Microsoft, Qualcomm reportedly have Windows on ARM exclusivity deal — it’s ending soon

If you’ve paid much attention to the Windows on ARM space, you may have noticed that it’s a rather limited space at the moment. Only a few Windows on ARM devices are available, and all of them run Qualcomm chips (for better and worse). Apparently, there’s a reason for that: Qualcomm and Microsoft have an exclusivity deal.

As reported by XDA Developers, people “familiar” with the matter claim the deal between Microsoft and Qualcomm is set to end soon. It’s not clear how long the deal’s been in place or when, exactly, it will end. But if the report is accurate, it could mean we’ll see a lot more ARM chips for Windows devices soon.

For example, Samsung could want to get into Windows on ARM. The company already makes Windows laptops and recently partnered with AMD on graphics for Exynos chips. A logicial next step could be bringing Exynos to its laptop line. Similarly, MediaTek announced last week that it plans to start building a chipset for Windows on ARM.

That could also clear the way for running ARM-based Windows on Apple’s M-series chips. Previously, Apple’s vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, said it was up to Microsoft to get Windows on ARM onto the new Mac computers. Specifically, Federighi said it was a licensing issue, with Microsoft only licensing Windows on ARM to manufacturers to pre-install on devices, not to consumers. That said, Apple also didn’t support Boot Camp — its software to allow users to boot Windows on their Mac devices — on M-series chips, leaving Parallels and other virtualization tech as one of the few ways to get Windows onto Apple Silicon Macs.

The most important takeaway from the Qualcomm report is that it could finally open up Windows on ARM to some sorely-needed competition and innovation. Windows on ARM has a lot of problems, but if there were more ARM chips for Windows devices, and more Windows on ARM devices in general, it could help spur developers to improve the Windows ARM experience faster. It could also push manufacturers to create better chips to get an edge over the competition.

To be fair, Windows on ARM has come a long way, but in most cases, it still feels underpowered compared to Windows on x86 chips from Intel or AMD.

New OnePlus 10 leak suggest a global launch in April

A new leak has surfaced courtesy of Steve Hemmerstoffer that details the launch windows and other specs related to OnePlus’ upcoming OnePlus 10 Pro smartphone.

Like the OnePlus 9 Pro, the device will feature a 120Hz 6.7-inch display. However, the rumoured smartphone is also tipped to feature a 5,000 mAh battery and a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8-series chipset.

Depending on the model, users can expect 8-12GB of RAM and 128-256GB of storage. The phone, like most modern flagships, will also sport an IP68 water/dust-proof rating, according to the leak.

The leak also suggests that the OnePlus 10 will feature a 32-megapixel selfie camera on the front tucked into the top right corner of the device. This should help the device snap crisp images, but it’s nothing compared to the 48-megapixel primary camera or the 50-megapixel ultrawide on the rear. There’s also a smaller 8-megapixel zoom camera. This new leak also lines up with yesterday’s report regarding the OnePlus 10 offering 3.3x zoom.

The weirdest aspect of this leak is that it indicates OnePlus might start releasing its smartphones in China first, followed by Europe and North America.

Window 11 ditches cool-looking 3D emoji for boring 2D versions

Microsoft’s new emoji are headed to Windows 11 this week as part of a new, optional OS update. However, the new emojis look a little flatter than they should.

If you followed much of the Windows 11 development, you’ve likely seen the wild 3D emoji Microsoft was developing. The emoji looked fantastic and I was quite disappointed when I made the jump to Windows 11 and they weren’t available.

Now that the new emoji are coming to Windows 11, Microsoft has managed to disappoint again by releasing 2D versions of the excellent 3D emoji. As you may have already guessed, the 2D versions are not nearly as good as the 3D ones. While the 2D emoji lack the 3D elements that really made the set pop, I do think the new 2D emoji are generally better than the 2D Windows 10 emoji.

It’s also worth noting that Microsoft updated a post on its design blog from July about the new 3D emoji to note that Windows 11 will have 2D versions of the emoji instead. Despite the change, that blog post still says Microsoft “opted for 3D designs over 2D and chose to animate the majority of [its] emoji.”

