Mobvoi’s latest $125 smartwatch packs in advanced heart rate tracking

If you’re looking for a budget smartwatch with extensive heart rate tracking, this new TicWatch GTH Pro from Mobvoi could be a perfect choice.

I’ll start by clarifying that I’ve yet to test out this watch, so if you plan to buy it for legitimate medical reasons, I’d strongly suggest talking to a medical expert.

If you’re just trying to get SWOLE, keep reading.

This watch is an iterative update to Mobvoi’s poorly regarded TicWatch GTH. Still, the hardware that sets the watch apart is a selection of photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensors on the side and bottom that work similarly to the electrocardiogram in Apple Watch Series 4 or newer.

Mobvoi is careful to stress that while similar, the technology isn’t the same. This is likely because selling a device as an Electrocardigam needs regulatory approval from Health Canada. What we do know is that it uses algorithms based on proprietary SphygmoCor technology from ATCOR, an Australian-based heart health company.

In a press release from ATCOR, the company claims that it’s been working with Mobvoi over the past two years to bring its central arterial waveform measuring technology to this “non-medical wearable device.”

Specifically, these new sensors can track your heart rate, exercise capacity, heart-stress index, arterial age and something called an Arty Score. This number is just a combination of some key factors into one tally to make it easier for users to get understandable/glanceable information to compare themselves against.

Since this watch is meant for fitness, I think this makes a lot of sense here. That said, it will only matter if Mobvoi can improve its fitness tracking.

Beyond these new heart tracking features, the watch is loaded with 14 pre-set workout modes, a blood oxygen sensor, sleep tracking, waterproofing and more. It’s an appealing wearable package, especially considering its lower cost.

The main issue with this smartwatch is that it’s a bit convoluted to get in Canada right now. I was able to add one to my cart from Amzon.com, and it says that it will ship to Canada for an extra $27 CAD. The TicWatch GTH Pro costs $100 USD (roughly $126 CAD).

MobileSyup has reached out for a review unit from Mobvoi, but if you’re interested in the smartwatch I’d suggest reading a few reviews on the TicWatch GTH to get a basis of Mobvoi’s lower-end wearable reputation.

Canada will soon require digital platforms to pay news outlets and broadcasters revenue

Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez’s mandate letter calls on him to introduce drastic legislation to equal the news revenue playing field.

The legislation will likely require digital platforms (like Google and Facebook) financially benefiting from Canadian news content to share revenue with news outlets. The mandate letter states Rodriguez will present legislation in early 2022.

But according to recent reporting from Cartt, a timeline to when exactly the legislation will be introduced has not been made public.

The publication does confirm news broadcasters are going to be a part of the new legislation, according to an announcement Rodriguez made at a Canada 2020 event discussing the future of news.

“Minister Rodriguez confirmed last week that broadcasters will benefit from the framework, given the important role they play in producing and providing Canadians access to news,” the spokesperson told Cartt.

The mandate letter also details the legislation will take after Australia’s approach.

Named the “news media bargaining code,” the legislation allows Australia’s Treasury to designate certain digital platforms to share revenues with news platforms they financially benefit from.

But what exactly that will look like in Canada is not clear at this time.

“Further details on the legislative approach will be available in due course,” the spokesperson told Cartt.

Valve’s Gabe Newell is delivering Steam Decks to some customers

The best part of this video is how confused some Steam Deck buyers are when Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell shows up at their house to deliver the company’s recently released handheld gaming device.

That said, several of the Steam Deck buyers featured in the video below recognize Newell when he shows up at the doorstep to drop off their Steam Deck. However, there are instances where other people living in the house accept the order, leading to even more confusion. This makes sense because while Newell is a famous video game developer, he is only well-known amongst a specific group of people.

Amusingly, Newell also seems a little embarrassed that he signed some of these Steam Decks and even says, “Hopefully, people won’t get mad that I’m signing them.” The entire video is extremely awkward in a very endearing way, but it’s also a great promotional video for the Steam Deck given its focus on collaborating with owners to improve the device.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Newell said that Valve has no plans to build a game subscription service and that it wants to find a way to bring Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass platform to its new handheld console. On another Steam Deck-related note, Elden Ring runs surprisingly well on the powerful handheld following an upcoming update that’s currently available in beta.

