Twitter adds ability for users to add an ‘automated’ label to bot accounts

Twitter has been working on a bot flagging feature since September of last year, and it appears as though the feature is going live today.

Back in September, the micro-blogging platform announced that the feature had been rolled out to select developer accounts, allowing them to apply labels to indicate whether a tweet has been automated by a ‘good bot’ or not.

According to the San Francisco, California-based social company, “automated accounts you might see on Twitter include bots that help you find vaccine appointments and disaster early warning systems.” Having a label on such accounts gives other (human) users a better understanding of the bot’s purpose.

At the time, the feature had been rolled out to about 500 developers, but starting today, anyone operating a bot account can add the label to its tweets.

The feature comes after Twitter stated last year that high-quality bot accounts must self-identify as such. It said at the time that developers must clearly indicate if an account is a bot and identify the person operating the account.

In other Twitter-related news, the company is currently testing out a YouTube-like video playback speed feature for Android and Web. Read more about it here.

Leaked Motorola Edge 30 Pro could sport a stylus, 50-megapixel camera

Motorola may have a new smartphone on the way aimed at the same productivity space Samsung’s Note series previously occupied.

Dubbed the ‘Edge 30 Pro,’ this Motorola flagship prominently featured a stylus in leaked materials posted by Evan Blass earlier this week. A follow-up post from WinFuture also provided details about the specifications for the device.

Starting with Blass, the leaker shared a few images on Twitter, including a GIF showing a stylus writing the word ‘Edge’ on the phone, and a picture of the phone, stylus and folio case. The phone itself doesn’t depart significantly from the aesthetic Motorola established for its flagship ‘Edge’ phones.

Further, as 9to5Google pointed out, this would mark the first time Motorola has sought to include a stylus with a flagship-tier device (although the company has made stylus-equipped devices before). However, the stylus shown in the leaked material appears rather large and, so far, there’s been no indication that the stylus would fit in the phone Galaxy Note-style. Instead, it appears the folio case shown in the images will store the stylus.

Moving on to the WinFuture post, the publication suggests the Edge 30 Pro is merely a rebranded Motorola X30, which is currently available in China.

According to WinFuture, the Edge 30 Pro boasts a 6.7-inch 1080p display, 144Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery. It will reportedly run Android 12 out of the box and have a 50-megapixel primary camera, 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a two-megapixel depth camera. Around the front, the phone will have a 60-megapixel selfie camera.

Overall, the leaked details of the Edge 30 Pro make it seem like a fairly decent smartphone, but we’ll likely learn more when Motorola reveals the phone, supposedly happening February 24th at MWC. However, it remains to be seen whether Motorola will make the phone available in Canada. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s unlikely we’ll see the phone come to Canada since previous versions have not, but only time will tell.

CRTC denies request asking Ian Scott to recuse himself on files related to internet competition

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will not consider a request asking chair Ian Scott to recuse himself on matters relating to internet competition.

The Competitive Network Operators of Canada (CNOC) filed the request with the CRTC on February 3rd. The request stems from the CRTC reversing a 2019 finding that internet rates had to decrease after receiving appeals from large telecom companies.

These companies, including Bell, Rogers, and Telus, commission their services to smaller internet service providers (ISPs), who further distribute it to their markets.

CNOC alleged Scott was biased when making decisions on the file.

The CRTC reversed the decision on May 27th, 2021, more than a year after Scott met with the CEO of Bell Media, Mirko Bibic, in an Ottawa pub in December 2019.

The reply by Stephen Millington, the CRTC’s senior general counsel, also states CNOC’s request wouldn’t be published on the CRTC’s website because only members of the commission can decide if they want to recuse themselves from decisions. The commission is not involved in this process.

“Whether recusal is appropriate in a given case is a question that each member must decide each time they adjudicate a matter, and the present situation is no different,” Millington writes.

“The chairperson will consider whether to recuse himself or not, as he has consistently done in respect of all matters since his appointment, and he will render a decision with respect to his participation in those telecommunications matters at that time.”

Executive director and general counsel of CNOC Geoff White says the letter is a troubling attempt to avoid responsibility. “In refusing to publicly post our application and consider it, not only has the CRTC breached its own rules, but due process,” he said in a statement shared with MobileSyrup.

White shared the CRTC’s response with MobileSyrup.

Google wants to build a private advertising system for Android

Google announced in a blog post on February 16th that it plans to build a ‘Privacy Sandbox’ for Android.

