How to keep your smartphone healthy during frigid Canadian winters

Canadian winters are extreme. It might not seem so, but just like us, your smartphone, too, needs a little extra care during frigid temperatures.

Extreme cold weather can cause your device to rapidly drain battery, suffer screen damage, and even freeze. Here are some tips to extend your device’s life if you live in areas with subzero temperatures:

Keeping your smartphone dry

Snow, rain, and moisture in the air can damage your smartphone’s internal components over time and cause it to malfunction. To prevent water damage, keep your smartphone in a waterproof case or a waterproof phone pouch when you know the weather conditions outside aren’t pretty. You can also wipe your smartphone with a dry cloth before and after you use it outdoors to remove any moisture.

It’s worth noting that most, if not all, current-gen smartphones already offer water resistance that helps against moisture, but you might want to keep your phone dry anyway. Better safe than sorry.

Keeping your smartphone warm

Cold temperatures can cause your phone’s battery to drain faster. In general, when the temperature drops below 0, it lowers the amount of power your phone’s battery can hold, and causes it to drain more quickly. Lithium-ion batteries produce power by means of an internal chemical reaction. Cold temperatures make it more difficult for the reaction to occur, and hence, your device discharges more quickly. Additionally, the battery has to work harder to provide your phone with power during subzero temperatures, which in turn results in a lot of power being wasted.

To keep your smartphone warm during the cold months, avoid leaving it in your car or outside in the cold for long periods. Keep your smartphone in your jacket’s pocket or in a pocket close to your body to maintain its temperature.

Keeping your smartphone away from extreme temperatures

It’s advisable to prevent your smartphone from being exposed to extremely hot or cold conditions. For instance, avoid leaving your smartphone on your car’s dashboard during hot summer days and don’t bring it outside with you if you plan to build a snowman on a snowy day.

What to do if your phone shuts down due to cold temperatures?

If you’re out and about and your phone suddenly shuts down, don’t immediately turn it back on. You should warm up your phone gradually to room temperature, without applying any external heat directly. It is advisable to go indoors, or in a heated car if possible and wait for the phone to warm up. Once the phone has warmed up to room temperature, turn it back on and check if it’s functioning properly.

To prevent your phone from shutting down in extremely cold temperatures, you can invest in an insulated phone case like this one.

Meta is working on a decentralized Twitter competitor

Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta are looking to expand to Twitter-like text-based platforms.

According to Platformer and MoneyControl, Meta is reportedly working on a new decentralized social network that, like Mastadon, could offer an alternative to Twitter. The social networking giant is reportedly in the early stages of developing an app called P92. The app would allow users to post text-based updates and also support Mastodon’s social networking protocol, ActivityPub.

“We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates,” Meta told Platformer in an email. “We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.”

Users would reportedly be able to log into their P92 accounts using their Instagram credentials.

Since P92 will be decentralized, users will be able to set up their own servers and make their own rules for content moderation, with a set of “floor” rules set by Meta, similar to how Reddit communities work. Instagram head Adam Mosseri is reportedly leading the project, and he wants the app to have tappable links for posts with previews, shareable images and videos, as well as verification badges. Not much else was revealed about the project, and we’re uncertain when P92 would see the light of day.

While it’ll likely be a while until P92 is usable, the prospect of a decentralized social network from Meta is exciting nonetheless.

Xbox confirms it won’t be on E3 2023 show floor

Xbox will not be on the E3 show floor this year but will instead co-stream the event when it starts on June 11th.

An Xbox spokesperson told IGN that “we can’t wait to host our Xbox Games Showcase on June 11 and will share more details later. We also look forward to co-streaming our event as part of E3 Digital and will not be on the E3 show floor.”

Last month, IGN reported that PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox will not formally attend E3 2023. Nintendo will completely miss the event, and Xbox will hold its own showcase.

Earlier this week, Bethesda announced that it will host an Xbox Games Showcase on June 11th, and it will share more details on Starfield immediately after that show.

It’s also been revealed that E3 2023 will have a digital showcase, but studio participation is unclear. Ubisoft has confirmed it will take part in E3 this year, but it’s unclear which other publishers will be taking part in the event.

E3 2023’s physical event will take place from June 13th to 16th and be split between days for professionals and fans.

