Amazon orb-shaped Echo speakers can sense your presence now

Amazon has flipped a switch and its latest Echo and Echo Dot smart speakers (the circular models) can use ultrasound to detect if people are in a room.

The purpose of this is to help turn off lights and connected devices when a person leaves a room without any input from the user. You can disable this feature from the Alexa app, but it will be on by default for most people. It’s located under the ‘Motion’ subheading in the app. Privacy-minded individuals may also want to know that this ultrasound system uses the microphones on the speaker to receive feedback.

Inside the app, you can also use this feature to set up routines to turn on lights or play music when someone enters/exits a room. This allows you to use an Echo in place of an actual Motion sensor, which should allow for less tech-clutter around your house. Amazon’s new Echo Show devices do this with a camera, so this now means that motion-sensing is a pretty standard Echo feature.

Google also uses ultrasound on its Mini and Nest Home smart display to detect when people are nearby. The Nest Mini will display volume controls, and the Nest hub displays will alter its interface to be more easily readable when people are standing far away.

However, Google doesn’t allow users to utilize this tech to set up routines like Amazon does.

There’s a fix coming for missing Magic Eraser on Pixel 6

Some Pixel 6 users have lost access to ‘Magic Eraser,’ Google Photos’ coolest new feature, after downloading a recent update.

The tool, which lets you remove people from the background of photos, started disappearing on some Pixel 6 users’ devices shortly after the smartphone series’ release. Thankfully, Google is working on a fix, according to Android Central. While the feature vanishing is caused by an early rollout of the Magic Eraser, it’s strange that the update only affected some users.

If you’re Magic Eraser is gone, you can head over to the Google Photos app properties and uninstall updates to make it appear again. Then, head to the Google Photos app on the Play Store and download the correct update.

In other Pixel 6 news, Google also recently released a fix for the Pixel 6 related to Google Assistant randomly calling people in your contacts list.

Samsung will reportedly launch 64 devices in 2022

While Samsung is globally the largest smartphone manufacturer, it’s still shocking to see that the company plans to launch 64 different smartphones and tablets throughout 2022.

South Korean publication The Elec reports that Samsung has plans to release 64 different devices in 2022, including various foldables, smartphones and tablets. The company plans to launch 20 phones with its Exynos chips, 31 devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets and 14 with the MediaTek chipsets. Of course, as usual, chipset differences will likely be based on region.

More specifically, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 will reportedly feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 898, and the Galaxy S22 series will use both the Snapdragon and Exynos chipsets depending on the release region. However, some devices will use the Exynos processors exclusively, according to the report. For example, the report states that an Exynos chip will power the Galaxy Tab S8 and Galaxy S22 FE.

The Elec also reports that the company plans to ship more than 10 million foldables in 2022, with the South Korean manufacturer projecting a total of 6.9 million devices sold. Finally, the report states that Samsung plans to sell 67 million devices.

Rumours indicate that the Galaxy S22, the South Korean tech giant’s next major smartphone, will release in January or February of next year.

Google releases fix for Pixel 6 autodialing issue

Google has finally fixed one of the Pixel 6 series’ most annoying bug.

For those who are unaware, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro suffered from an issue that caused the device to randomly automatically dial people in your contact list. Now, according to Android Police, the issue has been remedied

The problem relates to Google Assistant’s hotword detection. You can clear the Google app’s cache and settings to briefly resolve the issue, but the only way to prevent it currently is to disable the feature.

The problem was first spotted in early November shortly after the Pixel 6 series release. Google then announced a fix was coming and it’s already here. This all happened in just 10 days, which is pretty impressive on Google’s part.

Google’s new flagship handsets also suffer from a display flickering problem that will be fixed in an upcoming December update.

Microsoft offers brief look at upcoming live-action Halo TV series

Microsoft showed off a very brief trailer for its long-in-development Halo TV series during its 20th anniversary Xbox event, offering a quick look at the Master Chief.

Beyond a glimpse of the green space hero’s Mjolnir armour and Jen Taylor, the voice of Cortana, saying, “Hello Master Chief,” nothing else was revealed about the upcoming series. Master Chief will be played by American Gods’ Pablo Schreiber, who was born in Ymir, B.C.

While Paramount+ is where the Halo TV series will stream in the U.S., it’s unclear if this will also be the case in Canada, given that the streaming platform is very different here.

Though Survivor, NCIS: Los Angeles, Console Wars and more are available in Canada on the streaming service formerly called CBS All Access, several original TV shows, Survivor, Happy Days and more are missing because their Canadian licencing rights are tied to other services. With this in mind, there’s a possibility we could see the Halo TV series stream on a service like Bell-owned Crave, though keeping a notable property like this exclusive to Paramount+ could help drive subscriptions.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first attempt to create a live-action Halo series. For example, Halo 4 released alongside the Forward Unto Dawn web series and Halo: Nightfall streamed as a prequel to Halo 5. While neither series was likely as popular or as well-received as Microsoft hoped, this latest Halo TV show effort seems to be the highest-profile yet.

The Halo TV series is set to release at some point in 2022.

During Microsoft’s Xbox 20th anniversary stream, over 70 new Xbox backwards compatible titles were also revealed.
