Xbox sale discounts Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs bundle by nearly $100

Microsoft currently has a surprisingly good deal on a Ubisoft game bundle that will save you almost $100 on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion.

Spotted by RedFlagDeals, the bundle typically costs $145.99 CAD on the Microsoft Store, but thanks to a $97.82 discount, you can get the bundle for just $48.17. It’s worth noting the games are for Xbox, not for PC.

If you don’t have these games already but want to pick them up for cheap, this is a great way to do it. If you already own one, Microsoft also has the games on sale individually, along with a few other Ubisoft titles and other games:

Finally, if you’re not interested in buying any of these titles, several are available through Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription (either for consoles, PC or both). Several of the Ubisoft titles will join Game Pass in the future as well.

Viral Walmart metaverse video was made in 2017 to ‘impress influencers’

A recent video uploaded to Twitter titled ‘This is how Walmart envisions Shopping in the #Metaverse,’ has been spreading like wildfire. It’s hit nine million views, over 30,000 retweets, and supposedly shows the future of grocery shopping in the metaverse, as Walmart sees it playing out.

If it already wasn’t evident from looking at the graphics in the VR experience — we hate to burst your bubble but that video isn’t new and might have been resurfaced in a bid to boost metaverse stocks or crypto assets, some of which survive nearly solely on hype.

The video isn’t connected to Facebook’s vision of the metaverse and, it isn’t even made by Walmart. It was created for the retailer by a program management and design strategy digital agency called Mutual Mobile (MM).

Back in 2017, Walmart wanted “to impress influencers at SXSW (South by Southwest Festival),” and get an edge over the competition by showing off a virtual shopping experience, reads MM’s blog post from almost five years ago. While Walmart’s aim to “impress influencers” might not have worked out back in 2017, the video resurfacing now, in an atmosphere where the Metaverse idea has freshly been reincarnated surely can, and that is evident from the engagement on the Tweeted video.

Five years ago, Walmart had the initial idea ready but needed someone with the technical skills to design the VR experience and lead the way.

MM took it up from there and designed a dystopian grocery store, complete with soft chatter but no other shoppers, a Walmart associate that just wouldn’t leave you alone and constantly shifting walls and surroundings that would nauseate you in real-time.

In short, it’s a video that’ll make you wonder whether we need such technology in the future. Aren’t current online shopping apps enough? If you’re short on time, would you rather pick up your phone, tap on the Walmart app, select what you need and pay for it or would you ready up your VR headset, load up the ‘Walmart grocery store,’ walk around and browse the shelves full of digital food and commodities? While the latter definitely has a niche for it, I don’t see it being the main arm going forward. That doesn’t mean that said VR/AR grocery experiences cant exist and wouldn’t have any use.

It’ll be fun to ‘visit’ Walmart while not having to leave your house, but I just don’t see that being the primary way people shop, not at least in the near future, and rather a niche experience for certain occasions.

It’s kind of similar to the digital experience from Inabuggy released earlier last year that allowed shoppers to virtually roam Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market and beat the pandemic blues.

Fossil will add Alexa to its Gen 6 smartwatch in the first half of 2022

Fossil announced two new versions of its Gen 6 Wear OS smartwatch at CES 2022 — one for gamers and one for Dutch jewelry enthusiasts. However, another announcement from the company that flew a little under the radar is that it will add support for Amazon Alexa to its Gen 6 watches.

As for when Fossil will add support, well, that’s not entirely clear. The company told 9to5Google in a statement that the Alexa update would arrive in the first half of 2022. It also told The Verge in a CES briefing that Alexa would come to Gen 6 smartwatches “early this year.” Moreover, The Verge’s Victoria Song received a Skagen Falster Gen 6 and the Razer X Fossil Gen 6 watches, both of which include an Alexa widget that simply displays a “coming soon” message.

With all that taken into account, that means Fossil could add Alexa to the Gen 6 smartwatch anytime between now and June. Presumably, Gen 6 owners won’t need to wait six months for the Alexa update, but we’ll see how it plays out.

The Verge also pointed out that Fossil teasing Alexa support may be a way to give customers something to look forward to until Wear OS 3 arrives (which could be anywhere from a few months to the end of the year). Plus, Alexa support would be a win both for Fossil and smartwatch customers. Currently, Apple Watches are Siri-only, Wear OS watches only have Google Assistant and Samsung watches force Bixby on users (although the Galaxy Watch 4 will eventually offer Google Assistant too). The only other smartwatches that offer a choice are Fitbit’s Sense and Versa watches.

In other words, most customers are limited to using whatever assistant ships on their smartwatch. Plus, Amazon’s Alexa is a relatively popular voice assistant, so Fossil’s move to support it will both give customers a choice in what assistant they use and give people access to Alexa on a smartwatch, which so far hasn’t been available outside of Fitbit’s smartwatches. Hopefully, this starts a trend with smartwatch makers and we see more watches offer a choice of on-wrist voice assistant.

BMW slaps 31-inch screen onto rear ceiling of concept car

At CES 2022, BMW has been showing off all kinds of futuristic car tech, from a colour-changing paint job to this new giant in-car cinema display.

So far, the giant screen has only been shown off in concept form, but BMW says that it’s an 8K touch screen that runs Amazon’s Fire TV OS operating system. This means it should be able to stream content from just about every major content platform.

The videos will be streamed over the car’s internal 5G connection, and The Verge mentions that there are also small controls built into the door if you don’t want to tap the screen, especially if BMW decides to attach it to the roof.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a cinema display without sound, and BMW says that it has a 30-speaker system that can provide 4D sound since there can even be speakers in the seats themselves.