Canada remains at top of list for highest wireless, broadband prices in the world, government study shows

The government’s recently released price analysis shows MVNOs charge less for mobile services than incumbents Bell, Telus and Rogers.

The 2022 telecom services price comparison study, prepared by Wall Communications, found “MVNOs offer lower prices (often substantially lower) than incumbents in every basket where they compete.”

The study examined pricing from MVNOs Primus, PC Mobile and Petro-Can. “We note that MVNO prices tend to be highly uniform across the country, more so than incumbent prices,” the analysis states.

Price comparison is based on the “service basket” approach, which examines eight different levels of services. The average price decrease across all levels between 2021 and 2022 is 2.6 percent. This lacks compared to the 17 percent decrease reported in the 2021 report.

In 2022, average mobile plans ranged from $26.19 to $101.74 monthly for plans between baskets 1 and 8.

The analysis found PC Mobile charged the least for talk and text (basket 1) and plans with 2-4GB (basket 3) categories.

SaskTel was the lowest for the 1GB data category (basket 2).

Fido, in Quebec only, offered the lowest prices for plans with 5-6 GB data (basket 4).

Lucky, in Quebec, offered the lowest prices in the 7-9 GB data (basket 5) and 10-19 GB data (basket 6) categories.

Fizz, also only in Quebec, had the lowest prices in the 20-49 GB data (basket 7) and 50-99 GB data (basket 8) categories.

Incumbents or their flankers offered the highest prices in most of the categories. The study included the following flanker brands: Virgin, Fido, Koodo and Fizz. Regional providers include Freedom, SaskTel, Vidéotron and Eastlink.

Overall, the study found flankers nationally offered prices that were 9.5 percent lower than the incumbents. Pricing from regional providers was typically lower than flankers in Ontario and B.C. but higher in other regions.

Internationally, Canada, Japan, and the U.S. offer the highest mobile prices across the world. However, the study found Canada “performs favourably” compared to the other two.

Fixed broadband internet

The category is measured in seven baskets. The report shows prices “decreased or increased just slightly” in every basket in 2022 compared to 2021, which saw increases across the board. Prices declined between 1 to 4 percent on average in 2022.

The study examined prices from Wholesale-based competitors (WBS), Distributel, TekSavvy and VMedia (in Saskatchewan and Manitoba), incumbents, and flanker brands (which only offer services in Ontario and Quebec).

The study found WBCs offered lower prices than incumbents in lower baskets, similar to last year’s report.

Quebec’s flanker brands include Virgin and Fizz, while Ontario has Virgin and Fido. The analysis found flankers offered lower prices compared to incumbents (between 5 and 38 percent). Flankers also offered lower prices than WBCs in Quebec, but not in Ontario.

Compared internationally, the study found the U.K., France, Italy and Germany offer lower broadband prices than Canada. The U.S. also offered lower prices in 2022, despite the country offering higher or similar prices to Canada in 2021.

Far North

The Wall study looked at services in Iqaluit, Whitehorse and Yellowknife but has limited data. It found prices from national providers (Rogers, Bell and Telus) are similar in the areas they offer services. Ice Wireless and SSi (Qiniq) also offer services where applicable. Options for internet are also limited as NWTel is the provider to have “comprehensive services.”

Reddit is killing the Clubhouse competitor you didn’t know it had

Reddit is sunsetting Reddit Talk, a tool that allows users to partake in live audio conversations.

The change will occur “in the coming weeks,” the company wrote in a post on its website.

“Supporting Talk in the short-term requires significant resourcing — more than we anticipated,” the platform explained. “Reddit’s goal is to become the de facto home for communities. Audio, like Talk, has a place in that. However, there’s significant work we need to do — like making Reddit simpler and building better subreddit infrastructure — before incorporating audio.”

The company’s original plan involved maintaining the program while it worked on other aspects, but the third party it uses to host the audio function is shutting down.

A competitor to Clubhouse, Reddit introduced Talk back in April 2021. But whether or not it’ll come back is something the company can’t confirm. “We don’t have a timeline to bring Talk or an audio product back in the future, however we will share any updates when we have them.”

Conversations hosted after September 1st, 2022, will be available to download starting March 21st. Users will have until June 1st to complete downloads. The company says it will post more details on its website soon.
