Nvidia’s DLSS 3 graphic upscaler is expanding to more games

The latest version of Nvidia’s AI-powered Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), DLSS 3, is expanding to more games.

The announcement comes ahead of next week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California. Additionally, the company is also publicly releasing the DLSS Frame Generation plug-in, allowing developers to adopt the technology with ease.

Nvidia first introduced DLSS in 2018. The feature essentially boosts in-game performance by using an image upscaler. It forces the title to render at a lower resolution, making it less intensive for your GPU to render frames, and uses an AI algorithm to display the game the way it would look if it was rendered at a higher resolution like 4K. With DLSS 3, which is powered by the fourth-gen Tensor Cores and Optical Flow Accelerator on GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs, the feature uses AI to create additional high-quality frames to upscale the look of your titles.

“Neural graphics has revolutionized gaming since its introduction with NVIDIA DLSS, and we’re now taking it to new heights,” said Matt Wuebbling, vice president of global GeForce marketing at Nvidia. “PC gaming super-franchises such as Diablo and Forza Horizon and Bethesda’s new Redfall are raising the bar for image quality with stunning graphics while using DLSS to keep gameplay smooth as silk.”

The expansion also includes the integration of DLSS 3 into Unreal Engine with the upcoming 5.2 updates and Nvidia’s Streamline, an “open-source, cross-vendor framework that simplifies the integration of super-resolution technologies in 3D games and apps.”

According to Nvidia, DLSS is used in over 270 titles and applications, while DLSS 3 is available in 28 released games, and is reportedly being adopted seven times faster than DLSS 2. The company’s continued marketing push, along with the introduction of new tools, will ensure DLSS 3 adoption grows even more rapidly.

The three new titles being updated to DLSS 3 are Diablo IV, Forza Horizon 5, and Redfall. DLSS 3 for Forza Horizon 5 will come as an update on March 28th, while integration with Redfall and Diablo 4 will arrive on May 2nd and June 6th, respectively.

“Supporting smooth gameplay in Diablo IV is a priority for Blizzard,” said Michael Bukowski, Diablo IV technical director at Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re excited by the high frame rate of Diablo IV running on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series hardware and DLSS 3.”

DLSS 3 support is expanding, and Nvidia is introducing new tools to simplify integration and adoption for developers.

New Zellers Instagram Stickers let you add a winking Zeddy Bear to your Stories

HBC’s Zellers revival and its relentless pursuit of online social media relevancy continues — this time, with new Instagram Stickers inspired by the iconic retail chain.

As Canada’s foremost Zellers reporter, I’m mandated to write a 162-word blog post about this move. The Stickers are available within Instagram Stories and include the following: the Zellers logo, Zeddy winking, yay, wow, and a heart. To access the stickers, first launch a story and then next, click on the smiley face sticker icon and search, “Zellers.”

It’s unclear what the latter Stickers have to do with Zellers, but they could be tied in some way to the branding surrounding HBC’s revival of the chain within HBC stores.

In a recent press release, HBC confirmed that on March 23rd, all of its Ontario and Alberta Hudson’s Bay locations that feature in-store Zellers locations will open. Zellers’ online store will also launch on the same day.

MobileSyrup will have more on Zellers’ comeback in the coming weeks.

iPhone 15 lineup reported to feature the smallest bezels yet on a phone

The next generation of iPhones is set to bring several significant changes to the table, including reportedly the smallest bezels on any smartphone ever.

Credible Apple leaker Ice Universe took to Twitter to reveal that the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s bezels will measure just 1.55 mm, a significant reduction compared to the 2.17 mm bezels found on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, offering a 28 percent decrease in bezel size.

According to the leaker, the current record for the smallest bezels is held by Xiaomi 13, measuring in at 1.81mm. Aside from the ultra-thin bezels, rumours suggest the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a smaller camera bump and adopt a slightly curved design, creating a seamless transition to the frame.

It also appears that the upcoming series will ditch individual volume buttons in favour of a unified one, while the mute button will be switched to a singular press button.

Samsung, Pixel devices vulnerable to exploits that expose calls and texts

Google’s ‘Project Zero,’ an in-house team of cybersecurity experts and analysts, warned in a new blog post of 18 different potential exploits in some phones using Samsung’s Exynos modems. That includes devices from Samsung, Vivo and Google’s own Pixel line (more on the specific devices below).

Project Zero warns that the exploits are severe and should be treated as zero-day vulnerabilities — the term ‘zero-day’ refers to recently-discovered exploits that software makers and manufacturers have zero days to fix. The exploits could allow malicious actors to compromise a device just by knowing the associated phone number, and the device’s owner wouldn’t notice a thing.

Specifically, four of the 18 exploits could allow a malicious actor to gain access to the data coming in and out of a device’s modem using just the phone number. That data includes things like phone calls and text messages. Particularly concerning is that this could be done remotely, while some of the other vulnerabilities would require local access to a device.

Project Zero recommends that people with affected devices install upcoming security updates as soon as possible to protect themselves from the vulnerability, though when those updates will arrive varies by manufacturer. Google included a patch for some of the flaws in its March 2023 security update for Pixel phones, for example. Impacted devices include:

  • Samsung phones including the Galaxy S22 series, the Galaxy M33, M13, M12, A71, A53, A33, A21, A13, A12 and A04
  • Vivo phones including the S16, S15, S6, X70, X60 and X30
  • Google Pixel 6 and 7 series
  • Wearables using the Exynos W920 chipset
  • Vehicles that use the Exynos Auto T5123 chipset

Those with an affected device will want to take a few steps to mitigate risks until patches arrive. Project Zero advises people to turn off Wi-Fi calling and Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) — you should be able to find both of these in the Settings menu under Network & internet > SIMs, though the exact location may vary from device to device.

