BlackBerry’s BB10 smartphones are dead

BlackBerry, a one-time Canadian smartphone giant, has pulled the plug on the services that power its lineup of BB10 devices.

While this day (January 4th, 2022) has been a long time coming, it also marks the end of an era and the official death of the tech giant’s BB10-powered smartphones. Further, BlackBerry 7.1 and earlier and BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier devices will also no longer function.

This means that iconic BlackBerry devices like the BlackBerry Classic, Q10, Bold, 9720 and more, no longer have access to mobile data, phone calls, text messages or 9-1-1 functionality.

“As a reminder, the legacy services for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions, will no longer be available after January 4, 2022,” wrote BlackBerrry on its website.

It’s important to point out that the brand’s later Android-powered, TCL-manufactured devices, including the Priv, DTEK60 and KeyOne, will still function.

At the company’s peak in 2009, BlackBerry held roughly 20 percent of the smartphone market, though it was quickly overtaken in the early 2010s by Apple’s iPhone and Android devices. The modern iteration of BlackBerry is a software and security services-focused business.

The company also still operates its QNX automotive software business.

The OnePlus 10 Pro has been unveiled

OnePlus has shown off the design of its latest smartphone flagship, the OnePlus 10 Pro.

The phone looks sleek with a matte or possibly even Sandstone-type finish. It’s hard to tell, and the company is keeping the device’s details pretty close to the chest before release.

OnePlus seems to be following a similar strategy to Google, which revealed details about its Pixel 6 series for months leading up to its release to help build hype for that phone. Now that OnePlus is following a similar path, we might start seeing longer pre-hype cycles for phones before they even come out.

Moving back to the OnePlus 10 Pro, you’ll notice that it looks to be large like last year’s OnePlus 9 Pro and sports three rear cameras and a large flash. The’ company is still working with Hasselblad, and it’s written “P2D 50T on the flash. Input Mag editor Ray Wong says that OnePlus told him the ‘P’ stands for Phone. The ‘2D’ stands for second-gen Hasselblad camera on mobile and the ’50T’ denotes that the three cameras are 50-megapixels.

This whole new camera setup is also housed in a ceramic bump on the phone’s rear that looks like a wider version of a Samsung Galaxy S21 series device. OnePlus says that the ceramic bump is 13x stronger than glass, so hopefully, this hints at the 10 Pro being the most durable phone from the company yet.

The company has also shared the phone in Emerald Forest (green) and Volcanic Ash (black) colorways. These are reminiscent of the hues OnePlus has been using since the 8T, but it appears there is no silver option this year.

Beyond that, all we can gain from the images is that the phone uses USB-C to charge and still has the classic OnePlus alert slider on the side to quickly silence the phone.

For the first time, OnePlus plans to launch in China first, and the rest of the world will get the phone later. This is a new release strategy for OnePlus, but since it works so closely with Oppo now it makes sense that it will start favouring its home country.

This is an exciting phone, especially in the camera department, but if OnePlus can’t start ironing out its device updates soon, I’m not sure if all the good hardware in the world can save it.

Alienware’s Concept Nyx is all about streaming games over your local Wi-Fi

In classic CES fashion, Dell-owned gaming PC company Alienware is showing off a concept device you’ll probably never be able to buy that can power games across multiple screens in your home.

Engadget, which detailed Alienware’s ‘Concept Nyx’ extensively, described it as a Plex server but for video games. In short, Nyx appears to be a powerful gaming PC set up as a server. It handles all the complexities of gaming — rendering the content, connecting to networks, receiving inputs, etc. Then, Nyx streams the visuals over your local Wi-Fi network to whatever display you want to use, be it your TV, monitor or smartphone.

Perhaps the most unique part of Concept Nyx is Alienware’s pitch is that it can play multiple games simultaneously, even on the same screen. This looks really cool on paper (and in Alienware’s promotional material), almost like the couch co-op gaming of the early console era, except everyone on the couch can play their own game.

In practice, the feature doesn’t quite live up to Alienware’s pitch, according to Engadget reporters who went hands-on with Nyx. Engadget says running games simultaneously on a TV caused them to show up in tiny windows rather than cover half the screen like how Alienware shows it in promo materials.

Still, it is Concept Nyx, after all, so some hiccups are to be expected. Alienware representatives also couldn’t share details about what powers Nyx.

Further, since Nyx is a concept, there’s a chance it will never become a product that people can actually buy. Engadget notes that Alienware previously integrated parts of concept devices into new products. I could see future Alienware gaming PCs shipping with a Nyx app that lets you run games and stream them to another screen.

There are already ways to stream games over your local network

Of course, several products already do this. Popular PC game store and launcher Steam has a built-in ‘Remote Play’ feature that lets users launch a game on their computer and stream the visuals to another device (like a laptop with Steam or a smartphone). There’s also Nvidia’s ‘GameStream’ for playing games from your Nvidia-powered PC on an Nvidia Shield TV device.

While there’s a lot of potential with Nyx and other local streaming options, I also have to note that local streaming isn’t that great (at least in my experience). The few times I’ve tried to use Steam Remote Play, I’ve run into countless issues. Whenever I finally got it to work, the actual experience playing games was frustrating due to immense input lag. Others have had better luck than I have, but local streaming still needs some work before it can be a reliable option for most gamers.

Harry Potter reunion special creators confirm mistakenly using Emma Roberts image instead of Watson

HBO Max’s recently released Harry Potter movie series reunion special, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts,’ offers a fascinating retrospective on the wizarding world’s iconic actors.

However, in an amusing turn of events, an image of Emma Roberts was displayed during the special instead of Emma Watson, that actress that actually played Hermoine Granger in the films. The error was quickly edited out of the streaming special but remains an amusing misstep.

In Canada, the reunion special streams on Bell-owned Crave.

“Well spotted Harry Potter fans!” reads a statement from the special’s producers, via The Wrap. “You brought an editing mistake of a mislabeled photograph to our attention. [The] new version is up now.”

The reunion special first started streaming on January 1st. In the clip, Watson talks about how she was a fan of the Harry Potter series before playing Hermoine and how her father would read the series to her. The image used in in this portion of the special, however, was of Roberts back in 2012.

The series’ stars that joined Watson in the special include Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Felton and more. Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling is only seen in archival footage in the feel because Warner Bros. is likely attempting to distance itself from Rowling amid the ongoing controversy surrounding her transphobic views.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Crave for more information regarding if the HBO Max special has been updated in Canada. If you haven’t watched the special yet, here’s how to stream it in Canada.

Ontario to close movie theatres amid Omnicron surge

Following the Ontario government’s announcement that the province is moving back into modified step 2 of its reopening plan, the theatre chain, Cineplex, has confirmed that it will temporarily shut down operations.

“Based on recent government directives, all 67 theatres in Ontario will be closed as of Wednesday, January 5, and will reopen as soon as we are allowed,” said Cineplex in a recent Tweet.

Several high-profile films recently hit theatres, including Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix: Resurrections. In mid-December, the province’s capacity limit for movie theatres was cut by 50 percent following further government restrictions related to the surge of Omnicron COVID-19 cases.

Quebec also recently closed theatres amid tightened restrictions related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In Ontario, along with closing theatres, social gathering restrictions will be reduced to five people indoors and ten people outdoors. The capacity at weddings, funerals and religious services will also be limited to 50 percent. Finally, retailers and shopping malls will be allowed 50 percent capacity, and schools will move to remote learning from January 5th to at least January 17th.

You can find all of Ontario’s new COVID-19 restrictions on the province’s official website.