The Verge points out that the change could be caused by Microsoft’s ‘color font format‘ for displaying emoji in Windows. It’s a vector format that allows for greater scalability, but also has file-size benefits for flat emoji, compared to something like a bitmap format, such as what Apple uses for its emoji.

Although Windows 11 won’t get the 3D emoji, that doesn’t mean Microsoft won’t use them elsewhere. The company is still expected to add the 3D and animated versions of the emoji to products like Teams. Whatever happens with the emoji, one thing is clear: you’ll need Windows 11. In the blog post update, Microsoft says it “still offers an assortment of emojis for Windows 10 customers,” implying the new emoji set won’t roll out to Windows 10.

Along with the emoji, the new Windows 11 update includes several bug fixes. You can learn more about it here.

Analogue’s Pocket to finally start shipping December 13

Analogue’s Pocket handheld has been given an exact release date by the company. The unique handheld console capable of playing retro Game Boy, Neo GEO Pocket Color, and Atari Lynx games will start shipping on December 13th.

Following several delays, Analogue is committed to begin shipping most pre-orders before the end of the year. Announced via Twitter, the company says that an email has been sent to all who pre-ordered the device. Details on address updating can also be found via a link provided by Analogue.

For those who may be away from home for the holidays, Analogue suggests customers hold their orders. In this case, the Pocket will be shipped early next year, around January 3rd. Last-minute updates to an order must be made by November 28th.

Analogue first announced the $199 USD (approximately $252 CAD) Pocket back in October 2019. The device was first expected to ship in 2020 but faced multiple delays as the company struggled with supply chain hurdles throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Analogue’s Pocket has been met with a fair amount of anticipation. The promise of playing Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color and Atari Lynx games all on one device was enticing for nostalgic players.

The Pocket features a 3.5-inch backlit screen with a resolution of 1600 x 1440 pixels. ROMS can also be played on the device via the MicroSD slot. Additionally, the Pocket is selling a dock to play games on a TV through HDMI support. This is an additional cost as it is not included alongside the Pocket.

Due to Nintendo’s hesitation to support many of its Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles on Switch, Analogue’s Pocket is a way for those games to be enjoyed within modern conventions, especially if players don’t want to bring out their Super Nintendo and Super Game Boy to play on their TV.

Tile’s revenue said to be up despite competition from Apple’s AirTag

Tile CEO CJ Prober has recently stated that revenue from its line of Bluetooth tracking devices is up. The company’s success is maintained despite what Prober believes is “unfair competition” from Apple and its AirTag.

According to Prober, Tile has sold 40 million devices. This is despite the direct competition from Apple since the launch of AirTags back in May of this year. The CEO went on to state that “Revenue was up in the first half of the year,” which could be surprising seeing as how similar Apple’s AirTags function in comparison.

Business remains on an upward trajectory and Tile is said to be up 200-percent year-over-year. That said, Prober believes Apple is still self-preferencing. Speaking to Wired, Prober recalled a time that Tile’s products could be purchased from the Apple Store.

However, “very quickly, we got kicked out of their stores.” Prober believes Apple made changes to the iOS software “that deprecated our experience,” while boosting the AirTag and its ‘Find My’ network. Prober encourages and “welcomes competition from Apple,” though he believes it has to be fair.

In response to claims of self-preferential treatment, Apple spoke to Wired and denied any purposeful unfairness in the following statement:

“We made APIs available this summer and have been working with UWB chipset developers to ensure iOS compatibility — some already have development kits available for purchase,” an Apple spokesperson told Wired. “We have always embraced competition as the best way to drive great experiences for our customers, and we have worked hard to build a platform in iOS that enables third-party developers to thrive.”

Last month, Tile revealed its refreshed lineup. The new series of products include Mate, Sticker and Pro trackers. Tile hopes to offer water resistance and have an extended range over what’s currently available. Tile’s catalogue of products offers options for customers to choose the essentials they need in a tracking device. It also enables users to prioritize volume over battery warranty when looking at the Pro device over the Mate or Sticker.

Apple’s AirTag, on the other hand, is still in its infancy. AirTags were released in May and are only available in the one model for $39. However, Apple has released a series of accessories alongside its tracking device.
