Google Meet adds 1080p video option for select Workspace users

Many thought that video conferencing platforms like Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams would die down as the COVID-19 pandemic winds down. However, the platforms have stuck around in some capacity, aiding hybrid workers and students alike.

Google is constantly updating its video conferencing tool, Google Meet, to provide a better experience for its users. The Mountain View, California-based tech giant, is now enhancing its video call quality with a resolution upgrade.

Select Google Workplace users would now be able to set their video resolution to 1080p instead of 720p. This update is mainly aimed at Business and Enterprise users, although Google One subscribers with 2TB or more of storage space can also access the feature.

“Note that additional bandwidth is required to be able to send 1080p video — Meet will automatically adjust the resolution if the device is bandwidth constrained,” reads Google’s blog post about the update. Further, the new resolution is apparently only available on the web, and of course, you need a 1080p webcam (built-in or external) to take advantage of the improved video resolution. The new high-definition resolution will be off by default, and eligible users will be prompted before entering the meeting about the new 1080p option.

The feature started rolling out on Tuesday, April 25th, for Rapid Release users, and it can potentially take over 15 days for the feature to be widely available. The feature will start rolling out for Scheduled Release domains on May 4th, and it can take up to 15 days from the date for the feature to be visible,

Also worth noting is that the new feature isn’t available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, Nonprofits, and G Suite Basic and Business customers. It also won’t be available to personal Google Accounts.

An “action” button might still be coming to the iPhone 15 Pro this fall

A reprogrammable “action” button might still make its way into the iPhone 15 Pro series, according to a new report from 9to5Mac. The latest obtained CAD files indicate the new button is still part of the phone chassis — albeit without any of the fancy haptic technology previously rumoured.

A new haptic button was previously expected to make its debut on the 2023 Pro i{hones, alongside a haptic volume rocker. These new buttons wouldn’t physically click. Rather, they’d simulate the sensation of a click using haptic vibrations.

Newer reports indicated Apple is no longer going through with solid-state buttons due to “unresolved technical issues.”

If the action button does make it into the final product, it looks like it will click more conventionally. The new button would replace the iconic ringer switch in favour of something that can be assigned to various functions.

The iPhone 15 Pro lineup is expected to launch in September.

Google Lens’ new logo is a nod to its previous designs

Google Lens is getting a new logo that combines elements from its previous designs.

The technology that’s allowed users to ‘search what they see’ has had a few different sketches act as its logo in the past, with the earliest being a rounded-off circle and, more recently, a camera-shaped icon. Now, as told on Twitter by the Google News Telegram group moderator @Nail_Sadykov, another logo that blends the two designs will take over.

The icon also brings back the green circle in the bottom corner of the logo, which was featured in both the 2019 logo and the original.

It appears the new, modernized logo was first seen in Chrome Canary v114, a software that’s historically acted as a testing ground for the company’s visual updates. Despite the new logo not showing up in places like the Pixel Launcher, the Lens listing on the Play Store, and Chrome’s new tab pages, it is visible with ‘v14.17.16’ of Google Search on Android.

The new logo will look to keep enough familiarity to be easily recognizable but provides enough of a change to be aesthetically noticeable.

Microsoft begins rolling out support for iPhone in its Phone Link app

The latest feature coming to Microsoft’s Phone Link app is iPhone support. The new Windows 11 app update is rolling out globally, according to Microsoft, and will be available for all PC users by the middle of May.

With the update, iPhone users can access phone calls, notifications, and iMessage threads directly on their PCs. While it’s a step in the right direction for cross-platform compatibility, the implementation is limited.

iMessage support is limited to one-on-one conversations, so don’t expect to participate in green bubble group chats from your laptop. Other functionality, like quick camera roll access, is only available for Android phones.

Microsoft has been slowly but steadily providing updates to Phone Link, including an interface redesign and an ‘Instant Hotspot’ feature last year.

The Phone Link app is available in the Microsoft Store and works on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Google pushes out Android 14 Beta 1.1 to compatible devices

Google has released the latest Android 14 beta update, version 1.1, to those in the Android Beta for Pixel program. Being a “.1” release, the build is focused on patching bugs.

Android 14 Beta 1 released a couple of weeks ago, and brought with it several UI changes and tweaks. Unfortunately, it also came with some new crashes and glitches.

Thankfully, Google appears to be hearing the complaints, as illustrated by the release notes.

The company outlines the following fixes:

  • – Fixed an issue where the system UI crashed when trying to access the Wallpaper & Style screen either through the Settings app, or by long-pressing from the home screen. (Issue #277938424)
  • – Fixed some issues that prevented fingerprint unlock from being used. (Issue #272403537)
  • – Fixed an issue where the status bar did not display the mobile network. (Issue #277892134)
  • – Fixed an issue that prevented a SIM card or eSIM from being detected or activated in some cases. (Issue #278026119)
  • – Fixed an issue where the lock screen displayed a message with an unresolved string placeholder when Smart Lock was enabled. (Issue #278011057)

Devices in the Android Beta for Pixel program can expect the update to arrive over-the-air, according to Google. The full list of compatible devices can be found on the Android for Developers website.

