You can now scan for nearby AirTags using this official Android app

Apple has released a new Play Store app that will allow Android users to scan its ‘Find My’ network to find a misplaced AirTag or other devices that support the platform.

First revealed back in June, the app, ‘Tracker Detect,’ requires users to be running Android 9 or higher to search for Find My-powered trackers.

“Tracker Detect looks for item trackers that are separated from their owner and that are compatible with Apple’s Find My network,” reads the app description on the Play Store. “These item trackers include AirTag and compatible devices from other companies. If you think someone is using AirTag or another device to track your location, you can scan to try to find it.”

To look for nearby AirTags, you simply tap the blue ‘Scan’ button and any misplaced trackers near you will appear on the results page.

It’s worth noting that the app appears to be unavailable in Canada at the moment, but that it should be hitting our Play Store soon.

Samsung Galaxy S22 series live images showcases rear of devices

With Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series only rumoured to be a month or two away from release, it makes sense that we’d start seeing leaked live images of the rumoured flagship smartphone line. This most recent leak showcases the rear of the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra.

The South Korean company’s trio of smartphones comes in various shapes and sizes, so let’s dive in and unpack the leaked images.

The S22, the smallest of the three devices, seems to sport a glossy rear, three cameras and a small form factor. Its camera array looks like it’s constructed of different materials and that is possibly features a more S21-like bump.

Next up, the S22+ also features a glossy back and a similar form factor. Further camera setup seems like it doesn’t protrude very far from the rear of the smartphone.

Lastly, is the S22 Ultra — or what some are calling the S22 Note — offers a very rectangular body and what looks like five camera sensors. The rear is also matte, which is different than the other two models in the S22 lineup.

Past leaks indicate that Ultra will sport a next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 5,000mAh battery, up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage and more.

The S22 series will likely be revealed in January or February 2022.

Microsoft releases ‘Power On’ docuseries looking back on 20 years of Xbox

Microsoft has released a brand-new, free documentary series unpacking 20 years of Xbox.

Titled Power On: The Story of Xbox, the six-part docuseries covers everything from Microsoft’s development of the original Xbox to the time the company attempted to purchase Nintendo and, of course, the infamous ‘Red Rings of Death’ Xbox 360 fiasco.

Notably, Don Mattrick, the Canadian businessman who served as head of Xbox during the launch of the Xbox One, makes an appearance in Power On — the first since he left the company. Mattrick is infamous in the gaming industry for positioning the Xbox One as an “always connected,” general entertainment device before current Xbox head Phil Spencer took over and made overall well-received changes.

All episodes are available in 30 languages on a variety of digital platforms, including Xbox’s YouTube channel and Microsoft’s Movies & TV app.

Xbox has released Power On to celebrate its 20th anniversary, which fell on November 15th. Other 20th anniversary celebrations include the staggered release of Halo Infinite and a slew of new backwards compatible games.

Toyota wants you to pay a subscription fee to start your car remotely

Starting your car’s engine remotely is a beneficial feature, especially for those who live in countries with harsh winters; however, it appears as though Toyota car users will have to pay a price for the convenience.

According to a report from The Drive, 2018 or later-released Toyota vehicle owners will need to sign up for a subscription to use their key fob as a remote car starter after their trial period ends. When purchasing a new Toyota vehicle, buyers will have an option to try out Toyota’s Connected Services, which includes features like hotspot connectivity, emergency assistance and remote functionality.

After the trial period ends, Toyota users will need to pay a subscription cost to continue using the Connected Services. Also worth noting is that the length of the trial period you get depends on the audio package that’s included with the vehicle.

The news that Toyota will disable the remote functionality for users once the trial period ends, and charge customers for it first came out on Reddit via Toyota’s Remote Connect flyer. It details how some cars, that come with Toyota’s Audio Plus package will have the functionality available for up to three years before the customer has to start paying for the service.

Similarly, cars that come with Toyota’s Premium Audio package will have the key fob functionality enabled for up to 10 years, after which, the customer will have to pay a subscription fee to keep using the service.

After the trial period ends, which doesn’t really seem like a trial period considering it can run almost 10 years, drivers would have to pay $8/month or $80/year to continue using the key fob services.

PlayStation will finally sell its own coloured PS5 faceplates

PlayStation will begin selling PS5 console covers in the first half of 2022.

On the PlayStation Blog, the company unveiled five colour options: Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Nova Pink, Galactic Purple and Starlight Blue.

The ‘Midnight Black’ and ‘Cosmic Red’ plates will become available in Canada starting in January 2022, while the remaining three colours will debut here sometime between then and June. All of these faceplates will cost $55 USD (about $70 CAD) and be compatible with both the standard PS5 and the disc-less Digital Edition model.

It’s a notable move from PlayStation. Toronto-based Dbrand had previously been selling unofficial faceplates, although PlayStation shut that business down in October.

When the PS5 launched in November 2020, it was only offered in white — a somewhat odd decision, given that all previous PlayStation hardware — as well most other consoles — have been black or grey.

One of the notable aspects of the PS5’s design is the fact that the faceplates can be easily detached and swapped out if desired.

Additionally, PlayStation is introducing three new PS5 DualSense controller colours to match the faceplates: Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple. These will launch in January 2022 and, alongside the Midnight Black and Cosmic Red controllers, will provide matching colours to the PS5 faceplates.

We’ve reached out to PlayStation for Canadian pricing and will update this story once a response has been received.
