Rogers deals could get you an iPhone 12 mini for $2/mo or even $0/mo financing

Rogers has some decent iPhone 12 mini deals going on right now if you’re in the market for a new iPhone and don’t want to spring for a 13 series.

First, RedFlagDeals user ‘redflagmat’ posted that he received an “exclusive” offer via the MyRogers app for an iPhone 12 mini at $2.08 monthly financing using the carrier’s Upfront Edge program (spotted by iPhoneInCanada). $2.08 over two years works out to $49.92.

As for the Upfront Edge portion, the program works by discounting the monthly financing cost of a phone if customers agree to return the device after two years or pay back the discounted amount. For the iPhone 12 mini, the Upfront Edge cost works out to $190, which means all-in you’re looking at $239.92, which is frankly an excellent price for an iPhone. Moreover, you could choose to return the device and get a new phone instead, effectively paying about $50 to borrow an iPhone 12 mini for two years.

And for those worried they would have to change their plan to claim this kind of deal, user redflagmat says they didn’t and are on a $55/mo plan with 20GB of data, which isn’t a bad deal at all.

While it’s definitely worth checking your MyRogers app to see if the deal is available for you, it’s also worth noting that Rogers has another offer on the iPhone 12 mini that seems more accessible. On the carrier’s website right now, there’s a promotion to get an iPhone 12 mini 128GB for $0/mo financing when you trade in an iPhone XR (assuming you get the full $360 trade-in credit). Once again, it’s an Upfront Edge deal, but it’s not so bad if you’re not paying anything in financing.

You can learn more about this offer here, or check out the RedFlagDeals post here.

Google’s shows off Material You Google News and Calendar widgets

Google has announced that its new Android 12 widgets have been developed with ‘Material You’ in mind. While the tech giant’s blog post specifically mentions a new Google Fi widget (Fi isn’t available in Canada), there are several other new widgets designs.

For example, there’s a new Calendar schedule and a new Google News widget. The redesigned Calendar widget adopts a more modern look with the date in the top left corner and the addition of a button in the top-right corner.

The News widget, on the other hand, has been redesigned with a large pill up top, with the publication and corresponding headline sitting below. Additionally, the new Gmail widget features a large ‘new email’ button in the top-right corner.

What’s cool is that some of Google’s renders of the updated widgets show Android 12L running on a tablet. The tech giant recently announced Android 12L, a new version of its mobile OS designed for larger screens, including tablets, foldables and devices that run Chrome OS.

You can learn more about it, Android 12L here.

Carl Pei says bigger companies are hindering ‘Nothing’s’ supply chain

Carl Pei, former OnePlus boss turned CEO of his own tech startup, ‘Nothing,’ has shared that an unnamed tech giant is making it harder for his company access key earbud manufacturing components.

At no point does Pei hint at what company it might be, but I’d expect it would need to be a large tech giant in order to influence how the supply chain flows to a company as small as Nothing. Specifically, Pei says, “To add to the fun, we’ve also had a major incumbent attacking us in the supply chain trying to block our access to key components. We should take that as a sign of respect.”

Also, in his blog post, Pei says that Nothing has shipped out 180,000 of its Ear (1) earbuds with 140,000 more orders to fill. He also claims that he thinks the company will push out 600,000 units of earbuds.

I hope that Nothing can sell that many and continue to make cool-looking tech products, but, unfortunately, the reviews for its Ear (1) Buds haven’t been overwhelmingly positive and they’re constantly out of stock.

Shaw stands by Rogers acquisition in Q4 fiscal report

Shaw Communications used its latest quarterly fiscal report to reaffirm its support for the company’s pending merger with Rogers.

The statement of faith from the Calgary-based telecom comes at a precarious moment, as Rogers is currently in the middle of a messy and highly publicized leadership struggle.

Meanwhile, the Rogers/Shaw merger — valued at $26 billion — continues to face intense scrutiny from government, competitors, and consumer advocates, many of whom argue that the merger will drastically narrow Canada’s telecom market and reduce competition.

In the company’s Q4 fiscal report, CEO Brad Shaw stated that management at Shaw “reiterate our continued commitment to work with Rogers to close the transaction.”

He also went on to say that “it is not appropriate for Shaw to comment on recent events at Rogers.”

In the fourth fiscal quarter of 2021, Shaw reported a net income increase of 44 percent to $252 million.

The report also noted that around 60,500 new wireless customers joined Shaw in Q4, with the company adding roughly 295,000 new wireless customers in the 2021 fiscal year.

This brings Shaw’s total customer base to more than 2.1 million.

For comparison, in fiscal year 2020, Shaw added somewhere over 160,000 new wireless subscribers for a total customer base of just over 1.8 million.

Shaw’s support aside, the acquisition still needs to be approved by three different government regulators: the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the Competition Bureau, and the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.

The CRTC’s public hearing on the Rogers/Shaw deal is scheduled for November 22nd.

Microsoft updates PowerToys with Windows 11 theme and more

Microsoft’s best app, PowerToys, has received a UI update to match the overall theme of Windows 11, and it includes several new features packed in it.

One of the new features allows users to disable their microphone and webcam globally across Windows 11. The other feature is called ‘Find My Mouse,’ and it enables users to doubt tap the CTRL key to shine a spotlight on the mouse.