The next beta release of Android 14 is expected to arrive sometime in May.

iOS 16 may have a hidden tool that restricts features based on user location

It’s been rumoured that Apple is testing hidden functionality within iOS 16 that restricts users from accessing certain features based on location.

The tech giant can already restrict users based on location, but only through hard-coding techniques. This means that most restrictions are tied to the device’s region, most often by where the hardware is from or through software settings. However, according to a new 9to5Mac report, Apple has been working on a new way to determine where a user is located.

The new system is internally named ‘countryd’ and was silently added to iOS 16.2. It is not being used for anything so far. Still, it has the ability to combine multiple data points, such as users’ country code from their Wi-Fi router, current GPS location and SIM card information to find out what country the phone is in.

Code seen by 9to5Mac has shown that the system is designed to set restrictions determined by government regulators. An example of these local restrictions is FaceTime not being available in the UAE.

Apple may be planning on introducing this system as a means of detecting activities such as sideloading.

If you don’t know, sideloading is the process of installing third-party apps by alternative methods. In the case of iPhones, it would mean gaining apps or additional software from somewhere other than the App Store.

Bloomberg reported in December 2022 that due to pressure from the European Union (EU), Apple reportedly planned to introduce sideloading in iOS. More recently, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that sideloading would be coming in iOS 17, but exclusively in Europe.

The new ‘countryd’ system makes a lot more sense with that information, as it would allow the company to determine if the device is being used in an EU country and whether or not to allow sideloading.

It’s still unclear if Apple will announce sideloading as a new iOS feature or how the change will be implemented. iOS 17 will be officially revealed at Apple’s WWDC in June 2023.

In related news, iOS 17 could also feature changes to the lock screen, Apple Music and more.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 might be the thinnest Fold yet

Samsung might have put its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold on a diet, according to reliable leaker Ice Universe.

The dimensions look to be similar to the previous generation, strengthening the idea that the overall footprint and display sizes will remain the same as before. In this case, it’s the thickness and weight that are most noteworthy in the leak.

When folded, the Fold 5 is tipped to be 13.4 mm. By comparison, the Fold 4 has a range of thickness from 14.2 mm to 15.8 mm. Not only will the device be thinner than the outgoing model, but it appears it will also fold flatter than before.

Beyond thickness, the weight of the device is noteworthy in this leak. Coming in at 254 g, this would be an improvement over the Fold 4’s 263 g.

This latest leak backs up similar recent claims that the device will be a tad more slender than before. While this change is a welcome one, those who were hoping for a total redesign appear to be out of luck this time around.

A more substantial change to the Fold form factor might still be on the way, according to a separate leak by Twitter user Revegnus. We might just have to wait until 2024 to see it take shape.

The Fold 5 isn’t the only Samsung foldable subject to rumours galore — the Flip 5 is also on the receiving end of various leaks.

Samsung is expected to officially announce both the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 in an event this summer.

Check out this OLED touchscreen with pop-up, tactile buttons

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University are pushing the limitations of OLED panels by creating a touchscreen device that you can actually feel.

The technology, called Flat Panel Haptics, has been detailed in a new paper submitted by Carnegie Mellon University. It’s being looked into at the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Hamburg, Germany.

Although similar iterations have been attempted by larger companies, such as Apple’s Taptic engine, this prototype allows users to find virtual buttons solely through touch. A major reason that most laptops still feature fully tactical keyboards despite having the technology widely available for touchscreens comes down to the ability for users to get more done when relying on touch alone.

The video below gives an in-depth look into the electroosmotic pumps being used in the prototype.

This concept has been attempted by other companies before, most notably by Bosch and its automotive touch screen. Often, it works by having bumps coinciding with on-screen buttons temporarily form on touchscreen panels providing tactile feedback to users. The primitive design is noted as being clunky, making pocket accessibility for something like a phone a challenge.

The researchers have managed to get the pop-up buttons to measure almost five millimetres in height, with enough pressure and rigidity to make them feel solid when pressed.

Current OLED panels are not quite flexible enough to allow for structures that large to pop up. However, when layered with new embedded electroosmotic pumps, a bump can still be formed for a user’s finger to differentiate between the on-screen display’s keys.

Although there are still some limitations on how a fully tactile touchscreen would be implemented into tech products if the pop-up buttons are eventually scaled down to fit as pixels on an OLED display, it could be a major breakthrough in everything from phone keyboards to automotive infotainment systems.
