Browser extension reveals products surprisingly sold by Amazon brands

When shopping on Amazon, you’ll often see a mix of products sold by Amazon and sold by third parties on Amazon’s platform. Research from non-profit tech publication The Markup found that Amazon likes to place its products more prominently, often higher in search results than similar products with more, and better, reviews.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to tell which products are an Amazon brand and which aren’t when browsing the e-commerce platform. That’s where The Markup’s new ‘Amazon Brand Detector’ browser extension comes in: it can highlight Amazon brands in search results.

The Markup detailed how it gathered data for the browser extension, which involved running searches on Amazon and checking the ‘Our brands’ filter, using an undocumented API that shows all Amazon ‘our brands’ products for a given search and more. The result was the “largest and most comprehensive open access dataset of Amazon brand and Amazon-exclusive products,” but The Markup notes it’s not complete. The publication’s data set included over 137,000 unique products, but in 2019 Amazon told Congress that it sold approximately 158,000 products from its own brands.

It’s worth noting that Amazon does list some of its “private and select exclusive brands” on this webpage. Some of those are private labels owned by Amazon, while others are “curated selections” that are sold exclusively on the platform but aren’t necessarily operated by Amazon.

But, there are other brands — some described as “letter-soup” brands with names like ‘Weeso’ and ‘Ofeefan’ — and ones like ‘Daily Ritual,’ which isn’t on Amazon’s brands page but designates itself an Amazon brand on some of its product pages.

Amazon’s brands tend to crowd out products from other companies

The issue isn’t necessarily that Amazon has all these brands so much as how it impacts customers. Grocery stores, for example, have their own brands. However, all the brands usually end up in the same spot — all the cereal boxes will be in the cereal section. As The Verge puts it, items on the third page of search results are more hidden than those on the bottom of a shelf in a supermarket.

With any online search, whether Amazon, Google or other platforms, the first page of results is the most coveted because people tend not to go beyond that page. Amazon’s brands clog up that first page of results — space that could go to other brands with better reviews or higher sales numbers.

Customers might not care who’s selling these products. But for those who do like to know where their money is going (or who want to avoid handing Amazon more money than they already do), the Amazon Brand Detector extension could help.

The extension is free, available on Chrome-based browsers and Firefox, and The Markup says it doesn’t collect any data. You can learn more about it here.

Older Pixel phones get updated with slightly better controls

Google is now rolling out some camera features for the Google Pixel series of devices that can help make the camera a little better.

The most noticeable update is a new gear camera settings icon beside the arrow at the top of the screen. Beyond that, the camera is also getting a new manual sub-section in the camera’s settings that allows you to disable the exposure slider if you want fewer controls.

There is still no actual ‘Pro’ mode that allows you to control the camera manually, but perhaps this sub-section hints at more to come.

The final update sits in the ‘Advanced’ section of the Camera app’s settings, and it allows you to use the flash as a countdown timer so you can more accurately track when a timed photo is about to go off.

9to5Google says that version 8.4.300.x carries the update, and it’s rolling out to Pixel 5 and Pixel 6 devices. Ideally, Pixel 4a and older Pixels will get the update soon.

Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip with improved camera, AI features

Qualcomm announced its newest flagship system-on-a-chip (SoC) at its annual Tech Summit event in Hawaii on November 30th. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 succeeds last year’s Snapdragon 888, ushering in new branding and higher performance.

Despite the new name, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 still focuses on 5G, AI, gaming and more. On the connectivity side, the 8 Gen 1 boasts the 4th gen Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF system, which Qualcomm says can hit 10-gigabit download speeds. Moreover, Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6900 system returns, offering support for Wi-Fi 6 and 6E with speeds up to 3.6Gbps.

Image processing is another important area this year, with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sight technology including the first 18-bit image signal processor (ISP) ever for mobile. Qualcomm says the ISP can capture over 4,000x more camera data than its predecessor for better dynamic range, colour and sharpness. Capture speeds can go as high as 3.2-gigapixels per second.

