Disney calls on Google and Reddit to help find Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania leakers

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania released in Canada on February 17th. Roughly a month before the film dropped, though, a Google Doc appeared on Reddit that reportedly contained the full dialogue of the movie.

Now, Disney has subpoenaed Google and Reddit, asking the two tech giants to help find the leakers of the Google Doc.

The document in question is reportedly 63 pages long and contains every piece of dialogue from the movie. The leakers got their hands on the SRT file for the film, one of the most popular subtitle file formats for videos and movies. The subtitles were apparently not in English, but the leakers used “three different translators to convert it to English.”

They were then posted “on or around January 20th” to r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers, a popular subreddit focused on sharing upcoming information from Marvel movies. The subreddit has since been taken down.

Disney’s Digital Media Anti-piracy team became aware of the leak soon after and submitted a request to remove the document. By the time the request came, though, the leakers had already pulled the document, so Google took no action.

Now, a Marvel entity has submitted a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) subpoena to Google to “identify an alleged infringer or infringers.” Marvel wants Google to look for “all identifying information” related to the leakers, “including without limitation, the name(s), username(s), address(es), telephone number(s), email address(es); any IP address(es) used by such user(s); and any account number(s) associated with such user(s).”

Bell receives $13 million to bring high-speed internet access to Eastern Ontario

The Governments of Canada and Ontario have awarded Bell $13 million in joint funding to bring high-speed internet access to more than 6,400 homes in Eastern Ontario.

The funding will impact several communities, including Arnprior, Braeside, Burnstown and Carp.

“We are proud to partner with the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario to expand our all-fibre broadband network to even more communities in Eastern Ontario,” Bruce Furlong, senior vice president of Network at Bell, said. “Our fast and reliable internet connections help people in rural and remote communities stay connected at home and at work.”

Funding comes from a $1.2 billion July 2021 commitment between the two governments. The Canada-Ontario broadband partnership funds large, fibre-based projects providing high-speed internet access to 280,000 homes. The two government bodies have announced various projects under the commitment and have allocated funding for projects by YorkNet and Celerity Telecom.

Pedro Pascal raves about Canada, suggests The Last of Us Season 2 will also film here

Pedro Pascal took some time during the Oscars to send some love to Canada.

Speaking to eTalk on the award show’s red carpet, The Last of Us star was asked whether Canada “did [him] proud” after filming the popular HBO series in Alberta for a year.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Etalk (@etalkctv)

“Incredibly proud,” Pascal responded. “We couldn’t have done it without Canada, frankly, because of its physical landscape, because of our crew. 12 months — I miss it.”

Notably, Pascal went on to say that “we’re going back,” suggesting that Season 2 of the series will once again film in Alberta — or, at least, elsewhere in Canada. This echoes comments from co-star Bella Ramsey, who told Comicbook.com she’s “really excited” to be “back in Canada” for Season 2.

It should be noted that HBO hasn’t yet made a formal announcement regarding where or even when The Last of Us‘ sophomore season might film. For all kinds of business reasons, changes could happen, especially since we’re presumably months out from the start of production. Still, Pascal and Ramsey’s comments now suggest that the current plan, at least, is to return to Canada.

Elsewhere in his brief chat with eTalk, Pascal was asked to give a shoutout to his “Canadian fans,” but that wasn’t enough for him.

“A big shoutout to my Canadian family — I miss you!”

Pascal has been quite open about his love of Canada during The Last of Us promotional circuit. Speaking to MobileSyrup ahead of the show’s premiere, the actor raved about “the warmth and the dedication” of the Canadian crew, saying that it ended up being “essential” to film here. He also gave a special mention to Canmore, which stood in for Jackson, Wyoming in Episode 6, calling it a “magical little town.”

The entire first season of The Last of Us is now streaming on Crave in Canada. A release window for Season 2 has not yet been revealed, although we know it will adapt The Last of Us Part II. That said, the creators have confirmed that at least two seasons will be needed to fully cover the events of the sequel.

While you wait for Season 2, here are several other Pedro Pascal shows and movies to stream in Canada.

Google to add generative AI features to Docs and Gmail

Google has announced that it’s bringing its generative AI models to its suite of Workspace products to allow users to “create, connect and collaborate like never before.”

Google will be bringing some new generative-AI features to “trusted testers” throughout the year before rolling out the features widely to the public. According to the company, these features will allow users to:

  1. draft, reply, summarize, and prioritize your Gmail
brainstorm, proofread, write, and rewrite in Docs
  2. bring your creative vision to life with auto-generated images, audio, and video in Slides
  3. go from raw data to insights and analysis via auto completion, formula generation, and contextual categorization in Sheets
  4. generate new backgrounds and capture notes in Meet
  5. enable workflows for getting things done in Chat

The first set of features will release for Google Docs and Gmail and aims to help people get started with writing.

