Samsung announces new Galaxy Tab S8 tablet line with massive 14-inch Tab Ultra

With the reveal of Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab S8 lineup, it doesn’t look like the South Korean tech giant is giving up on the tablet space anytime soon.

There are three tablets in the new lineup: the Tab S8, the Tab S8+ and the Tab S8 Ultra. All three devices will be available to pre-order in Canada today, February 9th, alongside the new Galaxy S22 series of smartphones.

Galaxy Tab S8 — $899
Galaxy Tab S8+ — $1,150
Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra — $1,500

Samsung is also including a free keyboard cover and Galaxy Buds 2 with pre-orders through its website.

Overall, the Tab S8 line promises to be one of Samsung’s more exciting lineups in the tablet space given the wide variety of sizes that are offered this year.

Galaxy Tab S8 and S8+

The Tab S8 is the smallest of the three tablets with an 11-inch display and a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution. On the other hand, the mid-sized Tab S8+ features a 12.4-inch screen with a 2800 x 1752  pixel resolution AMOLED display. Both tablets offer an adaptive refresh rate that can go all the way up to 120Hz.

Since the Tab S8 is the smallest,  it’s also the lightest at 503g, making it a little heavier than a 480g entry-level iPad. Considering the fact that it packs a larger screen, this makes sense. I’ve used a few 11-inch Samsung tablets in the past, and it’s a really great size for a media consumption device. Samsung’s Tab S8+ weighs 567g.

All three Tab S8 series tablets feature two cameras on the rear, including a 13-megapixel main shooter and a 6-megapixel ultrawide. The two mid-range tablets offer a single 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor on the front, which Samsung says is designed for video calls. There are also three mics in all three tablets, including the Tab S8 Ultra.

Both tablets feature 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. However, Samsung says that storage can expand to up to 1TB with a MicroSD card. In the battery department, both tablets are capable of 45W charging and should last for a day or more of typical use. The Tab S8 has an 8,000mAh cell, while the Tab S8+ has a 10,090mAh battery.

Samsung’s press release says that the tablets pack a 4nm octa-core Samsung chip. I’d expect the processor to be a variation of the Samsung Exynos 2200 chipset, but as of right now, that remains unclear.

The smaller Tab S8 features a fingerprint reader built into the side of the tablet. On the other hand, the Tab S8+ has an in-display reader.

Both tablets also come with a Samsung S Pen in the box but don’t include a charger. Further, only the Tab S8+ comes with the new Samsung S Pen with reduced latency. Both devices feature small magnetic pads on the back to stick the stylus to.

The Tab S8 and S8+will be available in ‘Graphite’ and ‘Pink Gold’ colourways. The S8+ is also available in ‘Silver.’

Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra

In a surprise move this year, Samsung has also dropped a tablet that’s bigger than Apple’s new MacBook Pro. The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra features a 14.6-inch Super AMOLED display with a 2960 x 1848 pixel resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

The S8 Ultra is, of course, the heaviest of the three coming in at 726g. Like the other new tablets, this model features 13-megapixel and 6-megapixel cameras on the rear and a 12-megapixel ultrawide. To spice things up, the S8 Ultra also offers a 12-megapixel regular sensor. This means it has two selfie cameras and a little notch to house them in. Samsung says that the camera is capable of keeping you in frame when you move around during a call, similar to Apple’s Centre Stage.

The Tab S8 Ultra also comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Its internal storage can be expanded up to 1TB with a MicroSD card. This extra RAM should make it a bit more powerful than the other two tablets, but it features same 8-core chipset as its smaller counterparts.

Of course, since Tab S8 Ultra is bigger, it also includes a more expansive 11,200mAh cell. With the extra RAM and a larger screen, I’d expect it to last roughly as long as the other two tablets in Samsung’s 2022 lineup.

Unlike the other two tablets, the Tab S8 ultra comes in ‘Graphite.’ It also comes with the new S Pen in the box.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is this year’s top-tier S series device. First off, the device looks like a fusion of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the S21 Ultra — a perfect combination of the two smartphones. The handset features up to 1TB of memory, up to 12GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor.

What’s most notable about the Galaxy S22 Ultra is it includes the fan-favourite S Pen. This new S Pen supports 2.8ms latency, which should make it feel very smooth. Additionally, the S Pen features a more advanced version of handwriting that can digitize your messy handwriting into easy-to-read notes, and it works with up to 88 languages.

