Google is working an augmented reality headset codenamed Project Iris

Google is reportedly working on an augmented reality (AR) headset codenamed Project Iris, according to The Verge.

Citing sources familiar with the project, the publication says that Google is working on releasing Project Iris in 2024. However, Google has only started to ramp up production of the device. It’s also unclear if the project will feature Pixel branding. The Pixel smartphone team is reportedly involved in working on some aspects of the AR headset’s hardware.

Google’s upcoming device is rumoured to use an outward-facing camera that blends computer graphics with a video feed from the real world, creating a mixed reality world. Further, “Google’s strategy is to use its data centers to remotely render some graphics and beam them into the headset via an internet connection,” according to the report.

Project Iris will not feature a glasses form factor, but rather ski goggles, says the report. Additionally, the headset is rumoured to feature an unspecified custom Google processor based on the tech giant’s Tensor chip, and will run on a version of Android.

Google has been very secretive with Project Iris. According to The Verge’s report, Google employees need special keycard access and must sign non-disclosure agreements before seeing the headset. There are currently 300 employees working on the project, but hundreds more will reportedly be added.

According to often-reliable Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple’s often-rumoured augmented reality headset has been pushed beyond its initial 20-22 release window. The headset is rumoured to feature dual 4K displays, several 3D sensors for inside tracking and a roughly $3,000 USD (approximately $3,763 CAD) price tag.

YouTube is shutting down its Originals program

YouTube is shutting down its Originals program in favour of investing in other areas of the platform.

YouTube’s chief business officer, Robert Kyncl, explained the closure over Twitter. Kyncl confirmed that part of the reason for the closure relates to Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s head of global content, leaving the company.

However, Kyncl indicated that YouTube Originals investments aim to have a “greater impact on even more creators. These include the growing Creator Shorts Fund for the TikTok short-form vertical video competitor, Black Voices Fund, YouTube Kids, and Live Shopping to name a few.”

Kyncl highlighted in his post that more than two million creators are now eligible for the YouTube Partner Program and that the creator community has never been more successful. He says that the platform has paid more than $30 billion to creators, artists and media companies over the past three years.

YouTube started its Originals program six years ago. YouTube Originals offers original films and series produced in collaboration with studios and YouTube personalities.

Cobra Kai, a current Netflix smash hit, was first a YouTube Original that premiered on YouTube Red (now known as YouTube Premium) back in 2018.

You might soon be able to view, mint, buy and sell NFTs on Instagram and Facebook

Meta-owned Instagram and Facebook are reportedly developing new tools that will allow its users to display their Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) as their profile pictures, according to a report from The Financial Times.

Meta, which has already emphasized that it wants to move away from its ‘social media company’ tag and shift its focus to building a virtual reality (VR) metaverse is reportedly planning to host its own NFT marketplace where users would be able to view, mint, buy and sell NFTs on the platform. These plans, however, are in their early stages, and could change.

In December, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri stated that the company was “actively exploring NFTs,” while Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg’s plans are already widely known by now.

Further, Meta’s reported NFT marketplace will make use of Facebook’s digital currency wallet Novi. “A lot of the supporting functionality relating to Novi will be powering the NFTs,” one person with knowledge of the plans told The Financial Times.

While the move is ambitious, Meta is rather late to the party. Twitter is already testing features to showcase NFTs while Reddit has already launched its CryptoSnoos NFT collection.

The move from Meta and Instagram could turn out lucrative. For what it’s worth, at the time of writing, a total of 30,339 NFT sales with a volume of $51 million have transacted today.

Intel purchases first next-gen chip-making tool set to arrive in 2024

Intel announced that it ordered the first of a new generation of chip-making machines from ASML, a Dutch manufacturer of photolithography systems.

The purchase is Intel’s latest move in a larger effort to get back on top of the chip game. Each of the new ASML machines, dubbed ‘Twinscan EXE:5200,’ cost on average $340 million USD (about $425 million CAD) and should arrive in 2024. It’s considered critical to advancing processor progress. One of the main ways chipmakers advance processors is through miniaturization. By shrinking chip circuitry, manufacturers can fit more into processors, enabling them to do more work.

