Rogers reports record Q3 postpaid wireless net additions as profits dip

Profits are down, but postpaid wireless subscribers are way up, according to Rogers’ third quarter financial results for 2021.

The Toronto-based telecom giant gained 175,000 net new postpaid wireless subscribers in Q3 2021 — its best result in 13 years, according to the report.

For context, postpaid monthly subscribers refers to contracts where customers are billed for mobile services at the end of each month — think bundles and packages — as opposed to prepaid or pay-as-you-go subscriptions where the customer pays upfront.

By comparison, the number of postpaid wireless net additions reported by Rogers earlier this year, in Q2, was 99,000 — which itself was a significant improvement from the 1,000 postpaid wireless net losses the carrier reported in Q2 2020

In terms of terms of income and revenue, however, Rogers’ Q3 report was less celebratory.

The carrier reported a net income of $490 million in Q3 2021, down four percent from last year’s $512 million in Q3 2020.

Meanwhile, total revenue stayed nearly unchanged — by billionaire standards, mind you — with Rogers reporting $3,666,000,000 in Q3 2021, compared to $3,665,000,000 in Q3 2020.

Q3 covers the three-month fiscal period of July, August, and September, which ended on September 30th.

If you weren’t already keeping up on this month’s unexpected season of Succession: Canadian Telecom Edition, the Rogers family seems to be in the middle of a corporate power struggle.

According to insider reports, company chairperson Edward Rogers tried — unsuccessfully — to oust CEO Joe Natale and replace him with chief financial officer Tony Staffieri, with Staffieri losing their job as a result.

The attempted coup reportedly failed because Melinda Hixon-Rogers, deputy chair of the company and Edward’s sister, opposed her brother’s plan, as did most of the board — which includes several other Rogers family members, including another sister, Martha Rogers, and their mother, Loretta Rogers.

The company is also trying to seal the deal on a lucrative —and contentious — purposed merger with Shaw Communications, which still needs federal approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the Competition Bureau, and the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.

You can use MagSafe on a Pixel 6 with the right case

Accessory maker Moment has launched a new slate of cases for the Pixel 6 series of phones that allows them to work with Apple MagSafe accessories.

The company is labelling the cases with (M)Force branding, and not only do they allow for basic accessories like the MagSafe Wallet to be attached to the back of the phone, but they even work with the MagSafe Wireless charger. You can see this below, as demonstrated by David Imel from the MKBHD Studio on Twitter.

So far, the company is only selling one magnetic accessory compatible case for each of the new Pixel phones in black. However, Moment does sell its iPhone 13 cases in more colours, so perhaps the company may add some colours to these if they’re popular enough. I also used a Moment case on my iPhone 12 and liked how the rubbery plastic felt to touch.

Overall, it’s a really smart move for case makers and even other phone manufacturers to usurp the MagSafe accessories. When Apple announced them, it seemed like another way to lock people into the iPhone ecosystem. Now that the Pixel can use the same accessories with a case, it breaks down that barrier and, potentially, means that all phones could use MagSafe with the right case.

This is excellent news for me since I’m obsessed with my PopWallet+ with MagSafe. The Moment cases cost $49.99 USD (roughly $61 CAD).

Things are not looking great for the future of YouTube on Roku

The back and forth between Roku and YouTube is getting close to the deadline that could result in YouTube pulling its app from the smart TV OS.

The two companies have been arguing over their arrangement since April 2021, but Axios reports that if this goes on until December 9th, the YouTube app will disappear from the Roku Channel Store. However, Google mentioned that it would allow Roku to continue to provide the app to people who already have it downloaded.

Roku is claiming that Google is asking for a higher ranking in Roku’s search results, and the company wants Roku to implement new search, voice and data features that are apparently not requested from other smart tv operating systems.

Google says that it’s simply looking to renew its existing deal with Roku.

Taking a step back, it’s hard to see what is actually happening here. But since Google will make or lose millions depending on this deal, a conclusion could definitely be reached in December. Sure, Roku stands to lose access to YouTube, but it’s unclear how much that matters for a lot of Roku customers.

However, it’s still better for everyone if the companies reach a deal. It’s also surprising that Google appears to be picking on Roku so much since the purple company is one of the more dominant players in the streaming video market. Google stands to lose a lot by not having its services on Roku.

Google will restrict free tier of YouTube Music to songs only in Canada

YouTube Music in Canada will soon get a lot better for free users with changes coming in November. However, not everything is changing for the better — according to a Google support page, free YouTube Music users will no longer be able to watch music videos in YouTube Music.

The information comes from an ‘Ask Me Anything’ (AMA) posted by the YouTube Team in the YouTube Music help forum (spotted by Android Police). The post outlines some changes coming to YouTube Music starting November 3rd. The changes come alongside the previously announced change that will finally let free users listen to music in the background or with the screen off.

The listed changes are as follows:

Those who listen to music free with ads will now be able to

  • listen to music in the background
  • shuffle play personalized mixes (that are made just for you!)
  • find the perfect mood mixes for activities like workout, commute and more
  • explore millions of songs & thousands of playlists, free of cost

Those who pay for a YouTube Premium subscription will be able to enjoy additional exclusive benefits, like the ability to

  • listen to songs on-demand
  • watch videos on YouTube Music [emphasis ours]
  • skip tracks an unlimited number of times
  • enjoy YouTube Music without ads

As Android Police points out, YouTube Music users can currently watch music videos in the ‘Home’ and ‘Explore’ feeds of YouTube Music, whether or not they subscribe to the service. The ability to seamlessly switch between audio and video playback is a feature reserved for Premium subscribers. However, it seems this is set to change for Canadian users on November 3rd ahead of a wider rollout (although the timeline isn’t clear yet).

