SkipTheDishes joins grocery delivery race with new platform Skip Express Lane

Food delivery platform, SkipTheDishes, is expanding its grocery delivery service across the country.

Called the Skip Express Lane, it lets users pick from 1,500 items, including baby products, pantry staples, and snacks. Users will have their orders delivered to their door within 25 minutes. E-commerce orders will only be filled and there is no option for users to shop in person.

The expansion will see the launch of 38 fulfillment centres across the country by mid-2022. The option is already available in several locations in Winnipeg, London, and downtown Toronto. Locations in Edmonton and Calgary will open within a week’s time. Fulfillment centres operate daily between 10 a.m. and 2 a.m.

The company estimates this venture will create 1,000 jobs across the country.

“Skip Express lane fills an important gap in the market. Canadians will now be able to get everyday essentials and grocery items delivered to your door in 25 minutes or less,” Howard Migdal, chief operating officer at SkipTheDishes, said in a statement. “Even during peak demand when we’re processing several orders a minute, orders are packed and out the door in under 10 minutes for delivery.”

SkipTheDishes is joining an increasingly competitive market and makes this announcement on the same day competitor DoorDash launches a similar program called DashMart.

The SkipTheDishes app is available on iOS and Android.

New leak shows off Samsung’s Galaxy S21 FE in four colourways

With the reported release date of the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE fast approaching at CES 2022, several new ‘Fan Edition’ device leaks have started surfacing.

Now, courtesy of credible leaker Evan Blass, we have new pictures reportedly showing four colourways of the upcoming S21 FE.

Blass’s Tweet shows the S21 FE in White, Black, Lavender and Olive Green colourways. Further, as seen in the images, the device reportedly features an ‘Infinity-O’ display cutout on the front and a camera housing on the back that matches Samsung’s other Galaxy S21 devices.

Previous leaks suggest that the device will sport a SIM card tray, USB-C port, and no 3.55mm headphone jack. The smartphone is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and feature a 6.4-inch FHD+ 120Hz OLED display, an in-display fingerprint scanner, a 64-megapixel primary shooter and an ultrawide lens and a depth sensor.

Lastly, according to a recent firmware update, the S21 FE will be the first Samsung smartphone to launch with Android 12 out of the box. The Fan Edition device will sport Google’s latest OS update alongside Samsung’s One UI 4.0.

Android 12 only launched for the S21 series earlier this month in Canada.

Elon Musk says Tesla will accept Dogecoin for merch, Doge surges

Thanks to an Elon Musk tweet — it’s always a tweet — meme cryptocurrency Dogecoin leapt by over 20 percent on December 14th.

Musk tweeted that electric vehicle company Tesla would allow people to purchase some merchandise using Dogecoin. Although Musk didn’t specify what merchandise would be available, Reuters noted that Tesla sells merch ranging in price from $50 USD to $1,900 USD (about $64.29 to $2,443 CAD).

Tesla merch includes apparel, miniature models of its vehicles, the ‘Cyberwhistle‘ and more.

Musk has long been a vocal supporter of cryptocurrency and often comments on crypto via his Twitter account. Thanks in part to his over 66 million followers, Musk has demonstrated incredible sway over the crypto market. For example, Musk caused a spike in another cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, in March 2021 when he tweeted that Tesla would allow people to purchase its vehicles with the cryptocurrency. A few months later, Bitcoin dropped 14 percent after Musk backpedalled on accepting the crypto for Tesla vehicles.

Musk’s tweets have also caused spikes with Dogecoin — for example, in May, Musk tweeted that he was working with Dogecoin developers to improve the efficiency of the transaction system.

These are just a few examples of Musk’s impact on the cryptocurrency market. Recode has a much more detailed look at the crypto rollercoaster trailing Musk that you can check out here. Recode also notes that it’s unclear whether Musk himself buys or sells cryptocurrency after he tweets about it.

Cyrpto is not subject to the same level of regulation and oversight as fiat currency or stocks, leaving potential for manipulation. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) previously fined Musk and Tesla $20 million USD (about $25.7 million CAD) each after Musk tweeted “funding secured” about taking Tesla private, leading the stock to climb.

Regardless, it looks like Tesla will accept Dogecoin for merch. At least, for now — that might change with the next tweet.

Google shares new features coming with Android 12 Go Edition next year

Google announced Android 12 Go Edition, an update to the company’s operating system for low-cost phones, via a blog post on Tuesday. Along with the announcement, Google noted several features coming with the update when it rolls out next year.

First and foremost is a significant performance improvement. Google says that Android 12 Go will launch apps up to 30 percent faster and with smoother animations. Additionally, the search giant added the ‘SplashScreen API,’ which will let developers add splash screens to their apps similar to regular Android 12.

Android 12 Go also includes a new feature that can help improve battery life and reclaim storage for users by “hibernating” apps that people haven’t used in a long time. Additionally, the new Go Edition includes intelligent features, like a built-in ability to listen to or translate on-screen content right from the recent apps menu.

Another neat new feature is app sharing through Nearby Share. It sounds a lot like this will allow users to leverage the ‘Nearby Share’ feature to send apps to other Android 12 Go users, which could be a great feature for users who don’t have reliable access to Wi-Fi or data.

Speaking of sharing, Android 12 Go includes a simplified guest experience and profiles so people can easily share devices with other people.

Finally, Android 12 Go includes privacy features, including the new ‘Privacy dashboard’ and the microphone and camera indicators available in Android 12. Android 12 Go includes the new approximate location permission too.

Overall, Android 12 Go looks like a really nice improvement. If it really does bring as significant performance upgrades as Google says, this could revitalize some sluggish Android 11 Go devices.

Android 12 Go will launch in 2022 — you can learn more about Android Go Edition here.

Canadians can pre-order Microsoft’s Xbox mini-fridge starting December 15

Canadian Xbox fans will be able to pre-order their very own Xbox Series X ‘Mini Fridge’ via the Microsoft Store starting December 15th.

Microsoft confirmed to MobileSyrup that pre-orders would open Wednesday, December 15th at 9am ET/6am PT. The Xbox mini-fridges will start shipping by January 31st, 2022. Further, the mini-fridge will cost $129.99 CAD.

Microsoft first confirmed that it will sell the Xbox Series X Mini Fridge on October 15th. Initially, the company said that it would sell the mini-fridge via Target.com in Canada, however, the company later revealed that Target can’t offer shipping to Canada. Instead, Xbox general manager Aaron Greenberg tweeted that the mini-fridge would be available directly from the Xbox Gear Shop in December.

For those who haven’t followed the mini-fridge sage, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Mini Fridge is a 1:1 scale replica of its newest Xbox console. It’s also a fridge. The Xbox mini-fridge began as a joke and, while silly, it’s neat to see Microsoft play along and actually make an Xbox-like fridge.

Those interested can pre-order the Xbox Series X Mini Fridge on the Xbox Gear Shop.