Users will be able to give the AI a prompt and ask it to write an initial draft for it. “Whether you’re a busy HR professional who needs to create customized job descriptions, or a parent drafting the invitation for your child’s pirate-themed birthday party, Workspace saves you the time and effort of writing that first version. Simply type a topic you’d like to write about, and a draft will instantly be generated for you,” wrote Google.

Users will also be able to adjust the tone and style of the text depending on who it’s being sent to and its context.

The new experiences for Docs and Gmail are rolling out later this month, starting with English in the United States. From there, Google plans to collect feedback, refine the features, and make them more widely available to consumers, small businesses, enterprises and educational institutions in more countries and languages.

Tarform unveils official renders of jet ski EV concept dubbed ‘Raye’

Electric vehicles (EVs) are quickly gaining popularity and becoming more common on the roads, but New York-based EV company Taraform has its eyes now set on the water. The company has revealed official renders of a EV watercraft called the ‘Taraform Raye.’

The Raye is a concept being tooled around Taraform and is inspired by the manta ray. Taraform clearly has a fondness for the creature as the Raye not only draws its name from the ocean dweller, the EV watercraft has a unique design that draws from the curves and form of the manta ray. Taraform claims that the Raye will be made using recycled carbon fibre or its proprietary plant-based composite.

“The Tarform Raye is an electric jet ski that combines biomorphic design, plant-based materials, and modular technology,” Taraform states on its website. It goes on to claim that the vehicle may be able to achieve a top speed of 80km/h (roughly 50mp/h). The Raye is said to come in two different power and range configurations. Power output is estimated to be from 70 to 120hp. Two battery options are also on the table, providing one or two hours of run time.

However, Taraform has yet to build the Raye as of yet. Currently, the vehicle is still in a conceptual state. Even the design and visual aesthetic are subject to change. At the time of writing, Taraform aims to target a starting price of $68,000 USD (around $93,401 CAD). With this in mind, many of the other specs are under wraps as Taraform seeks to begin the development of the watercraft.

In 2022, Taraform started fulfilling orders for its futuristic-looking EV Luna bike. Much like the Raye, Taraform created a line of Luna bikes that balance elegant design with comfort. The Luna’s fulfillment came after four years of showing off the conceptual designs of the vehicle. Perhaps this is an indication of the Raye’s development timeline? It’s possible that by 2027 we’ll see Raye skimming across the water.

This year, Taiga launches its first electric watercraft, the Orca, which is showed off at the Toronto International Boat Show this year. Comparatively, the Orca can reach up to 104km/h (around 64mp/h) and can produce up to 120kW.

Taraform states that no launch date for production has been set for the Raye.

General Motors to use ChatGPT tech for in-car virtual assistant

General Motors is working on a new in-car digital assistant that will be powered by the same language and machine learning models as used in OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

“ChatGPT is going to be in everything,” GM Vice President Scott Miller said in an interview last week, via Reuters. According to the report, GM envisions the digital assistant supporting drivers in various scenarios, including providing instructions on how to replace a flat tire or integrating with other devices such as garage door openers.

Semafor was the first to break the news on Friday, March 10th, with GM confirming its plans with Reuters earlier today.

“This shift is not just about one single capability like the evolution of voice commands, but instead means that customers can expect their future vehicles to be far more capable and fresh overall when it comes to emerging technologies,” said a GM spokesperson in a statement given to Reuters.

Unlike other chatbots such as Bing Chat and ChatGPT, the GM in-car virtual assistant will have a “car-specific layer” built on top of the machine learning models that power ChatGPT.

Like with other platforms, the adoption and integration of AI and ML will only become more widespread among car manufacturers as they look to improve the features and performance their vehicles offer. As vehicles become increasingly connected and autonomous, digital assistants like the one being developed by GM could play an important role in providing drivers with the information they need to navigate certain driving scenarios.

It is currently unknown when the first GM vehicle with ChatGPT’s underlying language model equipped could be released.

Where to stream Ted Lasso in Canada

Ted Lasso sort of came out of nowhere during the pandemic, taking people by surprise with its winning blend of humour and feel-good optimism.

Now, less than three years after it debuted, it’s already looking like the series is about to end with its third season streaming on Wednesday, March 15th. That’s according to co-creator, co-writer and star Jason Sudeikis, who says he envisioned three seasons for Ted Lasso.

Therefore, you might be someone who’s been clamouring for more Lasso or simply a newcomer who wants to finally catch up with the show. Thankfully, it’s quite easy to do so. The series streams exclusively on Apple TV+ in Canada and worldwide.

The service costs $8.99 CAD/month with a free seven-day trial. It’s also included with Apple One membership bundles, which start at $18.95/month.

In the 12-episode third season of Ted Lasso, Ted (Sudeikis) leads AFC Richmond against West Ham United, which Nate (Nick Mohammed) has since joined. Unlike most Apple originals, new episodes of Ted Lasso will air every Wednesday, starting on March 15th, and currently overlaps with Disney’s The Mandalorian.