Demo of screen starts at 3:19 in video above.

BMW also talks about being able to automatically shutter the car’s blinds to seal off any light when using the display to play movies.

While there’ a working prototype of this at CES 2022, it’s more like the back half of a car with a huge roof. This is likely to house all the hardware needed to show it off. In this version, the screen comes down like a little projector mat and blocks the rearview mirror, suggesting it can only be used when the vehicle is stopped.

With this in mind, the display looks like it’s designed to give drivers something to do while they wait for their car to charge. With that in mind, how much extra battery will it take to run a 30-speaker cinema setup for two hours? Because of this, I’m not quite sold on the concept yet.

Samsung Galaxy S22 dummy video makes its rounds

Canada’s own Unbox Therapy has leaked a video showcasing Samsung’s upcoming S series flagships, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, S22+ and S22.

While the video has been delisted from YouTube, other channels have reuploaded it and screenshots have emerged, giving us a detailed look at the South Korean company’s upcoming devices.

While not entirely new given we’ve dummy units of the S22 series in the past, Unbox Therapy’s videos corroborate those designs.

The standard Galaxy S22 and S22+ both look like last year’s S21 devices with camera bumps in the top left corner or the rear of the smartphone. On the other hand, the S22 Ultra looks like a combination of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the S21 Ultra.

Alongside the leaked video, a spec sheet has also appeared.

The leaked specs indicate that the regular S21 sports a 6.1-inch display, the plus model will offer a 6.55-inch screen and that the Ultra features a 6.8-inch screen.

While the leaked specs are likely accurate, it’s odd the S21 Ultra offers 8GB/12GB of RAM when the S21 Ultra featured 12GB/16GB of RAM, making the Ultra seem like a bit of a downgrade in a sense.

The spec sheet also states that the 108-megapixel sensor features some sort of “Super Clear Glass,” which is theorized to reduce the small bright dots that sometimes appears when taking videos at night.

WinFuture’s Roland Quandt previously shared an image of a 45W charger for the S22 Ultra, which suggests that Samsung is bringing back the Note 10+’s higher charging speeds.

It’s unclear when Samsung will launch these new S22 smartphones. It’s possible that we’ll see Samsung unveil the Galaxy S22 series as late as February at Mobile World Congress (MWC).

Intel reveals 12th Gen desktop CPU that can hit 5.5GHz

Intel followed up its earlier CES 2022 CPU announcement by revealing a desktop processor capable of boosting to 5.5GHz on a single core out-of-the-box.

After previously teasing the CPU, Intel has officially announced the 12th Gen Core i9-12900KS (as Tom’s Hardware notes, the ‘S’ likely means the chip will be a limited edition, which could make it hard to find). The ability to hit 5.5GHz on a single core marks a roughly 300MHz improvement over what Intel achieved on the i9-12900K.

Further, The Verge says that an on-stage demonstration from Intel showed the 12900KS running at a sustained 5.2GHz across all performance cores while running Hitman 3. While certainly impressive, Intel didn’t share details on the chip’s power draw or what cooling solution was used.

As for when you’ll be able to buy the i9-12900KS, well, probably not anytime soon. Intel’s executive vice president Gregory Bryant said that the CPU would ship to “OEM customers” during the presentation. That suggests the chip will be available in pre-built computers to start — it’s not clear if or when Intel will sell the CPU directly to customers who want to build their own PCs.

For more information about Intel’s latest CPUs, check out our coverage here. You can check out more news from CES 2022 here.

Apple Messages bug is sending read receipts even if you turn them off

Apple’s popular Messages app has a new bug that will show read receipts even when users have them turned off.

Initially spotted by MacWorld (via 9to5Mac), several users have reported the issue with iOS 15. However, it’s been seen before on older versions of iOS. It’s not clear how widespread the issue is, but at the moment there doesn’t seem to be anything users can do to fully resolve the problem. Some impacted users were able to temporarily fix the problem by restarting their iPhones.

For those unfamiliar with read receipts, they’re a popular feature on many messaging and chat platforms. In short, if you send a message to someone, the app will show when it delivered the message and will show when the recipient has read the message. For some, it’s a helpful way to monitor the status of a message. For others, it’s an annoyance — some people might read a message and not be able to respond right away, which could cause offence if the sender sees the read receipt but doesn’t receive a response.

Because of that, some people like to turn off read receipts (you can do that with iMessage by heading to the Settings app, then Messages and scrolling to ‘Send Read Receipts’ on your Apple device).

Of course with the current bug, turning off rear receipts might not stop your phone from sending them. Hopefully, Apple fixes the problem soon — likely in a future iOS update. For the time being, you might want to not open any messages you receive unless you want the sender to see you’ve read them.

Instagram going back to its roots, tests chronological feeds

It looks like Instagram is testing a feature that many of us missed for years — chronological feeds. A new version of the social media platform lets users switch between chronological and algorithmically-sorted feeds.

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, explained in a recent tweet that the platform will offer three feeds. ‘Home,’ the experience we’re seeing now that features ranked content based on algorithms of what Instagram thinks you’re interested in. Following that, is ‘Favorites,’ a chronological feed of accounts that aims to ensure you don’t miss content from your favourite people.

Lastly, is ‘Following,’ a chronological feed of the posts from only accounts you follow. This is similar to how Instagram operated several years ago.

Mosseri confirmed that tests are currently rolling out and that users should expect the full release by the first half of this year.

Instagram announced the return of chronological feeds back at the beginning of December.