While some initial coverage has drawn comparisons to Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature, it’s worth noting that, at least for now, Google’s Privacy Sandbox isn’t even close. Mostly, that’s because it doesn’t exist, and it won’t for several years.

Instead, the blog post is an announcement of Google’s “multi-year initiative to build the Privacy Sandbox on Android,” and the company says it will work with the advertising industry and regulators while developing Privacy Sandbox. The search giant also indicated the goal with Privacy Sandbox is to create private advertising solutions that “limit sharing of user data with third parties and operate without cross-app identifiers, including advertising ID.”

Further, Google’s blog post calls blunt approaches “ineffective:”

“We realize that other platforms have taken a different approach to ads privacy, bluntly restricting existing technologies used by developers and advertisers. We believe that — without first providing a privacy-preserving alternative path — such approaches can be ineffective and lead to worse outcomes for user privacy and developer businesses.”

Google then cites another blog post that explains how Apple’s App Tracking Transparency doesn’t help cut down on tracking. However, it’s worth noting that App Tracking Transparency was never going to stop tracking — all it does is prevent access to an Apple device’s ‘Identifier for Advertisers’ (IDFA). As previous reporting has shown, any app that wants to keep tracking users can leverage other data from a device to develop a unique fingerprint. Then the app can use that fingerprint rather than the IDFA.

Can privacy and ad tracking co-exist?

With that in mind, it’s not entirely fair for Google to use Apple’s flawed approach as the basis for pursuing a supposedly private form of tracking (because, frankly, that’s what this appears to be). Apple didn’t implement a blunt solution that blocked all trackers — it just removed one possible tracking option.

While Google’s goal is arguably good, I’m not sure how effective it will be at creating a private advertising system.

When it comes down to it, I don’t think you can target ads at users while maintaining user privacy. Google has already tried and failed to develop ways to privately track users — for example, Google abandoned its ‘FLoC’ plans for Chrome earlier this year for a new ‘Topics’ API. Topics will generate five interests for users based on their web activity and show those to advertisers when that user visits a website. That already sounds like a privacy nightmare to me, even if it is an improvement over FLoC.

Maybe there’s an easier way. Instead of targeting ads based on user interest, serve ads based on content. For example, show tech ads on a tech news site. That requires no tracking of user activity, and you’ll serve ads to people interested in that topic. I’m sure there are other solutions out there that also don’t require tracking of any kind, whether or not it’s “private.” It’s a question of whether the big players are actually willing to abandon tracking.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Live to launch in Canada first

The Pokémon Company has announced that Pokémon Trading Card Game Live will launch a public beta exclusively in Canada across desktop and mobile.

Trading Card Game Live players will be able to collect cards and battle other players. Codes for virtual cards will be distributed through real Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) card packs.

“Similar to the tabletop version of the Pokémon TCG that fans have loved for over 25 years, Pokémon TCG Live features fan-favourite activities like building decks and battling with friends, as well as gameplay modes and daily quests for all types of players regardless of their skill level,” writes The Pokémon Company in a recent blog post.

The card game’s beta will only be available to Canadian players on iOS and Android. Strangely, the title isn’t coming to the Switch. It’s unclear when the final version of this new virtual take on TCG will release.

Dear one star Uber riders, you can now see how your rating is calculated

Ever wonder why you got a specific rating from your Uber driver? A new update might help you figure out why.

The rideshare app now allows all riders to see how their rating is calculated through its new privacy center. Riders can see how many drivers gave them one-star ratings, five-star ratings, and everything in between.

Here’s how to access it:

  • Open the settings menu, go to privacy, and tap privacy center.
  • Swipe to the right and tap on the tile that says, ‘would you like to see a summary of how you use Uber.’
  • Go down to the “browse your data” section and tap the tile that says ‘view my ratings’ to access the breakdown.

Uber reports riders in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, London, and Hamilton have the lowest average rating and points to tips on its blog that can help riders boast that one star to five.

Riders should be ready for their driver’s arrival to not waste time. Back seat passengers should also buckle up, as studies show doing so lowers the risk of drivers getting injured in a crash.

Riders should never leave a mess for drivers to clean up or leave any belongings behind when getting ready to go. Also, avoid slamming the door. Uber says it’s one of the main reasons why drivers deduct stars.

5G has improved mobile experiences but its infancy means the best is yet to come: report

The world saw a new era of internet connectivity when the United States and South Korea became the first countries to launch a commercial 5G network in April 2019.

Numerous nations followed in their footsteps and joined the global impact, according to a report by Opernsignal examining the effects of 5G.

The report found average download speeds have increased across the globe.