Photolithography, which literally means “writing on stone with light” according to CNET, is core to the process of miniaturizing chip circuitry. Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) have both surpassed Intel in this regard thanks to the use of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light. The shorter wavelength of EUV allows manufacturers to inscribe finer patterns on silicon wafers.

CNET reports that Intel was late to the EUV game, but the company is now working to correct that. The company expects to start selling its first EUV chips in 2023 with processors based on the ‘Intel 4’ node — the company’s somewhat confusing new name for its 7nm process.

The new Twinscan EXE:5200 machines are scheduled to be delivered in 2024 for Intel operations beginning in 2025. The machine uses an advanced EUV tool with a high numeric aperture (NA) to inscribe even finer patterns on silicon wafers.

In simpler terms, that means we’re still several years out from seeing Intel’s more advanced and hopefully more competitive NA EUV process (likely as part of the Intel 18A process slated for 2025). Intel is only just ramping up EUV with Intel 4, which was originally supposed to launch in 2021 but was infamously delayed (and renamed).

With Samsung and TSMC already using EUV for 5nm and even 4nm (with Samsung’s new Exynos 2200), there’s still a clear gap between the companies. Even though Intel’s first in line for NA EUV technology, it’s still behind on current EUV. And it’s not like either Samsung or TSMC will sit idle and let Intel catch up. The next few years will certainly be interesting in the chip market and I expect competition will heat up as Intel chases the top spot.

Streaming music report shows Spotify in the top spot, YouTube Music growing fast

A new report has dropped regarding the streaming music landscape worldwide, showing off its winners and losers.

As expected, Spotify is in the top slot with a 31 percent market share. Apple Music sits in second with 15 percent, and Amazon Music is at 13 percent. YouTube Music is at eight percent. Deezer holds onto two percent of the market.

One thing worth noting is that this data represents the streaming market in the middle of 2021. It also uses data from 2019 and 2020 for Apple and Amazon since those streamers don’t share subscriber counts as often as Spotify.

These are still likely as accurate as the numbers are going to get for the time being since Apple and some of the other streamers don’t share subscriber info often.

Notably, the data claims that YouTube Music was able to grow 50 percent over the last year. The Google-owned service is still at the bottom of the pile of the big players, but the fast growth actually lines up with what I’ve seen in the real world. Since YouTube Music offers people a wider pool of tracks to pick from, I’ve seen a few friends trend that way this year.

However, in 2021 we also saw Amazon and Apple Music both expand their offerings with more Dolby Atmos-equipped music and lossless quality for no extra cost — two very appealing technology improvements for audiophiles.

While Spotify is still holding the lead, it has lost two percent of its market share since 2020. This is unlikely to make a massive difference in the grand scheme of things, but it definitely showcases that Spotify might have some real competition in a few years.

If you want to see what makes each of these services stand out, you can check out our breakdown and video for it here.

Everything you need to know about the lawsuits between Ericsson and Apple

Tech giants Apple and Ericsson are taking part in an ongoing legal battle against the other.

The recent court drama started when Ericsson filed patent infringement lawsuits against Apple on January 17th after the company didn’t renew patents its licenses from Ericsson. The two lawsuits cover a total of 12 patents, eight of which cover 5G patents Apple uses in its products.

The licenses expired in December 2021 and reports indicate earlier negotiation talks to renew them broke down.

Ericsson charges a licensing fee for 5G handsets of $5 per device. Reports indicate Apple refused to pay and made comments the pricing violates FRAND terms, licenses that must be fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory. But Ericsson maintained its rate complied with terms outlined by FRAND and Apple was aware of this.

Both of Ericsson’s lawsuits ask the court to find Apple willfully infringed the patents, ban Apple from using the patents it infringed, and award financial compensation and royalties.

