Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster coming to mobile and PC in February 2022

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will launch on mobile and PC sometime in February 2022.

“In order to bring you the best experience possible, we’re allowing the necessary time to apply final polish while finishing development on the game,” wrote the company on the official Final Fantasy Twitter account.

The Pixel Remaster series brings back the original six Final Fantasy games with new graphics and audio. The first five were released over the past several months, although it had been unclear until now exactly when the sixth would launch.

It makes sense that Square Enix would want to take extra time for Final Fantasy VI, though. The classic SNES RPG is not only the most beloved of the first six games, but widely regarded to be one of the greatest games of all time, as well.

A specific Canadian price for Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster has not yet been confirmed. For reference, the Pixel Remasters of the first two games are priced at $15.99 CAD each on Steam, while III, IV and V all cost $23.99 each. However, a bundle that includes all six games is available for $99.78, which offers a 22 percent discount.

Square Enix says it will be adding “new items” to both the individual and bundled editions of Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster, although it’s unclear what those will be.

A bigger question many fans have been asking, however, is whether the Pixel Remasters will come to other platforms. While the ports of those six games were already available on PC and mobile, they have never been playable on modern consoles.

In July, Square Enix said console ports depend on fan demand, which was an odd statement given how fans have been voicing such interest for months now. Hopefully, console versions will eventually happen, given the hundreds of millions of people playing on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo systems.

Surface Pro 7 bundle with TypeCover, Surface Pen available for $999 at Costco

Costco Canada has a decent offer on a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 bundle if you’re looking to pick up one of Microsoft’s popular 2-in-1 devices.

As spotted by RedFlagDeals, Costco’s bundle includes the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 with a 10th Gen Intel i5-1035G4 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Plus, the bundle includes a black TypeCover keyboard and platinum Surface Pen. All in, the bundle costs $999.99 for Costco members until December 30th.

While that might seem like a lot, especially for an older Surface model, it’s worth keeping in mind that Microsoft’s Surface line is typically expensive. The same Pro 7 i5 model would normally run you $1,199 in Canada without the $170 TypeCover or $130 Surface Pen.

Moreover, when I checked Microsoft’s website for the Surface Pro 7 price, I found that the same model was discounted to $929, but without the accessories. In other words, even with a significant discount from Microsoft, the Costco deal is still better. That said, Microsoft is out of stock of that Pro 7 model, so you can’t get it anyway (unless you buy the Costco one, which you should since it’s a better deal).

All of that said, this particular Surface Pro 7 bundle is really only worth it if you want the form factor. Microsoft’s Surface line is, in my opinion, one of the better options when it comes to 2-in-1, detachable Windows machines. However, if you don’t care about that form factor, you can get better value by buying a more traditional clamshell laptop (either something more powerful for the same price or something equally as powerful for less). That’s doubly so with the older Pro 7.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Surface Pro 7, you can check out my review here (I will note that I had some technical difficulties with mine, but after those were worked out, the Pro 7 was fine). Alternatively, you can check out my Surface Pro 8 review here if you’re considering getting the latest and greatest Surface Pro.

Gifting a Switch for Christmas? Nintendo suggests setting it up early

Buying someone a Nintendo Switch for Christmas? You may want to set up an account for them before they open the console on Christmas morning.

The Japan-based gaming company warned there could be delays or other issues over the holiday weekend with its servers, especially with account creation. IGN spotted the warning in a tweet from Nintendo’s Japanese customer service account, which reads as follows (thanks to Google Translate):

“This weekend, access will be concentrated on the server of #Nintendo Account, and it is expected that Nintendo Account will not be created immediately. If you are planning to use the Nintendo Switch family for the first time, we recommend that you create it in advance.”

Part of the issue is that the Switch requires a Nintendo account and the first time you set up the console, you need to create an account or sign in with an existing one. Since there will likely be an influx of new consoles on Christmas, there’s also a good chance a bunch of people will try to create new accounts at the same time, which could cause problems.

For example, IGN noted that the Nintendo eShop went down on Christmas Day in 2020. It’s possible all the new Switch owners trying to create new accounts overloaded the system.

Along with creating an account ahead of time, if you’re relying on the eShop to get digital games rather than physical copies, it may be worth taking the time to download those games to the Switch too. Like with accounts, having tons of people trying to download games all at once on Christmas morning could also overload the system. It might even be worth checking physical copies of games — many physical games require patches before you can launch them for the first time. Downloading those patches now so the game’s ready to go could be a great idea.

It may be some extra work, but if there are any issues with Nintendo’s servers on Christmas morning, it should make everything go much smoother.

BMO offers a new way for customers to send money across the world

The Bank of Montreal has launched a new service called BMO Global Money Transfer to allow customers to send money abroad.

The feature is available on the bank’s mobile app and each international transaction is priced with a $5 service fee. This fee is waived for customers until January 31, 2022. “With most of our customers being digitally active, we’re excited to offer a convenient new feature to send money internationally through the BMO mobile banking app,” Gayle Ramsay, head of everyday banking at BMO, said in a press release.

“Being able to easily reach loved ones overseas is important to helping our customers make real financial progress, especially during the holiday season. BMO is committed to meeting customers where they are and providing convenient digital solutions to meet their everyday banking needs.”

The new service is building on the financial organization’s promise to digitalize the customer experience. It has partaken in several past initiatives, including letting customers take selfies to verify new bank accounts, as part of the promise.