Back when I was a regular YouTube Music user, I rarely used the video features. However, some people really like being able to access a full catalogue of music alongside music videos, remixes and other content from YouTube. It’s also a major selling point for YouTube Music. Overall, it seems like removing the feature for free users could be a significant blow to the service. That said, if I had to pick between watching videos or background audio playback, I know which I’d choose.

Here are the gaming attractions at this year’s Fan Expo Canada

Fan Expo Canada is officially set to return this weekend, October 22nd to 24th, under a smaller, COVID-friendly ‘Limited Edition’ format.

In the pre-COVID times, MobileSyrup used to round up all of the gaming attractions that you could find at the country’s largest pop-culture event. It’s taking place once again in Ontario’s Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Normally, the show has a slew of game demos from publishers like Nintendo and Xbox and gaming-related guests like voice actors. However, it should be noted this year’s COVID-friendly show has significantly less gaming programming than usual.

To start, neither PlayStation, Nintendo nor Xbox — the ‘Big Three’ of the gaming publishers — are set to attend. The same goes for any other major gaming company. With Canada not having events like PAX, E3 or Gamescom, Fan Expo is usually the only way for the public to demo upcoming releases, but it appears that companies ultimately opted to skip the show’s first-ever COVID outing.

Fan Expo has reached out to MobileSyrup‘s inquiry about the gaming programming this year and will update this story once a response has been received.

What does that leave, then?

Last month, Fan Expo confirmed that Charles Martinet (the voice of Mario), Steve Downes (the voice of Master Chief) and Nolan North (the voice of Nathan Drake) were set to headline the gaming guests. The actors represented Nintendo, Xbox and PlayStation, respectively, making it a particularly neat lineup. Unfortunately, North cancelled recently, although Martinet and Downes are still set to appear on all three days.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador’s own Jennifer Hale, the voice of female Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect trilogy, also cancelled her appearance.

That said, there are still some actors who have had many prominent roles in video games, including Steve Blum (Grunt in Mass Effect, Wolverine in various Marvel games), Toronto’s own Tara Strong (Harley Quinn in various DC games, Rikku in Final Fantasy X), Josh Keaton (Spider-Man in various Marvel games, Spyro the Dragon in various Spyro games) and Christopher Sabat (Vegeta in the Dragon Ball Z games, Garland in the Final Fantasy series).

Tickets for Fan Expo start at $45 — you can learn more here.

Additionally, check out this page for a full breakdown of the show’s COVID-19 health and safety procedures. In general, though, know that proof of vaccination is required for entry, while masks must be worn at all times (outside of eating at the food court). If you’re planning to attend a panel, you should also keep in mind that seating — rather bizarrely — won’t be available. Fan Expo says this is to accommodate more people.

Finally, there’s an official free Fan Expo mobile app on Android and iOS that lets you keep up with show maps, schedules, announcements and more.

TTC is updating its website to offer a ‘mobile-first, responsive design’

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has announced that its outdated website is scheduled for an upgrade this week.

The website, which currently resembles eBay’s early 2010 look, will offer “a seamless, responsive and much more accessible user experience” post-upgrade, allowing users to better navigate the site.

The current version of the website, which is not mobile-friendly, was promised to be updated back in 2018. However, the company in charge of creating the new website shut down, causing an almost three-year delay.

That said, the new website will go live this week with changes “based on feedback from users of the current website.”

According to TTC, the new website will include:

  • A mobile-first, responsive design
  • Simplified content and user experience
  • Status dashboards for subway lines, surface routes, elevators and escalators
  • Live service alerts widget

Additionally, the TTC intends to launch another new feature later this fall — bus time integration. “This will allow customers to see in real-time exactly where the buses are in relation to the stop,” reads TTC’s website.

Microsoft is beta testing Android apps on Windows 11

A new preview build of Windows 11 currently making its way to beta testers finally allows users to try out Android apps in Windows 11.

If you’re running the latest Windows 11 beta software, you can download apps from the new Microsoft Store app. However, these apps are actually sourced from Amazon’s App Store. Android apps reportedly function well in Windows 11 and integrate with ‘Alt+Tab’ and ‘Task View.’

The report also mentions that Windows has added 50 apps to the beta for people to try out. Amazon’s App Store features 600,000 apps in total. It’s unclear if Microsoft plans to bring all of the store’s apps to Windows 11 once the feature officially launches.

Being able to run Android apps is one of the highlights of Windows 11 that Microsoft has yet to deliver on. Hopefully, the feature rolls out soon.

Rogers and Fido add repair centers to 15 stores across Canada

Rogers is now offering its certified repair program in 15 more cities across Canada.

This means that if you’re a Rogers or a Fido customer that lives in one of these locations, you can bring your phone into the store to get fixed and it will be repaired in-store instead of shipping it out to a repair centre.

The carrier says that phones can even be fixed in as little as a day in some cases. This is similar to how repairs from services like Mobile Klinik or UBreakIFixit operate.

The repair service is available in the following cities from October 18th onwards:

  • Ajax
  • Brampton
  • Markham
  • Mississauga
  • Oakville
  • Oshawa
  • Toronto
  • Vaughan
  • Whitby
  • Hamilton
  • Kitchener
  • London
  • Cambridge
  • Welland
  • Niagara Falls
  • The service will roll out to Barrie, St. Catharines Rogers and Fido and Waterloo stores on October 27th and Ottawa on November 3rd.

Rogers says it can fix battery issues, broken screens, cameras, speakers, software hiccups and more. All the repairs are also guaranteed with a 90-day warranty.

If you are a Rogers customer with a broken phone, you can book a repair here. If you’re with Fido, you’ll need to use this link instead.
