chip. This should future-proof this upper-midrange Apple tablet, and might even allow it to compete more evenly with devices like the M1-equipped MacBook Air.

This means that the iPad Air will likely be a capable content creation machine when it releases later in March. It also means that it’s rather costly starting at $750 for a 64GB model — which isn’t a passable amount of storage — I’d expect most would want the 256GB model that starts at $950.

This isn’t bad, but if you do plan to use it as a computer replacement, you could easily find yourself with a few hundred dollars spent on accessories as well. For example, adding an Apple Magic Keyboard and an Apple Pencil 2 tacks on $569.

Regardless of this, if you’re deciding between a MacBook Air and an iPad, the iPad Air is a great option. We’ve yet to go hands-on with the new version of the tablet, but since it features Apple’s powerful M1 chip, it should offer more than enough for content creation. It’s just up to you to choose if you’d rather use iPadOS or macOS.

iPad Pro

iPad Pro

There are two sizes of iPad Pro and as of March 2022, they both run on the M1 chip, but they’re not the same.

The more expensive 12.9-inch model starts at $1,399 in Canada and comes with a Liquid Retina ‘XDR’ display, which means that it offers better dynamic range and deeper blacks. It can also get brighter, allowing creators to make content in proper HDR. However, Apple is known for making great screens, and the 11-inch model’s regular Liquid Retina display is no slouch either.

Both iPad Pro models have 120Hz screens so they should feel as smooth as an iPhone 13 Pro or the new Apple MacBook Pro models. All of the other iPads in Apple’s lineup feature 60Hz displays.

One of the most ‘pro’ aspects about the iPad is that you can outfit them with 2TB of storage. If you really need this to be a laptop replacement or you handle a lot of large files, these are the best iPads for that.

However, since you can use USB-C-based hard drives with most iPads now, it’s a lot easier to offload and move files around than it has been in the past.

The iPad Pro models also pack the most robust rear cameras of any iPad thanks to their two rear shooters, including a single 12-megapixel wide camera and a 10-megapixel ultrawide. Like the iPad mini, the Pros are also equipped with a flash and the augmented reality (AR) focused LiDAR sensor.

The iPad Pro also features the best speakers and mic array you can get on an Apple tablet — and maybe even on any tablet period.

Still, unless you know you need the Pro for its Lidar sensors or 120Hz XDR screen, I think most users would get more value out of the iPad Air.

Netflix says ad-supported subscription ‘not in our plan,’ defends recent price hikes

Netflix says it has no plans to introduce an ad-supported subscription.

During a March 8th investor conference, Netflix CFO Spencer Neumann was asked about the potential of a Netflix tier featuring ads.

“It’s not like we have religion against advertising, to be clear,” said Neumann (via Variety) at Morgan Stanley’s 2022 Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. “But that’s not something that’s in our plans right now… We have a really nice scalable subscription model, and again, never say never, but it’s not in our plan.”

The question came up in response to recent news that Disney will launch an ad-supported Disney+ membership later this year in the U.S. and internationally next year. The company has not yet commented on potential Canadian availability. Other streaming services, like the U.S.-only HBO Max and Hulu, also have lower-cost, ad-enabled options.

Interestingly, Neumann said that by going lower price, some of these services are “also losing a lot of money.” When asked about Netflix’s own price increases, the last two of which happened in Canada within an 18-month period, Neumann said “at the end of the day, we’re pricing for what we believe is the value we provide.”

N64’s F-Zero X comes to Switch Online’s ‘Expansion Pack’ on March 11th

F-Zero X is racing onto the Nintendo’s Switch Online’ Expansion Pack’ subscription tier on Friday, March 11th.

The game was originally released back in 1998 as the sequel to Super Nintendo (SNES) racing game F-Zero X. Though it’s not the greatest looking title, it ran at 60fps and supported 30 AI racers competing simultaneously, which at the time was a technical achievement.

F-Zero X is the thirteenth game to hit Switch Online’s Expansion Pack tier. Last month, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask hit the streaming service, with Pokémon Snap, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Mario Golf arriving in the coming months.

Though several N64 games ran poorly on the Switch when they first launched, Nintendo has made moves to improve their emulation over the last few weeks. For example, fog has finally returned to The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

Nintendo’s ‘Expansion Pack’ online tier costs $63.99 for a 12-month individual membership (one account) or $99.99 for a 12-month Family Membership (up to eight accounts).

‘GTA V’ for next-gen consoles on sale until June 14th

Rockstar’s much-loved Grand Theft Auto V  and GTA Online will finally arrive for next-gen consoles on March 15th with revamped graphics to take advantage of the newer hardware.

While the ageing game will look a lot better on new consoles, it also comes with a price tag — one that might actually be reasonable if you manage to take advantage of one of the sales. The problem will be finding them.

The Verge put together a list of the various discounts available for next-gen copies of GTA V in the U.S. It seems similar offers are available in Canada, but with some exceptions. It’s also worth noting that the next-gen version of GTA V is available for pre-order now, but the deals should extend beyond the March 15th release.

GTA V on PS5

Let’s start with PlayStation 5. Those in the Sony camp are reportedly able to nab GTA V for 75 percent off and GTA Online for free until June 14th. I was able to find the free GTA Online in Canada, but not the next-gen version of GTA V to verify if it has the same discount as in the U.S.

The Verge noted that the PlayStation 5 versions could only be found by browsing the PlayStation Store on a PS5. That appears to be true in Canada as well — I couldn’t find them on the PlayStation Store website. But then, I also couldn’t find the next-gen GTA V while checking the store on the PS5.

It’s also worth noting some people may need to navigate to the PS4 version of GTA V then click the three dots, ‘View Product,’ and select ‘Grand Theft Auto V (PlayStation 5)’ to view it, but again, that didn’t work for me.

If you’re among the lucky few that own a PS5 and you’re blessed by the Sony gods to see next-gen GTA V in the PS5 store, please share the price below for the rest of us.

GTA V on Xbox Series X/S

Those in the Microsoft camp may have better luck finding the next-gen GTA V, but they’ll pay more for it too.

The revamped version of the game for the Xbox Series X and S is available for 50 percent off. I verified this was the case in Canada, thanks in part to the wonderful web-accessible Xbox Store. You can even check it out for yourself via this link.

Next-gen GTA V will cost $24.99 until June 14th — the bundle appears to include both the base game and GTA Online. That said, if you just want Online, it’s available separately for $12.49 (that’s also a 50 percent discount).

I already own GTA V, is there an upgrade option?

No.

Should I buy next-gen GTA V?

It depends! If you haven’t played GTA V before and you want to on your fancy new console, this is a pretty great deal. It’s also not a bad offer if you want to get into GTA Online. However, for those who already purchased GTA V or Online on a previous console, handing over more money to Rockstar may leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Whatever your situation, I’d also strongly encourage you not to pre-order the game. Rockstar’s last launch, the GTA Trilogy, was incredibly buggy. It may be better to wait and see how the revamped GTA V fares before putting down your hard-earned cash. You’ve got until June to take advantage of the discounted price anyway, might as well use that time to see if the game’s worth buying.