Qualcomm says the new Snapdragon Sight system is the first mobile platform capable of capturing 8K HDR video using the HDR10+ format. There’s a new ‘Bokeh Engine’ as well that can add soft backgrounds to video. The company compared the capability to portrait mode, but it sounds a lot like Apple’s new Cinematic Mode to me.

Finally, Qualcomm’s camera tech includes a fourth, separate ‘Always-On ISP’ that can run the camera at low power for faster face unlock features.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 boasts improved AI chops

On the artificial intelligence (AI) side, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 includes Qualcomm’s 7th gen AI Engine running on the high-performance Qualcomm Hexagon processor. Qualcomm says it features a two times faster tensor accelerator and two times larger shared memory than its predecessor. It also has integrated ‘Leica Leitz Look’ filters to improve image quality, particularly bokeh.

The AI Engine also includes language processing from ‘Hugging Face,’ which Qualcomm says can intelligently serve as users’ personal assistant by prioritizing and analyzing notifications. Qualcomm worked with Sonde Health to use on-device AI to accelerate models that analyze users’ vocal patterns to determine risk for health conditions like asthma, depression and COVID-19. Finally, the AI Engine includes Qualcomm’s 3rd gen Sensing Hub for always-on AI systems processed in a low-power environment.

As usual, Qualcomm made some bold claims about gaming on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. First, the SoC includes “over 50 Snapdragon Elite Gaming features” and delivers “desktop-level capabilities.” The most important thing here is the improved performance of the Adreno GPU in the 8 Gen 1. Qualcomm says it has a 30 percent boost in graphics rendering capabilities and a 25 percent improvement in power savings compared to the previous generation.

Other features include the ‘Adreno Frame Motion Engine,’ which Qualcomm says can generate twice as many frames while maintaining the same power consumption.  There’s also ‘Variable Rate Shading Pro’ and a volumetric rendering solution that Qualcomm claims brings “unrivalled realism” to game effects like fog, smoke and particle effects.

Better sound and improved security

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will support Bluetooth 5.2 and Snapdragon Sound tech, including Qualcomm’s aptX Lossless tech and new low-energy (LE) audio features.

When it comes to security, Qualcomm described the new chip as “vault-like.” It’s the first Snapdragon platform to include a dedicated ‘Trust Management Engine’ for security and it supports ‘Android Ready SE’ for digital car keys, driver’s licenses and more.

As with any major new chip release, it’s important to manage expectations and wait for real-world tests. Qualcomm certainly makes the 8 Gen 1 sound like a major improvement over the Snapdragon 888. And while it likely is better, it remains to be seen just how much better it actually is.

You can learn more about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on Qualcomm’s website.

Mobile traffic increased 300 times over the last decade, report

Mobility usage over the last decade has skyrocketed as more people gained access to cellphones and associated networks than ever before.

The finding is outlined in a recent report released by Ericsson examining worldwide usage over the last 10 years.

Since the organization released its last report in 2011, a number of changes have happened.

The number of users subscribed to a 4G network has increased dramatically: in 2011, this number sat at 9 million. Now estimates show there will be 4.7 billion subscriptions by the end of the year.

Over the last decade, new smartphone subscribers have increased by 5.5 billion and mobile networks carry 300 times more traffic.

The report indicates this increase wasn’t expected. In 2011, most data came from laptops with cellular connections, but smartphones were growing in popularity.

“The visible market drivers at the time led us to underestimate the pace of smartphone and 4G subscription growth — and thereby also traffic growth on handheld devices — while overestimating the potential growth of 4G-connected laptops and tablets, as the smartphone became the device of choice for connecting other devices over Wi-Fi to the mobile network,” the report says.

Numerous events shaped this growth, which was further driven by network capabilities, tariffs, and market legislation.

The first event came in 2015 when a U.S.-based service provider offered bundles “with a zero-rated unlimited offering” for popular video services. Competitors soon offered similar bundles, contributing to a global increase in traffic.

The next major event came in 2017, when a new competitor entered the telecom market in India and offered competitive rates on 4G, leading to an increase in new users and subsequent traffic.

An impact was also seen in 2018 when 4G arrived in China, much later than in other markets.

