Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye still using the Google Pixel 3 in new Disney+ series

Superman isn’t the only superhero who loves the Google Pixel.

At the 30-second mark in the latest ‘Event’ trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Hawkeye Disney+ series, there’s a moment when Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton takes a phone call outside of a store. The purpose of this scene is for a fun “I’ll be home for Christmas” line from Clin, but Eagle-eyed viewers may also notice that he’s actually using the Google Pixel 3.

It’s a particularly notable phone for him to have since it’s the same model he used in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The phone can be seen in the pivotal scene where Hulk uses Tony Stark’s makeshift Infinity Gauntlet to bring back half of all life in the universe. Clint receives a call on his Pixel 3 from his previously deceased wife, thus showing that Hulk’s efforts worked.

But what’s especially interesting is that Clint’s phone would undoubtedly have been destroyed immediately after this call, given Thanos’ airstrike on the Avengers compound. Therefore, Clint was clearly enough of a fan of the Pixel 3 to not only get a new one, but still be using it by the time of the Hawkeye series.

It’s unclear exactly how long Hawkeye takes place after Endgame, but presumably, there are at least a few months between both MCU titles, suggesting he’s been using the Pixel 3 for a little while. (I like to imagine that Clint went to replace it immediately after Tony Stark’s funeral in Endgame).

Interestingly, fellow Avenger Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) was seen using a Windows Phone in her eponymous solo film earlier this year. However, that film took place in 2016, which made it more understandable that she might be using one of the now-discontinued devices.

Hawkeye is Marvel’s fourth live-action series for Disney+, following WandaVisionThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki. Set to premiere with two episodes on November 24thHawkeye follows Clint Barton as he teams up with the young archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to fight enemies from his past and get back to his family in time for Christmas.

It’s also worth noting that ahead of the Hawkeye premiere, Disney will hold its inaugural ‘Disney+ Day’ event on November 12th. This presentation will stream on Disney+ and offer news on future streaming titles from a variety of brands, including Marvel.

Apple lost $6 billon this quarter due to chip ongoing shortage and manufacturing delays

In its fiscal fourth-quarter 2021 earnings report, Apple revealed that it earned revenue of $83.4 billion (about $102.96 billion), a year-over-year increase of 29 percent.

However, this number is well below Wall Street expectations of $84.85 billion (roughly $104.7 billion CAD). In an interview with CNBC, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that supply chain constraints had a significant impact on Apple’s earnings this quarter.

“We had a very strong performance despite larger than expected supply constraints, which we estimate to be around $6 billion,” said cook. “The industry-wide chip shortages that have been talked about a lot and COVID-related manufacturing disruptions in Southeast Asia.”

This fall, Apple released the iPhone 13 series, a redesigned iPad Mini, the 9th-gen iPad, the Apple Watch Series 7, 3rd-gen AirPods and the MacBook Pro (2021). Though Apple’s iPhone 13 wasn’t released until the latter half of this financial quarter, it experienced 47 percent growth over last year. Apple’s iPad is also up 21 percent when compared to last year.

Both the iPhone 13 and new MacBook Pro have been difficult to hunt down amid shortages, with shipping dates in some cases several weeks (or months) away. Though it’s still unclear, it’s likely that Apple’s product shortage issues will continue into the holiday season.

PS2 Classic GTA: San Andreas is coming to VR with the Oculus Quest 2

During its Connect 2021 event, Facebook Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming to the Oculus Quest 2.

It’s unclear when the game will release, how much it will cost or even really what the PlayStation 2 classic will look like running in virtual reality (VR). During the event, only a brief snippet of the game in action was shown off. Oculus’ website lists GTA: San Andreas for the Quest 2 as a “project many years in the making.”

Remasters of GTA: San Andreas, Vice City and San Andreas are set to release on November 11th across Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as mobile devices.

As fun as it would be to check out Grove Street in VR, I’m not sure a title like San Andreas could be played from the first-person perspective. That said, GTA V on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 featured a first-person mode, so maybe bringing San Andreas to VR isn’t that far-fetched.

Resident Evil 4 was recently ported to the Oculus Quest. While I haven’t tested out the game myself, it has received pretty positive reviews so far.

During its Connect 2021 event, Facebook also revealed that it’s changing its name to ‘Meta.’

Looks like Google will partner with uBreakiFix for Pixel 6/6 Pro repair

Now that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are officially available and pre-orders are starting to arrive, people have the phones. And that means there’s a risk someone will drop their new phone and break it (especially since the phones have glass on the front and back this time around).

If you are unlucky enough to break your Pixel 6 or 6 Pro, it looks like Google is once again partnering with uBreakiFix (which is in the process of rebranding to Asurion Tech Repair and Solutions) for same-day repairs. Google did this before with Pixel phones in Canada9to5Google reports uBreakiFix will handle same-day repairs for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in the U.S.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Google to confirm the same for Canada and will update this post with any additional information.

One of the benefits of going to a Google repair partner like uBreakiFix is that you know the company will use OEM parts, tools and training for the repair. That should bring a little peace of mind to the repair process.