Speeds in 98 percent of the 5G market have also increased at the slowest hour of the day. Speed drops because of the increased use of mobile data in the evening, typically between 8 and 9pm or 9 and 10pm.

In Canada, average download speeds almost doubled with the launch of 5G during the slowest hour of the day. Speeds increased from 28.4Mbps to 54.7Mbps.

But this wasn’t the case for every market. The report points out that the size of improvements varies greatly because of the uneven distribution of 5G. For example, in 12 markets, including Puerto Rico and Kuwait, the speed was twice as fast during the slowest hour of the day in 2018 compared to 2021.

In other markets, including Belgium and Singapore, the speed only increased by a quarter at most.

The download speed in Canada was 42.5Mbps before 5G was launched. In the fourth quarter of 2021, this number has increased to 62Mbps. According to the report, Canada offers the fourth-best download experience across 100 different markets, down from its previous position of third.

Despite all the improvements 5G has brought, Opensignal says the best of the network is still to come.

They expect speeds to continue to rise as more spectrum becomes available, including in markets that already have 5G.

More versions of 5G services will also release, as we saw with 4G.

When 4G first rolled out, smartphones had to utilize the 3G network for phone calls since they could only connect to one 4G spectrum band. Now 4G phones can be used to make and receive calls and connect to multiple spectrum bands, creating a faster experience.

The report notes numerous versions of 5G are being worked on and will release soon.

Nintendo shutting down Wii U and 3DS eShops, dealing big blow to preservation

Nintendo has confirmed that it will be shutting down its Wii U and 3DS eShops in late March 2023.

This means that you won’t be able to make any digital purchases — including downloads of free titles and demos — on these systems after that period. However, Nintendo says previously purchased content will remain available to redownload.

While it’s not exactly surprising that digital storefronts for old, discontinued hardware are being closed, the bigger issue here relates to game preservation. That’s because these eShops offered large catalogues of older titles from the likes of the NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy and DS eras — not to mention actual Wii U and 3DS titles.

With these stores shutting down, Nintendo’s only solution is its Switch Online, which offers a selection of titles from the NES, SNES and N64. However, these catalogues are far smaller; they lack Game Boy and DS titles and miss such classics as Final Fantasy VI and Super Mario RPG (SNES).

Further, they’re locked behind a subscription service, so there’s no way to actually own the games. (To be sure, one may argue the legitimacy of “ownership” of a digitally purchased title, but regardless, the Switch offers no option to buy individual NES, SNES or N64 titles.)

Making this even worse is that Nintendo says it “currently [has] no plans to offer classic content in other ways.” The closure of the Wii U and 3DS eShops wouldn’t be as much of an issue if Nintendo was going to make those older titles available on the Switch, but evidently, that’s not in the cards. This is despite the fact that the Switch has a user base that’s now larger than the 3DS and Wii U’s combined.

The company even addressed the issue of game preservation in a since-deleted, decidedly tone-deaf FAQ:

“Once it is no longer possible to purchase software in Nintendo eShop on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, many classic games for past platforms will cease to be available for purchase anywhere. Will you make classic games available to own some other way? If not, then why? Doesn’t Nintendo have an obligation to preserve its classic games by continually making them available for purchase?

Across our Nintendo Switch Online membership plans, over 130 classic games are currently available in growing libraries for various legacy systems. The games are often enhanced with new features such as online play.

We think this is an effective way to make classic content easily available to a broad range of players. Within these libraries, new and longtime players can not only find games they remember or have heard about, but other fun games they might not have thought to seek out otherwise.

We currently have no plans to offer classic content in other ways.”

It’s another failure on Nintendo’s part to ensure game preservation, an issue with which the industry as a whole already struggles. While many classic films and TV shows remain accessible on home media and streaming services, it’s regularly harder to play older video games. This has led fans to turn to piracy to play games that companies like Nintendo are otherwise not making available through any modern platform.

Nintendo’s stance looks even worse when compared to main competitors Xbox and PlayStation. The Microsoft-owned gaming label has been the biggest proponent for game preservation as of late, making many popular original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles available on Xbox One and Series X/S.

While PlayStation’s offerings aren’t quite as flexible, the company does still offer some PS2 titles for purchase alongside a larger PS3 catalogue through its PlayStation Now streaming service. The company is also reportedly planning an expanded subscription service, codenamed Spartacus, for early 2022 that will offer PS1, PS2 and PSP titles. This is all on top of continuing to operate its PS3 and PS Vita storefronts following fan outcry over plans to shut them down.
