Timothée Chalamet is just like you

Who would have guessed after waking up today that we’d learn that globe-trotting superstar actor Timothée Chalamet is a nerd?

Some might say that he “was” a nerd but here at MobileSyrup we know that once you’re a nerd, you’re always a nerd. Just look at Henry Cavill, notable Superman Supernerd, who even uses a Google Pixel and built a PC in an online video.

Now, you might be asking, “I’ve seen Chalamet. He doesn’t look like a nerd to me,” and you’d be right, but you’ve likely only seen the new, famous Chalamet. Internet sleuths and investigative journalists have discovered that during his early days, a young Timothée had a short-lived YouTube channel where he showed off his custom Xbox 360 controllers.

As you can see in this video, he’s also wearing an argyle sweater which, as we all know, screams ‘nerd,’ so I’ll rest my case. If you want to see the other two videos, he uploaded you can check them out here.

Chalamet can currently be seen in theatres in two movies — Dune, from Canada’s own Denis Villeneuve, and Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch.

Apple Music launches on PlayStation 5 globally

Apple Music is coming to PlayStation 5 later today.

Earlier this month, some PS5 owners had noticed that the music streaming service was popping up for them, but now, Apple and PlayStation have made it official.

With an Apple Music subscription, PS5 users can access more than 90 million songs, as well as tens of thousands of curated playlists, 4K music videos and more.

Functionally, Apple Music on PS5 works just like Spotify. You can either start the Apple Music app before hopping into a game or, if you’re currently playing one, can do so by selecting the ‘Music Function’ card from the Control Center. This will let you listen to music in the background.

However, you can also find and watch music videos from the Apple Music app. Playback will begin in full screen, although it will be reduced to audio-only if you return to your game or go elsewhere on the PS5’s home screen. Returning to the music video will re-open it to continue fullscreen viewing without interruption.

The Apple Music app can be downloaded from the Media space on your PS5. From there, follow the on-screen instructions to link your Apple Music account. PlayStation says more info on this process can be found here.

An Apple Music subscription starts at $9.99 CAD/month. A membership is also included in the Apple One service bundles, which start at $15.95/month.

It’s worth noting that Apple and PlayStation have also partnered on a promotion that gives PS5 owners six months of Apple TV+ for free. Read more on that here.

Intel announces 12th Gen Core desktop CPUs at Innovation event

During its ‘Innovation’ event on October 27th, Intel officially unveiled its 12th Gen Core desktop processors, including what the company claims is the “world’s best gaming processor,” the i9-12900K.

The 12th Gen family of processors will include more than 60 processors and over 500 designs but is starting with six new desktop processors. The 12900K leads the pack boasting 5.2GHz turbo boost speed with 16 cores and 24 threads. Intel says the CPU offers “amazing gen-over-gen performance,” which includes over 20 percent more frames per second (FPS) in popular titles like Troy: A Total War Saga, Hitman 3 and Far Cry 6.

The 12th Gen platform as a whole offers some key advancements as well, such as support for DDR5 memory, support for PCIe 5.0 (up to 16 lanes), offering 2x I/O throughput over PCIe 4.0, up to 30MB of Intel Smart Cache (L3), integrated high-speed wireless with Wi-Fi 6E support and discrete Thunderbolt 4 universal cable connectivity.

Additionally, Intel says the new processors feature a performance hybrid architecture and are the first built on “Intel 7 process.” As a reminder, Intel explained in a product road map released in the summer that ‘Intel 7’ was the new name for the 10nm process the company would use in its 12th Gen chips. Intel also claimed its 10nm process was comparable to the 7nm process offered by other companies like TSMC.

Intel’s performance hybrid architecture uses a mix of what the company calls ‘P-cores’ and ‘E-cores,’ which represent performance and efficiency respectively. By mixing P- and E-cores, Intel’s new CPUs should be able to offer excellent performance when needed, while also offering reduced power consumption when high-performance isn’t needed.

Aside from the gaming benefits, Intel also claims the new architecture enables significant improvements for content creation. That includes 36 percent faster photo editing, 32 percent faster video editing, 37 percent faster 3D modelling and 100 percent faster multi-frame rendering.

Of course, it remains to be seen how Intel’s 12th Gen chips stack up to AMD’s excellent Ryzen chips and Apple’s surprisingly powerful M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Intel has been losing ground to the former on the PC side and has lost the latter on the Mac side, something CEO Pat Gelsinger wants to change. But to win Apple back, Intel’s going to need to do a lot better — it’s not clear yet if these new CPUs will be enough.

Intel says its unlocked 12th Gen desktop processors are now available for pre-order with broad availability to start on November 4th. You can learn more on Intel’s website.