Further, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 6.8-inch display that offers a 1440 x 3080-pixel resolution and 120Hz variable refresh rate that can reduce to 1Hz when looking at static images. Additionally, it supports a 240Hz touch sample rate when gaming. A touch sample rate or touch-sensing refers to the frequency at which the smartphone tracks the movement of your finger. Typical devices have a 60Hz touch sample rate, which tracks the screen every 16.6ms, while, for example, the iPhone 13 series features a 120Hz touch sample rate that cuts the time by half.

The 240Hz reduces this to 4.15ms, which should make it seem like the handset reacts instantly to each touch.

Camera-wise, the S22 Ultra sports a 108-megapixel primary shooter with an f/1.8 aperture, a 10-megapixel telephoto shooter with 10x optical zoom with an f/4.9 aperture, another 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom with an f/2.4 aperture, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide shooter with a 120-degree field-of-view, and lastly, a 40-megapixel selfie shooter with an f/2.2 aperture.

The S22 Ultra’s low-light videography and photography have improved thanks to pixels that are 1.23x bigger than the S21 Ultra’s, allowing the camera to capture more light, according to Samsung. The bigger pixels combined with the company’s multi-frame exposure technology should allow the S22 Ultra to capture bright high-resolution images even in low-light. Alongside this technology, the company’s AI reportedly processes 4x more data to sharpen details and reduce noise in low-light images.

There’s also a new auto-framing feature for videography that can detect people within five meters and track up to ten people for better group shots. When you tap a specific person’s face the video automatically shifts and adjusts to keep the subject in the centre.

Samsung says it has upgraded its ‘Portrait mode’ by improving its AI Stereo Depth Map and making depth photos pop in a more natural way. There’s also better studio lighting that should improve selfies, and portrait photos now work at night.

Additionally, Samsung has improved its manual photo-taking mode, allowing users to export 16-bit raw images. Finally, the handset sports a 5,000mAh battery and 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging.

If you want to know more about the Galaxy S22 Ultra you can check out my hands-on.

Samsung Galaxy S22 /S22+

In a sense, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 and S22+ are in a different ballpark than the S22 Ultra. Both phones look similar to last year’s S21 and S21+ and lack the S22 Ultra’s S Pen stylus.

The S22 features a 6.1-inch FHD+ display, whereas the S22+ offers an S22+ FHD+ panel. Both devices sport a 120Hz refresh rate with a 240Hz touch sample rate when gaming.

Both phones only sport 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. Additionally, the devices offer Android 12 and One UI 4.1, 5G, LTRE and Wi-Fi 6E for the Galaxy S22+ and the Wi-Fi 6 for the Galaxy S22.

Additionally, the handset sports a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a 120-degree field of view. There’s also a 50-megapixel primary shooter with an f/1.8 aperture, a 10-megapixel telephoto shooter with 3x optical zoom and f/2.4 aperture, and lastly, a 10-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture.

The S22 sports a 3,700mAh battery, 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. On the other hand, the S22+ features a 4,500mAh power cell with 45W wired charging like the S22 Ultra and 15W wireless charging.

How to watch Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event

Samsung is ready to reveal its latest S series flagship devices at its Unpacked event on February 9th at 10am ET/7am PT.

The event comes almost four months after Samsung held its ‘Unpacked 2‘ stream to showcase the Galaxy Z Flip 3 Bespoke Edition and One UI 4.

From what we know so far, Samsung is expected to unveil its latest S Series flagship devices, which include the S22, s22+ and S22 Ultra, along with the Tab S8 series, which includes the Tab S8, Tab S8+ and the Tab S8 Ultra.

Samsung dropped the Galaxy Note line last year, and it’s unlikely we’ll see it back this year. Consequently, Samsung’s top-tier flagship, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, is likely to include a Note-like design, an S-Pen, and top-of-the line specifications, while the other S22 and S22+ are expected to sport a design similar to its predecessors.

The company can also come out with a limited-edition Z Fold 3 or Z Flip 3, or updates for its latest Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, though we haven’t heard of any rumours surrounding those products.

Whatever might be the case, you can follow along with MobileSyrup’s coverage of the event on our homepage as well as on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or check the showcase out for yourself on Samsung’s YouTube page, Samsung’s website or from the stream embedded below at 10am ET/7am PT.

Waze adds cupid voice directions just in time for Valentine’s Day

Back in August of last year, Waze users were greeted by a quality update that allowed you to set Halo’s Master Chief or Escharum as the navigation app’s voice. Then later in December, the navigation app added Santa’s voice to give you directions.