Project Zero reported the exploits to manufacturers in late 2022 and early 2024, but the team withheld publication for four other vulnerabilities due to the ongoing severity.

Bell, Virgin Plus offering free Galaxy Buds 2 with select Samsung phones

In the market for a new Samsung smartphone? You might want to get one from Bell or its flanker brand Virgin Plus since right now, the providers will give you a free pair of Galaxy Buds 2 with the purchase of select Samsung devices.

If you’d rather not go with Bell or Virgin, it’s worth noting that Telus and Koodo have a similar offer but only on the Galaxy S22 and S22 Ultra.

Bell’s Galaxy Buds 2 offer as of March 17th, 2023

Currently, Bell is offering free Galaxy Buds 2 with the purchase and activation of the:

Bell notes that customers need to activate the phones with Bell SmartPay (the name Bell uses for financing) on a two-year plan and that the Buds 2 will ship separately from the device itself. The offer is only available online.

Oddly, Bell’s website includes two sets of fine print (above) for the deal that list availability with alternate Samsung phones, like the Z Flip/Fold or the S22 series. However, when viewing those devices on Bell’s website, the free Buds 2 offer isn’t shown. One of the two sets of fine print also notes the offer is valid from December 6th, 2022, which seems extra odd.

Virgin Plus

As for Virgin Plus, it’s a little more straightforward. You can head to the provider’s devices page, filter by Samsung, and see which devices include the Buds 2 at a glance because Virgin actually put a label on each eligible device. Hurray for basic, clear communication with customers! Devices include:

Considering Virgin Plus currently offers double the data on its $60/10GB and $65/15GB plans, bringing them up to 20GB and 30GB, respectively, I’d argue Virgin is the way to go unless you desperately want 5G and to overpay for it. Unfortunately, if you’re getting a phone, you can’t get the $10/mo bill credit for 24 months.

Virgin’s offer also appears to be online only.

Telus and Koodo

Finally, as mentioned up top, Telus and Koodo have free Buds 2 available with the Galaxy S22 and S22 Ultra. As with Bell and Virgin, my recommendation would be to get the deal with Koodo and take advantage of the promotional $60/20GB or $65/30GB plans. You’ll save a bit of money compared to Telus and get more data.

Where to stream Bob Odenkirk’s first post-Better Call Saul series in Canada

After a critically acclaimed six seasons, the Bob Odenkirk-led Better Call Saul came to an end last August.

For many, it even surpassed the parent series Breaking Bad, and its absence has left an Albuquerque-sized hole in our hearts ever since. Thankfully, there’s a new AMC series starring Odenkirk that should help with that: Lucky Hank.

The comedy-drama series premieres on March 19th, with new episodes dropping every Sunday at 9pm ET/6pm PT. In it, Odenkirk plays a cantankerous college English professor whose mid-life crisis affects the lives of everyone around him. Notably, while the series is set in Pennsylvania, it was actually filmed in Vancouver.

Based on Richard Russo’s 1997 novel, Straight ManLucky Hank was developed by Paul Lieberstein (The Office) and Aaron Zelman (Law & Order) and co-stars Mireille Enos (The Killing), Olivia Scott Welch (Fear Street), Diedrich Bader (American Housewife), Sara Amini (Future Man), Cedric Yarbough (Speechless) and Suzanne Cryer (Silicon Valley). Lucky Hank also reunites Odenkirk with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul executive producer Mark Johnson.

Like Better Call Saul, AMC will air Lucky Hank on both its cable network and AMC+ streaming service. In Canada, AMC+ is available as an $8.99/month channel add-on for Amazon Prime Video. A 30-day free trial is also available.

While Odenkirk’s first series after Better Call Saul would have garnered attention regardless of quality, Lucky Hank has, thankfully, been quite well-received following its premiere at SXSW earlier this month.

It’s worth noting that only the first five seasons of Better Call Saul are streaming on Netflix Canada. The final season, which was at one point streaming on AMC+, isn’t currently on that — or any other — subscription streaming service.

Far Cry 5 gets PS5, Xbox Series X/S update to celebrate 5th anniversary

Ubisoft has rolled out a free update for Far Cry 5 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S that adds native 60fps support.

The update comes as part of the French publishing giant’s celebrations of the open-world shooter’s fifth anniversary. The current-gen update also includes support for 3840 x 2160 and 4K resolution on Series X and 1920 x 1080 on Series S. PS5 players can still play the game at 2880 x 1620 resolution.

Originally released on March 26th, 2018 on PS4, Xbox One and PC, Far Cry 5 follows a sheriff’s deputy as they try to stop a doomsday cult in rural Montana. Despite the American story and setting, though, the game was developed by the prolific Canadian studio, Ubisoft Montreal.

A free weekend for Far Cry 5 will run from March 23rd-27th, and the game is also 85 percent off on all platforms throughout the month.

Meanwhile, the most recent Far Cry game, Far Cry 6, launched on current- and last-gen hardware in October 2021 and follows a revolutionary’s efforts to topple a dictator in the Cuba-esque Yara.
