Google rolls out February update to Pixel 3a and newer

Google Pixel smartphones have started receiving their February security update. Unlike the last few updates, this update should also hit your Pixel 6 series device.

Here’s what’s included in this patch:

Camera
  • Fix for issue causing device reboot when using camera in certain conditions [Pixel 6, 6 Pro].
Bluetooth
  • Fix for issue causing audio playback to disconnect while using certain Bluetooth devices [Pixel 6, 6 Pro].
  • General improvements for Bluetooth audio quality with certain media codecs [Pixel 6, 6 Pro].
Framework
  • Fix for issue causing keyboard to display over input text in certain conditions [Pixel 3a and newer].
Telephony
  • Connectivity fixes for specific carrier networks [Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5].

Hopefully, this update doesn’t come with any bugs last December’s update. Google’s update page says that this should be rolling out over the coming weeks. In theory, it should be hitting your Pixel phones in Canada, but oddly enough neither the Rogers or Telus OS schedules mention Pixel smartphones.

To update your phone navigate to Settings > System > System Update > Check for Updates.

Let us know in the comments below if your Pixel smartphone has received the patch.

The Rings of Power trailer to air during the Super Bowl

We’ll finally catch our first real glimpse of Amazon’s anticipated, The Rings of Power, The Lord of the Rings TV series, this Sunday February 13th, during the Super Bowl.

Amazon doesn’t specify when the video will air during the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals game, according to Variety. However, similar to several other movie and game trailers that have dropped during Super Bowl in the past, it will likely quickly appear on YouTube very quickly after it airs.

The Rings of Power officially hits Prime Video on September 2nd.

The TV show’s eight-episode first season stars Peter Mullan, Benjamin Walker, Trystan Gravelle and more. Back in January, Amazon released 23 different posters showcasing the hands of the actors featured in the series. The Rings of Power is the most expensive TV series ever, with the first season costing $465 million USD (roughly $589 million CAD).

The series’ plot follows the creation of the original rings of power and takes place thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings films and books.

Apple could launch 4 new M2-powered Macs later this year

Along with a report surrounding a new iPhone SE/iPad Air and a fast-approaching March 8th hardware event, Bloomberg’s often-reliable Mark Gurman is back at it again with a rumour surrounding Apple’s future Mac plans.

Gurman says that along with one new Mac launching this spring — likely an M1 Pro/Max-powered Mac mini — at least four new M2 Macs are currently in Apple’s pipeline.

This list includes a new MacBook Air, a refreshed entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro and a 24-inch iMac. There’s also a possibility we could see a new 27-inch iMac in 2022, though recent rumours point to an August or September release, instead of a summer reveal.

The notorious source of Apple leaks doesn’t expand much on this report in his Power On newsletter, though he does mention that the new 13-inch MacBook Pro will likely ditch the Touch Bar and says it will lack the higher-end Pro models’ impressive ProMotion display.

In other Apple-related news, Gurman says that Apple’s new iPhone SE will feature the same iPhone 8-like design as its predecessor, but with a faster A15 chip and 5G support. The new iPad Air will also be similar to its 2020 counterpart, with the primary change being a more powerful A15 chip.

Toronto residents can now pay their bills to the City through MyToronto Pay

Toronto residents now have a new option to pay their property tax and utility bills through MyToronto Pay.

The secure option allows users to make immediate payments, schedule future payments, see how much they owe, examine transaction history, and request emailed receipts. Residents can directly pay through their bank accounts or debit or credit card.

PayIt, an American company specializing in making payments through government agencies, created the application.

“We are thrilled that the City of Toronto has put its confidence in PayIt to deliver a truly modern experience,” founder and CEO John Thomson said in a statement.

“MyToronto Pay provides citizens with a safe, secure and easy way to pay their bills from anywhere, using their desktop or mobile device.”

This partnership with the City of Toronto is the first time the company has worked with a government agency outside of the United States.

Mozilla added its VPN to the excellent Multi-Account Containers add-on for Firefox

Mozilla is making its ‘Multi-Account Containers’ add-on for Firefox more powerful by allowing users to combine containers with a virtual private network (VPN).

Multi-Account Containers, for those unfamiliar with the add-on, allows Firefox users to “contain” different online accounts into separate spaces, all within a single browser window. Containers also isolate browsing history, cookies, tracking information, and more, making them great for privacy.

For example, if you have multiple accounts for an online service like email, Multi-Account Containers would let you log in to those accounts without having to deal with annoying account switching or other issues.

Multi-Account Containers have been available as a Firefox add-on since 2017, but there are several other extensions that leverage the capability as well. I’ve used Firefox containers for a while now, but I haven’t installed that specific extension. Instead, a combo of Mozilla’s ‘Facebook Container‘ add-on and the ‘Temporary Container‘ add-on has worked fine for me.

The former automatically opens Facebook pages in a separate container to help prevent the company from tracking you across the web, while the latter lets me create temporary containers with the click of a button that gets deleted when I’m done with them. Beyond that, I use a ‘Work’ container and a ‘Personal’ container to help keep my various work and personal accounts separate.

Anyway, the new VPN capability only adds to the already excellent capabilities of Multi-Account Containers by allowing users to set specific VPN settings for each container. For example, you could set your ‘Banking’ container to always open using a VPN located in your home country while you use a different container tab using a VPN located in the U.S. to browse the American Netflix catalogue. It’s worth noting that if you don’t use Mozilla’s VPN service, you can click the ‘Advanced Proxy Settings’ button in Multi-Account Containers to set any proxy you want.

Alongside the Multi-Account Containers and VPN crossover, Mozilla announced that its VPN ‘multi-hop’ feature, which lets users route traffic through two different servers, is now available on Android and iOS.

You can learn more about using Multi-Account Containers with VPNs here.