Future trends

The report notes future trends can be hard to predict because things can change based on information not yet available.

The authors do expect, however, for 5G to grow incredibly fast, outpacing the growth of previous generations.

More than 180 service providers have launched 5G services across the world. Estimates show there will be 660 million 5G subscribers by the end of the year, mainly from strong demand in China and North America.

The continent has the second-highest number of 5G subscribers in the world, following North-East Asia, and is expected to move to first place by 2027.

“In North America, 5G commercialization is moving at a rapid pace. Service providers have launched commercial 5G services, focusing on mobile broadband and fixed wireless access (FWA),” the report says.

5G is further expected to take over 4G by the end of 2027, with an estimated 4.4 billion subscriptions. It’s also expected to grow faster than its previous counterpart, thanks, in part, to the availability of devices and lower prices.

4G subscriptions are expected to reach their maximum at 4.7 million by the end of the year. The research notes subscribers will decline to 3.3 billion by 2027, given they’ll be shifting to the newer 5G network

Growth of 5G

The network is expected to grow in every region, but there are a few notable factors to point out around the world.

While 5G network will grow alongside 4G in Sub-Saharan Africa, high speed packet access (HSPA) will remain dominant, representing 40 percent of users in 2027. HSPA is made of two mobile protocols that improve the performance of existing 3G networks using wideband code-division multiple access (WCDMA) protocols.

In India, 4G networks are expected to hold dominance but will see a decrease as users move to 5G. Subscriptions are expected to reduce from 68 percent in 2021 to 55 percent in 2027.

In Central and Eastern Europe, a similar forecast is predicted as 4G is expected to stay on top.

“In 2027, 4G will remain the dominant technology and is expected to account for 59 percent of mobile subscriptions, while 5G subscriptions are forecast to make up 41 percent.”

WCDMA/HSPA will decline to “virtually zero.”

A similar decline will also be seen in Western Europe as 5G subscriptions are expected to reach 83 percent by the end of 2027.

By 2027, 5G is expected to cover 75 percent of the population and be the fastest-deployed communication technology in history. Coverage in high population countries is one contributing factor to this.

In response, researchers have noticed the phenomenon of sunsetting or network sunsets. This is characterized by newer networks, like 4G and 5G, causing legacy networks like 2G and 3G, to shut down.

This can be categorized into three different waves.

In wave one, North American and Australia, among other parts of the world, have already shut down 2G networks and are expected to shut down 3G before the mid-2020s.

Wave two has seen Western Europe sunsetting 3G over 2G, given its larger dependency on it. The sunsetting of 3g is expected to last until the mid-2020s.

The third wave includes countries with a larger dependency on legacy technology because of the lower concentration of 4G and 5G networks. These places won’t see network sunsets for 2G and 3G until the end of 2030.

Amazon’s Appstore doesn’t work on Android 12

A benefit of Android is that you can use third-party app stores if you don’t want to use Google’s Play Store. Unfortunately for fans of Amazon’s Appstore, the Android 12 update broke functionality, and it’s been over a month with no fix in sight.

Reports from PiunikaWeb and Liliputing, highlighted by 9to5Google, point out the issue was brought to Amazon’s attention nearly a month ago. On November 14th, an Amazon staff member acknowledged the problem on the company’s forum, noting that the “technical team is aware of the issue” and “are still working on the resolution.”

Liliputing notes that the issue appears to be related to Amazon’s DRM. Some users reportedly had success downloading apps from the Appstore on another device, editing the APK file to remove the DRM and then moving it to an Android 12 device, where the app would run fine. Unfortunately, that temporary workaround is too technical for most people (including myself).

9to5 also notes that Amazon added a notice to its Appstore app earlier this week, warning users that it’s “working through some issues.”

For now, the issue likely only impacts a small group of people with Android 12 (at this point, that’s probably just Pixel owners). However, the problem is bound to get worse as more manufacturers push Android 12 updates out — notable, Samsung, which has started rolling out Android 12 to its recent S21 series phones (or, will start soon in Canada).

If you’re a big fan of Amazon’s Appstore, you’ll likely have to wait a little longer for a fix.
