Microsoft tests moving more options from Control Panel to the Settings app

A long-running problem with modern versions of Windows — like Windows 11 and Windows 10 — is that there are two versions of several important apps. Perhaps the best example is the Settings app and Control Panel. Settings fits aesthetically with Windows’ modern design while Control Panel is the go-to destination for power users thanks to its functionality.

However, new tests in beta builds of Windows 11 include expanded Settings options that will hopefully help replace Control Panel functionality by moving it into the Settings app.

As spotted by The Verge, Microsoft moved some advanced network settings into a new Settings page. Those include folder sharing options, printers and network discovery options. Moreover, some entry points to the network and device settings in Windows 11 now send users to the Settings app instead of Control Panel.

Another change applies to links that previously send users to the Control Panel to uninstall apps. Those now lead to the Settings app. Plus, the options for uninstalling Windows Updates now reside in the Settings app instead of Control Panel.

However, it remains to be seen whether these changes will prove detrimental to certain use cases. Part of why the Control Panel has stuck around for so long is because of legacy and business needs. Microsoft needs to strike a balance between moving and updating these settings to modern Windows standards without reducing functionality.

Wind Mobile founder Anthony Lacavera wants to buy Freedom Mobile

Wind Mobile founder Anthony Lacavera wants to buy it back, now that the wireless carrier may be up for sale again.

Lacavera founded Wind in 2008 and sold it to Shaw Communications in 2016 for $1.6 billion. Since then, Wind was renamed Freedom Mobile. Now as Rogers works to acquire Shaw for $26 billion, some expect regulators will force it to sell Freedom to avoid a reduction in wireless competition as part of the deal.

A lengthy report from the Globe and Mail details Lacavera’s plan to buy Freedom should the Rogers-Shaw deal come to pass, which involves leveraging a group of investors including pension funds, private equity and family offices. Lacavera declined to share the names of investors with the Globe, although he did admit to sticking with investors from Canada, the U.S. and Britain to avoid controversy. (Wind’s launch was delayed due to issues raised by the CRTC over its ownership).

“I think that would be good for the Canadian market if [Freedom] was restored to being an independent, pure play wireless company,” Lacavera told the Globe. Lacavera previously expressed disappointment over the proposed Rogers-Shaw deal, saying that “prices most definitely are going to go up.”

Should Freedom go up for sale and Lacavera succeed in his bid to acquire the carrier, he plans to make 5G accessible to all Canadians with innovative pricing. Additionally, Lacavera believes Canadian wireless rates should be 20 to 30 percent lower. Dynamic pricing could be one way Lacavera will do that — he explained that networks can be dynamic now and that it can switch customers between 5G and 4G depending on their needs. As such, pricing could change dynamically depending on what customers are doing on their phones.

Others are interested in buying Freedom Mobile

However, Lacavera isn’t the only one interested in scooping up Freedom if it goes up for sale. Quebecor president and CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau previously expressed interest in buying Freedom as part of its plan to expand Vidéotron into Western Canada.

The Globe notes that Eastlink founder John Bragg also expressed interest in purchasing Freedom, but that the company’s not holding its breath.

However, none of this matters if Freedom doesn’t go up for sale — so far, it’s not clear if it will. Even if selling Freedom becomes part of the Rogers-Shaw deal, it’s unclear how much of the carrier will need to be sold. Rogers may be forced to part with only a certain amount of customers contracts, spectrum licences, physical stores and towers to appease regulators.

Plus, Freedom could find itself behind others on 5G since Shaw opted out of the recent 3,500MHz spectrum auction due to the Rogers acquisition. The 3,500MHz spectrum will be key in rolling out actual 5G since the mid-band spectrum offers several benefits over the low-band 5G currently deployed in Canada.

The CRTC, Competition Bureau and Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development are still reviewing the Rogers-Shaw deal.

How to Watch Tyron Woodley vs Jake Paul round 2 in Canada

Former Disney Star turned boxer Jake Paul is ready to run it back with former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley this Saturday at the Amalie Arena, Tampa, Florida, after the latter’s split decision loss back in August.

Paul, who was initially training to go up against Tyson Fury’s younger half-brother Tommy Fury, had to find a replacement when Fury’s camp announced that he can’t fight due to a broken rib.

Subsequently, Woodley, who also happened to be training and yearning for a rematch, got his shot. The event is branded as a ‘Leave no Doubt’ fight, and Paul certainly won’t leave a doubt if he manages to beat the former UFC Welterweight Champion the second time in a row.

Schedule

The Showtime Pay-Per-View is scheduled for Saturday, December 18th, with the main card starting at 9 pm ET. Here is a list of fights taking place before the main event:

  • Anthony Taylor vs. Chris Avila
  • J’Leon Love vs. Marcus Oliveira
  • Deron Williams vs. Frank Gore
  • Amanda Serrano vs. Miriam Gutierrez
  • Liam Paro vs. Yomar Alamo
  • Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley

How to stream the event in Canada?

Showtime is offering the official PPV stream to the event for $59.99 USD, but as always, it is restricted to users in the United States only.

Canadians can rely on Fite TV to catch the boxing match for $46.99 USD ($60.36 CAD) on their browser, iOS app, Android app and Roku. You don’t need to have a pre-existing or new subscription and can just pay for the PPV and watch. Learn more here.

Further, a few Canadian carriers have the event on PPV too. Check the list below:

Rogers: Ignite TV – $59.99 CAD

Shaw: Shaw Direct – $59.99 CAD

SaskTel: SaskTel Max TV – $59.99 CAD

Eastlink: Tivo – $59.99 CAD

Check out highlights of the first Paul vs Woodley fight below:

A loss here for Woodley would allow Paul to boast a 5-0 unbeaten run. However, if Woodley wins, a trilogy matchup could definitely be on the table.

Cineplex shares update on showtimes for several provinces amid new restrictions

On the heels of releasing an updated plan for theatres in Ontario amid the surging Omicron COVID variant, Cineplex shared an update for the rest of Canada on its Twitter page.

Cineplex started by thanking guests for being patient while its teams work to adjust as restrictions change from province to province. Additionally, the company noted that it temporarily hid some showtimes from its website while assessing the new government mandates — ticketholders who can no longer find their showtime don’t need to worry as the screening is still happening.

Next, Cineplex broke down what’s happening in different provinces:

B.C., Manitoba and Newfoundland

Cineplex says it’s “reviewing what was just announced in these provinces and will update Cineplex.com shortly.” The company urged guests to check their local theatre listings for updates.

“While our goal is to honour all tickets, any guests who are impacted by these government mandates will be emailed directly by our Guest Services team,” Cineplex said.

Finally, the theatre company noted that showtimes won’t be impacted before Sunday in Newfoundland, Monday in B.C. and Tuesday in Manitoba.

New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P.E.I.

Cineplex says it’s adding showtimes back to its website for these provinces. Further, guests impacted by the government restrictions have been contacted.

Finally, guests that have a ticket and have not received an email are “good to go.”

Ontario

For Ontario, Cineplex says it won’t be able to serve food or drinks starting Sunday. Additionally, locations in Ottawa will be subject to physical distancing requirements, which may affect a limited number of showtimes starting Sunday. Cineplex will contact impacted guests via email over the weekend.

You can learn more about what Cineplex is doing in Ontario here.

Quebec

Cineplex says a limited number of showtimes on Monday and Tuesday may be impacted, but all tickets for the weekend are valid. Again, keep an eye on your email since that’s how Cineplex will contact impacted guests.

You can check out Cineplex’s full statement here. It may also be a good idea to follow the Cineplex Twitter account to keep up with these updates as they arrive.
