New iPhone SE and iPad Air appear in regulatory database

It looks like we may see a new iPhone SE and iPad Air at some point in the next couple of weeks/months if recent listings found in the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) database are accurate.

As first reported by French publication Consomac, the fact that a product has hit the EEC is often an indication that it could launch in the next few weeks. In the past, Apple has held events in April tied to the launch of new versions of the iPad and the iPhone SE, so there’s a possibility we could see that again this year.

Apple’s 3rd-gen 5.7-inch iPhone SE is expected to be nearly identical to its predecessor in terms of design, including its sizable bezels and physical iPhone 8-era Touch ID button. Most of the changes will be under the hood, with the entry-level iPhone featuring 5G and the iPhone 13’s A15 chip.

On the other hand, the 5th-gen iPad Air will reportedly feature Apple’s A15 chip, 5G support and a 12-megapixel FaceTime HD camera that includes ‘Center Stage’ camera support. There’s also a possibility that the tablet could feature an OLED panel similar to the 11-inch iPad Pro.

Given the last iPhone SE and iPad Air refresh was in 2020, both devices are due for an update. We’ll likely have a more concrete picture of Apple’s plans in the next few weeks.

TekSavvy expands fibre service to Cedar Springs and Blenheim, Ontario

Chatham, Ontario-based independent internet service provider (ISP) TekSavvy has announced an expansion of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service in Cedar Springs and Blenheim, Ontario.

TekSavvy says its fibre service is now available to more than 700 homes and businesses in the two communities, and will reach more places in the coming weeks. TekSavvy expects fibre construction to wrap up in February 2022 — when it does, the expansion will reach 450 homes and businesses in Cedar Springs.

The ISP expects to finish construction in Blenheim this summer, reaching a total of 2,350 homes and businesses.

Connected homes and businesses will have access to TekSavvy internet services with speeds up to 1Gbps. The ISP notes that all its plans come with unlimited bandwidth.

Finally, TekSavvy noted that it’s currently offering a $20/mo credit for 12 months on select fibre internet plans, making now a good time to sign up if you’re in an area where the ISP offers fibre internet.

The Cuphead Show! to premiere on Netflix on February 18

Netflix has confirmed that The Cuphead Show! will begin streaming on February 18th.

As the title suggests, the animated series is an adaptation of Cuphead, the hit 2017 run-and-gun platformer from Canadian indie developer Studio MDHR.

Produced by Netflix Animation, the 12-episode series follows Cuphead (Tru Valentino) and Mugman (Frank Todaro) as they get up to all kinds of misadventures on the Inkwell Isles. In addition to the two bowl-shaped brothers, other characters from the game set to make an appearance include Ms. Chalice (Grey Griffin), the Devil (Luke Millington-Drake) and King Dice (Wayne Brady).

Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, who founded Studio MDHR, serve as executive producers on The Cuphead Show!

2022 is set to be a big year for Cuphead. Beyond the animated series and the fifth anniversary of the game coming in September, the long-awaited The Delicious Last Course expansion is set to release on June 30th, 2022 on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC. The DLC will add Ms. Chalice as a new playable character alongside new bosses and levels.

Samsung unveils Exynos 2200 chip with Xclipse graphics based on AMD RDNA 2

Samsung announced its latest mobile processor, the Exynos 2200, sporting a new graphics processing unit (GPU) using AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture dubbed ‘Xclipse.’

Samsung has teased plans to include AMD graphics tech in its mobile chips for a while now, and in June 2021 announced that its upcoming Exynos chip would offer ray-tracing capabilities. The Exynos 2200 delivers on that promise with hardware-accelerated ray tracing in Xclipse.

Ray tracing, for those unfamiliar with the tech, attempts to simulate how light physically behaves. In video games, ray tracing can help produce more realistic-looking lighting effects, including light that can bounce off reflective surfaces. However, so far ray tracing has proven to be difficult for GPUs to handle and often brings a significant performance hit compared to other lighting solutions.

Still, it’s impressive to see the technology come to mobile chips. It’ll be interesting to see how well it works in practice. Moreover, Samsung shared this surprisingly weird video touting the capabilities of the Exynos 2200 GPU:

Aside from the benefits of AMD RDNA 2 and ray tracing in Xclipse, the Exynos 2200 chip sports other benefits. Samsung says the chip uses a 4nm extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) process and is one of the first in the mark to integrate Arm’s latest ARMv9 CPU cores. The ARMv9 cores offer a significant improvement over ARMv8 in both performance and security.

Specifically, the octa-core Exynos 2200 sports a tri-cluster structure with a single ARM Cortex-X2 core, three performance and efficiency balanced Cortex-A710 ‘big cores’ and four power-efficient Cortex-A510 ‘little cores.’

Exynos 2200 also support powerful on-device artificial intelligence (AI) thanks to an upgraded neural processing unit (NPU) and both sub-6 and mmWave 5G through an improved modem.

Finally, Samsung touted the chip’s image signal processor (ISP), which has a redesigned architecture that supports resolutions of up to 200 megapixels. When recording video at 30fps, the ISP supports up to 108 megapixels in single camera mode and 64+36 megapixels in dual camera mode. The ISP can connect up to seven individual image sensors and drive four sensors simultaneously for multi-camera set-ups. The ISP also supports up to 4K HDR or 8K recording.