Even if you don’t have the Pixel 6 or 6 Pro, uBreakiFix’s website says it’s “Google authorized” and lists repair capabilities for Google phones including the entire Pixel lineup along with several Nexus phones (even the Nexus S, interestingly). The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro aren’t currently listed on the website, but that might change given how new the phones are. Also, the site humorously lists the Pixel 5a even though it’s not officially available in Canada.

The fastest Tim Hortons Wi-Fi in Canada is at a Guelph, Ontario location

There 4,286 Tim Hortons locations across Canada to be exact. For context, this number doesn’t even include Tim Hortons locations at gas stations.

This many restaurants across the country make Tim Hortons the largest free Wi-Fi provider in Canada — McDonald’s doesn’t even come close.

PCMag performed 3,051 speed tests via Ookla at 1,469 Tim Hortons restaurants during its recent cross Canada carrier speed test.

According to the test’s findings, Tim Hortons has overall pretty slow Wi-Fi. On average, Tim Hortons locations offered 22.7Mbps download speed and upload speeds of 6.5Mbps.

However, at the fastest 20 locations, which only includes the top 1.4 percent of tests, the average download speed was 143.7Mbps and 36Mbps. Delving deeper, PCMag says that three particular Tim Hortons locations highly skew the average.

These Bell-powered Tim Hortons locations equipped with super fast internet are in Etobicoke, Guelph and Toronto, Ontario. Most of the restaurant chain’s Wi-Fi offerings rely on GoCo, a spin-off of Telus that offers Wi-Fi to businesses in Canada.

Below are the highlights from PCMag’s extensive Tim Hortons internet speed testing:

  • The fastest Tim Hortons in Canada is in a mall outside Guelph.
  • The fastest Tim Hortons in Toronto is just off Bathurst Street in Fort York.
  • The fastest Tim Hortons in greater Montreal is in the Quartier DIX30 shopping mall in Brossard.

The Guelph location’s download speed measured in at 325Mbps, and following that Toronto was Toronto with 308Mbps. PCMag’s report also revealed that Bell offers the fastest Canada’s fastest mobile network.

Apple Support page outlines what’s new in the MacBook Pro (2021)’s aux jack

One feature that flew under the radar during Apple’s MacBook Pro (2020) event was the upgrade to its headphone jack. With that in mind, if you work with high-res audio, it’s definitely worth paying attention to.

The new headphone jack features “DC load detection and adaptive voltage output [meaning] Your Mac can detect the impedance of the connected device and will adapt its output for low and high-impedance headphones, as well as for line-level audio devices,” reads Apple’s support page.

In terms non-audiophiles can understand, this means that the new MacBook Pro is compatible with higher-end wired headphones over AUX without the need for an external DAC to power headphones. This follows the recurring theme of the new MacBook Pro requiring far fewer dongles.

For example, if you connect a pair of headphones with an impedance of fewer than 150 ohms, the headphone jack provides up to 1.25-volts of power. The port is compatible with any number above this and goes all the way up to 1k ohms gets 3-volts. Apple has also included a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that can convert signals up to 96 kHz in digital audio to analog.

You can learn more about the new MacBook Pro’s audio jack on Apple’s support page. There’s a separate page for the audio DAC and a third page for setting up your sample rate if you have a specific pair of headphones you want to mix music with.

If like me, you want to test out your headphones with high-quality audio, I was able to find this Apple Music playlist. All of the more modern songs are at the bottom — and by modern, I mean Coldplay. You’ll also need to max out your audio quality in the preferences section of the Apple Music app.

Hydro One Telecom rebrands to Acronym Solutions

Ontario’s electric utility is renaming its information and communications technology (ICT) company from Hydro One Telecom to Acronym Solutions.

According to the press release, the name change is a “strategic move to signal its focus on providing more value added solutions for business customers.”

This suggests that Hydro One likely decided to rebrand its ICT offshoot to court more private sector business, as “Hydro One” is a name primarily associated with providing a public service (i.e. electricity).

The press release itself describes Acronym Solutions as “support[ing] Ontario-based businesses, large enterprise, service providers, healthcare providers, public sector organizations and agencies, utilities and school boards.”

This client basis is further narrowed down on the company’s revamped website, which describes Acronym Solutions as offering “business solutions,” specifically.

Both the website and press release also feature the new logo for the rebranded ICT company.

This big announcement is perhaps only somewhat overshadowed by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealing today that the social media giant is, in fact, changing its name to “Meta.”

Microsoft says its increasing availability of Windows 11 to more devices

Microsoft will start pushing the Windows 11 update out to more devices.

The newest version of Windows became available to a limited number of mostly new devices on October 4th. At least, that was the case for those wanting to take the easy route and simply click an ‘Install’ button — there were (and still are) several ways to manually update your PC if you want to get Windows 11 as soon as possible.

Microsoft chose to roll out Windows 11 slowly to devices to make sure that those updating had a good experience. Now, the company says it has “increased” the availability of Windows 11. Further, it’s “leveraging our latest generation machine learning model to offer the upgrade to an expanded set of eligible devices.”

All that means is if you want to update to Windows 11 but haven’t yet, you might be able to get the update now by heading to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and checking for an update.

If the update doesn’t become available for you in the coming days and you’re sick of waiting, you can also take matters into your own hands and start the process manually if your computer hardware is compatible with the update. You can read more about that here.