Apple is countersuing the Swedish telecom company for infringing patents it owns related to wireless charging and antennas. Filed on January 19th, the suit asks the court to make a decision on FRAND terms for the patents.

Apple also accuses Ericsson of using its patents “as ammunition through injunctions to coerce Apple to take an unfair, unreasonable, and discriminatory license,” according to the lawsuit filed by Apple.

Apple also makes it clear this action is in an effort to get Ericsson to back down. “To the extent respondents all of their lawsuits and legal actions, Apple is willing to do the same.”

Freedom’s $60/25GB plan offer now ends January 24th

Shaw-owned Freedom Mobile has changed up some of its ‘Big Gig’ plans.

The changes aren’t too crazy, but they’re changes nonetheless. First up, Freedom’s $50/mo 20GB plan has dropped 5GB of data. It’s now a $50/mo 15GB plan. The 20GB variant was listed as a promotional plan, so this isn’t a huge surprise. Oddly, the new 15GB version is still listed as a promo plan.

The other major change to Freedom’s plan lineup involves the $60/mo 25GB plan. It’s now listed as a ‘Limited Time’ offer that ends on January 24th. In other words, you have until Monday to grab that plan if you’re interested in it.

Beyond those two changes, Freedom doesn’t appear to have adjusted its other Big Gig plans, which are as follows:

  • $75/mo 30GB Freedom data / 2GB Freedom Nationwide data
  • $80/mo 40GB Freedom data / 2GB Freedom Nationwide data
  • $85/mo 30GB Freedom data / 3GB Freedom Nationwide data with Canada-U.S. calling, texting and data
  • $115/mo 50GB Freedom data / 5GB Freedom Nationwide data with Canada-U.S. calling, texting and data

It’s worth noting that the ‘Freedom Nationwide’ data is the amount of data you have access to when you’re not on Freedom’s network. Moreover, the prices listed above include a $5/mo discount for signing up with Freedom’s Auto Pay system. On top of that, customers who get one of these plans and bring their own phone can save an extra $5/mo for up to 24 months.

You can check out Freedom’s plans here.

Koodo follows Fido, adds $60/12GB plan with $5/mo bill credit

Telus’ flanker brand Koodo added a new $60/12GB promotional plan, bringing it in line with Fido.

Rogers’ flanker brand recently updated its plans, scrapping half the main plan options and increasing the 8GB plan from $50/mo to $52/mo — you can read more about those changes here. Koodo has now adjusted one of its plans to match.

Koodo previously offered a $30/mo plan with unlimited calling and texting but no data, a $52/mo 8GB plan, and a $55/mo 10GB plan. That plan is now a $60/12GB ‘Promotion’ plan — the others remain unchanged.

Koodo also offers a $5/mo bill credit that lasts for 24 months (a $120 credit in total), effectively making the plan a $55/12GB offer. Somewhat confusingly, the ‘Sweet deal’ box notes that the credit applies when customers bring their own phone, but if you switch to one of the Tab options listed on the plan page (Tab Plus, Tab Mid, Tab Basic), the offer text changes to say it applies to that Tab instead. In other words, it looks like you can get the $5 24-month credit whether you go BYOP or get a phone on Koodo’s Tab.

The $5 credit is likely intended to match a similar offer from Fido that shows up when you select a plan on the flanker brand’s website. As customers go through the check-out process on Fido’s site, a pop-up should appear offering a $5/mo credit for 24 months.

As of writing, Bell flanker brand Virgin Plus has not updated its plan page to match the $60/12GB offer from Koodo and Fido — it still offers the $55/10GB plan.

It’s also worth noting that Koodo hasn’t adjusted its ‘Starter’ plans, which are lower-cost options that generally match the government’s targets from the ongoing wireless pricing tracking program. Koodo does not allow customers to select these plans if they buy a phone.

You can check out Koodo’s plans here. It’s worth noting that prices may differ depending on your province.
