Snapchat to allow users to change their username once per year

Being stuck with a username that you made when you were young sucks, and while most social media platforms give you an option to update your username (at least once), others have lagged behind.

Newly added to the list of platforms that let you update your username is Snapchat, allowing you to finally go from “XxX_SpongeBOBLover1_XxX” to something more mature.

Snapchat previously allowed users to alter their display names (how your name appears when someone sends you a snap or message), but starting tomorrow, Wednesday, February 23rd, all Snapchatters across iOS and Android will be able to change their username without affecting their friend list, Snap code, Snap score and memories.

To update your username, tap your Bitmoji on the top left corner and navigate to ‘username.’ If you head to that section now, you’ll see that you can’t interact with it, but if you head to the section tomorrow, you’ll see a “Change Username” option, as seen in the image below:

Type in your desired username, tap next, and you’re good to go.

It’s worth noting that while Snapchat is allowing users to change their usernames, you’ll only be able to alter it once per year, so be prudent about the name you choose.

This comes soon after Snapchat announced that it would allow users to share real-time locations with friends.

Privacy must continue to be considered in the Competition Act, Privacy Commissioner says

Daniel Therrien says data and privacy will play an essential role in future discussions on Canada’s competition policy.

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner made the comments in a submission to Senator Howard Wetston’s consultation on what the Competition Act will mean in a world that continues to digitize. The Act focuses on competition and anti-competitive practices in various industries across Canada.

Therrien says the relationship between privacy, competition, and consumer protection continues to grow with the digital transformation of Canada’s economy.

He says it’s not hard to imagine how organizations could engage in anti-competitive behaviour when it comes to privacy, given it’s a “non-price factor,” meaning it’s something that will alter the demand for a specific service but only to a certain extent.

“If a reduction in the number of competitors in a market is likely to lead to increased prices, the inverse can be true with respect to privacy protection as an element of product quality,” he says. There’s less incentive to enhance privacy with fewer competitors, leaving customers with limited options.

For example, if a company were to track and monetize customers’ online habits in a market with limited competition, customers would have little choice. They could accept the tracking of their information or stop using the service, a hard sell given it may not be practical, Therrien notes.

He further says there needs to be continued support for collaboration across different regulatory branches. Therrien points to the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore as an example. The regulatory body has stated that data protection will be an essential factor.

“I would encourage you to consider, where appropriate, amendments to the Competition Act that would enable, or strengthen, cooperation with all regulators who share responsibility for overseeing digital markets,” Therrien says in closing.

The privacy commissioner’s office also serves as a co-chair for the Global Privacy Assembly’s Digital Citizen and Consumer Working Group, which examines the intersection of privacy and competition.

Apple reportedly working on 20-inch foldable 2-in-1-like MacBook

Have you ever looked at your MacBook Air/Pro and wished it featured a foldable display?

Probably not, right? Well, that hasn’t stopped Apple from reportedly experimenting with foldable display technology in its laptops. In a new report, reputable display analyst Ross Young (Display Supply Chain Consultants)  says that Apple is developing a foldable laptop/2-in-1 that features a 20-inch display.

“We are now showing Apple in our roadmap for foldable notebooks. We hear there is interest at the largest size yet,” Young said in the report, according to Tom’s Guide.

It’s worth pointing out that though the term “notebook” typically refers to a laptop, there’s a possibility this foldable display rumour could be tied to an entirely different device. Young outlines that Apple’s foldable MacBook features an on-screen keyboard while folded and turns into a monitor when unfolded.

That monitor can then be connected to a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, like Apple’s Magic Keyboard, for example. It’s unclear exactly how the device will fold. In a sense, the device sounds very similar to Microsoft’s Surface Pro line.

Young speculates that the 20-inch display likely features a 4K or higher resolution. Further, he says that the device likely won’t launch until after 2025 and its release date is potentially set for between 2026 and 2027. The analyst goes on to say that Apple’s often-rumoured foldable iPhone project has been delayed to 2025 outside of its original 2023 to 2024 window.

Given foldable smartphones are a relatively established device category now, thanks to Samsung, it makes sense that Apple is at least experimenting in the space. The tech giant has a history of taking technology other companies have popularized and — at least in most cases — improving on it in a notable way. Given how well-received Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are, it’s unclear how Apple could meaningfully build on the foldable concept.

Federal government invests millions to connect rural Newfoundland and Labrador residents with faster internet

The Government of Canada allocated $136 million to connect the remaining rural households of Newfoundland and Labrador with high-speed internet.

The government announced earlier this month funding from the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF), a federal initiative that supports internet projects across the country, will help bring high-speed internet to 528 homes in North West River and the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation.

On February 21st, Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development, announced the $136 million investment would benefit various communities, including Red Bay, Cape Broyle, Humber Valley.

$116 million of this funding comes from the UBF, and $20 million is coming from the government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“An investment in broadband is an investment in communities. It spurs economic growth and improves access to a range of services, from health care to educational opportunities,” Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, said in a statement. “In my travels around the province, the need for reliable broadband is often raised by residents and community leaders–and our government has been committed to addressing it.”

Sony’s upcoming PS VR2 will be slimmer and lighter than its predecessor

Sony confirmed earlier this year at CES 2022 that its upcoming virtual reality headset is called the PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2).

Now, the Tokyo, Japan-based company has unveiled the new headset’s design and offered a look at its PS VR2 Sense controllers.

Shared by the senior vice president of platform experience Hideaki Nishino, PlayStation’s blog post outlines how Sony has intentionally designed the headset and its controllers to look similar, with both sharing an “orb” aesthetic. According to Nishino, “The circular orb shape represents the 360-degree view that players feel when they enter the virtual reality world, so this shape captures it nicely.”

While not much was revealed about the upcoming headset’s tech specifications, the blog post does mention PlayStation VR2’s new lens adjustment dials, an overall slimmer and lighter design, a built-in motor for headset feedback, along with an updated design to promote ventilation and airflow.

Nishino also mentions that the PS VR2 will offer a single cord setup, making it easy to get the headset up and running.

From what we already know, the headset will feature an OLED display with a 2000 x 2040 pixel resolution per eye, a 90Hz to 120Hz refresh rate and a field-of-view of roughly 110 degrees.

Sony didn’t share when the new VR headset will hit the market or how much it will cost, though previous rumours have indicated PSVR2 will launch in 2022.