I’ll have more on the Steam Deck in the coming days, including a review of the portable.

TD launches My TD Rewards by partnering with Starbucks

TD Bank has launched its new loyalty rewards program by partnering with coffee chain Starbucks.

The loyalty program is called My TD Rewards, and customers can access it through online banking or the mobile app. The program allows customers to earn points on everyday purchases and use that as currency in select stores.

Customers must also have a Starbucks account to redeem this offer.

Selected TD credit cards and TD Visa Debit cardholders can link their card to their Starbucks account to earn 50 percent more stars when making a purchase. Stars can be redeemed for food, drinks, and select merchandise.

Customers can sign up in three steps:

  1. Sign in to your account
  2. Select card/account. If you’re on the web, select the “manage tab” and then “My TD Rewards.” If you’re signing in through the app, select “My TD Rewards.” Select Starbucks.
  3. Link your TD card with your Starbucks account

“We know our customers are always looking for opportunities to earn and redeem points from their favourite retailers, which is why we’re so thrilled to be working with Starbucks to offer our customers more rewards on the purchases that bring them joy — like that first morning cup of coffee,” David Reilly, VP of partnerships and loyalty at TD Credit Cards, said in a statement.

A full list of eligible cards is available on the bank’s website.

At this time, the offer is only available at Starbucks, but TD notes more partners will be added “in the coming months.”

TD first shared details of the reward program in January during the TD Tech Day event. TD representatives told MobileSyrup different loyalty experiences would be released in future updates, allowing customers to earn more points.

LG Velvet Android 12 update to roll out in some regions in coming weeks

LG’s smartphone division may be gone, but it hasn’t forgotten — LG Velvet owners can expect the Android 12 update to start hitting devices soon.

As spotted by XDA Developers (via Reddit), a post on LG’s South Korean website indicates that LG will try to roll out Android 12 to the Velvet in the first quarter of 2021. Unfortunately, the update doesn’t provide much more information than that, although it does say the release timeline is only for South Korea.

In other words, that could mean Canadian Velvet owners will get the Android 12 update shortly after it becomes available in South Korea, or it could be a longer wait. Moreover, XDA notes that the South Korea focus suggests LG will prioritize the update for the Snapdragon 765 version of the Velvet.

It’s unclear at the moment what the timeline is for the Snapdragon 845 or Dimensity 1000C Velvet models, or if they will even get the Android 12 update.

Aside from the LG Velvet, the post says LG plans to deliver security updates for the LG Wing, Q51, Q52, Q61, and Q92 in the first quarter of 2022. Once again, that timeline is specific to the South Korean market.

LG officially announced its departure from the smartphone market in 2021. However, at the time the company confirmed it would continue providing updates for its existing devices. Specifically, the company said it would release up to three Android OS upgrades for premium phones released in 2019 or later. Budget handsets launched in 2020 or later will see two OS upgrades.

When it comes to the LG Velvet, it launched with Android 10 and received an Android 11 update last year. LG already confirmed the Velvet would get Android 13.

Chatr flash sale offers one month’s fee in credit to new activations

Rogers’ flanker brand Chatr Mobile has a flash sale until March 2nd offering customers one month’s fee in credit.

Customers who sign up for an eligible Chatr plan — which appears to be all of Chatr’s plans according to the provider’s website — during the flash sale will get a credit equivalent to one month’s plan fee applied to their account on their third-anniversary date.

Fine print on Chatr’s website also notes that the offer is available “on new activations.” Moreover, customers will need to reply to a text message received after activation to claim the credit.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that if you change your plan or if the account becomes inactive, Chatr will no longer give the credit.

This isn’t the first time Chatr has offered a one-month credit in a flash sale. If you’re looking to get a Chatr plan, now’s a good time to do it. You can check out all of Chatr’s plans here.