Niantic’s Pikmin Bloom begins rolling out on Android and iOS

Nintendo has begun the global rollout of its next mobile game, Pikmin Bloom.

Developed by Pokémon Go maker Niantic, Pikmin Bloom is a similar location-based augmented reality smartphone experience. Unlike Pokémon Go, though, you don’t actually battle against any creatures. Instead, Pikmin Go is intended to be a more laidback experience that encourages walking around to grow your collection of titular critters in a combat-free way.

As you go around, you’ll find seedlings that can grow into the plant-like Pikmin. You’ll find more Pikmin as walk, and they’ll all follow you accordingly. You can also collect items like clothes for the Pikmin to wear and fruit to feed them. Meanwhile, you get to control a Mii avatar.

You can see more from the game in this official trailer, which features commentary from legendary Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto and Niantic CEO John Hanke.

If you don’t yet see the game on Android or iOS, keep in mind that Pikmin Bloom‘s global launch began with Singapore and Australia. Nintendo says it’s rolling out to more regions “shortly.”

Alleged information about Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series surfaces online

Some of Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra specs have seemingly leaked online, showing off a bit more details about the upcoming smartphone.

The phone will reportedly sport an improved 1/1.33-inch 0.8µm 108MP ISOCELL HM3 sensor over what’s found on the Galaxy S2 Ultra. As well, it’s said to feature an f/1.8 aperture, 85-degree field of view and a 12-megapixel 1/2.55-inch ultra-wide sensor from Sony with a 1.4µm pixel pitch and an f/2.2 aperture.

This phone will also include a periscope zoom camera with two new 1/3.52-inch Sony sensors, which are smaller than the S21 Ultra’s 1/3.24-inch sensors. Additionally, the handset will sport a 10x optical zoom camera with a 10-megapixel shooter with an f/4.9 aperture and an 11-degree field of view, and another telephoto shooter with 3x zoom, a 1/3.52-inch sensor with an f/2.4 aperture and a 36-degree field of view.

This information was shared by the well-known leaker, Ice Universe.

Ice Universe also posted about the S22 and S22+’ design elements. According to the leak, the phones will offer a design similar to the iPhone 13 without a notch. The handset’s front and rear are flat and symmetrical.

We haven’t seen many renders of the Galaxy S22 or S22+ surface online, but we have seen renders of the S22 Ultra. The phones are likely to launch in either January or February next year.

Wow, this leaked internal Facebook video is so incredibly cringe

Facebook has done some truly terrible things, but this leaked internal benefits video might be the peak.

Look, every company has internal videos for employees to communicate some important information, whether it’s about benefits, workplace rules, whatever. Most of them are very cringey. But as with so many things, Facebook is determined to be much worse than everyone else.

And so we have this:

It’s worth noting that the above video is a reposted copy since the original video was made private (hopefully because Facebook realized how shameful it was to be publicly associated with this.

Buzzfeed News reporter Katie Notopoulous first posted the video on Twitter, calling it more “damning than anything in the Haugen leak.”

The only tolerable part of the video is when they jump into the “metaverse” and several dead-eyed virtual reality characters stare into your soul while reading off information about benefits. Well, tolerable is a stretch. But hey, at least we got a tease of our digital future!

The Metaverse.

I feel sorry for all involved with this video — both those who made it and those who chose to watch it. I’d like to end on a positive note, but I don’t think there is one, unless this one video manages to singlehandedly destroy a massive company with a terrifying amount of power. The cringe is that powerful, but I don’t think it — or anything — can contend with Zuckerberg’s unflinching desire to ruin everything with pokes and likes.

Koodo reportedly offering $55/20GB plan with phone purchase to some customers

Telus flanker brand Koodo reportedly has a fairly excellent offer available for new and existing customers looking to get a new phone.

According to a RedFlagDeals post from ‘martiandagroot,’ some Koodo locations have a $55/month 20GB plan on offer for customers who get a new phone. The deal is available for both new and existing customers, but new customers can get an extra $10/mo discount for two years, bringing the plan to $45/20GB.

Martiandagroot mentions that the plan was available at the Eglinton Square shopping centre Koodo location, as well as at the Cedarbrae Mall. However, another RFD user, ‘BuildBuyBreed,’ chimed in to say they had the $55/20GB offer listed in their online account. Unfortunately, the plan was only available with a phone upgrade, and BuildBuyBreed says they couldn’t check out and now the promo is no longer listed.

A few other RFD users shared posts saying they also saw the offer online, but for some it was limited to Quebec. Other posts claim the $55/20GB deal is only available for Ontario numbers.

All this is to say that there’s some confusion among RFD posters about the specifics of the deal. That said, if you happen to live near a Koodo location and can get this offer, that’s great. But, keep in mind that your mileage may vary.