What’s interesting about the webcam and mic mute functionality is that Windows 11 was supposed to launch with a microphone mute button, but that feature has been delayed and now Microsoft is pushing out a similar feature through the PowerToys utility pack. You can also turn the silent/video disable button into a keyboard shortcut, set it to open up a small control bar whenever an app starts using your webcam.

If you’re unfamiliar with PowerToys, it’s a package of Windows features that Microsoft releases separately through GitHub that adds a suite of subtle features to the operating system. I find PowerToys useful because I like the larger System Search function and the keyboard remapping tool.

However, other features include ‘Fancy Zones’ that let you snap windows to specific sizes more efficiently and a shortcut to help show you what shortcuts you can use in Windows 10 and 11. You can read a little more about it in our prior coverage and download PowerToys from Microsoft here.

iOS to gain access to Pixel-exclusive ‘Locked Folders’ via Google Photos next year

Thanks to a new feature coming to the iOS and iPadOS apps, Google Photos users on iPhone and iPad will soon be able to lock their sensitive photographs in a dedicated passcode-protected folder.

The Locked Folder, which first appeared in Pixel phones in Google’s June feature drop can be utilized to hide sensitive and secret information, including images and videos.

Since there is no built-in ‘Lock Folder’ to hide specific photos in iOS, iPhone users will be able to safeguard their personal photos in a protected folder Google Photos. According to Google’s blog post, the feature will be available to iOS users early next year.

Google’s blog also noted that the company’s Google One VPN service is expanding to 10 new countries starting this week, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. In Canada, the VPN service is already available with Google’s 2TB Premium cloud storage subscription.

Lastly, Google has announced that its Pixel 6 lineup-exclusive Security Hub will soon be making an appearance on all Android devices. Security Hub takes inputs from Google Play Protect to indicate a red, yellow, or green indicator in the hub to denote the security level of your device.

Read Google’s blog post to learn more about the latest security updates.

Xplornet to install high-speed fibre cable across PEI’s Confederation Bridge

Xplornet Communications is launching a unique network expansion project in Prince Edward Island.

According to the press release, the internet service provider (ISP) plans to install a 15 km fibre cable spanning across the Confederation Bridge, linking PEI to the mainland.

The high-speed fibre would reportedly be the “first telecommunications cable to be placed inside the bridge’s utility corridor in nearly 25 years.”

As a result, Xplornet had to partner with Strait Crossing Development, the company that operates and maintains the Confederation Bridge.

Xplornet says it intends to lay over 600 km of fibre cable across PEI, connecting an estimated 20,000 homes and businesses on the island.

The project is expected to be completed sometime in early 2023.

Earlier this month, Xplornet provided an update on its high-speed internet expansion project in Haldimand, Ontario, announcing that 6,500 new locations in the region now had access to its broadband service

In September, the ISP launched Canada’s first-ever rural 5G standalone network in New Brunswick.

Here’s a sneaky way to set up Pixel 6’s Magic Eraser on your last-gen Pixel

Those holding onto their older Pixels this year instead of upgrading to the fancy new Pixel 6 and 6 Pro might be feeling some FOMO over new camera features. But, it seems like there might be a way to get at least one new feature — Magic Eraser — on previous Pixel phones.

As usual, Google’s newest Pixel phone arrived with several fancy camera tricks, but many of them appear to be software-based. However, Google has indicated some of the new software features rely on capabilities built into the new Tensor chip, which suggests the company won’t port the features back to older models.

Despite that limitation, Android Police has found a way to get the new Magic Eraser feature onto other Pixel phones. In short, it involves installing a Google Photos APK file from a Pixel 6 device — APK files, for those not familiar with them, are the application files for Android apps.

How to get Magic Eraser on an older Pixel

We’ve included the instructions below on how to install the APK file and gain access to Magic Eraser, but before you rush into it, I’d advise that anyone not comfortable with installing APK files from third-party sources (or anyone not comfortable troubleshooting problems if something goes wrong) should not do this. Also, you’ll need to be running Android 12 for this to work.

With that said, let’s get into it:

  1. First, you’ll need the ‘Split APKs Installer’ (SAI) app from the Play Store — this app helps install multiple pieces of an APK file, which will be necessary for getting Magic Eraser working on an older Pixel. You’ll also need to download a zipped file with the necessary files from the Android Police website to your smartphone (other Google Photos APK files might not work).
  2. With everything downloaded, open SAI and tap ‘Install APKs.’
  3. Select ‘System file picker’ and grant permission for SAI to access files on your device.
  4. Select the ‘.zip’ file you downloaded from Android Police.
  5. You should see a list of APK pieces, including the base APK and configuration resources — tap ‘Install’ at the bottom.
  6. Next, you’ll see a pop-up asking you to grant SAI permission to install unknown apps. Tap ‘Settings’ and enable permission.
  7. Finally, you’ll see a pop-up asking if you want to update Photos. Tap ‘Update.’

Magic Eraser should work fine on most Pixel phones

Once that’s done, you can open Google Photos and start messing around with Magic Eraser. You’ll be able to find it by selecting an image > Edt > Tools > Magic Eraser. Android Police reported it works fine on the Pixel 5, 5a, 4 XL and 4a. I gave it a try on my Pixel 3 and it also worked fine, although the app crashed the first time I tried to use it (after that, I had no issues).

One final caveat worth considering is that while Magic Eraser is fairly easy to get now, that could change in the future. Android Police warns that a future Photos update could break or remove the functionality. But for now, if you want you can download it and try it out.