Now, just in time for Valentine’s Day, Waze is adding a new ‘cupid mood,’ allowing you to use cupid as your personal direction assistant along with a ‘LoveWagon’ vehicle icon that you can drive around in style.

According to Waze, the new direction assistant will spew random words of wisdom and hot takes about the state of dating in 2022. I’m not entirely sure if this is the sort of information I want to hear while driving, but it could be a fun assistant to try out.

It’s unclear how long the feature will be available, though it likely won’t stick around much more than a week or two after Valentine’s Day. You can enable the new cupid experience by navigating to the ‘My Waze’ section of Waze’s settings and clicking on the cupid banner. Alternatively, you can enable the setting by opening this link directly from your mobile.

Listen to examples of the rather annoying Cupid voice snippets below:

Reminder: Super Bowl LVI will not feature U.S. ads in Canada

The passage of time has been hard to track amid the COVID-19 pandemic, so you’d be forgiven for forgetting about the whole “Super Bowl ads” situation in Canada.

You know, the one where Canadians called for the big-budget, celebrity-filled American ads for which the big game is known?

Well, as a reminder: following a December 2019 ruling, American ads are still not permitted to run during Canadian Super Bowl broadcasts. That applies to this year’s Super Bowl LVI, which kicks off on Sunday, February 13th at 6:30pm ET. The National Football Conference (NFC) champion Los Angeles Rams and the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Cincinnati Bengals are facing off.

This ruling was made after Bell argued that it would lose millions in ad revenue if U.S. ads were played instead. This was also controversial, as many football fans have argued that the U.S. ads are an integral part of the Super Bowl experience.

Therefore, Canadians will need to find other ways to watch the ads, which feature everyone from Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost to Lindsay Lohan and Guy Fieri. At the very least, the usual prominent movie and TV show trailers — including Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings show — should be released online promptly for easy viewing.

Telus expands its Internet for Good plan to seniors in Quebec

Telus has launched its Internet for Good plan for seniors living in the province of Quebec.

Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) recipients can access two different unlimited data packages. Internet 25 costs $9.95 a month and offers speeds of 25 Mbps. Internet 50 is priced at $19.95 a month and has speeds of up to 50 Mbps.

The program is available to residents in Quebec City, Eastern Quebec, and the Mauricie region.

Those eligible can submit their application on Telus’ website. Applicants must provide a copy of their T4A form from the Old Age Security program to prove their GIS status.

If applicants can’t apply online or don’t have an email address, they can submit an application through the mail.

“Our program and our network’s fast and reliable connectivity enables the most vulnerable senior citizens to continue with daily activities like learning remotely, accessing virtual health care services, and staying in touch with their family and friends,” Marie-Christine D’Amours, vice-president of home solutions and customer experience at Telus in Quebec, said in a statement.

The program was first introduced to Quebec in 2018 but was only available to low-income families and those living with disabilities. Telus estimates the expansion will impact 30,000 eligible seniors, in addition to the 45,000 families and individuals the program was already serving.

The company introduced this program to seniors in Alberta and B.C last month.

Ford possibly working with China’s CATL on EV battery tech in Ontario

As Ford gears up to expand its electric vehicle (EV) strategy in Canada, the legacy automaker is reportedly in talks with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) in China to supply batteries to its new plant in Oakville, Ontario.

These discussions haven’t been made public yet by CATL or Ford. That said, a source who spoke with The Logic said that Canadian officials are raising concerns about China becoming a significant EV battery supplier since it has a reputation for using its market power to advance its political mandates in the past.

In the tech space, this has been most recently evident in the ongoing Huawei scandal.

CATL is already the world’s largest power battery builder, but even U.S. officials and Ford’s American offices are also aware of the meetings. Part of the hesitancy also comes from wanting to wait and see the results of President Biden’s Build Back Better bill in the United States.

This bill could change things for EV manufacturers in the U.S. and the surrounding industries, including EV battery manufacturing. With this in mind, several major investments in the space in North America have been put on hold to see if the Build Back Better bill outcome leans in their favour, according to the Finacial Post report.

If the deal does go through, CATL likely won’t build a battery factory in Ontario or even Canada for that matter. Instead, it will supply batteries to Ford’s perspective EV plants in Oakville. Sources say that the talks are still early and not close to being finalized.

When Ford first announced it was retooling the Oakville plant it was looking to assemble a new battery pack design by 2025

Ford’s Chinese division already uses batteries from CATL.