While the Exynos 2200 certainly sounds impressive, Canadians might not get to try it out. Samsung typically launches its flagship phones in Canada with Qualcomm Snapdragon chips instead of its own Exynos (usually, Exynos chips power Samsung devices outside of North America). Of course, we won’t know for certain until devices rocking the Exynos 2200 release — for now, though, it’s probably safe to assume we won’t get those devices in Canada.

Those interested in learning more about the Exynos 2200 can check out all the details on Samsung’s website.

Telus offers fastest mobile speeds in Canada, Shaw takes broadband; report

Telus continues to be the fastest mobile operator in Canada, according to recently released statistics from Ookla’s Q4 Canada Market report for 2021.

Ookla owns and operates speedtest.net, a website that analyzes internet performance.

Prior quarterly reports for the year also placed Telus in the top spot. The Q4 report shows Telus has a speed score of 98.29, a significant increase from 81.93 reported in Q3.

Freedom Mobile also kept its spot from Q3 by offering the lowest latency at 19 milliseconds (ms).

Vidéotron emerged with the highest consistency score in the mobile sector once again. The higher the score, the better internet performance and quality.

The findings weren’t as clearcut when reporting 5G performance, as there was no “statistical winner.” However, Bell did have the highest median download speed on the network at 171.39Mbps. Telus came in second with 167.74Mbps.

The same goes for 5G availability in Canada. While there was no winner, Rogers reported 41.3 percent availability and Telus 39.9 percent.

Telus was the fastest provider in Manitoba, B.C., and Ontario. Rogers was the quickest provider in Saskatchewan. Provider information on the remaining provinces was not available.

Google devices have the fastest overall performance. The iPhone 13 Pro Max had the quickest download speeds when looking at individual devices.

Broadband

Different players entered the top ranks in the broadband aspect of the report.

Shaw offered the fastest fixed broadband services with a speed score of 197.22. Rogers, which will soon merge with Shaw, came in second with a speed score of 183.63.

Bell had the lowest latency at 5ms, and Rogers presented the highest consistency score.

New Brunswick had the fastest broadband download speeds in Canada. Rogers is the “fastest provider” in the province, along with Newfoundland and Labrador, and Ontario.

Shaw is the fastest in B.C, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, while Bell is listed for Nova Scotia and Quebec. Information on Prince Edward Island is unavailable.

Xbox Game Pass has hit 25 million subscribers

Microsoft has confirmed that its Xbox Game Pass service has reached 25 million subscribers.

The company revealed the milestone as part of its landmark announcement that it will acquire Activision Blizzard in a deal valued at $68.7 billion USD (about $85.96 billion CAD).

Game Pass is Microsoft’s Netflix-esque service that offers unlimited access to hundreds of games for a single monthly fee. In addition to Xbox consoles, Game Pass is available on PC and mobile devices (via ‘Cloud Gaming’ streaming). Game Pass on console and PC is priced at $11.99 CAD/month, while Game Pass Ultimate — which includes both versions of Game Pass, Xbox Live Gold, EA Play and Cloud Gaming — costs $16.99/month.

Of course, one of the main reasons why Microsoft is purchasing Activision Blizzard is to bolster Game Pass. In a statement, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the company will “offer as many Activision Blizzard games as [it] can within Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, both new titles and games from Activision Blizzard’s incredible catalogue.”

This means that titles from the likes of the Call of DutyWorld of WarcraftTony Hawk’s Pro SkaterStarcraft and Crash Bandicoot franchises could eventually make their way onto Game Pass.

The payoff of Microsoft’s last major gaming purchase, ZeniMax, has also yet to be fully realized. Two major titles from the company’s Bethesda subsidiary, this summer’s Redfall and November’s Starfield, will launch exclusively on Xbox and PC with day one Game Pass availability. Other games, like last year’s critically acclaimed Deathloop and the upcoming Ghostwire: Tokyo, are also expected to come to Xbox following one-year PlayStation exclusivity periods.

It’s also worth noting that PlayStation is rumoured to launch its own Game Pass-esque subscription service, codenamed ‘Spartacus,’ early this year. Spartacus is said to combine PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now on top of offering an expanded games catalogue that includes PS1 and PS2 games. Should that happen, it remains to be seen how the two services will compete.

Fido targeting current customers with iPhone 12 mini and S20 FE promotional offers

Rogers-owned Fido is offering some of its current users special promotional pricing for the iPhone 12 mini and the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G, as shared by Fido customer and RedFlagdeals user ‘EmpressLisaSu.’

The user has been signed up to Fido’s $40/15GB for about two months now and got a text message from the carrier with the promotional Samsung Galaxy S20 FE offer. “Ring in 2022 with a new phone and save up to $360 over 24 months with Fido Payment Program on select phones and plans,” reads a portion of the message.

The promotional pricing discounts the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE from the regular $41.67/mo for 24 months to just $10/mo for 24 months. That turns out to be $240 over 24 months for the S20 FE, a decent deal indeed.

According to ‘EmpressLisaSu,’ to claim the promotional offer, they had to upgrade from their pre-existing $40 plan to a $55/30GB plan. After talking to a customer service rep, they were able to get the promotional pricing with their existing plan.

‘EmpressLisaSu,’ went with the iPhone 12 mini offer, which saw the device discounted from the original $37.42/mo to just $7.92/mo. That sums up to $190 over the course of 24 months for the last-gen iPhone, a pretty good deal to say the least.

It’s worth noting that this was a targeted promotional offer, and your mileage may vary.

Check your text messages to find any similar offers from Fido, or check your online Fido account.
